What you need to know

  • Teracube is claimed to be the world's first smartphone to come with a 4-year warranty.
  • The mid-range smartphone is powered by a MediaTek Helio P60 processor and features a 6.2-inch Full HD+ resolution display.
  • You can now pre-order the Teracube for as low as $175 on Kickstarter.

A Strategy Analytics report released last month had revealed U.S. consumers are now keeping their phones for 3 years or more, mainly due to the increasing prices as well as the perception of diminishing innovation. Teracube has now launched a new Android phone on Kickstarter, which is mainly targeted at customers who are looking for a phone that they can use for at least three years.

The company's new phone comes with a 4-year warranty and is claimed to have been "engineered to last longer." Teracube warranty includes a free battery change and covers all parts, labor and two-way shipping costs. It will also offer an express replacement option so its customers will never be without a phone.

The Teracube phone has a 6.2-inch Full HD+ IPS display and runs on a MediaTek Helio P60 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0 GHz. It offers a 12MP + 5MP dual camera setup at the back and has an 8MP selfie camera on the front.

The other key tech specs include 6GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage, NFC, and a 3,400mAh battery with 10W charging. While the phone will ship with Android 9 Pie out of the box, the company has promised that the Android 10 update will be rolled out in Spring 2020.

Teracube can now be pre-ordered on Kickstarter for a starting price of just $175 for the first 100 units. The MSRP of the phone, however, is $349. As per the company, the phone will begin shipping in January next year.

Supported carriers in the U.S. include AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket Wireless, Metro by T-Mobile, Tracfone Wireless, H2O, Simple Mobile, Lyca Mobile, PureTalk, Consumer Cellular, Ultra Mobile, Straight Talk, Red Pocket Mobile, Jolt, Ting, Airvoice Wireless, and Google Fi.

  • Interesting. Even at $349 it sounds like it would be worth the price.
  • Yes, and even better with the $199 special that's on now
  • there I was ready to drop the 199 quid and then they only ship to the US :-(
  • Which country are you in?
  • A warranty is only as good as the company that stands behind it. 4 years from Google, Samsung, LG, Apple - - yes. An unknown? Even known companies can go under or just sell out in a way that voids the warranty. We bought Thomas the tank Engine wooden railway only for them to sell out and void the warranty.
  • My thought exactly. And also 4 year warranty doesn't equal 4 year software updates. (I'd be happy just with security updates). Lots of people use phones well pass 4 years still but the software is too outdated.
  • But putting money where my mouth is (manufacturers should be offering >= 3 years of hardware/software support), I would risk it even if it may not work out.
  • We're actually a well-funded company, so we'll definitely be around for 4 years whether we sell a million phones or not. Our founds have 5 businesses between them, obviously they're at scale now and don't require all their attention, so this is their passion project that they'll keep alive no matter how many customers we have. Thanks for the concern, I understand a lot of kickstarters let people down, but this kickstarter isn't to fund the company to get it going, it's more for PR and understanding our customer's needs, then iterating on it. Thanks and let us know if you have anymore questions.
