Google Play TV

Prices start at £1.89 per episode, £2.49 for HD

Don't be fooled by the fact that the app itself is still called "Play Movies" — Google Play TV has landed on British shores this morning. Individual episode prices start at £1.89 for SD or HD for £2.49, and season bundle prices vary depending on the series. Like Play Movies, purchased TV content can be played on the web or through the app on Android.

Google Play TV is offering a mix of British and American shows — highlights include The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Top Gear and Doctor Who. (There's also something called "Honey Boo Boo," which looks positively terrifying.)

So Brits get a pretty wide selection, including many shows that haven't made their way to rival service Netflix in the UK yet (thought admittedly it's still lagging behind iTunes). What's more, to celebrate the launch, pilot episodes of Battlestar Galactica, The Big C and Justified are free, too.

British Google Play users can fire up the Play Store app now to start browsing content. Let us know if you find any gems.

Google Play TV shows now available in the UK

I can see this working if play music all access were firstly brought to the UK, but secondly extended to "play all access" including differently priced tiers for music, tv, films, maybe even books and magazines. Why would I pay £2 an episode when I can get Netflix or lovefilm for £5 a month?

Agreed, they need an all access pass for this content or it's a no-go really. Prices are far too high for what content they have. I'd maybe pay that for a film ,but a single TV episode?

Definitely. I'd pay for all access, but £1.89 an episode is too much. Especially considering Netflix are going to start showing new episodes of Breaking Bad (and likely other shows in future) right after they've aired in the states.

In the UK I still don't have the Game Centre section that was in the JB 4.3 update?

It wasn't in the 4.3 update, it's a google app that was released in the play store, that was announced at the same time

I assume this is compatible with chromecast (when it launches here). Drop the price and they're onto a winner.

Honey Boo Boo - Our attempt to completely dominate the world by destroying it. Muwahahahahahahaaaaaaa! And you can PAY for it to happen. James Bond never saw this one coming, I'll tell you that. Goldfinger would die of envy.

Now they have to bring Google play TV shows and Google play all access music to Canada

Ahh, delicious irony. All we seem to watch in our houshold is British TV show (Dr. Who, Call The Midwife, Monarch of the Glen, etc.), all of which, I will readily admit, are miles better than anything American studios grind out.

Enjoy.

Good luck UK in trying to understand any conversations on Honey Boo Boo. You know a family has very poor grammar when they have to sub-title a US show in the US.

(Having said that, the Honey Boo Boo family appears to be nicer and more normal than any of the Housewives. Any exporting of those shows should be seem as a declaration of war.)

One viewing of that Honey Boo Boo show and I guarantee you'll be wishing Google would reverse this.
