Google Play TV show availability expands to Australia

Still just four countries in total have access to TV shows through Google Play

Googe Play TV is expanding to just its fourth country worldwide today with the move down under to Australia. The country joins the exclusive company of the United States, United Kingdom and Japan, building on the prior availability of the "movies" side of Google Play previously. Australia now has access to pretty much every portion of Google Play, including apps, books, magazines and music (All Access, too).

TV shows may be one of the toughest content categories to obtain the proper rights to launch in an additional country, so you can somewhat understand why the rollout has been slower than something like books. Today's expansion makes us hopeful that TV shows will come to even more countries soon, but we're not holding our breath.

  • If it's anything like their iTunes TV it will just be the same crap that's been shown on their free to air TV stations. Don't expect anything new from the US on it..
  • No True Crime. No Walking Dead at all.
Okay, so it's not a place to go for the latest stuff. Season 3 of Game of Thrones is on there. Lets see how fast the new episodes turn up.
I'll pay if they turn up quickly. As in the next day. Not so keen if I have to wait months.
  • We won't get Season 4 of Game of Thrones until after Foxtel (as in.. end of season) this year unlike Seasons 2 and 3 I believe which were day after.. iTunes won't get it either.. *cough* alternative downloads it is..
  • I hope you're wrong. :p That said, with Foxtel getting exclusive rights for Game of Thrones, I'm pretty sure they'll try their best to ensure the only legal way to view Season 4 would be via their service.
  • Yeah good luck with that Foxtel.
  • If it is like any other Australian streaming/digital content you'll be better off using a VPN and signing up to the American service. I want to pay for my content but I don't want to get fucked in the arse by restrictive and over priced Australian licensing. The internet doesn't care for your geopolitical borders!
  • Good news, it's about time. Still, I'm pretty grateful to Google for looking after Australia as far as Play store access goes, we've now got a full selection as well as the devices section i.e. Nexus phones and tablets. Compared to most of the world we can't complain.
  • So that's nice and all about Australia but people with Verizon are still waiting for their kitkat for the S4! Come on SungSung, make Verizon roll it out!
