What you need to know

  • Sony may be limiting purchases of the PS5 to one per household.
  • This comes after a Reddit user found the source code on PlayStation's website indicated as much.
  • The company has reportedly increased PS5 production to 10 million units by the end of the year.

It might be even harder to get your hands on a PS5 this holiday than originally anticipated. Reddit user Kgarvey discovered that the source code on direct.playstation.com indicates that Sony will limit PS5 consoles to one per household.

We can verify ourselves that the source code of website still contains this message, which you can see below.

"You can only purchase one version of the PS5 Console: Disc or Digital. You have already added one PS5 console to your cart."

As IGN notes, this isn't anything new for the company. Sony also limited PS4 preorders to one per household on its website when it first released in 2013. Still, nothing is stopping you from going to other retailers like Amazon or Best Buy and picking up another console there.

Sony is reportedly increasing production of the PS5 to 10 million units by the end of this year due to the increased demand for gaming amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. It is expected to release this holiday, though the company has not revealed an exact launch date or price. During Geoff Keighley's hands-on with the DualSense controller, PlayStation Worldwide Head of Marketing Eric Lempel said that the company would give fans notice before preorders went up.

Kgarvey also discovered that there will be a new label in use denoting PS4 products that are compatible on PS5. It's unclear if this if strictly referring to software through backward compatibility or if it could be used on hardware, like controllers, as well.
