You can now 'thumbs up' individual app reviews in the Google Play app

If you've wanted a way to show someone that their review of a particular app helped you, you'll be happy to see that you can now 'thumbs up' a review from the Google Play app. That's right, if you come across a review that you find worthy of being thanked, or liked, or acknowledged positively in some fashion, you can now do so right from your phone. To find helpful reviews, you can sort them by most helpful first, newest first or have the highest rated show up first. Previously, you were only able to use the button on the web, so it's great to see that make its way to the mobile app.

You still can't reply, unless you are the developer, but this is a great way to show appreciation for what was said about a particular app. All you need to do is head to the Google Play app, search for an app and then check out the reviews. On the right hand side of the screen you will notice a thumb icon next to each review, and you can tap that to interact. Google surfaces reviews that help give an overall impression of the app, so adding a thumbs up to reviews you find helpful will end up helping others as well.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Jared started off writing about mobile phones back when BlackBerry ruled the market, and Windows Mobile was kinda cool. Now, with a family, mortgage and other responsibilities he has no choice but to look for the best deals, and he's here to share them with you.
  • "Thumbs up if you agree!" I can already see THOSE reviews coming in. *shudder*
  • Agree. Yikes! Posted via the Android Central App
  • There should be a thumbs down as well.
  • Thumbs up to that!
  • There should be "Thumb up," "Thumbs down," and "This review is dumb and you should feel bad" buttons. Posted via the Android Central App
  • We need a button for "slap your stupid ass across the face" as well. Some reviewers need it. Moto X 2013 (U.S. Cellular)
  • There used to be a thumbs down, didn't there? Posted via the Android Central App
  • Clicking it would pop up a window and you would select helpful or not helpful I believe. Now they seem to have given you either the helpful option (giving a thumbs up) or marking it as spam through a pop up menu.
  • Ok. I see it now. Posted via the Android Central App
  • This thumbs up thing seems like a total step backwards. Posted via the Android Central App
  • It does. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Not really. Just having a thumb up button will get helpful reviews to the front, which is the whole idea. Having a "not helpful" option probably didn't serve much of a specific purpose. Posted via the Android Central App
  • For me it served the same purpose as the spam button now. If someone complained about something stupid, I'd mark it Not Helpful. Posted via the Android Central App
  • ^this.. because it makes sense. Like when someone complains with a 1* review that an app doesn't work on their device or Android version, when the dev clearly says it may not work on their device or Android version, I've always given a not helpful check, which is essentially the same thing as a thumbs down. • Thumbs down on this change because of the lack of a thumbs down option.
  • They really need a way to view by rating as well, I find it more useful to find out why an app is dissed than nothing but app fanboys or in the case of larger developers, employee yahoo 5 stars Posted via the Android Central App

  • Typical Google can never make up their minds especially when it comes to the Play store.

  • I don't understand - they've had a thumbs up or down option for years. Posted via the Android Central App
  • Yeah, they had a thumbs up and a thumbs down for years.. soooo.. what's new?
  • They should delete the extremely bad reviews. That's if they get enough thumbs down. Google Nexus 6P
  • Yep I've noticed that the past few days. You can still select spam in the menu next to the thumbs up icon though. Posted via the Android Central App on my Frost Nexus 6P
