Looking to expand their app further, the folks from Splashtop have now introduced Splashtop 2 HD to the masses. With over 7 million users accessing their desktops remotely, Splashtop 2 HD brings along a newly refined UI and promises to be faster and more secure than ever before.

Splashtop 2 HD for Android tablets features:

  • Pinch and zoom (which is a new feature first introduced into HD version)
  • Optimized performance leveraging hardware specific platform acceleration
  • New, easy user interface
  • Wake-on-LAN (WoL)
  • 3G/4G and Internet support with the Anywhere Access Pack

For a limited time, Splashtop 2 HD is available as a free download. I'm forced to use the term free lightly because it's not really a full-featured version. The access the basic version allows for is up-to two systems over your local Wi-Fi. In order to make use the truly remote desktop options you'll need to add the Anywhere Access Pack that is available for $0.99 USD per month or $9.99 USD per year.

If you're running Windows 7, Vista, and XP or Mac OS X 10.6+ and in need of a remote desktop solution, it's worth looking into as a viable solution. Need some more info? Full press release can be found below.

Splashtop 2 HD now available - Free for a limited time and updated to be faster, more secure

So what about all of the people that paid for the original version of spashtop? Are we dead in the water with updates and forgotten? or will we be compensated for this new version

On the reviews Splshtop is replying to customers that purchased the HD or THD versions sayin they will credit them 1 year of Anywhere access.

While better than nothing and I sent them an email, ipad users got a lifetime anywhere access pack, I think android users should ask for the same deal.

Looks like if you bought the original HD they will give you 1 year free. The big issue is that iOS users get it free for life.

Oh don't worry I created a ticket on their website with a screenshot of the email they sent me a couple months ago stating it would be free for all. If it doesn't happen I will create a massive stink.

If you have had an iPad in the past, and owned the iPad app, but no longer have one, you can still get AAP free for life. I put in a ticket a while ago, saying I no longer had my iPad, here's the email address I used Splashtop for iPad with, here's my Splashtop account, and they credited me. AAP for life. If you fall into that same boat, it's worth a shot.

monthly fee WTF? I've been using RealVNC for years for computer-->computer control and also phone-->computer

I don't get the appeal here...

Better streaming, lower lag, etc. While RealVNC, RDP, etc are fine for remote access/administration, Splashtop is better for multimedia/game access, if you're into that sort of thing. The $10 a year subscription is ridiculous however... what a joke.

WTH??! I paid full price for it and now they're changing it so that I have to pay monthly fee? Doesn't matter I got a free 1 year, when I bought this app, I expect it's free access for LIFE.

I have seen many Android app moving in this direction: pay full price... then change to pay monthly fee.

To be honest, this is what DROVE people to pirate the software!!

I will be leaving BAD reviews in Google Play store to warn users. What next? They're going to raise the monthly fee by 50% in the next 6 months?!

I'm not very impressed with the free app then wait... subscription charge plan myself. However I always have my rooted Galaxy nexus near me so I'm just using Wifi tethering anyway.

Wow. So .. iPad users who paid earlier get this free for LIFE. Android users who paid for this earlier GET 1 YEAR only free, AND ONLY IF THEY plead with an e-mail?

What a crock. So is the Android base now funding iOS at this point for Splashtop. This is quite a low move. If they want to start charging, it should be equal for all platforms.

What is the difference between splashtop hd 2 and the one that is embedded on the prime which is splashtop

It's really shaddy for them to still selling the Splashtop HD for 9 bucks even though they are not going to support it anymore. Correct me if I am wrong. It's kind of forcing the new buyers to pay in the subscription package.

Hey Androidcentral you may wanna read the comments about this deceptive company before putting them on your front page and giving them free advertisment for their apple/ios biased app. They blame it on a mistake but seems more of some may have greased some palms. Ive been burned with 3 versions of this app.

Different usage models. While TeamViewer is great for basic remote access, Splashtop is better at low-latency, multimedia applications. They're not directly comparable, although for most people, Teamviewer is likely all they need.
