Could a ruggedized version of the Galaxy S4 be in the works at Samsung?

Speaking at the launch of the Galaxy S4 today in Dubai, Samsung Gulf Electronics president Young Soo Kim said that a rugged version of the phone was expected in the coming months. Specifically, he was said to say the phone would be water and dust "proof", which would make it much like the Sony Xperia Z that Alex should have thrown in the Thames reviewed last month.

This is the first we've heard mention of such a thing, and we're remaining a bit skeptical. We just wanted to pass it along for discussion, so discuss away!

Preorder shipping updates have gone out, and they're full of good news

If you preordered your Samsung Galaxy S4 from AT&T, keep an eye on your inbox. AT&T has sent out updates to at least a few people stating the following:

Thank you for ordering the Samsung Galaxy S® 4 from AT&T. We are excited to announce that we are able to ship devices earlier than originally expected. Customers who preordered their smartphone early can begin receiving it as soon as April 25th.

They go on to say that shipping notices will be sent as soon as devices leave the shelves, and of course thanking folks for their order.

The actual release date for the phone is a bit of a mystery. We've heard dates from April 23 to May 1, and nothing seems to stick -- today AT&T says shipping April 30 on their own site, which matches up with what we saw originally

Update: AT&T has now slated a release in-stores of April 27 via their Twitter account.

What we do know is that official communication from AT&T says April 25, for at least some folks. If you preordered yours, did you get the same message? Shout out in the comments!

Thanks, Craig!

Over the weekend, one Romanian reviewer put the screen of the Samsung Galaxy S4 through a gauntlet of durability tests. Three different knives, a pen, a set of keys, and a fistful of coins didn't seem able to put the slightest mark on the S4's front face. This is good news for those that are on the verge of picking up one of these bad boys.

The Galaxy S4 is the first handset to use Gorilla Glass 3, which we've seen take a pretty harsh beating at CES, showing that it can do as well with impacts just as it can with scratches.

After seeing the video below, are you any more convinced about picking up a Samsung Galaxy S4? How highly does screen durability rate in your purchasing decisions?

At the IFA Global Press Conference 2013 in Sardinia, Samsung brought along the Black Mist Galaxy S4 to show the gathered press

I'm on the gorgeous Italian island of Sardinia this week, for the annual pre-IFA Global Press Conference. A chance for the industry and the press to get together and look ahead to the main show in Berlin in September, in a truly stunning setting. Several consumer electronics manufacturers have partnered with the conference, including Samsung -- well, Samsung Electronics, at least. So, what's this we see here, then? Looks an awful lot like the Black Mist Galaxy S4. Nestled front and center in the Samsung booth, the soon to be released Galaxy S4 is here. And, since I've not yet seen the S4 for myself, I spent a few minutes taking a look.

Still no dates given, but a great way to show your interest in Samsung's newest on Big Red

Yesterday Verizon confirmed that their Samsung Galaxy S4 would be available sometime in May, and today they have made the sign up page for the new Galaxy S model live. We know it's not the Verizon page most of us want to see when we talk Galaxy S4, but it's a start.

Potential owners can head to the page to sign up for more information, and more importantly, show that they have interest in the device. Carriers often use this sort of thing as a way to know how many units they need to have on hand for launch day.

We expect that number to be pretty big, but there will always be the chance that your store will run out before you can get your tail there to grab yours. Take a minute, sign up, and let them know they need to order yours from Samsung. When finished, share it in the forums with the rest of us waiting for this one.

The previous date of April 30 has been changed to April 23, price and selection remains unchanged

AT&T has updated the Samsung Galaxy S4 pre-order page and there is a new shipping date - April 23. The previous versions had a shipping date of April 30 for the phone, which put it a week past T-Mobile (April 24) and Sprint (April 27). The price remains the same at $639 or $199 with a new agreement for the 16GB model.

Of course we can't be sure that this date is final, but all of us would like to see it sooner rather than later. There's a lot there to love, and we certainly can't wait to have our very own for the requisite fondling.

Are you ordering an S4 from one of the carriers? Be sure to let us know who you're rolling with in our poll, then head into the forums where at least you can wait with friends.

Kernel source code is now available for the GT-I9500, GT-I9505, and SGH-I337M

GPL compliance is a wonderful thing -- Samsung has just posted the kernel source code for three Galaxy S4 models: GT-I9500, GT-I9505, and SGH-I337M. All three sources are currently available for download through the Samsung open source repository. While this doesn't help the average user (plus nobody actually has the phone yet), it will allow kernel developers to begin tweaking Samsung's kernel in order to get flashable zips ready for root users once the phone launches.

The Galaxy S family has been huge with the aftermarket developer community in the past, and despite some initial bad news, there is no reason that the Galaxy S4 can't reach the same level of support and popularity among ROM and kernel devs. It will be interesting to see how far this powerhouse of a phone will be pushed. The links to the source code can be found below.

No date was given, but previous leaked information points to May 30

Verizon has confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be available on their network during the month of May via Twitter this afternoon. We've previously seen a May 30 date leaked from Staples for the Verizon version of the S4, but no actual date was given today.

As just about every other US carrier has given out release information on their version of the Galaxy S4, it' nice to see Verizon say something -- even if it is just the month. With May right around the corner, I've a feeling we'll know more soon. Of course, we'll let you know as soon as we do.

Samsung's latest and greatest available for free on plans starting at £30 per month

We're edging ever closer to the day that real people can get their real hands on the Samsung Galaxy S4. There's naturally no shortage of options for anyone looking to pick one up, but the latest throwing their hat in the ring in the UK is TalkTalk. The MVNO carrier is still relatively new to the mobile game, but that hasn't stopped them going all out and launching one of the hottest phones to hit this year.

The Galaxy S4 will be available on TalkTalk from April 26, and pre-orders will begin on April 22. Price plans vary between "Small, Medium and Large" but the phone can be had free of charge on all plans from £30 per month.

Sales of Samsung's Galaxy S4 phones will go through the roof, tell us where you're going to use yours

All the major carriers in the US are going to carry the Samsung Galaxy S4, and we'll be seeing them hit the streets in the coming weeks. It's going to be a huge seller, that much were sure of. Samsung has taken their winning strategy formed with the Galaxy S3, improved everything on the hardware side, added a bunch of new features, then put it in a smaller case. People will be buying.

We're pretty sure this one will be heavily skewed towards Verizon, as there is no HTC One to consider for folks using Big Red. At least for now. But seeing how the spread forms between the different carriers is good data to have, so I'm asking -- Which U.S. carrier will you be getting the Samsung Galaxy S4 on? There's a poll in the sidebar to the right, or you can find it embedded after the break. Let us know!

While we're all here, let's look at last week's poll.

It looks like most of us choose Android and stick with it. That makes sense, as we're here because we're all fans. But it's still nice to see people coming over from those "other" phones. I'll ask this one again in a few months to watch the trend.

Individual release date details and pricing to come from carriers and retail outlets themselves

Samsung this morning has announced that the Galaxy S4 will be available in the United States by the end of the month. Individual carrier announcements are still to come, but here's what we know so far:

  • T-Mobile: Already announced its GS4 will be available May 1 for a $99 down payment. (Might we see that date shift to meet this April window? Wouldn't surprise us.) Update: T-Mobile will have it available online April 24, in stores May 1.
  • AT&T: We've got a pretty good indication that AT&T will begin to ship out Galaxy S4 orders (and presumably have them on store shelves) on April 30, but Samsung wants to remind everybody that it's going to be awfully easy to get your hands on the new Galaxy S4 in the very near future.
  • Verizon: Still no official date, but the phone did just show up on Samsung's site in black and white. (Not like we didn't know they exist, of course.)
  • Sprint: Previously said to look for it in the second quarter, so, yeah. Update: April 27 it is, folks. Preorders start April 18.
  • Other carriers: US Cellular, Cricket and C Spire are all on the same April time frame.
  • Retailers: The Galaxy S4 also will be sold at seven retail outlets (Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile, Costco, Radio Shack, Sam’s Club, Staples, Target and Wal-Mart). You'll not be able to shake a stick without hitting a Galaxy S4 it seems -- and that's a good thing.
  • The U.S. versions of the S4 will offer the proven powerhouse of the Snapdragon 600, with a new high -res 1080p 5-inch display. That, and 2GB of RAM have been crammed into a package that's actually smaller than the Galaxy S3 by reducing the bezels on either side of the device. The folks who have had the chance to use one are saying some good things, and we're looking forward to getting one of our own to play with and put through the paces.

We'll continue to tell you the official word from carriers and stores as they trickle out, in the meantime hit the break for the full press release from Samsung.

Samsung knows you like Galaxy S4 accessories, announces a few more

If there is one thing smart phone enthusiasts like more than a new phone, it's accessories to go along with it. Samsung knows this, too, and has announced a few of the official Galaxy S4 accessories this morning. While it's not the complete list of things we saw leaked last month, a couple of the favorites should be available soon -- hopefully along side the device itself.

First up is the Flip Cover we all know and love, but redesigned to fit the S4 perfectly. Available in seven colors (Black Mist, White Frost, Light Blue, Pink, Green, Orange and Yellow), the Flip Cover will retail for $39.99. A new take on the Flip Cover is the new S View design (pictured above) which has a clear cover so users can see information like SMS messages or the current time. It's available in Black Mist or White Frost for $59.99, and it looks like a new software mode will work in conjunction with the cover to put the information you need front and center of the window itself. Samsung will also offer what they're calling the Protective Cover+. It looks like a high quality protective case, and comes in White, Navy, Green, Blue and Pink. It will retail for $29.99.

Beside the cases and covers, Samsung announced a Spare Battery Charging System. Checking in at $49.99, it consists of charging stand, a wall charger, and a spare 2,600 mAh battery. This sounds like a very good price for the dock and the extra battery, and is sure to be a popular seller.

Of course, plenty of the existing Galaxy S accessories will work just fine with the S4. Besides the obvious like headphones and wireless media devices, the Smart Dock and Universal Multimedia Desktop Dock will work for various Galaxy S devices, including the S4. See the full fact sheet after the break.

The first 100,000 customers will get an exclusive version of Need for Speed 'Samsung edition'

Samsung has partnered with multiple companies to bring new content to the Samsung Hub for the upcoming Galaxy S4 launch in Europe, scheduled for April 27. EA is providing a version of Need for Speed Most Wanted that not only has been optimized for this particular phone, but includes "in-game Samsung branding." The first 100,000 European customers will be able to download the game for free through the Samsung Hub -- everyone else, including Galaxy Note 2 owners, can still purchase a copy.

Michelin will be offering their real-time traffic app 'Traffic' and eatery locator and reviewer 'Restaurant' apps at launch, with with tourist attraction app 'Travel' following this summer. The children's apps 'Nighty Night' and ‘Little Fox Music Box’ by Goodbeans will be Samsung Hub exclusives. Random House Mondadori is bringing 3,400 Spanish language books, which include international best-selling authors, to the Hub as well.

The full press release, with complete details from Samsung about these content providers, can be found after the break.

No Verizon logo on the home button, so you can cross that off your list of things to worry about

Up until a couple of days ago, we've only had leaks to confirm the existence of Verizon's version of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Today, Samsung has made two new pages live on its official website -- one for the black Verizon model, and one for the white.

Carrier branding looks to be more conservative than with the Galaxy Note 2 -- no home button branding in sight. Other than the Verizon logo on back, this version seems to be identical to the other carrier variants. The same specs and hardware features are shared with the entire U.S. Galaxys S family this time around.

For the official specifications list, as well as pictures from all angles of both the black and white models, check out the Samsung links at the bottom. If the previous availability leak pans out, we can expect Verizon to start selling their Galaxy S4 on May 30.

16GB pricing confirmed at $199 on-contract, $639 off-contract

It looks as though the early Staples document that leaked a release date of the Galaxy S4 on AT&T as April 26th was off by just a couple of days. Folks have pointed out to Engadget that they're seeing official pre-order availability and pricing for the S4 on the AT&T website. It's showing up for us as well, with pricing as you'd expect -- $199 and two years of commitment for a 16GB model in either white or black. Those willing to go off-contract will pay the hefty $639, and if for some reason you want just a 1 year contract, you can shave that down to $449.

If AT&T is your carrier of choice for the Galaxy S4, the anxious among us can get their pre-orders in today from the source link below. The site indicates free shipping, and people who have gone through with it are receiving estimated arrival dates of May 3rd for the devices. Have you pulled the trigger on this one yet? Sound off in the comments and let us know.

Preorders get phones first, general availability starts May 3

Samsung and Telus this morning announced that the Canadian operator will have the Samsung Galaxy S4 available starting April 27 -- providing you preordered, which you can do starting today. Phones will be in stores on May 3.

Telus is selling the Galaxy S4 for $199 with a Canadian-standard three-year contract (and a $50 data plan). If you buy it outright, it'll cost you $700.

Telus will have two colors available at launch -- white frost, which you see above, and black mist. An additional, unnamed color will be available later this year.

The new 5-inch Galaxy S4 to be tentatively available for AT&T on April 26, T-Mobile on May 1, and Verizon on May 30 says leaked Staples training sheet

So far nobody has given a firm date for the release of the Samsung Galaxy S4, but this document from Staples that was leaked to Engadget may hold the answers. Clearly marked as tentative, the sheet says the S4 will hit AT&T on April 26, T-Mobile on May 1, and Verizon on May 30. There is no mention of the Sprint model, and the leaked materials give no pricing for phones sold at Staples.

The S4 brings a larger 5-inch display to the Galaxy S family, and it comes in slightly smaller that its predecessor. With all new internals and updated software and features, it promises to be more than your new phone -- it will be your new "Life Companion"

While we're not so sure we would call a smart phone a life companion, plenty of folks are looking forward to the release of the S4, including all of us here at AC. According to this, we won't have to wait too much longer. With two great new top-tier devices releasing this month on AT&T, it's going to be a tough choice.
