AT&T and Verizon to connect cross-carrier VoLTE calls by 2015

Soon customers on AT&T and Verizon will be able to call each other with HD voice quality thanks to a partnership that will bring cross-carrier compatibility to each network's Voice over LTE (VoLTE) service. Currently, the higher quality HD voice benefits of VoLTE calls are limited to customers who are in a VoLTE network and who own a VoLTE compatible device where the calls are made to another customer on the same network.

While the partnership would increase the benefits of HD voice calling to a larger audience, it could also allow unlocked devices to utilize VoLTE calling, according to Reuters.

The technology could also allow customers to purchase devices that are not bound to a particular carrier and can easily be transferred to a different network.

Cross-carrier interoperability for VoLTE between AT&T Mobility and Verizon is expected by 2015.

Are you an AT&T or Verizon customer? What do you think of being able to get better voice quality when calling a friend on a different network?
