Sprint bringing 'the latest in wireless innovation at CTIA' this month

76

We don't usually post all of our upcoming individual show events here on the front page. (We do, however, post our show schedule here.) But because so many were worried Sprint was getting out of the smartphone business after a relative no-show at CES in January, we'll make an exception this time.

As for what we'll see? More likely than not, something with the name "EVO" attached. Might be a true sequel, but remember that Sprint's told us the original EVO 4G and EVO Shift 4G are just the first in what will be a growing EVO brand.

Anyhoo, we'll be at CTIA in a couple of weeks to bring it all to you.

BBM again rumored to be Android-bound, possibly by year's end

24

It's kinda been the white whale of smartphone nerds -- RIM's BlackBerry Messenger running on something other than a BlackBerry. We've seen a number of third-party clients come and go with occasional success. But as a poll at CrackBerry.com indicated late last year, you all (and us, too) want BBM on your phone, be it BlackBerry, Android or iPhone.

And according to an anonymously sourced post at BGR, it might finally happen. The anonymous sources claim BBM will be headed to Android and iOS by the end of the year. And while it'll be functional (and free), it'll also be stripped down from the full BB version, meaning you'll get basic messaging functionality but not location or picture sharing, and the like.

This all, of course, goes hand-in-hand with the rumor that the BlackBerry Playbook tablet might end up running Android apps in some shape or form, so things are certainly getting interesting. [BGR via CrackBerry]

Motorola Flipout, Charm won't get Froyo, manufacturer says

22

If you've got a Motorola Flipout or Motorola Charm and are staying up nights waiting for a Froyo update, time to pour yourself a glass of milk, fluff the pillows and head to bed. It ain't gonna happen. Motorola just updated its increasingly less popular update timeline chart and broke the bad news -- the Charm and Flipout "will remain on Android 2.1." It's not that big a surprise, we suppose, but still is a disappointment.

And now, Motorola, it's about time to start letting us know which phones have a shot at being upgraded to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Droid X? Droid 2/Global? Droid Pro? Any of these ring a bell? [Motorola]

Verizon gives $100 discount on every Droid phone in stock

18

It looks like Verizon wants to start the month of March with a bang as they are offering steep discounts on every Droid phone in their inventory. It would seem that Big Red has slashed a cool $100 from the two-year contract price of the phones across the board. Here is a quick rundown on the deals to be had:

Even with the coming launch of the HTC Thunderbolt and the Droid Bionic, these deals may be too good to pass up if you aren't one to pine over LTE. [Verizon] Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

HTC Merge at the FCC again, this time with the user manual in tow

9

The HTC Merge has had quite a wild ride since we first went hands- on with it. After seemingly dropping off the face of the earth, it was deemed canceled, sold on eBay, turned up on Alltel and finally the big news arrived -- an official announcement of its release.  Although the official announcement lacked any launch dates or specific carriers, Verizon was assumed to be on that list given the fact they never removed it from their system nor bothered to stop shipping accessories.

The latest HTC Merge news is that it has now passed FCC approval. And while rumors may have suggested it was possibly being revamped for LTE, we're not exactly shocked to find out it still remains without. (In fact, judging from the tape/Photoshop job where the carrier logo would be, we're betting this is exactly the same model as what we saw, and it's been sitting on a shelf somewhere.)

In addition to passing FCC approval, if you hit up the FCC link you'll also be able to get a look at the (Still Verizon-branded) user-guide, if that's your thing. Still no release date as of yet but no doubt, it's coming soon. [FCC via Phonescoop]

Best keyboard, Farewell to my Motorola Xoom [from the forums]

0

Did Apple have some sort of announcement today or something? We felt a lot of hot air coming from San Francisco. All joking aside, if you're looking to escape the news from today hop on into the Android Central forums where we're talking about much cooler things then the latest from Cupertino.

If you're not already a member of the Android Central forums, you can register your account today.

iPad 2 versus Honeycomb (and others)!

78

Chart opens in new window

What's this? A giant chart comparing the spanking new iPad 2 against the Android Honeycomb tablets, the HP TouchPad and the BlackBerry Playbook? Sold! Do note that a few of the Android specs are still up in the air, but you'll get the gist of it. Android Honeycomb tablets are far superior over anything else known in this universe. Right? RIGHT?

By the way, if you're interested in more on the new iPad 2, check out all the coverage at our sister site, TiPb.com.

Google Body for Android tablets is available once again, for real this time

8

Just a heads up that Google Body is back in the Android Market, and it's now available for download on Honeycomb tablets. Again, you'll need a tablet running Android 3.0, not a phone running anything other than Android 3.0. But with it you'll be able to explore the human body from a muscular, skeletal, vascular and nervous point of view, and it's pretty darn cool. Download links and our hands-on video are after the break. Thanks, Richie!

European Xoom will have Flash at launch in the first week of April

2

Good news for those of you awaiting the Motorola Xoom in Europe -- it'll have Adobe Flash Player out of the box when it launches in the first week of April. That also lines up with the "within a few weeks" line that Adobe gave us for getting Flash on the U.S. Xooms. [via @fwa and @ryanstewart]

Motorola Xoom to arrive in the UK in early April for £500

8

Looks like the price that briefly leaked yesterday for the British Wi-Fi Xoom was just a little too good to be true -- precisely £50 too good to be true, in fact. PC World updated its Wi-Fi Xoom pre-order page today with a price of £499.99, compared to the £449.99 that was listed for a couple of hours yesterday. The retailer says it'll begin shipping Wi-Fi Xooms to Brits during the first week of April, and that these lucky folks will be the first in Europe to own the device.

If you're holding out for the UK 3G version, the Carphone Warehouse says these will be arriving in April, and has a page where you can register your interest, through prices are still nowhere to be found. [PC World, Carphone Warehouse]
