Disney's been pushing Hulu and Disney+ closer for years. Now, a new report suggests the company is getting ready to make the standalone Hulu app almost unnecessary by merging its experience into Disney+.

Business Insider has obtained internal documents that show Disney is working on a multi-phase internal project called “Project Gemini.” Reportedly, the plan is to integrate Hulu’s content, features, and technology into Disney+, and eventually shut down Hulu’s standalone app once users have migrated over.

This may contradict Disney's recent public statements. The company said this month it had no current plans to sunset the Hulu app. However, the latest report presents a different narrative, suggesting that Disney is reallocating resources to Disney+ and reducing the significant development work on Hulu itself.

The integration has been years in the making

The change has been in the pipeline for some time. Disney started adding Hulu content to Disney+ years ago, enabling bundle subscribers to watch Hulu programming without ever leaving the Disney+ app. More recently, the company announced profile linking, which allows eligible users to sync their watch history, recommendations, and watchlists between the two services.

The pitch to consumers seems to be that rather than hop from service to service, viewers will find Disney originals, Marvel shows, Star Wars content, FX series, Hulu originals, and live TV features all in one place. Apparently, Disney is looking to bring more Hulu-specific features to Disney+, including live channels and DVR functionality.

There’s a business reason for the strategy, too. Having two different streaming services means two different technology stacks, two different teams, and two different user experiences to support them. Bringing those systems together could reduce costs, boost discovery of content, and keep subscribers on the site longer.

For Hulu subscribers, there’s nothing to do just now. The app is still there, and Disney is still selling Hulu subscriptions. But the recent rollout of profile-linking tools at Disney makes it clear the company wants users to start bringing their Hulu watching history and preferences into Disney+ now.

Android Central's Take

For users already deep into the Disney ecosystem, Disney+ and Hulu, live TV, and possibly even theme park bookings and shopping all under one roof could make life a whole lot easier. It’s difficult to argue with fewer apps, more streamlined recommendations, and a single account experience. That said, Disney’s insistence that Hulu isn’t going anywhere while reports keep suggesting otherwise feels a bit like watching the company slowly pack Hulu’s boxes while insisting it hasn’t decided if it’s moving out. If the goal is to make the experience better, users will probably go along with it — but Disney might want to stop pretending the destination isn’t already mapped out.

I have a confession to make — I paid for an expensive monthly Netflix subscription for way longer than I probably should have. Netflix is the streaming service that started it all, and it's known for outstanding originals and a standout content library. It's a streaming giant, and if you're only subscribing to one platform, it feels like it should be Netflix, right? I'm not so sure that's true anymore.

For a while, I was paying for Netflix out of obligation rather than value. After all, the streaming wars are well underway, and Netflix's library of content has been thinned as a result. Content rights holders have pulled back their licenses for use on their own streaming services, rather than giving them all to Netflix. The shows and movies I paid a monthly fee to Netflix for aren't even on the platform anymore, and recent Netflix originals underwhelmed me.

That's why I canceled my Netflix subscription for good last year, and after the latest round of price hikes, I'm glad I did. The base, ad-supported plan is a dollar more expensive, while the two ad-free plans are $2 more expensive. That's on a monthly basis, so the recurring costs will add up over time. It might seem like a nominal increase, but if you aren't getting extra value out of it, why pay more?

At $27 for a 4K plan with spatial audio, Netflix subscriptions simply aren't worth the cost. That's why I pay for three streaming services instead.

Paramount Plus

Paramount Plus is my favorite subscription service, and for as little as $9 per month for the Essential plan, you can watch loads of content. I subscribe to the Premium plan for only $13 per month, which eliminates ads and supports Showtime originals, video downloads, and live streaming of CBS and live sports. You can stream on three devices simultaneously, and Paramount Plus won't try to lock you out if you travel or share your password.

The content library is what sells Paramount Plus for me. The service includes the best dramas airing on CBS, including long-running series like "NCIS," "Criminal Minds," and "Blue Bloods." It also includes incredible originals, namely the Taylor Sheridan collection, which features the "Yellowstone" universe, "Mayor of Kingstown," "Tulsa King," and "Landman." Finally, you get Paramount movies like the "Transformers" franchise.

I don't think you'll find a better combination of TV series and movies available on one platform than Paramount Plus offers.

To round out the experience, live CBS streaming is a great perk, especially during sports season. You can stream the NFL on CBS, the UEFA Champions League, live UFC fights, and college basketball games — including March Madness.

Hulu

For similar reasons to Paramount Plus, I subscribe to Hulu. I find that streaming services anchored by legacy cable TV channels offer a better experience than new-age streamers, such as CBS for Paramount Plus, NBC for Peacock, and ABC for Hulu. The streaming service starts at $12 per month with ads or $19 monthly without them. The higher-priced Hulu Premium plan enables video downloads, too.

Again, I love Hulu's content library, with ABC series like "The Rookie," "9-1-1," and "Grey's Anatomy" being available on the streamer. The best part about using Hulu to follow ABC originals is that episodes appear on the streaming service right after they air, so you can watch week to week rather than waiting for an entire season to drop. There are also Hulu original shows and movies to fill out the catalog.

Hulu is great for people who want to replace cable TV with one service. You can get Hulu with Live TV, or bundle Hulu with Disney Plus and ESPN Unlimited. There are also third-party bundles outside the Disney family that let you add HBO Max, Paramount Plus, Cinemax, and Starz to your subscription. Be warned, though, these bundles get pricey fast.

I do think the price of Hulu could be better, but the $19 Hulu Premium plan is still $8 cheaper per month than Netflix's highest tier, so it's hard to complain.

Prime Video

Finally, there's Amazon Prime Video. This streaming service is a bit underrated, partly because Prime Video has a smaller content library. It's a fair criticism, but I love it because most of us already pay for Amazon Prime. If you do, it's free, or you can subscribe to Prime Video separately for $9 per month. Some users don't like that ads are now included unless you pay $5 per month, but again, I don't mind it since I pay for Prime anyway.

Prime is surprisingly valuable, especially for football fans. The NFL's "Thursday Night Football" games stream exclusively on Prime Video, so you'll need to keep track of your favorite teams. The same goes for basketball lovers, as select NBA games are streamed on Prime Video. Amazon seems to be going all-in on live sports lately, so Prime Video is a good subscription to have.

Prime Video originals can be exciting too, like "Reacher" and "Cross," for instance. If you have a Prime subscription already, it's worth seeing what Amazon has to offer rather than paying for Netflix separately.

Maybe it's time for you to ditch Netflix, too

To find out which streaming service is actually worth the money, consider the content you watch and the platform that has the most of it. Don't subscribe to streaming services just because they're popular and you feel like they're necessary, like I did with Netflix for too long. After switching to Paramount Plus, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video, I'm spending money on streaming services that provide value at a reasonable cost.

It's well understood that Netflix is the world's leading streaming platform, but the service's lack of good deals (not to mention the regular price hikes) means that its competitors have been eyeing the throne for a while. 

Disney Plus, for instance, just launched a deal that could save you 26% on your first month of the Disney/Hulu Bundle. That's a full month of Disney Plus' AND Hulu's entire content library (with ads) for only $9.99! 

After the promotional period is over, the popular streaming bundle will return to its regular price of $12.99 per month, but that's still a savings of 58% when compared to buying the two subscriptions separately. 

For $9.99, this Disney and Hulu streaming bundle deal gives you a full month's access to both streaming service's libraries of content, from films and TV shows to original programming. 

You'll have to deal with some ads and you won't have the ability to download titles for offline viewing, but again, it's ten bucks for thousands of hours of entertainment. The promotional period should also give you enough time to decide if you'd like to stick with the membership or go with a different streamer, such as YouTube TV. 

How much does the Disney bundle cost?

The Disney Plus and Hulu bundle (with ads) usually costs $12.99 per month, but this deal knocks the price down to $9.99 for the first month. The ad-free bundle costs $19.99/month and comes with the ability to download TV shows and films for offline viewing. 

There are also options that get you Disney Plus, Hulu, and HBO Max for $19.99 per month (or $32.99 with no ads) and a Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN Unlimited bundle that'll cost you $35.99 per month (or $44.99 per month with no ads). 

If you want live sports and local news (including Super Bowl coverage), you'll have to sign up for the Hulu + Live TV bundle. Starting at $89.99 per month, this cable replacement gets you access to over 95 live TV channels, plus Hulu (with ads), Disney Plus (with ads), and ESPN Select. You even get a three-day trial if you're not ready to commit right away. 

What does this Disney Bundle deal include?

For $9.99, this streaming deal gets you one month of both Hulu and Disney Plus with ads. Only new and returning customers are eligible, and the offer expires on February 17th. 

Can I watch the Super Bowl with the Disney bundle?

If you want to watch Super Bowl LX on Sunday, February 8th, you'll need the Hulu + Live TV bundle. As I described above, this streaming bundle gives you instant access to over 90 live TV channels, including NBC, which is where the Super Bowl will be aired. The subscription also gives you access to Hulu (with ads), Disney Plus (with ads), and a subscription to ESPN Select. 

The live TV streaming bundle costs $89.99 per month, but if you want to watch the big game for free, you can take advantage of Hulu's three-day free trial. Since the streaming service lets you cancel at any time, you can sign up Friday night, enjoy the weekend of Super Bowl festivities, and cancel Monday morning without paying a cent.

Black Friday has arrived, and it seems like the streaming deals are all anyone is talking about. One offer in particular has captured my attention and could save you some serious cash if you play your cards right: from today through December 1st, sign up for a year of the Disney Plus and Hulu Bundle and you'll only pay $4.99 per month for 12 months. Since the streaming bundle usually costs $12.99 per month, you're looking at a total discount of 61% on a year of content. It's as simple as that.

As you might have heard already, there is some serious drama happening over at the YouTube TV and Disney HQs. It's summertime, which means outdoor barbecues, long bike rides, and, apparently, another new streaming bundle to think about. As of today, you can sign up for Disney Plus, Hulu, AND Max at the same time and pay as little as $16.99 per month with ads or $29.99 per month to go ad-free. Yes, it's just one more streaming bundle to add to the pile, but I have to admit that it's a pretty good way to save some cash if you're sick of juggling all your various streaming bills. 

As tiresome as it may be to hear about another new streaming bundle, let's face it: you're probably paying for all three of these services already anyway. And while previous bundles have simply featured Disney Plus joining its existing properties together, this is the first time we've seen Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney Entertainment collaborate for the benefit of subscribers.

Let's do the math and pretend you're signing up for the ad-free bundle (which is the better deal, by the way). Individually, the Disney Plus Premium and Hulu (No Ads) plans cost $13.99 per month and $17.99 per month, respectively, while Max's Ad-Free tier will set you back $16.99 per month. For those three streaming services, you're looking at a total of $48.97 every single month. 

The new streaming bundle costs just $29.99 for all three streaming services, which means you're saving nearly 20 bucks on entertainment every month. That's enough to buy, I don't know, half a tank of gas? A sandwich? Stuff is expensive these days, but your streaming bills don't have to be.

Earlier this week (Mar.27), Disney Plus announced that Bundle subscribers in the U.S. will now get access to Hulu's content on the platform. This merger makes it seamless for users to watch all their content in one app rather than switching back and forth. If users aren't subscribed to the bundle, they can find Hulu's content available via "upsell options" across multiple devices at an added $2 monthly.

Disney Plus also wanted to make the merger visually evident, so it's launching a new campaign, starting off with a new logo. The company states the rollout will include a new Disney Plus intro color palette that mixes Hulu's green with the legacy blue.

Joe Earley, president of direct-to-consumer at Disney Entertainment, said, "[the] official launch of Hulu on Disney+ gives viewers even more opportunities to easily discover and enjoy thousands of titles all in one place, underscoring the extraordinary value of the Disney Bundle."

Google could launch the Pixel 9 series with three variants—Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL—a first for Google. 

A recent leak revealed renderings of the alleged true base Pixel 9 device. The leaks suggest that the Pixel 9 will sport a smaller 6.03-inch display, with 152.8 x 71.9 x 8.5mm dimensions and a potential 12mm bump due to its camera placement.

The upcoming series could showcase a horizontal camera array for a pill-shaped look, similar to the Pixel Fold, and will arrive with two cameras like its previous model. The post adds the Pixel 9 may offer a completely flat display with four rounded corners around its frame. 

There's more: in January, a batch of images leaked and were touted as the base Pixel 9, but information now suggests that it was the Pixel 9 Pro with a 6.1-inch flat display. At the same time, some more images of the device leaked, but OnLeaks claims that those were of a third model: the "Pixel 9 Pro XL," and not the Pro model.

Surprise, surprise! Some S24 users get a new update

The April update rolled out earlier than usual on March 27 for Galaxy S24 users. It brings security patches and bug fixes, including fixes for some of the Galaxy S24 series' persistent camera issues. 

Android Central confirmed that the U.S. version of the April 2024 update brings Instant Slow-Mo support to videos with a 480x480 resolution, as noted in international versions of the update. That said, confirmation of other camera improvements was not specifically mentioned in the changelog.

The 818MB update vaguely mentions improved stability, reliability, and security with the April patch.

To check if your Samsung Galaxy S24 smartphone has received the over-the-air April 2024 security patch, open the settings app and navigate to the software update page. If it appears, start downloading the update — which can range from about 600MB to 900MB, depending on your region. After the update downloads, follow the on-screen prompts to install it on your device.

Vivo launched its latest foldables in China this week, the X Fold 3 and X Fold 3 Pro. Both foldables have the same 6.53-inch outer panel and 8.03-inch inner panel. The devices have 120Hz AMOLED screens on the inside and out. The X Fold 3 is the thinnest foldable around, thanks to its 4.65mm profile when unfolded and weighing only 219g—making it the thinnest foldable in the market. The X Fold 3 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and it has a trio of 50MP cameras at the back, with 80W charging tech.

The X Fold 3 Pro is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and features Vivo's custom V3 imaging module. It has an OmniVision 50MP main camera, a 50MP wide-angle lens, and a 64MP telephoto lens with OIS.

It still remains unclear when these phones will make a global debut.  Vivo hasn't detailed an international rollout just yet, but we should have more details over the next few weeks.

Google announced that Gemini Nano will be available to Pixel 8 users as a developer preview in the next Pixel Feature Drop. This new update brings two handy features: Summarize in Recorder and Smart Reply in Gboard. Google initially stated that Gemini Nano won't be available for the regular Pixel 8; however, they've had a change of heart.

Following numerous requests from users and developers ever since the Pixel 8 Pro became the pioneer smartphone to receive Gemini Nano last year, they wanted to give users and developers a chance to experiment with Gemini Nano in hopes of gathering feedback.

If you own a Pixel 8 or 8 Pro, the next update will include two new features: the auto-summarization feature in the Recorder app and the Smart Reply feature in Gboard.

• The Walt Disney Company announced the rollout of "Hulu on Disney Plus," available for all U.S.-based Disney Bundle subscribers.

Today (Mar. 27), it was announced that Disney Bundle subscribers in the U.S. will now find "Hulu on Disney Plus" as its rollout begins.

According to a press release, Hulu on Disney Plus merges both platforms' streaming content libraries in one place. The company states subscribers will begin noticing Hulu titles, recommendations, sets, and collections on Disney Plus without switching apps. Disney hopes this brings a more customizable and personal experience for users viewing content on their platform.

Additionally, standalone Disney Plus subscribers will find Hulu's content available via "upsell options" across multiple devices. This means users will find a "convenient" way to upgrade their plans to the Disney Bundle, starting at $2 more monthly.

The post reiterates that Disney Bundle plans begin at $9.99 per month. It's worth mentioning that Hulu on Disney changes nothing; both services are still available on their own if consumers desire.

Disney urges users to create profiles for those who will be watching and to check their settings to ensure they're finding the content they care for most.

Joe Earley, president of direct-to-consumer at Disney Entertainment, said, "[the] official launch of Hulu on Disney+ gives viewers even more opportunities to easily discover and enjoy thousands of titles all in one place, underscoring the extraordinary value of the Disney Bundle."

Meanwhile, Disney Plus is launching a new campaign to commemorate Hulu's inclusion, beginning with a brand-new logo. The company states the rollout will include a new Disney Plus intro color palette that mixes Hulu's green with the former's legacy blue.

Moreover, the orchestral mnemonic (the sound during its animation) was reimagined by Ludwig Göransson, an Academy Award-winning composer.

Disney is also launching campaigns across social media platforms, digital spots during broadcasts, and more for on-site locations at the Disneyland Resort.

Disney Plus and Hulu have been running this merger in beta since November, and its rollout today makes it official. Users should begin noticing the availability of Hulu content on the Disney Plus app with the option to upgrade to a Bundle as the day progresses.

Prime Video recently increased its subscription by $2.99 for an ad-free experience, yet its in-video navigation has been a big issue since its inception. Despite charging ever-increasing prices, many of these platforms still let users deal with their clunky interfaces. So why are streaming platforms forcing customers to pay more while offering an average user experience?

Platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Max, etc., have replaced traditional cable subscriptions as a go-to source of entertainment. According to a recent study, Americans spend 20 hours a week on these platforms and pay an average of $46 per month for these services. The reason is the wide variety of content that is constantly refreshed on the platform weekly, sometimes even daily. However, in their pursuit of content acquisition, these streaming giants seem to be neglecting one crucial point—user experience.

According to a recent survey conducted by Forbes Home, Amazon Prime Video has the second-highest number of subscribers in 2024 (200 million). However, only 14 percent of the respondents felt it was easy to navigate through its UI.

The woes of a clunky UI

For many users, fast-forwarding and rewinding or navigating Prime Video’s clunky UI can be bothersome. The interface sort of lags when you try to scrub within the video, making it difficult for users to gauge where they actually left off. 

A Reddit thread showcases the problems users face today on Amazon Prime Video. One user even goes so far as to say that the platform has the worst user interface. 

“Some of the original Amazon content is worth watching, but that’s all they have going for them. It’s truly hilarious that Amazon is one of the biggest corporations in the world. They spent $1 Billion on their ‘Lord of the Rings’ TV show, and yet they can’t even get something as basic as a functional user interface right,” a user added.

Another user comments that “much like Amazon’s product search nowadays, their Prime Video search is hot garbage. And now they’re adding ads; they might as well just give up altogether now.”

Richard Lachman, the director of digital media in the RTA School of Media at Toronto Metropolitan University, says people often don’t find features in common when switching platforms, which can lead to a frustrating experience. “Some features aren’t easily available, some are buggy, and some aren’t available on all platforms,” he added.

Amazon Prime isn’t the only platform that has been criticized for its UI. Hulu and Max (formerly HBO Max) also had users complaining about navigation inconsistency and overall glitchy UI.

Mia Eltiste, a user experience (UX) researcher based in Austin, Texas, reviews streaming platforms and their interfaces on TikTok. In one of her videos, she points out that Hulu’s navigation bar keeps disappearing when returning to the home screen. “Do not put your navigation on the top bar; put it on the side,” Eltiste states.

As users scroll down vertically, the bar keeps disappearing, but when it’s on the side, it’s easier to access. She adds that the platform should ensure the navigation bar is available on all pages—not just the home screen.

Moreover, while everyone feels that Netflix has nailed its UI, many feel the search bar still needs work, and watching the end credits of a series or movie seems impossible because the UI jumps to the next episode or movie you can watch. Android Central’s Jerry Hildenbrand agrees with the sentiment and says that he finds it frustrating to search for things to watch. 

“Netflix looks nice and is easy to use, but it doesn’t show me enough content. Nobody wants to use the search from their phone, so it’s important to show me what ya got.”

Striking a balance between content acquisition and UI

Lachman says the business strategy for several of these platforms isn’t focused on user experience as a differentiator but on content acquisition. It gets to the point where some services are rushed to launch, “spending the bulk of their budget on content without mature tech/UX teams and a priority on understanding and responding to user experiences.”

He feels that user complaints about UX are not a reason people choose to unsubscribe to streaming services, but this is set to change as users start taking UI into consideration when deciding to leave or subscribe to a service. “If there are fewer players, all with high-quality content, then the UX teams may gain some priority in decision-making and budgets.”

According to Ampere Analysis, global streaming services are set to increase their total content spending by 7 percent in 2024 to $46 billion. Netflix will spend $17 billion this year acquiring content, while Amazon’s total video and music expense in 2023 was $18.9 billion.

Back in 2022, Amazon Prime Video redesigned its home page, giving it a modern facelift. The current UI features a simplified navigation menu, a new Live TV page, and redesigned carousels for better content discovery. However, this redesign focused on highlighting their broad selection of content and not on the basics of how the app functions.

How can platforms do better?

According to Eltiste, any platform that wants to improve its user experience should focus on being functional, reliable, and usable. Still, many companies don’t even think about it being a pleasurable experience on their platform.

Lachman says that a better way to approach UI is to focus on usage and content consumption. Companies should also pay attention to user frustrations and track social media complaints about the UX and product features. 

In 2023, Max made some changes to its user experience amid the merger between HBO Max and Discovery Plus into one platform. Following complaints about its glitchy interface, TechCrunch reported that Max was set to gain an updated user interface with various improvements to deliver a seamless transition for existing HBO Max subscribers across most platforms.

Lachman notes that companies need to prioritize UX in budget, hiring, and strategy. “Make sure user experience champions are the key members of decision-making and empower them to dedicate resources to improving the interface.”

As the streaming landscape constantly changes, focusing solely on content acquisition might not be enough to attract or retain subscribers. Platforms also need to prioritize user feedback, which could help them retain their subscribers in the long run.

• Hulu has notified customers in an email about a subscriber agreement update starting March 14, prohibiting the sharing of Hulu logins with non-household members.
• Only devices associated with the primary personal residence can use the same login, similar to Netflix's policy.
• Hulu will analyze the use of your account and reserves the right to "limit or terminate access" for rule-breakers.

Hulu is preparing to stop users from sharing passwords with those outside their homes, joining the streaming crackdown trend.

Variety reports that Hulu has dropped a heads-up to its customers about a subscriber agreement update kicking in on March 14. The agreement's updated version dated January 25 explicitly says users can't share their Hulu logins with non-household members.

In an email to subscribers on Wednesday, the Disney-owned company also informed subscribers about a tweak in the terms of service, honing in on the sharing of passwords, as caught by a Reddit user (via The Verge).

"We're adding limitations on sharing your account outside of your household, and explaining how we may assess your compliance with these limitations," Hulu stated in the email.

There's no big surprise here. Disney, set to fully take the reins of Hulu this year, is putting the kibosh on password sharing not just for Hulu but also for Disney Plus. The company has already laid down the rules in Canada, and you can bet it's heading to the United States soon.

Disney has also made some changes to the fine print on Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN Plus. The services spell it out in their terms of service: don't try to "impersonate" an account owner, basically meaning, don't use their password.

Hulu's rule is clear: unless your service tier allows it, no sharing your subscription beyond your household, which means "the collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside therein." In simple terms, if they're not under your roof, they can't ride on your subscription, similar to some of your favorite streaming services like Netflix.

On smart TVs, things might get a bit tricky. Netflix ties the household to the account holder's main TV. If Hulu follows suit, watching it on your TV from a different spot might not work unless you connect a separate device to it.

The email and terms of service don't mention how Hulu will check if you're playing by the rules or how fast it'll drop the hammer. What's clear is that the platform will "analyze the use of your account" and "limit or terminate access to the service" if you're caught breaking the rules.

It's been months in the making, but Disney is finally starting to roll its Hulu service into the Disney Plus app. Customers who currently subscribe to the Disney and Hulu Duo Bundle — that's the one that costs $9.99 with ads and $19.99 without — should see a little Hulu tile appear on the list of included services within the Disney Plus app, as in the image above.

The merge was initially talked about back in May and Disney launched new subscription bundles back in September to get ready for the big move. Now, Bundle subscribers can access a limited portion of Hulu's content until the full merge takes place in March 2024.

Disney hasn't specifically said what will or won't be available within the Hulu section in the Disney Plus app during this "beta" period, however, the company said it's doing a staged rollout of content so that parents and families can get adequate parental controls in place before everything is available.

As such, Disney has revamped parental controls and made changes to password sharing to ensure that profiles are used to help manage content instead of sharing across households in disparate geographical locations.

What's more interesting is that Disney isn't removing the Hulu app from app stores worldwide. Instead, this is designed as a way for Disney Plus Bundle subscribers to access all the content they pay for in one app instead of having multiple apps installed. Folks who just subscribe to Disney Plus or Hulu (and not both services) can continue to use the individual apps to watch their favorite content.

Disney Plus and Hulu are teaming up to offer a single app experience for U.S. subscribers, starting with a beta test in December.

During the company's recent earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that the unified streaming app will be available in beta next month to existing Disney bundle subscribers, who currently pay $9.99 a month with ads and $19.99 without (via Variety).

This means you'll no longer need to juggle two separate apps to access all your favorite content from two of your favorite streaming services. Instead, you'll have everything you want to watch in one convenient place.

It's not clear yet if the rules will change in the future. The merged app will fully roll out in late March 2024 and will initially be available to U.S. subscribers. This makes sense considering Hulu is currently only available in the country.

That said, there have been rumors that Disney might eventually expand Hulu's reach beyond the U.S., which would open up the possibility of the merged app becoming available internationally.

In the meantime, the imminent beta release aims to give parents plenty of time to set up profiles and content controls to ensure their kids only see age-appropriate content.

Iger revealed these plans back in May during Disney's second-quarter earnings. The plot thickened with news that Disney shelled out a whopping $8.61 billion to snatch up Comcast's piece of the Hulu pie. Back then, Disney suggested merging Hulu content into Disney Plus before we flip the calendar to 2024.

Disney has always had a majority stake in Hulu, but now that it's buying out the remaining share from Comcast, the company's in complete control, which means it can call all the shots. Nevertheless, Disney has assured customers that they can still enjoy Disney Plus and Hulu as separate apps, even after the merger.

It's been a rough day for Disney fans. On the same day that we reported on Disney's crackdown on password sharing, we learned that the Walt Disney Company will also be increasing prices for both Hulu and Disney Plus' ad-free plans, starting October 12th.

This hike will cause the monthly price of Disney Plus' ad-free plan to jump from $10.99 to $13.99, while Hulu's equivalent plan will increase from $14.99 to $17.99. The price of the popular Trio Premium bundle, which includes Disney Plus (no ads), Hulu (no ads), and ESPN Plus (with ads), is also increasing to $24.99 per month. 

If this price hike is giving you déjà vu, it's probably because a very similar rate increase was announced by the company this time last year. YouTube TV, Paramount Plus, Peacock, Spotify, and others have also announced price hikes in recent months, leaving many of us to wonder what the future of affordable streaming may look like.

On the bright side, the ad-supported plans will stay the same price for both Disney Plus and Hulu, and ESPN Plus subscribers won't see any change to their monthly bill. 

Disney also announced the launch of a new bundle plan that will give you ad-free access to both Disney Plus and Hulu for $19.99. That "Duo Premium" plan will be available to subscribers starting September 6th.

Disney announced its FY Q2 earnings this week, where the company made a surprise announcement about one of its streaming platforms. During the earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the company will soon bring Hulu content into Disney+.

Iger stated that the company will "soon begin offering a one-app experience domestically that incorporates our Hulu content via Disney+." He says that the move will not only provide "greater opportunities for advertisers" but will also streamline its content offerings into a more unified experience so that bundle subscribers no longer have to switch back and forth between apps.

Disney will still offer the apps separately, but the move may help entice non-bundle subscribers.

The new "one-app experience" closely follows Warner Bros. Discovery's move to merge its two streaming services into one. The new Max streaming service launches later this month and will incorporate both HBO Max content and Discovery+ content.

Like HBO Max and Discovery+, Disney+ and Hulu generally serve two different audiences, so it will be interesting to see how the company handles the move.

As for the newly combined Disney+Hulu experience, an exact launch date wasn't given, but Iger said it would roll out by the end of 2023 and that Disney will share more details about its plan at a later date.

In addition to the new app experience, the company is additionally raising the price of its ad-free streaming plan later, which will increase from the current $10.99 per month. While Disney+ subscribers dropped globally by $4 million, the company is confident in its pricing.

Iger said during the call that "the pricing changes we’ve already implemented a proven successful, and we plan to set a higher price for our ad-free tier later this year to better reflect the value of our content offerings." The ad-supported Disney+ tier will remain the same.

Where is Hulu available?

While Hulu currently offers plans in the U.S. only, it's believed that the Disney-owned streaming service plans to expand internationally in the future.

Specifically, Hulu's on-demand media library is currently available in all U.S. states and territories, as well as on U.S. military bases around the world. Hulu Plus Live TV is currently only available in the 50 states. Hulu also offers Hulu Japan, limiting its content library to users within Japan by checking the IP addresses of the devices visiting their website.

In 2021, Disney also started rolling out the Star streaming hub within the Disney Plus app in countries where Hulu is not currently available. The Star brand page features movies and TV shows from Disney Television Studios, FX Productions, 20th Century Studios, and Searchlight Pictures.

The Star hub is currently accessible to Disney Plus subscribers in Australia, Austria, Canada, Europe, Germany, Italy, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, the U.K., Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

What devices support Hulu?

While the latest versions of Hulu and Hulu with Live TV are available on most devices, there are a handful of products that still feature the "classic" Hulu app, which means you won't have access to live TV, select Premium Add-ons, or new features. It should be noted that while PlayStation 3 and Xfinity X1 TV Boxes support the Hulu app and include access to the Hulu streaming library, live programming is not currently available. Unlike the Xfinity devices, however, PlayStation 3 includes access to various add-ons.

Hulu's on-demand media library boasts a rotating roster of shows and classic movies from networks such as CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, FX, ESPN, AMC, Crunchyroll, 20th Century, and Disney including the entire run of series like Modern Family and The Mindy Project.

The platform also features an award-winning lineup of Hulu Originals series and limited series. Among the most popular Hulu Originals are The Handmaid's Tale, The Great, Woke, Pen15, Shrill, and Reservation Dogs. There are also a number of trending limited series currently streaming now on Hulu, including The Dropout, Pam & Tommy, and Nine Perfect Strangers.

Hulu + Live TV

The Hulu with Live tier also offers a collection of live channels featuring sports coverage, breaking news, and current shows. While available channels vary slightly depending on where you live, channels available in most locations include ABC, CBS, The CW, FOX, NBC, SYFY, TCM, TNT, USA, Lifetime, and CNN.

It's worth pointing out that the channels available on Hulu with Live TV vary depending on where you're located. So while the above list includes an overall roundup of the channels offered, you'll need to enter your zip code on the Hulu website to see exactly which channels are accessible in your region.

You can also enhance your Hulu with Live TV membership by adding one of four premium networks (Showtime, HBO Max, Cinemax, STARZ), which vary in price from $9 to $15 depending on which premium channel you choose. Hulu also offers three separate channel bundles, which are catered to three different types of Hulu viewers.

For an extra $8 a month, the Entertainment bundle adds the American Heroes Channel, CNBC World, Cooking Channel, Destination America, Discovery Family, Discovery Life, DIY Network, FYI, Great American Country, Lifetime Movies, and Science to your channel collection.

Meanwhile, the Español bundle costs $5 per month and adds CNN en Español, Discovery en Español, Discovery Familia, ESPN Deportes, FOX Deportes, History en Español, and NBC Universo. The fees for each available premium network — HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and STARZ — vary from $9 to $15 depending on the network you choose.

The Sports Add-on costs $10 per month and provides live and on-demand content from NFL RedZone, TVG, TVG 2, MAVTV, Outdoor Channel, and Sportsman Channel. Hulu also offers an ESPN Plus Add-on, enabling sports fans to enjoy live events, original programming, and content from the ESPN Plus library directly on the Hulu app. That add-on costs an additional $7 per month.

Outside of the channel bundles, Hulu offers the Enhanced Cloud DVR and Unlimited Screens Add-ons, which increase the amount of DVR storage on your account and the number of devices you can stream on simultaneously, respectively. Each of those add-ons is available for an additional $10 a month.

Hulu account limits, profiles, and parental controls

All tiers of Hulu permit streaming to two devices simultaneously and allow for up to six separate profiles per account. As mentioned above, the Unlimited Screens Add-on allows subscribers to stream on an unlimited number of devices at home, plus up to three on the go, for an extra fee.

Unfortunately, that add-on is only accessible to subscribers of the Hulu with Live TV or Hulu (No Ads) with Live TV plan and is restricted when watching content through one of the premium network add-ons. That means viewers sharing one account can only stream Premium Add-on content from a total of five screens at one time.

Regarding parental controls, Hulu gives subscribers the ability to create a Kids Profile, ensuring that viewers using that profile can only search and watch kid-friendly content available in the Kids hub. You can also contact Hulu to adjust the age setting for the entire account, which will block mature content across all profiles connected to the account.

Free trial

Hulu encourages potential subscribers to try out its service for free for one month or one week, depending on which plan you select, by signing up for a Hulu free trial. If you choose to try the ad-supported tier or the Hulu tier without commercials through Hulu's free trial, you'll receive the service for free for one month. Unfortunately, none of the Bundle plans come with free trials at this time.

Disney+ has managed to offer great content at a surprisingly affordable price, but that's about to change as the company has just announced a slew of changes coming to its services.

On Wednesday, the Walt Disney Company announced that it would be raising the prices of its current plans for Disney+ and Hulu in the United States. Disney+ will increase by a few dollars to $11 per month, while Hulu will increase its ad-supported and ad-free tiers to $7 and $15, respectively, up from the current $6 and $13.

Some bundled subscriptions are also changing, with the "legacy" Disney Bundle with Hulu ads going up by $1, while additional bundles are being added at lower prices. Disney previously announced a price increase for ESPN+ that takes place later this month.

To make up for the price hikes, Disney will start offering a "cheaper" tier for Disney+, which will cost the same $8 per month as the existing plan but will now include ads.

New pricing for Hulu individual plans will occur on October 10, while the remaining pricing and plans (minus ESPN+) go into effect on December 8.

According to Kareem Daniel, chairman of Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, the company is looking to expand its plans to provide "greater consumer choice at a variety of price points to cater to the diverse needs of our viewers and appeal to an even broader audience." In other words, costs are rising, and the company needs to make up for it somehow.

The announcement coincides with the company's earnings report on Wednesday, reflecting higher revenues but more operating losses. According to Disney, "Direct-to-Consumer revenues for the quarter increased 19% to $5.1 billion and operating loss increased $0.8 billion to $1.1 billion." The operating loss was mostly attributed to Disney+. Despite that, the company reported that more than 14 million subscribers were added to the service.

Disney is not the only company bowing to the effects of a growing streaming industry as companies compete by investing more in compelling content. Netflix has had a notably tough year that ultimately led to the service announcing that it, too, will introduce an ad-supported tier that will debut sometime in early 2023. Warner also announced that it plans to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into a single streaming service next summer, although exact details on the newly combined service are still largely unknown at this moment.

Disney notably reported 221 million subscribers between its three streaming services, beating out Netflix, which recently dropped to 220.67 million.

• You can no longer create a new Hulu account on Android and smart TVs, possibly due to Google Play's new billing policy.
• New customers must now sign up through the streamer's website or non-Android devices.
• Existing customers can still log in to the Hulu app.

Hulu appears to be the latest fallout from Google Play's new billing requirements, as new customers are unable to sign up for the streaming service on their Android phones or smart TVs.

As spotted by 9to5Google, the Hulu app on Android devices and Android TV-based smart TVs no longer allows new customers to create an account. This also precludes anyone from signing up for a free trial.

If you have no existing subscription and want to sign up for Hulu, you'll need to do so through its website or on a non-Android device. Otherwise, you can log in to your account on the Android app as usual.

Android Central has reached out to Hulu for comment and will update this article as soon as we hear back. However, while the service did not provide an explanation for the latest change, it is clearly the result of Google Play's new billing policy, which went into effect in April, requiring developers to process in-app transactions through Google's own billing method.

A message on the app's home screen reads: "Sorry, we’re unable to do sign ups in the app. If you’re already a subscriber, log in below to start watching."

Previously, when you opened the app, Hulu displayed options to start a free trial or subscribe right away for a starting price of $5.99 per month.

The new requirement, which allows Google to take a cut of every in-app transaction, did not go down well with developers. In response to Google's policy, Audible and Barnes & Noble recently removed in-app purchases from their Android apps.

To be fair, Google had been lenient with the new requirement, giving developers a grace period of more than a year between announcing it in September 2020 and enforcing the policy earlier in April.

As a result, developers have sought ways to bypass the new system, including advising customers to make their purchases directly through their websites. Hulu is the latest platform to embrace this alternative.

Amid price hikes and new tiers for its various streaming services, Disney has announced that it's bringing more value to Hulu+Live TV with free unlimited DVR for all subscribers.

The rollout means that users previously paying for additional DVR storage will pay less for their subscription going forward, while those that did not opt-in for the extra storage add-ons will automatically receive unlimited DVR at no additional cost. Previously, Hulu+Live TV came with 50 hours of DVR, and add-ons could grant up to 200 hours for as much as $15 extra per month.

With unlimited DVR, users will be able to access recordings (including fast-forwarding) for up to nine months, similar to what YouTube TV offers at no extra cost.

This comes just after Disney bundled both ESPN+ and Disney+ with Hulu+Live TV while raising the subscription cost by $5. This brings the subscription cost just above YouTube TV, although it arguably brings more value by including two popular streaming services.

"Hulu+Live TV is becoming more valuable and attractive to consumers." says the president of Hulu, Joe Earley, in a statement on Friday. "Through one single subscription, users get access to 80+ live channels — including all major broadcast networks — as well as Hulu, Disney+, ESPN+, and soon Unlimited DVR."

"Guided by our relentless focus on delivering the consumer a high-quality user experience, we will be one of the only pay-TV providers — traditional or streaming — to offer this feature as part of the base plan at no additional cost."

The new unlimited DVR will be available for all Hulu+Live TV subscribers from some of the best streaming devices starting April 13.

Disney recently announced that it is introducing a cheaper streaming tier for Disney+ later this year, which will be supported through ads. The company hopes that these efforts to add more value to its services will bring it more subscribers, with a goal of 230-260 million Disney+ subscribers by 2024.

Hulu subscribers are bracing for subscription prices to go up as the streaming platform starts sending out notices to viewers on Tuesday.

The prices of Hulu's standalone ad-supported and no-commercial tiers are each going up by $1 each to $6.99 and $12.99, respectively. The price increase will take effect on October 8, giving subscribers a month to prepare for the change.

According to Variety, Hulu's Live TV subscribers and those on the Disney+ bundle won't be affected by the price increase. We've reached out for additional details on the price increase, including why the platform has chosen to raise its price after dropping the price of its ad-supported tier back in 2019.

Variety notes that the move comes after Disney's recent earnings report which reported Hulu's first profit, suggesting Disney may want to keep up the momentum.

It may also be a way for the platform to push customers towards the Disney Bundle, which provides Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu at a lower price than they would each cost separately.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek noted in the company's recent earnings call that while churn for individual services is relatively low, "churn rates on the bundle are even lower," therefore the company would focus much of its marketing efforts on the bundle. This would also reinforce Disney's decision to discontinue Hotstar in the U.S. and roll the programs into the Disney Bundle.

Hulu is currently available on many of the best streaming devices, making it easily accessible for subscribers. However, the increase could potentially steer users away. That said, it still remains cheaper than the competition, including Netflix and HBO Max, the latter of which recently introduced a cheaper ad-supported tier for $10 a month.

While Hulu's cheaper plans don't include live channels, both Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV offer an impressive lineup of live channels spanning news, sports, and entertainment. Hulu + Live TV offers less channels than YouTube TV, but it's more customizable and offers more variety in channel bundles and add-ons. So which service is the best for you?

Hulu vs. YouTube TV: Prices and features

If you're comparing Hulu and YouTube TV based solely on price, Hulu offers a pair of plans that are exponentially cheaper than YouTube TV. The ad-supported Hulu plan starts at $6.99, and the ad-free plan costs $12.99 per month. While both plans provide access to Hulu's extensive on-demand media library, you won't have access to live programming.

In fact, the only Hulu plan that's truly comparable to YouTube TV is Hulu + Live TV. Hulu + Live TV starts at $64.99 per month and includes Hulu's full ad-supported media library as well as 65-plus live channels. Subscribers can also choose to upgrade to the ad-free Hulu + Live TV plan for $72.99 per month.

Viewers who subscribe to either of the Hulu + Live TV plans also have the option to expand their plan with eight different Hulu + Live TV add-ons, which vary in price. This includes premium channel add-ons like HBO Max and STARZ, as well as a selection of channel bundles like the Entertainment Add-on and the Español Add-on. Hulu + Live TV also allows up to 50 hours of cloud DVR storage as part of its plans. If you need more space, you can upgrade to Hulu's Enhanced Cloud DVR for $10.99, which increases your storage space to 200 hours.

While YouTube TV offers just one plan for $64.99 per month, the basic plan includes 85 broadcast and cable networks and unlimited Cloud DVR storage. YouTube TV also offers a variety of premium channel add-ons, which can be added to your monthly subscription for an extra fee. Among the premium channels offered are EPIX for $6/month, AMC+ for $7/month, and HBO Max for $15/month.

Sports fans who choose to subscribe to YouTube TV may also want to consider the Sports Plus premium add-on, which costs an additional $10.99 per month. Meanwhile, YouTube TV's Entertainment Plus bundle costs $29.99 a month and includes HBO Max, Showtime, and STARZ. That bundle saves you about $5 when compared to adding each channel separately.

Regarding streaming quality, Hulu promises that both its on-demand library and live TV programming are available to stream in 720p, 1080p, 4K Ultra HD, and 60fps high definition (HD). The quality will automatically adjust based on your streaming device and available bandwidth to ensure the best picture quality possible.

While YouTube TV offers some titles in high definition (HD) or 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) that can be viewed on devices with HD or 4K capabilities, HD playback is currently unavailable for YouTube TV streaming on a web browser except for Safari.

Hulu vs. YouTube TV: Profiles and parental controls

It's worth pointing out that both Hulu and YouTube TV allow up to six accounts per household. But where Hulu only allows users to stream on two devices simultaneously across profiles, YouTube TV allows three simultaneous streams on different devices. That being said, Hulu + Live TV subscribers can add an Unlimited Screens feature for an extra $9.99 per month, which enables you to stream on an unlimited number of supported devices connected to your Home Network at the same time.

Hulu's plans are month-to-month. There's no long-term commitment and you can cancel at any time. Except for the plan that includes completely different streaming platforms (Disney+ and ESPN+), there is no difference in the content available to you. The only difference mostly is the advertisements you'll see.

People — especially marketers — love to throw around terms like 4K. Everyone wants a 4K TV and to watch their favorite shows and films in 4K, and why not, right? We want to get all the pretty colors and the deepest blacks, right? Well, 4K is easy to slap on a box, but actually playing a movie in 4K requires the data to be packaged for transit and then unpackaged in a specific video format that is supported by both the source content and your TV or console. There are several standards out there for manufacturers and content creators to use, but one that will be of extra importance over the next few years is AV1.

So what makes AV1 so special? Well, it's a royalty-free format, which means that using it comes with fewer headaches.

What is AV1?

AV1 is a video format standard that is developed and managed by the Alliance for Open Media, an alliance that includes dozens of major manufacturers and digital giants like Google, Apple, Amazon, and Samsung. This non-profit alliance was developed to form an open video standard that is more efficient and affordable for all kinds of users on all sorts of devices.

See, previous standards like AVC (and its successor HEVC) were expensive to license, impossible for open-source projects to use, and a gamble for everyone involved. Because of these issues from standards developed and managed by the Moving Picture Experts Group — the group behind all the MPEG versions — a number of tech companies started developing open video standards such as Google's VP9, Mozilla-backed Dalaa, and Cisco's Thor.

AV1 is the successor of these three standards, developed with a goal towards being a standard that can be more widely used and more efficient — which is important when you're trying to serve up millions of HD or UHD streams at the same time. High-def isn't the only place AV1 is hoping to improve things, though, as AV1's various decoder levels start down at 240p@30fps. Even lower-resolution video can benefit from AV1's efficiency, which tests from Netflix and Facebook have shown is 25-50% more efficient than competing codecs.

As a quick lesson, efficiency for digital video relates to how small of a bitrate you need in order to still keep video quality high. If Codec A can deliver a 1080p@60fps video in 60MB while Codec B can deliver that same quality video in 40MB, then Codec B is 33% more efficient. Being able to squeeze a higher quality video out of a smaller file is good news for the end-user — who can use up less of their data plan — and better news for content providers, who can serve more users at a time. Google recently swapped Google Duo calls to AV1 to improve quality and reliability for users making calls on congested or low-bandwidth networks.

Remember how YouTube, Netflix, and others downgraded all their video during the height of the COVID lockdown because European telecoms said they were being overwhelmed? Using AV1 could prevent things like that from happening as much in the future.

Of course, we have a long way to go before we get to the point where we can see these sorts of benefits, because AV1 is still a work in progress; both in terms of actual AV1 codecs and especially in terms of hardware support.

AV1 Software support vs. hardware support

Before we get into the weeds here, there are two ways a video standard can be supported on a device: if it is hardware supported, then when you play an AV1 video, the CPU offloads the decoding to the GPU, freeing up the CPU to keep doing other things while the GPU handles decoding and playing the video. If a device lacks the hardware support for a codec, then software decoders can still be used to play the video. Still, the CPU has to handle the heavy-lifting of decoding and playing the video, which can slow down your device and, in some cases, overtax it if your device doesn't have a super-powerful processor.

AV1 has been software-supported on Chrome, Opera, and Microsoft Edge since 2018 and Firefox since 2019, but even then, that support isn't always a sure-fire thing. The software "containers" that encode videos in AV1 and then decode them for playback — called a codec — are still mostly works in progress. SVT-AV1 is a stable codec Intel and Netflix collaborated on but is explicitly designed for big, beefy data center servers. The decoder dav1d developed by VideoLAN's — the maker of VLC, the popular open-source video player — and FFmpeg's open-source communities is one you're far more likely actually to see in use, but it, too, is in a constant state of improvement and bug-fixing. There are a few other codecs, but they're all either still in active development, or they're the reference codec Libaom, which works but requires powerful processors to handle it at a decent speed.

Things are less rosy on the hardware side, as there are only a handful of processors and SoCs (system-on-a-chips) that support hardware decoding of AV1 video. YouTube for Android TV was updated with software support for AV1 a few months ago, but I've yet to come across an Android TV that actually can play anything in AV1, because not even the newest NVIDIA Shield TVs can support it with their older, less powerful processors. The only phone on the market to support AV1 decoding at the hardware level is the Oppo Reno 3 5G, which uses the MediaTek Dimensity 1000.

AT CES 2020, both LG and Samsung announced 8K TVs that are capable of supporting AV1, but for the rest of the TV market, it's still going to be years before most AV1 sees wide TV support. Gaming consoles aren't in a much better position.

So what does all of this mean for AV1 in the future?

While AV1 can do great things in the future, you probably won't be seeing much with it for a while. Netflix didn't start streaming any content in AV1 until February of this year, and they're only doing it on Android so far because both macOS and iOS lack AV1 support at the system level right now. And given that AV1 got no mention at Apple's developer conference this summer, I'd wager it'll be at least 2021 before we see support on any Apple products.

Since AV1 is royalty-free, it should see much more extensive support even before the hardware catches up — which should maybe be in about five years — as open-source projects continue to try and push AV1 codecs to be better on all sorts of platforms. And of course, you can expect the continued support and devotion of AOMedia's members like Google, Amazon, and Netflix, who are all keen to stop paying royalties for older video formats to MPEG-LA and its ilk.

It won't happen overnight, but AV1 is shaping up to be what no one could agree on a decade ago for HTML-5: a global internet standard for video.

Fans of Rick and Morty have a whole new show to check out from series co-creator Justin Roiland. The new animated sitcom Solar Opposites centers on a family of aliens who've been sent to find and conquer another world after their own planet is destroyed by an asteroid. Tagging along is Pupa, a comical, blob-like supercomputer whose ultimate goal is to rule the planet — if the aliens can fit into human society on earth long enough, that is.

Updated 11:06 AM ET: It looks like things at Hulu are back to normal. People on Twitter are reporting that the service is once again working for them, along with Down Detector reports decreasing considerably. Happy streaming!

If you've been trying to watch your favorite Hulu shows but haven't been able to, you aren't alone. According to Down Detector, issues with Hulu began around 4:50 AM ET on April 28 with issues continuing to persist hours later.

A quick look on Twitter also confirms the outage, with #HuluDown currently trending on the social network.

The app seems to be working fine on my Pixel 4, but it won't open at all on my iPhone 11 Pro. Down Detector notes that video streaming is the most reported issue people are having, with there being additional complaints about people not being able to log in and funk with the Hulu website.

It's currently unclear when things will return back to normal, but we'll keep an eye on things and update this post when everything's worked itself out.
