White Galaxy S II coming August 15, says UK retailer

6

While most of the US is going nuts waiting for the launch of their Samsung Galaxy S II, it looks like Sammy could also have a little treat in store for Europeans next month. UK-based online retailer Clove Technology reports that it'll begin selling a white version of Samsung's flagship smartphone from August 15. There are no photos available just yet, but the internals match the impressive specs of the black original, and the price tag isn't too far off either -- the white Galaxy S II will sell for £410, compared to £399 for the black version.

The Galaxy S II has already seen success internationally, with 5 million units sold in just 85 days. Head on over to our full review of the device to find out why it's one of the most exciting Android phones of the year.

Xperia X10 Gingerbread update actually 'days' away

2

Whoops. Looks like someone over on the Sony Ericsson support site pulled the trigger a little early on the news that the Xperia X10's Gingerbread update was live. Sony Ericsson has issued a clarification today, saying that the announcement was "premature" and that while everything was going "according to plan", it'll still be a few more days before the update to Android 2.3.3 goes out through the PC Companion app.

So hold tight, X10 owners, your Gingerbread update isn't far away!

Sharp FX Plus for AT&T coming to a Walmart near you

9

Walmart has always been great at letting things get out early, and this -- the Sharp PX Plus was feeling left out of all the Android love. This Android 2.2 powered device recently popped up in a Walmart brochure sharing only a small amount of specs being that it has a 3.2-inch display, and Audience's earSmart noise cancellation technology built in. That's about it for now as pricing or launch details are not available at this point.

Five million Galaxy S II sold in 85 days, not even in the US yet

37

It should come as no surprise that the Samsung Galaxy S II (check out our review) is quite a popular device overseas, but just how popular it is may surprise you. Samsung has announced that this is the fastest selling Galaxy device to date, selling over 5 million devices in just 85 days, compared to the 125 days it took for the Galaxy S to reach that number. This is quite an accomplishment considering that the Galaxy S II has yet to even arrive in the US on any carriers, at least until August. Samsung anticipates that they will also beat the 10 million mark, which previously took 7 months to reach. Will you be helping Samsung blow out the previous records by picking on up when it is available?

Vodafone UK dumps HTC EVO 3D, citing 'delays'

6

So ends Vodafone UK's brief flirtation with the HTC EVO 3D. Almost a month to the day after the network first announced its intention to carry HTC's first 3D phone, it's today confirmed that it won't be selling the device after all. According to Vodafone, this is due to delays in bringing the phone to market. The EVO 3D was originally due to launch in the UK this month, but recently a more conservative mid-September launch window has been reported by retailers stocking the SIM-free version of the phone.

Here's Voda's statement in full --

There’s been speculation recently regarding availability of HTC EVO 3D.

We can confirm that due to delays in the launch of the HTC EVO 3D, we no longer intend to include the device in our smartphone range. We’ll be contacting any customers who registered their interest shortly.

We realise this might come as a disappointment, but we’ve got some really exciting handsets in the pipeline. Keep an eye on our coming soon section for all the latest information about the products coming to Vodafone.

We can't help but wonder if one of these might be LG's rival Optimus 3D, which is already available in the UK and mainland Europe.

While this is bad news, you'll still be able to pick up a SIM-free EVO 3D this September, and it's likely that other British carriers will step in and pick up the device now that Vodafone is out of the picture.

Samsung Within gets approved at the FCC, all 4 gees good to go

51

Android Central reader skwon09 was trolling through the FCC site, as Android geeks are wont to do, and stumbled across what's surely the Samsung Within freshly certified with Sprint's radios, including Wimax 4G.  With a model number of SPH-D710, and a backplate that lines up pretty perfectly with the leaked Samsung Within images we saw leaked earlier in the month, there's little doubt that this is the Galaxy S 2 version everyone on Sprint has been waiting for.

Could this be the Galaxy S 2 that should hit the states this August, or will one of the AT&T versions we've seen take that prize?  Only the shadow, err, the carriers know.

Samsung Galaxy S 2 may be coming to AT&T in a non qwerty version as well

53

For those of you feeling a bit disappointed after seeing the keyboard on this morning's Galaxy S 2 device for AT&T, cheer up -- it looks like a more svelte version sans sliding keyboard is coming as well.  We had to hide a few details, but this prototype currently in testing is AT&T and Samsung Galaxy S 2 branded, running Android 2.3.4, has a WVGA display, and is "really sexy" according to our tipster.  Sounds like the Galaxy S 2 we all know and love.  It looks like there will be two awesome choices for AT&T customers soon, and that's the way we like it.

Thanks, anon!

13

Youtube link for mobile viewing

If you're a fan, or just always looking for something fun and new for your Android device, Disney Mobile and Marvel Entertainment have dropped two Captain America apps for Android in the Market this past weekend.  First up is the Captain America live wallpaper, which features the familiar shield across your homescreen, and a quick tap sends a barrage of bullets to bounce and ricochet.  It should run well on any phone sporting Android 2.1 or higher that supports live wallpapers, and it's free.

If you're looking for something with a bit more action, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty is an HD action game for the Android platform, featuring 24 levels, stunning graphics, and an original storyline from Marvel writer Christos Gage and comic panels by Marvel artists Ron Lim and Christopher Sotomayor.  Battle Red Skull and the evil HYDRA soldiers with combo moves and stealth to save America and rescue your friends.  Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty runs on Android 2.2 or higher, on select Android devices.  It checks in at $0.99 in the Android Market.

Samsung Galaxy S II variant for AT&T images leak out

87

We have been waiting for quite a while to see some of the US variants of the Samsung Galaxy S II, and earlier this week we saw an un-named slider leak out, and it appears as though that was the AT&T version. BGR has some leaked images of the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, which has a slide out keyboard, for better or for worse. It is still yet to be seen whether it will release with a different name, or they will keep the Galaxy S II name, but earlier reports are showing that the devices are set to launch in the US sometime in August, which is right around the corner. So, did the keyboard kill it for you, or are you still interested? Let us know!
