What you need to know

  • Samsung is revamping its Galaxy Flip Z with a 5G variant.
  • The new model also comes with the Snapdragon 865+ processor.
  • It'll be available both unlocked and as a carrier model starting August 7.

For a phone that's designed to represent the cutting edge of mobile technology, it's no surprise that Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip is being refreshed as a 5G variant. That next-generation connectivity — and a whole lot of processing power — is thanks to the Snapdragon 865+, Qualcomm's most powerful mobile SoC.

Not only will that make the Galaxy Z Flip 5G the first clamshell foldable phone to feature 5G, but it's also the first Samsung phone to sport Qualcomm's latest hardware — just beating out the Galaxy Note 20. The rest of the hardware rounds out the same, though, which leaves the rest of the spec sheet in the era of the Galaxy Note 10 — not bad, but certainly a compromise in order to get that amazing folding form factor.

In addition to the three colors the Galaxy Z Flip is already available in, the 5G variant will also carry an air of mystery with it thanks to two new color choices: Mystic Gray and Mystic Bronze.

The phone will be available both unlocked and from carriers starting August 7 and will be offered by most of the usual suspects: AT&T, T-Mobile, Best Buy, Amazon, and of course, Samsung's own online store. It'll cost you $1,449, though Samsung is also offering trade-in values of up to $650 for "eligible devices."
