There perhaps are two ways to think about the Internet — before and after Facebook. By now you know the story. (Hell, they made a movie about it.) Some Harvard students create a site to rank girls. It expands into a larger network of collegians, and Facebook in its early form required a college .edu email address to join. In 2006, it opened up to anyone age 13 and older.

Fast forward a few years and many billions of dollars, and Facebook is now a publicly traded company. Co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is one of the youngest billionaires in the world, along with co-founder Dustin Moskovitz (who's younger by all of eight days). Facebook is how we keep in touch. How we stalk our former high school classmates. How potential employers check out potential hires. How news organizations and public entities get the word out. How we play games. How we share photos and video. How we forget how to have real relationships with actual people. It's how we log into other websites, using our Facebook credentials.

Like it or not, Facebook, in the span of a decade, became one of the most important online properties we've ever known.

Will it continue to be so in another 10 years? We'll have to see. But for now, there's no escaping it.

It's time for app developers to fall out of love with Facebook Login

Back in 2009, Facebook unveiled Facebook Connect, a new feature for website and app developers to implement for users signing into apps. By simply tapping the "Connect with Facebook...

Starting today, you can now send and receive 360...

Three people are suing Facebook for collecting call/text logs on Android

Like it or not, what Facebook did here was perfectly legal. Shortly after the Facebook + Cambridge Analytica scandal broke, it was discovered that Facebook was also collecting call and text logs on people's Android phones and storing all of them. The social network did this legally using Android's...

Facebook is pushing back its smart speaker following privacy concerns

This is probably for the best. Between May 1 and 2 this year, Facebook will host its annual F8 Developer Conference in San Jose, California. This year's event was supposed to be where Facebook would introduce the world to its first smart speaker, but these plans have apparently been scrapped....

Speaking for the FTC,...

There is 'good' data collection and then there's Facebook, and you need to know the difference

Claiming "you are the product" is the lazy way to talk about companies that collect data. I'll let you in on a secret: I hate sharing any of my personal information with any company or person I don't actually know. OK, for the people who know me that's not really a secret, but I still need to...

Facebook never earned your trust and now we're all paying the price

There was no Facebook data breach. You gave them the data, and they gave it away — all according to plan. News reports have been swirling about Facebook (a company you know), Cambridge Analytica (a company you might not have heard of), and the 2016 United States presidential election. It's an...

3 Vero features that Facebook and Instagram should steal

While Vero may or may not have lasting power, the app has some worthwhile features that Facebook should poach. It's been about a month since Vero - True Social burst into public consciousness as the hip new social media platform and… so far, it hasn't really lived up to the hype. If you're one...

Facebook Lite is now available in the United States

Also coming to the UK, Canada, and more. No matter how active of a user you are, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the Facebook app has become incredibly bloated over the last couple years. If you aren't a fan of the million extra features it has and simply want to focus on the basics, you...

How to opt out of Facebook data sharing

Here's how to keep your data safe from being brokered and sold. Facebook knows a lot about you. I mean, a lot. If you've ever been creeped out by a scarily on-point ad while visiting Facebook, that's why. But some of you might wonder where Facebook gets its data. The answer is simple: data...

Facebook will 'massively' simplify Messenger in 2018

Messenger is a mess, and Facebook has finally acknowledged this. Like a lot of people, I use Facebook Messenger on an almost daily basis to communicate with friends and family members.
