OUYA -- the $99 Android gaming console that started all kinds of fires on Kickstarter, eventually earning some $8.5 million in pledges -- today announced that consoles will begin shipping to backers on March 28. Production is well under way, the company said, with a full launch scheduled for June, when the console also will be available in stores.

OUYA has already shipped more than 1,200 developer consoles. (That's what you see here -- production units will look a little different.)

The company has also said that it plans to release a new version of the console each year.

Writes OUYA:

OUYAs will begin shipping to Kickstarter backers on March 28. That’s right. Parts are in the factory and assembly lines are buzzing. We’ll gradually ramp up production as we make sure things are working. (Our full launch is still set for June, which is when OUYA will be available in stores!)

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of you will receive your OUYA, and you’ll get to start playing right away. You will also get to watch OUYA evolve over the coming weeks and months. We’ll continue to add new features, refine our user experience, and bring on more games. As always, we appreciate your feedback (and apply it), so keep it coming.

Were your fingers steeped and a fat white cat in your lap when you said that? If not, please go back and do that.

Do you guys know if the ouya will have a browser in it to surf the web and play videos from the web with flash?

I'm definitely getting one when they launch. To be honest, I think they might sell out before I'm able to grab one. At $99, I can see quite a few people choosing this over the PS4 or new XBox.

I cant see it replacing a PS4 or an Xbox, but with its price point and bluetooth controller I will definitely be picking one up. Ever since I downloaded shadowgun deadzone I have been considering getting a controller for my Nexus 7. Now I have the opportunity to get one along with an incredibly mobile indie games platform running Jellybean? Sounds fantastic!

The games ive seen so far look terrible nothing i want to play ill wait for Tegra 4 version or get a shield instead

I thought it looked better than that. The frosty looking plastic doesn't look as nice as the metallic finish I remember seeing.

As the article states, the shown version is a developer edition which does not look the same as ouyas backers will receive.

Take a second look at that paragraph, the photos they have are of the developers special, say if you had paid $700 to get early access to the platform and code. They made this group see through to highlight its components, sort of for fun.

The store models and early purchases will come in the brushed silver, although if you bought one of kickstarter in the last week you could get the limited edition bronzed OUYA that had sort of a steampunk vibe to it. That one was my favorite design personally.

Every console has to have that killer game that drives the initial sales. NES had Super Mario Bros., Genesis had Sonic, 360 had Halo and OUYA has ... OUYA has ... it's got ... potential games?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I will not believe in it until I see that it gets in the hands of customers! If they can get this off without a hitch, I'll be impressed. But until that point, I'll be skeptical.

I am super excited to get mine. I just hope it doesn't take forever to get them all out the door. I am super excited about the games that they have been announcing lately as well. Especially that some of the big names in the gaming world are going to be releasing exclusive titles for Ouya as well. - Ouya news, reviews, rumors and more: Ouya Report www.ouyareport.com
