What you need to know

  • Google Maps is apparently crashing on Android Auto due to a bug.
  • The navigation interface appears to relaunch every five or 10 minutes.
  • Google has yet to acknowledge the issue.

Google Maps on Android Auto is designed to give you an uninterrupted guide on the road without requiring you to touch the screen, but a new bug seems to be preventing some users from having a seamless experience with the app.

As spotted by Autoevolution, the app keeps on refreshing for a number of users while in navigation mode. This reportedly occurs every five to 10 minutes for no apparent reason.

The problem appears to occur regardless of which Android phone is used. Some of those affected by the issue complained on Google's forum, and they own a Huawei Mate 20 Pro and a Google Pixel 3 XL. A Vivo X70 Pro owner even captured the issue in action.

According to forum comments, the problem affects both wired and wireless Android Auto connections. However, based on the number of complaints in the forum, the bug appears to be limited in scope. This implies that it is not as widespread as we fear.

Unfortunately for those who are experiencing the problem, a solution is currently out of reach, and Google has yet to acknowledge the bug. This means that the usual workarounds, such as resetting the phone or clearing the cache, do not appear to resolve the issue.

It's unclear how many people are affected by the problem. Android Central has reached out to Google for a statement, and we'll update this post as soon as we hear back.

  • Yup its been like that for long time now. Thank goodness for Waze.
  • Pixel 3xl here. I have seen the problem happen more often since the upgrade to Android 12. Wired and wireless...it doesn't matter what I do.
Lucky, it is the holiday and I am off from work and not worried so much about navigation and traffic. I would like to have a solution before the actual driving begins.
  • Simply put Android Auto sucks! brand new 21 plate car and a s21 Ultra and the amount of messing about I need to do to get this to work!! whereas my wife and her iPhone XS and 2018 car connects to carplay flawlessly everytime.
  • "Google Maps bug on Android Auto causes navigation to crash for some users" As long as it's not causing any cars to crash...
  • Android auto is an absolute mess. It causes my infotainment system in my Jeep to restart and sometimes no work until a entire vehicle restart.
  • Since upgrading to Android 12 on my Samsung S21 Ultra I haven't been able to get Message Notifications to work on either of my cars equipped with AA. I've tried every solution I could find online about it and nothing works.
  • Android Auto sucks right now on the most recent update. I can't stream music and navigate at the same time. It is choppy audio when the navigation is speaking and eventually the screen will freeze while the music is still playing. When I leave Android Auto and come back to it I get a blank screen. I have to unplug my USB cord and plug it back in and it will work for a bit before the same thing happens again. I really hope they update Android Auto soon because this is really annoying.
