Hangouts desktop app update brings new phone tab

The Hangouts app for Chrome OS and Windows recently grabbed an update, and while the change log doesn't list anything particularly groundbreaking, the app has seen the addition of a new phone tab and desktop notifications.

According to a Google Plus post by Google Product Manager Mayur Kamat, the new phone tab will work just like it does in Gmail and the Hangouts mobile apps:

Reload your Hangouts Chrome App - you can now see the phone tab (like in Gmail and mobile apps) so you quickly call your phone contacts, add credit, view calling rates and more. If you have a Google Voice number, you can also send SMS to your contacts directly from the phone tab.

You can view the other updates in the change log below:

  • Receive Chrome notifications when Hangouts app is not always on top.
  • Fix for non-standard zoom levels
  • Minimize option. You can click now close the Hangout floating head and minimize the app so that it does not stay on top.

Go ahead and reload those apps, folks, and let us know in the comments below if you're seeing the new phone tab. If you'd like to give the app a go for the first time, you can download it from the Chrome web store here.
