Once you have the system up and running, you'll get unlimited data within your billing cycle, although in this case unlimited means 1TB of data before "network speeds may vary". This should come as no big surprise, seeing how T-Mobile's 5G Home Internet service is capped at 1.2TB before speeds start to slow.

Still, the download speeds and 1TB of data offer a pretty good value for the price, and this is doubly true if you're already a user of Mint's excellent wireless service. Of course, 5G home internet is never going to be as fast or reliable as traditional fiber internet, but if you're on a tight budget (and you live in an area with good T-Mobile coverage) then Mint's new service might be exactly what you're looking for.

High-speed data is technically capped at 35GB per month, after which speeds could slow if the network becomes congested. Aside from a free mobile hotspot and a few international benefits, there also aren't as many perks as you might get from other wireless carriers, but that's a small price to pay when you consider the value here. 

I'll put it this way: Mint is a simple, affordable carrier for folks who want simple, affordable wireless. And if you've been thinking about switching anyway, this deal presents an outstanding opportunity.

What is an MVNO?

MVNO stands for Mobile Virtual Network Operator, and it's another company that offers service for all your connected gadgets. You've heard of them even if you didn't know it; companies like Cricket Wireless, Mint Mobile, and Google Fi are all MVNOs.

What that really means is that they lease giant amounts of usage rights from bigger carriers with actual infrastructure like towers and cables in place. Take Google Fi Wireless, for example. It's a separate company, but it runs on T-Mobile's U.S. network, with many agreements outside of the U.S., allowing it to operate almost anywhere in the world.

The agreement means they are sort of like you, a customer of a major cellular carrier. Of course, they do things a lot differently and use a lot more of the network than you or I ever will.

Things get a little murky with some of these arrangements. What I mean is that a physical network carrier like Verizon can also run an MVNO that uses its network (in this case, Visible).

The company books are kept separately, and there are different plans and rules, but the big company also owns the small company. I don't know why they choose this route versus offering different plans with similar pricing, but I'm sure it's a wise business decision. Carriers are really good at those.

So what's the difference?

While they seem to be duplicates of each other, they really aren't. There are three major differences between an MVNO and a "regular" carrier.

The first one, and what you might have read about on the internet, is that an MVNO can offer service at much cheaper rates. In some cases, prices are almost cut in half for what sounds like the same service plan on the same network. That's kind of true, but you need to know about the other two differences as well.

Next is the difference in customer service. Now I'm not saying that big carriers like AT&T or Orange offer excellent customer service, but they do offer more help than you'll get from a typical MVNO. Cutting back on customer support staff is one of the ways that an MVNO can offer such cheap service. They won't leave you high and dry, but don't expect expert answers for every question you might have or a quick solution to every problem.

Finally, we have to talk about network deprioritization. What sounds like a made-up word is a real thing, and it happens frequently in some places. When a network location gets really crowded and it starts to affect the quality of your connection, MVNO customers take a backseat to customers of the parent network.

I know that sounds confusing, so here's a real-world example of it in action: I use Google Fi for my carrier, but until recently, my wife used T-Mobile. Google Fi uses the T-Mobile network, so coverage and quality are the same 99% of the time. The one percent difference? If we take a trip to downtown D.C. for any sort of event, like seeing the cherry blossoms or for the July 4 fireworks show, my phone service sucks.

T-Mobile customers have priority when it comes to using the network, and MVNO customers, like me and my Google Fi phone, get to use what's left over. When it's super crowded and people are densely packed into a smaller area, your MVNO carrier connection can suffer. It's a real thing, even though you won't see it very often.

Should you use one or should you stick with the big companies?

If you make the switch to an MVNO, you will save money, that's for sure. But you need to be aware of and OK with the drawbacks.

Are you the type of person who doesn't want to hassle with problems? If you would rather carry your phone into the carrier store and let them fix whatever is wrong, then an MVNO might not be for you.

A bigger issue is the coverage. I live way out in the suburbs and never see any depriorization issues in my day-to-day life. But as mentioned, they are there, and it does happen. If you live or work somewhere like Manhattan or Los Angeles, you might not get the quality of service you want when you use an MVNO, especially during peak times when people are using their mobile devices.

What you really need to do is try it for yourself. All MVNOs offer a month-to-month service plan, and many even allow you a risk-free trial for just this purpose. Don't shut off your current service, but order a SIM card from any of the popular MVNOs that seem like a good fit and give it a try. If you can test under the worst conditions, like a holiday or during a sporting event, even better. Make sure you have service when and where you're going to need it.

If it doesn't work for you, that's OK. You can always try again next year, because the improvements carriers make to their networks also benefit the MVNOs that use their infrastructure.

If it does work, and you're okay with being your own first level of support, you can save yourself a significant amount of money.

The Pixel 9a finally arrived yesterday, but there's one Google Pixel 9 deal that makes the midrange device seem almost superfluous. Buy the flagship from Mint Mobile with one year of the Unlimited plan and you'll get a straight $400 off the device AND 50% off the wireless. It's as simple as that. 

Comparing the Google Pixel 9 vs the Pixel 9a, the base model flagship is pretty much superior in every way. You're taking a slight hit in the battery size, but the Google Pixel 9 boasts more RAM, better cameras, and Wi-Fi 7 connectivity.

Let's break down some of the numbers so you can see why this isn't your run-of-the-mill wireless deal. For starters, the budget-friendly Google Pixel 9a starts at $499 while this Mint Mobile promo knocks the price of the superior Pixel 9 down to $399. The Unlimited annual plan won't break your budget either, as the deal knocks the price of the wireless down to a mere $180. 

In other words, this offer gets you an excellent Android phone and a full twelve months of unlimited, T-Mobile-powered wireless for $579, or just $80 more than buying the Pixel 9a unlocked. You can also use affirm and pay $49 per month for the phone-wireless combo. If that's not an incredible Pixel 9 deal, I don't know what is.

Of course, the deal only really makes sense if you're cool with switching to a new wireless plan. The Pixel 9 is no slouch either. This Google flagship utilizes the powerful Tensor G4 chipset with 12GB of RAM and all of the latest AI-boosted software features, plus you'll enjoy excellent cameras, a gorgeous 120Hz display, and seven years of OS/security updates. The phone is better than the upcoming Pixel 9a in just about every way that counts, and if you can take advantage of this deal, deciding between the two should be a no-brainer. 

This Mint Mobile deal has been around for a while, but I've received word that it could be expiring on March 31st, so don't wait too long if you're interested.

The reveal of the Google Pixel 9a appears to be just days away (if you believe the latest rumors), but retailers are already prepping for the occasion by dropping some of the best Pixel 9 deals this side of Black Friday. 

Two of our favorite wireless carriers, Mint Mobile and Visible, are dropping 50% off the popular flagship when you bundle your purchase with one year of wireless, but which deal is best? Well, the answer isn't exactly simple, so let's break it down. 

Visible vs. Mint Mobile: which Pixel 9 deal is better?

I'll start by saying that both of these deals are pretty remarkable. Mint Mobile's offers are noteworthy due to the sheer amount of cash you can save by paying for a year of the Unlimited plan in advance. 

You're looking at one of the best Android phones on the market AND 12 months of wireless for significantly less than it would cost to buy the phone unlocked from Best Buy or Amazon. Mint Mobile's Unlimited plan is no slouch either: for what amounts to $15 per month, you're getting unlimited talk, text, and data on T-Mobile's vast network, plus a mobile hotspot, Wi-Fi calling, and free calls to Mexico and Canada. 

That being said, if you don't mind paying a little more for a premium wireless experience, Visible might be the better option here. Priced at $395 for a year (about $33 per month) the Visible Plus plan gives you unlimited talk, text, and data on Verizon's legendary 5G Ultra Wideband network, plus HD streaming, 50GB of premium data every month, and a bounty of international benefits that you'd usually expect to get from a Big Three carrier. We have seen no shortage of great Mint Mobile deals over the past six months, but it appears that the good times may be nearing an end. The plans are simply named after how much data you'll receive: 5GB, 15GB, 20GB, or Unlimited, and you pay for your service in 3, 6, 12-month increments of time. Once your data allotment runs out for the month, Mint doesn't cut you off, your speeds just slow down. 

Still, if you're a particularly heavy data user, Mint Mobile may not be the right carrier for you. After all, even the Unlimited plan slows after 40GB. For other folks, Mint's buy-in-bulk system may not be as convenient as the modular plan systems offered by other MVNOs. But if you simply want an affordable T-Mobile-powered wireless service that doesn't skimp on premium features, Mint Mobile's Cyber Monday sale is ready to hook you up with long-term coverage for dirt cheap.  

Black Friday has presented another opportunity for Mint Mobile to flex its great deal muscles (yes, deal muscles are a thing, duh), and the offers on display do not disappoint. Which offer is better? It's ultimately going to depend on your needs and whether your area has better coverage from T-Mobile or Verizon. What you need to know

• T-Mobile announced Wednesday that it had completed its purchase of Ka’ena Corporation, which owns Mint Mobile, Ultra Mobile, and Plum. 
• The company made a commitment to keep Mint Mobile's entry-level plan priced at $15. 
• Mint and Ultra Mobile users will also get access to select T-Mobile features, like scam screening and free Canada roaming.

As of today, T-Mobile officially owns and operates Mint Mobile, the company announced in a press release Wednesday, May 1. T-Mobile closed a $1.35-billion deal to acquire Ka’ena Corporation that was originally announced in March 2023 but was held up due to regulatory concerns. Aside from Mint Mobile, the Ka’ena Corporation is also the parent company of Ultra Mobile and Plum, and all three brands will be folded under T-Mobile. 

T-Mobile finally got approval from the Federal Communications Commission to move forward with the deal last week and swiftly completed the acquisition, which was more than a year in the making. Concerns that Mint Mobile's budget-friendly offerings might be changed by joining T-Mobile appear to have been settled since T-Mobile is pledging to keep a $15 per month Mint Mobile plan available.

"We are excited to maintain the unique style and entrepreneurial spirit that make Mint and Ultra truly special, while also finding ways to supercharge their growth and leverage some of the secrets of that success into other areas of our business," said Mike Katz, who is T-Mobile's president of marketing, strategy, and products.

While the price of Mint Mobile's $15 plan isn't changing, it is gaining new features from T-Mobile. Mint Mobile users will now get access to the company's call screening technology, which identifies calls associated with known scammers with a "Scam Likely" caller ID. Additionally, Mint Mobile customers can use unlimited talk, text, and up to 3GB of data while in Canada for free. 

Ultra Mobile users will soon get an "enhanced data roaming option" while in Mexico on most plans, too. T-Mobile says that it will keep looking for more ways to add features to Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile plans over time.

A few prominent Mint Mobile figures will be joining T-Mobile, including celebrity and former partial Mint Mobile owner Ryan Reynolds. The company says Mint founders David Glickman and Rizwan Kassim will join T-Mobile, leading their respective teams previously under Ka’ena Corporation. 

For T-Mobile, closing this deal marks the company's biggest acquisition since it bought Sprint in 2020.
