HTC ThunderBolt desktop docking station

Let's not be bashful here: This desktop docking station is what the HTC ThunderBolt has needed from the very beginning. The beloved phone and its 4G LTE data suck through a battery like nobody's business, and having a quick and easy way to charge is a must.

The desktop docking station is a breeze. You seat the phone in it -- it connects via the microUSB port -- and charge away. You can charge it with the standard battery installed, or with an extended battery and its fat extended battery cover. Works fine with either one.

And it gets better. Chances are if you have a ThunderBolt, you have a spare battery. There's a slot behind the phone charger to simultaneously charge a spare battery. And it works for a standard or extended battery.

Let's break down the options:

  • Charge the phone with a standard battery by itself.
  • Charge the phone with an extended battery by itself.
  • Charge the phone with a standard battery by itself, and with a standard battery in reserve.
  • Charge the phone with a standard battery by itself, and with an extended battery in reserve.
  • Charge the phone with an extended battery by itself, and with a standard battery in reserve.
  • Charge the phone with an extended battery by itself, and with another extended battery in reserve.
  • Or just charge an extra battery on its own, without the phone in the dock.

That's a pretty perfect set of options. There's also a cutout for the 3.5mm headphone jack, and it comes with the standard HTC USB charger and microUSB cable. About our only complaint is that the ThunderBolt's desktop clock is pretty plain, but it's not a deal-breaker by any means.

Check out a slew of pics after the break.

The palm touchstone charger is still the best out there. Other companies need to introduce inductive charging.

dmonzel says:

Does this dock start "dock mode" like the N1's did, or does it just act like a charger? If the latter, I managed to pick up nearly the same dock on Amazon months ago, the only difference being the headphone jack cutout (the left side of the dock is low enough to easily access it, though).

It starts the clock you see in the picture. That's it. :-/

tmqrm says:

If you download "desktop plus" from the market and have the official HTC Desktop Dock it will launch a clock with weather, alarm, brightness, and a couple more options when you drop the phone in the dock. The seidio dock won't work with this or launch any clock when you dock the phone (it just charges).

George West says:

Great question 'tmqrm' and I wondered if this will work with the HTC EVO 3D as I'm looking for a docking station that will charge a spare battery of different mAh sizes; so can this be used for the EVO 3D?

SAVJR says:

It is a shame, this dock should have been available at the time of release...still waiting for GB and with a slew of new (better) phones on the horizon - I think I'll skip it.

soccerfon711 says:

Same. I think I might try to sell this phone when something I really like comes to Verizon. And I don't think it will be an HTC device.

Who? says:

Unnecessary. 1) open kickstand 2) set phone in portrait, 3) plug in charger.

This is a money grab by HTC, who put the microsd slot on the side of the phone that rests on the table when you use the kickstand in landscape mode. Don't reward them for bad behavior.

milesmcever says:

Which is why they put the charging port pointing down when the phone is on the kickstand so you would have to buy a docking station. But my battery lasts me about 3 days without charging with the extended batter and the rom im running so they can keep their over priced dock.

VCL says:

I wonder if the Palm Touchstone charging base would work with the Thunderbolt and the new inductive charging back cover on it? It would be the same thing as the huge pad.

El Jefe says:

Wow, you guys sure have been pusing the Thunderbolt accessories lately. It seems like every accessory post is about Thunderbolt extended batteries, cases, & now the dock. Do you have an overflow of stock for the Thunderbolt?

thundersome says:

Can I ask a few questions here? WTF took so long for HTC to release this thing and why doesn't it have a hdmi out port so we could finally hook this thing up to the tv? This seems like an accessory that should have been available at launch and the barebones basic functionality should command a price point of $30 at most. Not impressed with HTC right now. Gingerbread for TB has been a fiasco, this charging dock is a joke, TB won't get the latest Sense even though it's been proven to work well on custom roms, and now just months after its release a "big brother" phone, Vigor, is to be released which will put the final nail in the coffin of the TB which I expect will never even get ICS.

This dock has been around on HTC pedia. I got one from them. Its the same one. Does all the things on top.

Unobtanium says:

What about "charge while in a rugged case," like Seidio, Otterbox, or Trident? No? Pass.
