Decent car mounts are found aplenty, be it with or without charging capabilities integrated into them. The ones from Baseus are top-notch, with some of the best price-to-feature ratios one can find.

If your phone doesn't support wireless charging or you're just not into it all that much, a simple old-fashioned car mount is good enough for your vehicle. They're super affordable too, mostly priced below $15 to $20, depending on the features.

Basesus offers two cheap car mounts with magnetic heads, ditching those problematic arms and legs that car mounts usually have. I tested both of them, namely the new Baseus PrimeTrip C03 Magnetic Car Mount as well as the PrimeTrip C03s Magnetic Car Mount.

Wacky waving bendable car mounts

The two car mounts from Baseus have a lot in common. You get magnetic bases on both, they both latch onto your car's windshield or dashboard via a sticky 3M adhesive, and both mounts have malleable arms. Each mount comes with a sticky magnetic ring to go on the backside of your phone. Heck, even the price is the same — $30 for each one.

So what's the difference between the PrimeTrip C03 and the PrimeTrip C03s? For one, the C03 has a flat, fettuccine-like arm and a rotating base. This means you can bend and contort the arm as much as you like, and also choose to rotate it to whatever degree you prefer. The rotating base can be tightened to secure it in place.

On top of that, the square magnetic "head" tilts, so you can further adjust the angle at which your phone tilts toward you. This makes it incredibly easy to find the perfect viewing angle while seated in the driver's seat.

A two-pronged approach

Meanwhile, the PrimeTrip C03s Magnetic Car Mount has two spaghetti-like flexible arms that can bend into whatever shape you like. Each base has 3M adhesive, allowing you to stick it onto the dash or the windshield.

Since there are two arms on the C03s, it lacks a rotating base. This model also lacks the swiveling head, although it is magnetic in nature. However, the thinner arms make this mount a lot more flexible than the C03, so you can easily twist it into a tilted angle that matches your line of sight when sitting behind the wheel.

Traditional car mounts with adjustable clamps are plain awful. I never fail to struggle inserting my phone into those types of car mounts, which is why magnetic ones are a dream to use. There's no fussing about with clamp arms or feet; you simply plop your phone on and carry on with your business. There's a highly satisfying snap to it.

There's no denying the practical advantage of a magnetic car mount over a traditional one with clamps. I wish the Baseus PrimeTrip mounts didn't use 3M adhesive, but had suction cups instead. While 3M is a lot sturdier, it can't be removed once glued in place.

Both the Baseus PrimeTrip C03 and C03s Magnetic Car Mounts have their uses. If I had to choose between the C03 and C03s, I'd go for the PrimeTrip C03 for the rotating base and tilting head.

And while both the magnetic car mounts are reasonably priced, I'd personally wait for the next Prime Day event or Black Friday to buy them for $25 or under. After all, you can get the ESR Qi2 15W wireless car charger for about $32, and that works as a magnetic car mount but has the additional wireless charging feature to increase the value prospect.

If you have a newer vehicle, there's a good chance it lets you run Android Auto wirelessly. Plenty of others on the road don't offer that kind of luxury, and frankly, some aren't even that old. This was always the premise behind AAWireless as an adapter to bridge that gap. The AAWireless Two smooths out the rougher edges of the original and makes it easier to set up and use.

The main focus remains the same, which is to enable you to run wireless Android Auto where it's not possible. It's just that you can also share the connectivity with other drivers or passengers along the way.

AAWireless Two: Price and availability

AAWireless Two first launched in October 2024 and, unlike its predecessor, didn't come with a crowdfunding campaign. The best places to find it are on Amazon and its own website, where it sells for $65. The only catch is availability, which fluctuates based on inventory from the European manufacturer. That's cheaper than the original AAWireless, which has basically been retired.

AAWireless Two: What's good

The most obvious difference in this second iteration is that it's about half the size of the previous model. That puts it more in line with what other brands, especially those based in China, are bringing to market. These types of dongles and adapters keep getting smaller.

As they slim down in size, they're becoming easier to set up and manage. Mind you, the "manage" part is very relative because most others are simple "set it and forget it" types. Not so with the AAWireless Two, which encourages usability and customization however it can provide it.

Much of that comes from the button on the device, whose main function is to switch between paired phones or place the connection on "standby."

AAWireless even lets you map the buttons within the limited parameters available. The point is that it makes it significantly easier to pair multiple devices and swap between them while on the road. Not only should it make road trips or commutes simpler, but it also allows drivers sharing the same car to utilize the wireless Android Auto connection. The one catch here is anyone connecting to this must use an Android phone. There's no Apple CarPlay here (except an AAWireless Two Plus model supporting it is coming in 2025).

The LED ring light is highly visible and easy to interpret, with solid blue confirming a phone is connected and running Android Auto. A single or double-click can switch over to another phone — a process that's impressively quick.

I liked it all the more because the original AAWireless came with inconsistent connectivity, particularly on ignition. That smoothed over with subsequent firmware updates, but this sequel is already off to a good start. From the initial setup to connection stability, the Two delivers.

It's also pretty seamless to pair a second phone. All I had to do was press and hold the button until it flashed purple (indicating pairing mode) and then pair the second phone via the Bluetooth settings. Once done, the app lets you choose which device to prioritize first every time, or you can opt to have it first go to whichever phone it last connected with.

The process is sturdy throughout, and I found just pressing the button on the adapter was good enough to switch phones when necessary. It also proves super convenient with phone calls in case your partner or passenger needs to make a call and wants to use the car stereo as a speaker.

The app's settings include a slew of extra features and controls, most of which you probably won't even need to consider.

One is "Audio stutter fix," a setting you'll want to toggle on if you encounter audio issues at any time while using the AAWireless Two. That said, Android Auto is supposed to set the buffer for audio playback to ensure it keeps playing without fail. If there's a problem, setting it to "Unlimited" should solve it.

AAWireless also brings back Passthrough as a means to play around with defaults, like adjusting the DPI (dots per inch) displayed and more. There are several other options in the settings in the app, but the disclaimer notes to "please make sure you know what you're doing" before trying them.

AAWireless Two: What's not good

The first few times, the AAWireless Two connects took longer than usual. The delay eventually corrects itself as things are set up but it is a bit jarring if you're used to more immediate access to Android Auto like you get with a wired connection.

Naturally, a wired connection means you're also charging your phone at the same time. If your car has a wireless charging pad, you can take advantage of that anytime. It's still a good idea to keep charging cables inside to charge the device whenever you need them.

Make sure to keep a USB-C-to-USB-C cable handy in case your car doesn't have USB-A ports. The included cable here is only a short USB-C-to-USB-A. There's also no adhesive pad included to keep the adapter upright on the dash — less of an issue with the previous one but more important here because of the phone-switching feature.

Then there's general availability. Unlike other similar adapters, the AAWireless Two is manufactured in Europe, so inventory tends to come in waves, meaning you'll have to catch one to get your hands on this device.

AAWireless Two: Competition

It's hard to look at the AAWireless Two and not conclude it's the best of the bunch right now. Even more so given its predecessor occupied that spot before. Still, there are other dongles and devices that can run wireless Android Auto. The Motorola MA1 is recognizable by the name, but it's since been outshone by others.

The Carsifi is a good example; only app updates are like UFO sightings, and they're never around. But at least it lets you pair more than one phone. Carlinkit 5.0 is solid except for the clunky firmware update process and poorly written manual. It does the job if you only care to go wireless and never really interact with it thereafter.

AAWireless Two: Should you buy it?

You should buy this if...

• You want wireless Android Auto in a vehicle with no other option but wired Android Auto
• You share your car with at least one other Android user
• You want app support for tweaks and troubleshooting

You shouldn't buy this if...

• You are fine with plugging in to run Android Auto
• You don't have a wireless charger
• You use iPhone

Whether you're new to going wireless or have done it many times running Android Auto, what's not to like about it? I've used the word "liberating" before in the same context, and it feels just like that with the AAWireless Two.

Possibly more so because of how it seamlessly involves another user without any snags. In that sense, going wireless is already a win, and switching that privilege over to another is a win-win.

Shopping around for a newer vehicle — especially one that comes with Android Auto — usually means you get to enjoy running it wirelessly. There are still a lot of vehicles without that luxury, which is why there's been a steady stream of adapters and dongles to bridge the gap.

Carlinkit is one such brand that's been doing it for a while. Hence, the Carlinkit 5.0 (2air) is a successor to previous models, each one designed to be simpler and smoother than the last.

Plugging this in the first time means you should be up and running every time you turn on the ignition thereafter. Is that how it turns out? It only takes a few trips to find out.

Cutting the cord

The Carlinkit 5.0's simplicity is obvious once you unbox it. It's just the adapter itself with two cables, one USB-C-to-USB-C and one USB-C-to-USB-A, ensuring you can connect to your car regardless of which USB port it has. You could be a little confused since the adapter also has both USB-C and USB-A ports, except the latter is meant for updating the device. More on that later.

Once you first bring it into your vehicle, you only need to plug it in after turning on the ignition. Built-in LEDs behind the Carlinkit logo on the unit indicate status, with pink showing up and flashing blue indicating the adapter has power. It then turns solid pink during the setup phase.

The included manual has instructions for setting up Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, though both generally follow the same type of sequence. The Carlinkit unit should appear in your phone's Bluetooth menu (as "AutoKit" or something similar). Select it to start the pairing process and it will work in the background to establish the connection.

It flashes blue as it works to do so but you'll only know that pairing was successful when you see Android Auto pop up on your infotainment screen. If you've set up Android Auto from your phone before — even if you used another dongle/adapter like this — you shouldn't have to go through the introductory setup. It literally picks up where you left off the last time you connected.

Subsequent connections usually see the platform appear on your vehicle screen in about 10 seconds, though I've found that isn't a hard and fast rule with this device. There were times when it took mere seconds to do it, and others where it seemed to struggle a few times before finally making it happen.

Driving solo and cable-free

More often than not, Carlinkit 5.0 does its singular job well. You get in the car, start it up, and eventually carry on with whatever content you were listening to before you got in. If you've never experienced wireless Android Auto for yourself, the liberating feeling is immensely satisfying, even more so because you don't lose the platform's integration while also letting you wirelessly charge your phone if you're using a dock supporting the feature.

Whether streaming music, making phone calls, getting a route in Waze, or talking to Google Assistant, this adapter doesn't make any of those features feel difficult. Once it connects, it stays connected. On top of that, it remains steady in that it's not all that buggy, either.

The problem is when it doesn't necessarily connect properly, it becomes obvious. There may be false starts or intermittent cutouts, the latter of which I attribute to bad reception because it's happened to numerous wireless Android Auto dongles I've tested.

There are also some other caveats along the way that can prove challenging. If you share the vehicle with a spouse or partner, they may run into trouble trying to connect to the device, and Carlinkit's poor documentation and instructions don't really add a lot of confidence. That can happen whether they're using Android Auto or CarPlay.

Carlinkit 5.0 doesn't offer a seamless way to switch users the way certain others do, like Carsifi or AAWireless, for instance. It's not that you can't, but to do it, the one who first connects has to disconnect the Bluetooth connection and let the other connect in order to make it work. It's clunky and not exactly ideal.

You also have the benefit of firmware updates to keep the adapter current, albeit without a clearer path to install them. I'm nitpicking here, but I'm doing so because I can see where users who aren't as savvy with these types of devices might feel lost. There is no Carlinkit app on the Play Store, forcing you to run through a process of connecting to the device's Wi-Fi signal and typing in an IP address (noted in the manual) in your phone browser to find and install the update. It's worth doing because updates do come out, but it won't feel smooth.

Simply getting the job done

The Carlinkit 5.0 (2air) has a regular price of $90 but you'll often find it selling for less online. At its discounted price, it's hard to argue with the role it plays, particularly if your needs and expectations are fairly basic. When you just want to cut the cord and go wireless running Android Auto, this gizmo can cover that well.

The rest of the experience is partly hindered by the confusing manual. Carlinkit would establish some trust with consumers if it suggested updating the firmware as one of the first moves to make upon setting it up. An app would then make the update process far smoother than it currently is. Put those things in place, and there's very little to find fault with on this thing.

There is something liberating about simply getting into your car, turning it on, and having Android Auto launch right after. Even more so when you don't have to plug the phone into any of the vehicle's USB ports to make it happen. 

Wireless adapters continue to usher in a convenient way to take the cable out of the equation and leave your phone free. Carsifi does this while adding a unique element in enabling drivers to share the connection with others in the vehicle. However, uncertainty over app and product support cast a shadow over an otherwise effective device.

Carsifi first started out as a crowdfunded device before it became available to anyone in the U.S., Canada, and Australia in 2022. The initial $110 price has since dropped to around $90, making it more competitive against other Android Auto adapters like the Motorola MA1. The one catch is that the device seems to only be available through Carsifi's website.

Easy setup, seconds to wireless Android Auto

Wireless Android Auto adapters come in different types, mostly aiming to perform one task, which is to ensure a stable wireless connection between an Android phone and a vehicle infotainment system. I've tested several of them, and Carsifi is among the smallest adapters I've seen thus far. Smaller in length and height than a credit card (though naturally thicker), its lightweight build and diminutive frame mean it won't feel cumbersome in the car.

Carsifi also includes two short cables, one with a USB-C port and the other with USB-A, thereby covering vehicles that might have one or the other. There's also a two-sided 3M adhesive strip in the box to mount it on the dash, or anywhere you prefer in the car within reach. It's also easy enough to use your own longer cable if you prefer something else for placement. In my case, I used the adhesive from the Motorola MA1, which I thought might hold the Carsifi better (it didn't), but ultimately tucked it away in a basin in front of the shifter.

Setting up the Carsifi was one of the easiest processes I've experienced thus far. Plug the device into your vehicle's USB port, and it goes into pairing mode right away. Simply pairing it with an Android phone is enough to get it up and running, and the Android Auto interface appears onscreen within 30 seconds. 

Other adapters or dongles sometimes require extra steps, be it setting up a Wi-Fi Direct connection or in some cases, using a dedicated app to establish everything. Carsifi is as plug-and-play as it gets, which is great for those looking for something less technical. The included instructions are barebones, so it is best to check out the full support page to learn more about what it can do.

Unfortunately, there is so much that works well with Carsifi that the app situation just feels downright confusing. The brand hasn't updated its Android app to work with Android 13 — much less Android 14. I reached out to the media relations staff and didn't get a response about software support, so I went to tech support, who told me they weren't updating it because of "Play Store rules," whatever that means. Instead, they suggested downloading an APK file of the previous app, which is easy enough to download and install but not a practical solution.

Mind you, the app doesn't do much anyway, and you don't need it to set up the device because settings are stored on the Carsifi itself rather than your phone. The problem is it's the only method available to update the firmware. Again, this is not something you see with every adapter, including the Motorola MA1, so it would just be more convenient for everyone to download an app from the Play Store and take it from there.

Sharing the connection with others

It's possible to pair the Carsifi with other phones as well, allowing a passenger to run their Android Auto connection instead. While this might not seem useful at first glance, I think it makes a lot of sense because it all works wirelessly.

Double-click the Carsifi button, and it switches over to the other phone, eventually displaying that user's Android Auto setup. In cases where a passenger wants to listen to their music, contact people, or navigate maps, it makes things much easier. For example, if you, as the driver, have a Spotify account, but the passenger is on Apple Music, Tidal, or YouTube Music, switching phones negates any cumbersome account changes on the road.

You have to be careful with double-clicking because a single click pauses Android Auto, a feature that I still can't find much use for. Also, you have to exercise some patience because it can take a good 10 seconds before the adapter switches to the other phone, leaving a brief period of silence during which the "Is it working?" questions start to arise. After a while, though, you recognize these nuances, and it becomes old hat.

Also, bear in mind that the adapter remembers the last phone it connected to, so there is no "master" device here. That's why you might want to double-click the button in case Android Auto doesn't appear for you or you forgot which phone might have been the last one.

The good news is that Carsifi works just fine in both factory and aftermarket systems. My Pioneer aftermarket head unit has no issues at all, and even better, steering wheel controls work like a charm, which doesn't always happen with all adapters.

Reliable, yet with tough competition

The clunky support behind the product gives me pause. On the plus side, tech support was highly responsive, so if you have issues, someone should get back to you, but I can't be absolutely sure it will be the same for everyone, given the strange refusal to update the app.

That said, there are plenty of Android Auto dongles and adapters out there, many of which create wireless connectivity under similar conditions. Certain nuances or functional points put some distance between them, like how AAWireless has a dedicated app and technical features that others don't. The Motorola MA1 comes from a recognizable brand, though it doesn't feel as seamless to me. Plus, it may have a successor model coming sometime this year.

Carlinkit and Ottocast are two others that continue to produce Android Auto adapters, though make sure to read any fine print about incompatibilities. They may not work with certain automotive brands or aftermarket head units. Carsifi wades through a lot of that in ways that make it appealing as a plug-and-play product.

Ultimately, once you go wireless with Android Auto, it's hard to go back. Even more so if you have a wireless charger in the car. Carsifi accomplishes the key task of making the transition feel simple and painless, establishing a connection in little time, and ensuring it stays that way. Out of all the adapters I've tested, this one felt more stable than the others.

As I noted, the weird lack of support at the app level is hard to understand, and it's still only available through direct sale from Carsifi, so not something you will readily find from other online retailers. For the price, though, you do get something that works as advertised, taking away the kind of frustration you don't want to deal with on the road.

Google Assistant Routines are all about convenience because they can automate a series of actions with just one command. They're designed to help ease the process in which you want to either know or do something without having to tap through menus or different apps to get there.

You can apply all of that to Android Auto, where you can arguably enjoy the convenience even more while keeping your eyes on the road. Here's how you can set up specific routines for your drive.

How to set up new Google Assistant Routines in Android Auto

If you're new to Google Assistant Routines, they're easy to find and not hard to learn. You can get started by setting them up on your Android phone before you even step back in the car and drive off. This method works best with very simple commands, like opening a garage door or lights at home.

1. Open the Settings app and head straight to Connected devices and then Connected preferences.

2. Another way is to go to Settings and just type in "Auto" into the search bar, where you will see Android Auto appear below.

3. In the Android Auto settings, tap Customize Launcher.

4. Tap Add shortcut to the launcher and then Call a contact or An Assistant action.

5. For contacts, you just need to pick anyone in your contact list. For an Assistant action, type in a phrase to kick off the routine in the Assistant command.

6. Then type in the name you want the icon to have in Launcher icon label.

7. Once done, it will automatically add the completed shortcut to the app launcher. Next time you connect to it in your vehicle, it will appear in the app grid.

Find all the shortcuts you want

You can repeat this process however much you want and then rearrange the icons on your Android Auto app grid through the Customize Launcher section in the settings. That way, if you want certain ones to appear up top, they can always be easy to find.

Routines are not just convenient, but also expedient in that they negate having to verbally issue those commands, especially when you need to be quiet in the car or use a Routine while on a call.

It took just under a decade, but Android Auto and CarPlay are so much easier to spot in vehicles today, integrating factory infotainment systems further with smartphones. Like an endless Android vs. iOS debate, pitting these two platforms against each other is inevitable when thinking of how to use a phone in the car. They're definitely more refined than they were when they respectively debuted, which makes this comparison all the more intriguing.

Android Auto vs. Apple CarPlay: What can they do?

Both Android Auto and CarPlay operate as projection platforms, meaning they run off the phone over to the vehicle's head unit to display the interface you see. That's why if you don't have a certain app installed on your phone, you won't see it appear on the infotainment screen. 

This matters because overall usability largely depends on what you want to do while driving. With safety in mind, Google and Apple regulate which apps can work with the proviso that they don't break laws and that drivers aren't distracted. In those respects, both companies run a pretty tight ship that way, though Android's more porous software architecture means there are workarounds to skirt the rules. 

Both tend to prioritize three key apps and functions: audio, navigation, and messaging. Most of what's available to download falls under those silos, with plenty of crossovers between them as well. Many of the third-party apps available on Android Auto are also readily available on CarPlay. Think of Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, Pandora, Tidal, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Pocket Casts, Viber, and many more. 

Even some apps owned by either Google or Apple can run cross-platform. Apple Music, YouTube Music, Google Maps, and Waze come to mind. The main exceptions are with messaging, where iMessage's incompatibility with Android extends to Android Auto, too. The same applies to Google's own Messages app, which uses RCS, a communications standard incompatible with iMessage. 

Despite some of those incompatibilities, the conveniences are only getting better. Integration between voice assistants, like Google Assistant and Siri, and third-party apps is getting better with each major update to make hands-free control more seamless. It's never been easier to request a song or playlist the same way you would a destination or point of interest on a mapping app.

Phone calls don't require touching anything, with functional steering wheel controls that not only let you tell Google Assistant or Siri what you want, but also who to call. They will indicate when someone is calling, even naming names if they're on your contact list. Add in the ability to verbally compose outbound messages or read aloud the incoming ones, and communicating behind the wheel feels more intuitive. There's still room for improvement with either platform, but it is fair to say they've come along nicely.

Android Auto vs. Apple CarPlay: How do they differ?

One of the biggest advantages of having both Android Auto and CarPlay run off phones is you don't have to reconfigure things from vehicle to vehicle. In fact, you could use either one in a friend's vehicle or a rental car, assuming they support them. 

When it first launched, Android Auto's card-based layout looked radically different from CarPlay's app grid. The former has since gone over to a grid, but both have also embraced multitasking home screens that can show up to three apps at once. These also include shortcuts to the last used apps for navigation, music, and messaging. You can even quickly play/pause or skip/repeat a track from an open card on the home screen. The similarities here are such that neither platform really has an edge over the other. All the pertinent information is easy to see, which is the point.

Google does have an edge, however, when it comes to maps. Not only is it more intuitive to search for a destination, but Google Maps and Waze are more heavily integrated. Since they're also considerably more reliable than Apple Maps, Android Auto holds serve in that regard. On top of that, simply scrolling or pinching on a map onscreen feels more intuitive compared to CarPlay. 

That leads to how each voice assistant integrates. Siri has come a long way in knowing about the third-party apps on a connected iPhone, where it's now simple just to launch them by voice and tell it what you want. You could ask for turn-by-turn directions in Google Maps or Waze, as well as request tunes from Spotify or YouTube Music. Where things differ is in Google Assistant's ability to better understand speech and intent, as well as the fact you can see what you're saying transcribed in real-time. It's a great way to ensure your messages aren't rife with typos.

You then have to consider an advantage CarPlay might have when it comes to messaging access. If most of your family and friends are rocking iPhones, and you feel like the lone Android user, that feeling might sometimes extend to the car. 

Suppose you're traveling and using a local eSIM for data, but steering clear of roaming for calls and SMS messages. Wi-Fi calling can help with calls when connected to an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, but SMS messages could trigger roaming charges. The advantage of iMessage is that it uses data, so using it in the car to communicate with other iOS users won't incur any charges because it would fall under the eSIM data package. 

This is not so when messaging an Android user, bringing up that dreaded "green bubble" and potential charge on your next phone bill. The workaround would be to use data-only apps like WhatsApp or Telegram that are available on both platforms. 

Android Auto vs. Apple CarPlay: What else stands out?

Sometimes, the little things matter. Android Auto's notification system is more discreet by way of a banner that appears up top. It can show who a message is from but not necessarily display what it says. This is great if you want to maintain some discretion on the road with passengers in tow. It's also easier to dismiss or mute specific notifications so that a group chat may come through on WhatsApp while all of Telegram is muted, for instance. In contrast, CarPlay posts notifications at the bottom, which can be intrusive if the overlay covers something else that's important, like turn-by-turn directions or audio playback controls. 

Android Auto has more third-party apps, but some are regional in focus, so the quantity doesn't tell the full story. Phone compatibility is also broad enough at this point that an overwhelming majority of Android and iOS devices held in people's hands will be able to run either platform. 

You can use Android Auto or CarPlay wirelessly with your phone so long as the factory or aftermarket head unit supports it. If not, you can always try an adapter or dongle to bridge the connection instead and unshackle your phone anyway. CarPlay tends to be more reliable with any wireless setup; it doesn't drop out, and random hiccups are fewer in number, generally speaking.

Android Auto vs. Apple CarPlay: Which should you drive with?

This is a tough call because of how close Android Auto and CarPlay now look and function. Google has come a long way in closing the gap in both respects, whereas Apple has refined CarPlay to open the gates for better third-party integration, especially with Siri. Your decision may have already been settled by the very phone you're using, but if you're on the fence, these two platforms are extensions of both and part of the experience in using Android or iOS.

Distracted driving is one of the most dangerous things you can do while behind the wheel. It puts you and everyone else on the road at risk, and while it should go without saying, it is obviously something we don't condone.

That said, there are times when you need to stay connected, even when in your car. Whether you're following turn-by-turn navigation, making a hands-free phone call, or controlling your music on a long road trip, doing it all with your device is a must.

That's why Google created Android Auto in the first place — software that's available on your phone to give you a way to do all of the things mentioned above in your car as safely as possible.

Android Auto: Availability

Android Auto launched in March 2015 as a special Android interface designed for use in your car. Google removed the ability to run Android Auto directly on your phone's display, so you will need to either run it on a supported car's infotainment system or have a compatible aftermarket head unit installed.

So long as you have an Android phone running version 8.0 or later, you just need the Android Auto app to get things started. If your phone is running Android 10 or later, Android Auto is already built right into your phone and doesn't need to be downloaded.

Android Auto: How it works

Android Auto is a projection platform in that it runs from your phone to display on a compatible infotainment head unit screen. That way, Google can update the platform through the Android Auto app, while developers can do the same with their apps when they run on the platform.

Five core functions make up Android Auto: turn-by-turn navigation, phone call support, audio playback, messaging, and voice assistance. They are, by far, the handful of features you're most likely going to use while you drive, and make up the lion's share of the third-party apps you would be able to access.

That being said, the Google Play Store doesn't run on Android Auto, so you don't browse through apps and download from your car's screen. You do it from your phone — basically, if the app is on your phone and it works with Android Auto, it should appear onscreen.

When everything is in place, running Android Auto is pretty simple. When you first connect to the car's infotainment system or head unit, prompts usually appear on both the phone and head unit screens indicating a successful connection. It's a more seamless connection now, be it wired or wireless, but with older Android phones running anything before Android 10, you may need to open the Android app on your phone first, then plug in a USB cable to your vehicle's main USB port to start Android Auto on your car's display.

That's not always necessary on newer vehicles, including head units from JVC, Kentwood, and Pioneer, which are all increasingly supporting wireless connectivity. Still, if that's not an option, you can always plug in through a wired setup.

Android Auto: Going the wireless route

Fear not if you're driving a vehicle that doesn't offer wireless Android Auto because you have ways to enable it using a dongle or adapter to bridge the connection. Plug in the dongle or adapter to your vehicle's USB port, set it up, and your phone connects to the dongle/adapter wirelessly, negating the need to plug it in directly.

These types of devices are growing in number, some of which are worth paying for because of how reliable they can be. A few of the standouts include the AAWireless Two, Motorola MA1, Carsifi, and Carlinkit 5.0. If your car doesn't have Android Auto at all, you could bring it in entirely with something using its own built-in display, like the Car and Driver Intellidash+, in lieu of installing an aftermarket head unit.

Android Auto: Using the apps

Android Auto has gone through some visual changes over time, so once you get it up and running, you'll notice the home screen has a sectioned design with up to three open apps visible. You also have the option to change the wallpaper that appears on the interface, if you like. Google first revamped it to better control the entire UI using your car's physical knobs/buttons if you never want to (or can't) use its touchscreen.

It last gave the UI a facelift in 2022 with its "Coolwalk" redesign, and it's been the best way to use Android Auto because of how it improves multitasking to complement the app drawer. Not only do you see all of your available apps in one place, but you also quickly get to the apps you use most on the home screen.

It can display the last three apps you opened, along with a short app launcher that appears either below or beside the main screen. Tap on any of the three main screens to go full screen, or tap on the bottom left icon to switch to full screen or the app grid. Notifications, like messages or calls (among others), appear from the top of the screen when they come in, letting you tap to listen or accept/reject as you wish.

For the most part, the apps don't come with a steep learning curve, though the Android Auto versions don't always offer all the same features the phone ones do. For example, you would have to apply most settings for an app on your phone since Google's restrictions force developers to keep things simple.

A good example of that is the way Google Maps and Waze run on the platform where most of the mapping and driving settings are in the phone app. You can easily look up a destination on the car's screen, but you won't be able to launch Waze on your phone while Android Auto is running, though you can with Maps after Google reversed the restriction. More elaborate settings, however, are found in the phone app. Most other apps let you make changes as you drive. That's great for passengers who can browse through music streaming apps to find something to play but not as ideal if you're trying to do it behind the wheel.

Messaging apps have their own limits. Google Assistant will read incoming messages aloud if you choose to hear them, and you can either respond through voice-to-text or send an audio recording. Some apps let you use automatic canned responses instead. One way to automate things is to create Routines that simplify features and commands with a single tap.

Over the years, Google's done a great job at making sure Android Auto is backed by support for just about every major app you could want in the car.

Android Auto: Talking to Google Assistant

There are a few ways to quickly and easily access Google Assistant: you can tap the microphone button onscreen, use the microphone button on your car's steering wheel, or just say "Hey Google," or "OK Google," if it's always listening. Some automakers will prioritize their own voice assistants, requiring you to long press the steering wheel voice button to get Google Assistant to listen.

You can use the Assistant for just about anything, like asking about the weather, sending a text, playing a specific song, and more. You could ask it for the closest gas stations, electric chargers, or where there might be a good place to grab a bite nearby.

The Assistant proves incredibly useful outside of Android Auto, yet feels especially at home in a setting where you want to keep your hands on the wheel. Whether you tap the microphone icon or just say "Hey Google" for truly hands-free access, it's an essential addition that makes the Android Auto experience that much better and safer.

As Google continues to migrate Assistant to its Gemini AI platform, the former's days are probably numbered on Android Auto. Until it completes that rollout with Android 14 (at the earliest), here are some examples of phrases that work on the platform:

Android Auto: On your phone (sort of)

Google previously offered multiple ways to run Android Auto directly on your phone, where the car-friendly UI was ready to use right then and there. The company pulled the plug on that after releasing a separate app on Google Play called Android Auto for Phone Screens. It essentially emulated the original Android Auto app for previous versions and was made as a stop-gap for devices on Android 10 and 11 until Google could launch its Google Assistant Driving Mode integration.

It ultimately phased out the Phone Screens app with Android 12 when Driving Mode was supposedly ready, only to then axe the dashboard portion of that applet and just integrate it into Google Maps instead. It then removed Driving Mode altogether from Assistant in 2024, leaving nothing substantial to take its place.

It's not clear if the onset of Gemini is going to change that, as vague references to AI-driven and multitasking features suggest Google might take another crack at this at some point going forward.

For now, you can access a pared-down "driving mode" by way of Google Maps. By default, it kicks in once you start navigation to a destination, changing the interface to enable access to music, calls, and voice commands.

If you're not sure that it's on, take these steps:

1. Open Google Maps, and tap your profile picture in the upper right corner.
2. Tap Settings.
3. Scroll down and tap Navigation.
4. Look for Google Assistant settings and confirm When navigating in Google Maps is on.
5. Look through the other settings and see if any others are of interest to toggle on or off.

Android Auto: Android Auto vs. Android Automotive

If you haven't heard (or maybe you have), there is a different platform called Android Automotive. This is a wholly separate platform that runs natively within select vehicles, meaning it's installed in the car's infotainment system and doesn't really need your phone to run anything.

The apps that run on it require you to sign in directly through the car's own head unit. For instance, you sign in to your Spotify account, and your profile appears there — again, without your phone being part of the equation. The only time it might be in that case is if you need to use your phone's data to stream content and route phone calls.

Another key distinction is Automotive merges the infotainment features with the vehicle's own functions, meaning you use the platform to control cabin climate, diagnostics, onboard cameras, and other settings for the vehicle. That integration allows automakers to give the interface their own skin or overlay, not unlike how Android looks different on phones and tablets depending on the manufacturer.

It's still not clear if Google will ultimately replace Android Auto with Android Automotive since the two still work in tandem together. The platform looks to be a big part of Google's plans for the automotive space, though Android Auto remains the most ubiquitous choice for Android users.

Android Auto: Take it for a drive

It's hard to gauge what Google truly thinks about Android Auto at this point. Is it here to stay long-term or is it just a stepping stone to a more integrated platform residing in vehicles themselves? It may be both so long as it makes sense to offer them. While it's obvious the ongoing focus will be tighter integration with select automakers, Android Auto is still the most ubiquitous and accessible right now.

It's not without its kinks, of course. It can be buggy, doing weird things like showing music playing without any sound coming out of the speakers, phone calls where neither side can hear anything, or Google Assistant completely misinterpreting what you actually said. I've certainly had some head-scratching moments with the platform since I first used it in 2015, but when I look at what the alternatives were like over those years for Android phones, nothing else really stood out.

For most Android users, it remains the safest option to work with a vehicle's car stereo. Far from abandoning it, Google appears committed to at least making it better going forward, so time will tell what's next for Android Auto.

• Waymo has announced its new partnership with Uber.
• The partnership will bring Waymo's self-driving cars to Uber's ride-hailing and delivery services through the main app and Uber Eats.
• Tests will begin later this year in Phoenix with a limited number of cars.

Waymo is showing more of its confidence with a new partnership aimed at bringing its autonomous cars to more riders.

The Alphabet-owned company announced today via a press release that it has partnered with popular ride-hailing service Uber. Waymo's "multi-year strategic partnership" with Uber will soon begin in Phoenix, Arizona as the partnership picks up traction. Not only will Waymo's self-driving cars be a part of Uber's ride-hailing service, but users can also use one of these cars for deliveries through Uber Eats.

Given the announcement today, the Waymo-Uber debut won't take place in Phoenix until later this year. Waymo states a "set number of Waymo vehicles" will be involved in the beginning. So, vehicles paired alongside Uber's network probably won't be as widespread until both sides iron out any potential problems as the partnered service opens publically.

Users will retain the ability to use the Waymo One app on their Android phone or iOS device to call a car, as well, throughout the new partnership.

"We’re excited to offer another way for people to experience the enjoyable and life-saving benefits of full autonomy," says Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Waymo. "Uber has long been a leader in human-operated ridesharing, and the pairing of our pioneering technology and all-electric fleet with their customer network provides Waymo with an opportunity to reach even more people."

Waymo expanded testing for its driverless cars to the downtown Phoenix area back in August 2022. San Francisco was another city the company's self-driving cars were featured, but that was limited to employee rides only. Waymo's Phoenix testing saw those who signed up for its "Trusted Testers" program the year prior getting a chance to see what the autonomous vehicles were about on a more public (but still limited) scale.

One key note about its Phoenix test is that these cars were completely driverless — Waymo conducted these tests without the existence of a safety driver, which would usually be present in case something went wrong with the car. This will most likely continue as the company has seemingly become more confident in its vehicles' ability to navigate traffic safely.

Additionally, this isn't the first time Waymo and Uber have partnered up together. Before the summer got underway in June 2022, Waymo Via partnered with Uber Freight which connected the former's autonomous trucking solution with the latter's platform. Shippers could utilize Waymo's Driver technology and decide to pair it with Uber Freight for streamlining supply chains and ensuring shippers can get their products where they need to go quickly across Uber's shipping network.

A new version of AAWireless made in Europe is finally available in the US. The Dutch producer of AAWireless, a wireless Android Auto adapter, previously announced it was moving its entire production from China to Europe. The aim of the move was primarily to improve the quality of the product. Despite this shift, the price of the popular Android Auto dongle remains unchanged and still proves cheaper than most of its competitors. 

AAWireless more popular than ever

While improving the quality of the product was the main goal, moving production to Europe also helps the company boost production to meet demand. “After we ran out of stock on Black Friday last year, we were relieved to learn our European partner could easily scale up production”, co-founder Emil Borconi-Szedressy explains. 

100% plastic-free packaging

The shift to European production also comes with some environmental advantages. All European-made devices will ship and travel in eco-friendly, recyclable packaging made entirely without plastic. Borconi-Szedressi explains, “moving our production perfectly aligned with our wish to get rid of plastic packaging material.”

AAWireless still core product

AAWireless has come a long way since the first prototype was released in 2019, with the company dramatically increasing the device’s capabilities over time and launching a more advanced version of the free companion app. Despite moving production, the core of what AAWireless does hasn’t been changed. It continues providing a fast and easy way to connect wirelessly to Android Auto.

Last June, AAWireless completed a 1.5-year-long Indiegogo campaign. Moving beyond crowdfunding, the company set up a brand new webshop and has seen the popularity of its Amazon listing rise. The Dutch company also expanded its distribution network in the US, Europe, and Asia. With hundreds of thousands of units delivered, AAWireless managed to bring wireless Android Auto experiences to the masses in a budget-friendly way, giving an instant upgrade to older infotainment systems. 

What is Android Auto?

Android Auto is a simpler and safer way to use your phone in the car. It allows you to control your Android phone or tablet from your car’s built-in display. You can navigate via Google Maps, receive live traffic updates via Waze, stream music via Spotify or send Whatsapp messages by using Google Assistant — all on your car screen.

What is AAWireless?

AAWireless is a plug & play device that makes the Android Auto connection between your phone or tablet and car’s infotainment system wireless. It still provides the same Android Auto features you’d get from a wired connection but without the hassle of needing to plug your device in. For Amazon, the Echo Auto is a gateway to plug Alexa into vehicles, bringing its voice assistant into one of the spaces people spend the most time in outside the home. While only a generation apart, these two bear no physical resemblance, and their respective features and functions also draw clear distinctions.

Amazon Echo Auto (Gen 1) vs. Echo Auto (Gen 2): How are they different?

At first glance, the most obvious difference is in their respective designs. The first-generation model presented a flatter, pad-style build more consistent with Amazon's Echo product line at the time it came out in 2018. Four years later, the second-generation model followed a similar path, given the fabric cover that so strongly resembles the current Echo product lineup.

Cutting down the Gen 2 model for size also opens up more options in where to put it. For example, both models can work with an attachment to latch onto an air vent, only the lighter weight and smaller frame of the Gen 2 makes it considerably more stable once you put it there compared to its predecessor. Amazon sells the vent mount separately or as part of a bundle, so while there is one in the original, you won't get it in the box with the newer one.

Alternatively, you can stick the included adhesive onto the dash and attach either unit to the other side. You have to find a spot that isn't made of soft plastic, leather, or fabric to make it stick properly, but there's no question the adhesive coming with the Gen 2 is stickier. The cables and connections don't differ as much except the Gen 2's cable doesn't detach. Each of them comes with a 12V socket adapter for power, plus a 3.5mm cable to plug into the vehicle's Aux-In port for audio playback to run through the car stereo.

The Echo Auto Gen 1 has an eight-microphone array whereas the Gen 2 has five. That would indicate a major flaw in the newer model, but that's actually not the case because the two capture voices well, even with typical road noise and windows down. Amazon claims its own improved algorithms fill in for the fewer mics in the Gen 2, but it's hard to know exactly how they work.

Both have the same mute and Alexa activation buttons, so nothing changes there between them. Hands-free access also runs through the Bluetooth connection enabled between the device and your Android phone. You need to run the Alexa app to set it up and ensure the integration works at all times.

Amazon Echo Auto (Gen 1) vs. Echo Auto (Gen 2): How do they work?

The main purpose for having either device is to access Alexa hands-free in the car. Either Echo Auto model does that, letting you do several things while driving. That could include controlling smart home devices, making calls, texting, looking up places of interest, or playing music on demand. 

Regardless of which model is in the car, you need the Alexa app on your Android phone to not only set up the device but also facilitate when it can do. That process is no different with either one, only performance and functionality could change due to improvements Amazon made.

The Echo Auto Gen 2 not only responds faster, it also offers better call quality when communicating with others using Echo speakers at home. The mics do a better job interpreting voices and accents than the previous model did, which can save a lot of time and effort if it gets things right more often.

There are two other distinctions between them that stand out. While connected, the Alexa app has an option for Roadside Assistance, which can be helpful if you've got car trouble in an area you're not familiar with. The other is that it comes with a fast car charger to plug in a phone via USB-C. The 12V charger on the original Echo Auto charges at a slower rate.

Amazon Echo Auto (Gen 1) vs. Echo Auto (Gen 2): Driving it around

The Echo Auto fits best with vehicles lacking modern infotainment systems. If you're already running Android Auto, you may not need either one of these unless you're heavily invested in the Alexa and Echo ecosystem. Android Auto gives you Google Assistant hands-free, and it integrates with messaging apps, like WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram, which the Alexa app doesn't.

You could use both an Echo Auto and Android Auto together, though you might only do that if you really need access to Alexa in the car. If that's you, the Echo Auto Gen 2 is the better way to go for its efficiency and ancillary features. You do have to pay extra for the vent mount, but it's worth the money for the versatility in placement it gives you on a crowded dashboard.

Android Auto is now a common feature in vehicles today, but not all of them give it to you wirelessly. AAWireless was one of the first to tackle this in the aftermarket, initially starting out as an Indiegogo campaign and now readily available online. Its premise was always too simple: use your phone with Android Auto without plugging in any cables.

Small and easy to set up, the device delivers on its premise for those who want to keep it simple, yet also adds additional features and tweaks to ensure more tech-savvy drivers have workarounds in case things don't work as they should.

AAWireless: Price and availability

AAWireless first came to market under a crowdfunding campaign in 2020 and its success has broadened availability online through Amazon and its own website. The $90 price stayed consistent, and fluctuations aren't common, unless there is a promotion or sale. As competition grows in this space, a price drop could always happen.

AAWireless: What's good

For a long while, the AAWireless was a tough product to get one's hands on, especially in 2021 when Indiegogo backers got the first batches before everyone else could see what the fuss was all about. When first introduced in 2020, the idea behind it was not only novel but highly necessary.

Automakers were including wireless charging pads in their vehicles, while consumer electronics vendors were making all sorts of wireless charging cradles and mounts. With very few exceptions, the problem was that you couldn't use Android Auto unless you plugged your phone into the car stereo system.

Even though wireless connectivity is growing in newer vehicles, so many out there simply don't have that option. Same with those using aftermarket head units, as I do. Setting up the AAWireless was a fairly easy process because the AAWireless app walked me through every step. If you're not sure how to enable wireless Android Auto on your phone, the app includes a handy tutorial to take care of that. Including an update to the firmware from the outset, I was up and running in less than 10 minutes. 

There's not much to it, really. Plug the dongle into the correct USB port, where it will flash green, and once paired with your phone, the LED turns blue to indicate a solid connection. There were a couple of hiccups along the way, though, so not everything was smooth, like how it took three attempts to finally download and install the firmware.

It's a small device—like an overgrown box of matches—and very lightweight. Depending on where your USB port is, you might be able to get away with hiding it in the center console or some other nook in the cabin. I didn't have that luxury, so tried to improvise, which I'll touch on later. 

Once Android Auto appears, it will work as if you were plugged in. I did notice some interesting functional issues along the way, one of which involved starting the car. Basically, if I was using the phone for anything when starting the car, be it sending a text or checking a restaurant rating, the AAWireless dongle would try to connect, only to abort each time. It wasn't until I stopped and put the phone down that the Android Auto interface popped up.

While the app doesn't address this particular instance, it is chock full of workarounds for other potential challenges that might come up. 

GM Fix addresses an issue where the head unit in some GM vehicles will occasionally reboot due to unstable pairing with a phone. VAG Crash does the same thing for Volkswagen and Skoda vehicles. Disable Media Sink will playback audio through the phone speaker instead of the car stereo if you ever need to do that. Disabling the Passthrough means you can tinker a little more, like adjusting the DPI (dots per inch) displayed, removing tap restrictions, and more.

Remove tap restrictions negates the limits Google imposes on how much you can tap or swipe on the screen for certain apps. If you've ever tried to scroll through a playlist on Spotify, you know what I mean. The one problem with enabling it is that it can bring out bugs, like dodgy location tracking on Google Maps, for instance.

The important part is that if you just want to leave it as is, the dongle just works. When Android Auto appeared, I could use apps, talk to Google Assistant, and search for points of interest exactly like I would if I were plugged in to do all that. Latency isn't an issue when doing all those things, either, which is why this setup feels a lot like plugging the phone in always did.

I also like that AAWireless makes it easy to pair more than one phone. This is great if you've upgraded to a new device or your partner wants to connect as well. You will need to keep the original phone away and turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off to do this, plus go through all the initial steps to set it up, including downloading the app on the second phone.

As of this review, there is no easy way to switch between the two phones. The dongle will always look to connect with the last phone you set it up with, and when it can't find it, it then moves on to the other one. So, while it's very cool to have more than one phone work, the functionality afterward isn't seamless yet.

AAWireless: What's not good

AAWireless doesn't come with an adhesive pad to stick it wherever you want on the dash. I ended up using the one that came with the Motorola MA1, but given that one isn't very good, this dongle fell just as often as that one did. You can use two-sided tape or another solution, but that is entirely up to you.

I mentioned buggy connections when starting the car, and that was where I saw the most inconsistency. There were times when Android Auto would appear on my screen after a mere 10 seconds, while it took over 90 seconds in other cases. Why the discrepancy? I have no idea. I asked Emil Borconi, the man who developed AAWireless, and he posited that it may have been because I had turned on power-saving features, like a battery-saving mode. I hadn't, so it couldn't be that. 

Could it have been because I was connecting to an aftermarket Pioneer AVH-2300NEX head unit instead of a factory one from an automaker? It's hard to tell, given the variance in timing, but you may or may not experience something similar once you start your car.

Freeing up your phone with the AAWireless doesn't mean your phone is entirely untethered. The wireless setup harnesses the phone's resources and, as such, sips battery life at a faster rate. You're fine if you plug in or use your car's wireless charger, something I really advise you do on longer drives. A short jaunt to run an errand won't pose a problem, but if you're commuting or road-tripping, make sure the phone is charging somewhere.

You may also notice your phone runs hotter if you are charging it at the same time you're running Android Auto wirelessly. I never encountered any overheating problems, but it was something I noticed relative to what the phone would feel like if I was running the platform through a standard wired connection.

AAWireless: Competition

There is a growing number of dongles and gizmos enabling a wireless Android Auto connection in virtually every car that doesn't otherwise offer it. The Motorola MA1 is one of the most prominent, though it doesn't include a dedicated app to tweak features or troubleshoot potential compatibility issues the way AAWireless does.

Others, like Carsifi and Carlinkit 4.0, follow similar design principles AAWireless does, with Carsifi, in particular, including a physical button to switch between paired phones. 

AAWireless: Should you buy it?

You should buy this if...

• You want wireless Android Auto
• You drive a vehicle with no other option but wired Android Auto
• You want to charge your phone wirelessly
• You want app support for tweaks and troubleshooting

You shouldn't buy this if...

• You are fine with plugging in to run Android Auto
• You don't have a wireless charger
• You're not sure where you would place it

Running wireless Android Auto feels liberating, especially if you've never experienced it before. AAWireless always focused on delivering that, and save for some potential compatibility issues the app tries to rectify, this small dongle does the job. That the app also enables firmware updates means there's room for improvement whenever that comes along.

Despite its stature, you may need to figure out where to place it, but that shouldn't be a deal-breaker when you get so much out of this device.

Android Auto remains the easiest and safest way to get your Android apps in the car. How you get Android Auto in your car, or better yet, how you experience it, can vary depending on what accessories you use to amplify or create the compatibility you're looking for. The good news is there are adapters, dongles, and even full-on displays that can help you get there.

You've got what you need for the road

Even if you feel this world of Android Auto gizmos is a little murky, the results will probably show you otherwise. Never mind simply having Android Auto in the car; when it's wireless, it just feels all the more liberating. 

The AAWireless stands out among a growing pack of options because it offers a level of support not all devices like it have, including a dedicated app and firmware updates to improve or add new features. The Motorola MA1 is more well-known because of its brand familiarity, and like other adapters in this list, you kind of forget about it once you set it up, which is very much the point. 

Cars without any built-in compatibility with Android Auto aren't left out entirely when the Intellidash and Carpuride let you bring in a whole screen onto the dash. Whether it's going wireless or just being able to use the platform to begin with, you've got avenues to pursue to change how you use it while you drive.

What you need to know

• TomTom introduced a new "truck plan" in its GO Navigation app.
• Truck drivers who subscribe to TomTom GO Navigation will be able to plan routes differently than other drivers.
• The feature is available now, and will only work on Android devices for now. 

Being a truck driver is essential work, but can also be a thankless job, and TomTom is hoping to make things a little easier when getting from one stop to another. Its GO Navigation app now features a "truck plan" as an add-on to its premium subscription mapping service only available on Android. 

The idea is to simplify trucking routes by pointing out the things drivers need along the way. That means routes will take into account how big the vehicle is, what fuel it needs, the desired maximum speed, and whether or not it's carrying cargo that could be dangerous to others. 

Vehicle size and cargo type also have legal implications, particularly when it comes to speed limits or staying away from prohibited routes. UN Class restrictions also come into play for compliance, especially when crossing borders. TomTom says further updates will bring in information about low emission zones, among other potential additions. 

To help make routes smoother, drivers will be able to set multiple drop-offs with points of interest along the way on their Android phones. Gas stations that can cater to large trucks, as well as truck stops for overnight stays, are two that will pop up on the map. Others, like parking for any reason, will appear on the map to guide drivers when they need to stop, regardless of whether it's part of the route or not.

The Route Bar shows all pertinent info related to the route, like where the stops are, what restrictions exist en route, and any other alerts that might pop up. The truck plan map already integrates existing navigation features TomTom includes in its maps, like live traffic and intuitive lane guidance.

Since TomTom GO already works with Android Auto, trucks equipped with the ability to run that platform will have the chance to sync the route info with head unit display. TomTom says it designed the truck plan user interface to minimize distractions, and that it is prioritizing ETAs (estimated time of arrival) to change in real time based on incoming traffic data.

While other popular mapping apps, like Google Maps and Waze, also focus on finding the best routes, they don't have features specific to trucks. TomTom believes an added focus on truck drivers will help them stay focused on the road and on schedule.

TomTom is offering its truck plan for 50% off until Sept. 21, and applies to both new and existing GO Navigation users.

Waymo has finally brought its driverless cars to downtown Phoenix as it shifts to include denser populated areas.

According to The Verge, the inclusion of these robotaxis in downtown Phoenix comes after Waymo started its Trusted Tester Program in late 2021. Interested parties in the program could join a waiting list, wait for approval, and sign an NDA.

Those waitlisted can now enjoy robotic drives around Phoenix's metropolitan area, with the hopes that it will make Phoenix a "more inclusive city."

The inclusion of Downtown Phoenix signals the Alphabet-owned company becoming more comfortable with bringing its automated driving service to larger cities. Waymo has been testing its self-driving car service in the less-dense surrounding suburbs of Phoenix since 2017. According to Waymo, its current service areas include San Francisco, downtown Phoenix, Phoenix Sky Harbor, and Phoenix East Valley. 

Trips for the Phoenix Sky Harbor are only limited to Waymo employees, with a safety driver included at the moment. In San Francisco, there is testing for Waymo employees rider-only trips alongside paid trips for Trusted Testers with a safety driver on board. As far as Phoenix East Valley is concerned, this testing is open to rider-only trips for members of the public.

Waymo One is the company's driverless car service which has recently been updated to include the ongoing tests in downtown Phoenix. Android users can download the app from the Google Play Store, and iOS users can navigate the Apple App Store. Customers can hail a car and customize its dashboard display with a unique two-letter formula, so you'll know if it's your ride or not.

It's also worth noting that the Waymo One service is completely driverless without the inclusion of a safety driver. Typically, these automated cars come with a driver who is there in case something goes wrong with the vehicle. Waymo's current public testing is moving away from including such a person depending on the area and whether or not the passenger is an employee or "trusted tester." According to Tech Crunch, Waymo's co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov stated in May that removing the safety driver began employee tests in downtown Phoenix before the company decided to expand to the Trusted Testers program.

For drivers with long daily commutes, the best wireless car chargers are an excellent investment. Beyond the fact that plugging and unplugging your phone can be a pain, most car chargers come with a mount or phone holder that places your phone closer to eye level, so you're not glancing down when your gaze should be on the road. Qi wireless chargers have already started creeping into our offices and homes. If you're using a Qi-enabled phone, you should absolutely grab one of these chargers and go wire-free in the car too.

Sensors and magnets and springs

The biggest differentiators when picking the best wireless car charger are going to be how the mount attaches to your car, and how the mount grips your phone. If you prefer a no-nonsense mount that uses the standard springs, then the iOttie Wireless Car Charger is a great choice. It's a bit bulky in the dashboard style, but it has a suction cup to easily stay on your window or dash, so long as it's not a ridiculous temperature out. Plus, the spring mounts tend to last well over a year before wearing out.

I prefer air vent models because they tend to fit a wider array of vehicles. Plus, the air from the AC blows over the mount and your phone, which helps keep them cool as wireless charging generates some heat. Something like the iOttie iTap 2 will definitely fit the bill if you agree.

Of course, before you buy any of these, check if your Android phone supports wireless charging. If not, you can always try a car phone holder or magnetic mount that doesn't offer charging, and then invest in one of the best car chargers separately.

There would've been a time when a device like Car Thing made a lot of sense. Bluetooth connectivity came long before Android Auto and CarPlay ever did, and Spotify launched its service in the U.S. back in 2011. In-car infotainment does continue to stumble along, but has made big strides and it's within that prism that Spotify's Car Thing comes into broader focus.

Do you need another screen in your car? Do you even want another screen in your car, even if you are a Spotify Premium subscriber? While small, Car Thing has to fit in somewhere to make a better case for seeing and touching it while driving.

Spotify Car Thing: Price and availability

Spotify initially did a "limited" launch for Car Thing in April 2021, with general availability coming in February 2022. That made it much easier to find, and it often comes at $90. It will likely be steady there for a while, but price drops are probably coming along the way. It only comes in one model, so there are no variants. It's also currently only available in the U.S.

Spotify Car Thing: What's good

Oftentimes, the smaller the device made for your car, the easier it is to integrate, and Spotify Car Thing isn't hard to bring in and leave in place. The device also isn't all that complicated, both in setup and execution. It comes with three ways to mount it in your car. You can either slip it over an air vent, stick it to the dash with an adhesive or mount it in front of the CD player. If you still have one of the latter in your car, it's just a mount with hooks that lock into the CD player slot. A cool idea and one I didn't expect to come in the box.

Each of these has a disc-shaped surface that connects to the device through magnets. The device itself only has one USB-C port and needs to plug into the included 12V socket charger on the other end for power. If you are going to use a third-party one you like, it needs the juice to power Car Thing. Spotify included two USB-A ports in its own charger, so you can always charge something else at the same time.

Car Thing does ultimately run through your phone, so it needs to connect to Bluetooth, which it starts to enable upon scanning the QR code in the quick start guide. I went through the Spotify app to do it and was up and running in only a few minutes. Very foolproof and easy for anyone to follow and set up, which is a big plus for anyone who might be intimidated by bringing a tech device into the cabin.

Its size, which measures a very modest 4.5-inches wide and 2.5-inches tall, makes it easy to position where you want, though its smaller 3.97-inch touchscreen won't dominate your dash in any major way. 

While Car Thing is largely just an extension of the app on your phone, it does a couple of things that can prove useful. Four buttons up top align as presets you can choose for playlists or albums. Play something and hold down the button you want to assign to it, and that's it. Any of those buttons you press will start playing that playlist, album, or radio station, and if you set playback to shuffle, it will just start with a random track.

The fifth button is a shortcut to the settings, and the key there is the microphone. Car Thing has its own voice assistant, where saying, "Hey Spotify," hands-free can make the device play what you want. Some commands are basic, like "pause music," "skip this song," and "play (whatever) playlist." It's pretty responsive, and I liked it for its utility as a hands-free way to try discovering something new, though results are mixed at best.

I also liked the dial and back button for their simple navigation. The dial is great for moving quickly through a playlist or just moving through the interface — not unlike the rotary dial some cars use to navigate an infotainment system. Press it to make a selection and the back button to return to the previous screen.

The tight integration with your phone also means Car Thing will play content you've saved to the device. If you're driving through a dead zone or trying to save data, any saved playlists or albums will play data-free through the device. 

Even apart from that, I liked how Car Thing kept Spotify active and visible on its screen, while my phone could run Waze or Google Maps for navigation. I can see the allure for rideshare drivers, just as much as I do for anyone driving a vehicle that doesn't have Android Auto or CarPlay in it.

Incidentally, Car Thing also acts as an extension of the phone and app when Android Auto is running, too. It may seem like overkill, given Spotify is easy enough to navigate on a larger infotainment screen, but again, if you always wanted Spotify to stay visible, that kind of setup won't be a problem.

Spotify Car Thing: What's not good

A major factor here is Car Thing only works with Spotify Premium accounts, so if you're listening on the free tier, this device does nothing for you. On the Family tier, only the primary account holder can use it, limiting the scope of its utility. And if you have any ideas of somehow integrating this with your computer or whatever other devices you use to play Spotify, forget it. That's not happening. Only tablets will work apart from phones.

Get past those prerequisites, and you encounter other challenges. One is the mounting itself. Car Thing includes a disclaimer noting how placing it in front of an air vent could pose problems for the microphone. Moreover, too much heat or AC might also not be good for it. Not every vent is made the same way, so your results may vary. The other mounting options aren't as sturdy as I would like, which I found a disappointment for a device that feels pretty feathery, otherwise.

The other is Android Auto, whose presence almost renders Car Thing as an unnecessary want more than an essential need. As I covered earlier, the two work together just fine, but you would have to feel like Spotify on Android Auto — and by extension, Google Assistant — aren't doing something right for you.

Testing out the Car Thing was largely an exercise in discovering what its true purpose was. For older vehicles, it makes total sense. If you don't have Android Auto, nor any way to integrate Spotify into your car, this thing may feel like it solves a real pain point while driving with tunes playing. 

For vehicles with Android Auto, and especially those who can deploy it wirelessly, Car Thing feels like an add-on that you shoehorn into the mix for purely selfish reasons. You want another screen in the car or prefer its layout to that of the phone or infotainment display. I don't necessarily need to touch the device if I can play, pause and skip tracks using my steering wheel controls. 

I also experienced a couple of connectivity issues while driving that I couldn't figure out. For whatever reason, the device just wouldn't connect to my phone, even though everything was fine. Admittedly, there's a wonky element to Car Thing that I couldn't shake, be it from the aforementioned connectivity trouble or the relative challenges with the mounts and interface.

Spotify Car Thing: Should you buy it?

You should buy this if...

• You are a Spotify Premium subscriber
• You drive an older vehicle (with Bluetooth)
• You want your phone free to display something else
• You're cool with adding another screen to the car

You shouldn't buy this if...

• You are fine with Android Auto
• You are fine using your phone on a dock
• You aren't sure what you would do with it
• You only listen to Spotify's free tier

Despite its lack of focus, Spotify wasn't wrong in attempting something like Car Thing. I think it would've been better served to create something that would have Spotify built-in with the ability to store music offline. Or at the very least, to include features that would be exclusive to such a device that could integrate with Android Auto. 

As is, its focus is both singular and unclear because it's hard to see how it improves the listening experience for those who already have ways to do it while driving. Car Thing is definitely niche, but probably not in the way Spotify might've had in mind.

Once you go wireless with Android Auto, it's hard to go back, and Motorola thinks it has the gizmo to make that happen, no matter what car you have. Granted, you do need to be able to run the platform to begin with, but if you've always had to plug in via USB to make it happen, this device may let you untether it. 

With such a simple premise, you would expect the results to be just as straightforward. For the most part, they will be, though you do have to deal with some challenges along the way.

Motorola MA1: Price and availability

Motorola announced and launched the MA1 in January 2022 and has held steady since at its original $90 price tag. That may change in due course, though, especially if Motorola adds to its in-car gadget lineup with similar products. 

Motorola MA1: What's good

It's always nice when a small device has one job to do because it's easier to set and meet expectations. That's exactly how I looked at the Motorola MA1 when I got my hands on it. I knew what it was supposed to do, so my curiosity was more about how robust and consistent it would be.

But first, I had to figure out where I was going to put it. It's not so much about the size because the MA1 isn't big; it's more about where the car's USB port is. In my case, I have a Pioneer aftermarket head unit installed in mine that has its own USB port by way of a separate cable that comes out near the glove compartment. I could leave the device dangling and lay it down under the passenger seat or use the included adhesive pad to position it somewhere on the dash. 

I settled on a spot next to the head unit screen because the pad seemed to stick best to the glossier surface. I don't know why, but it just did. The rest of the setup was pretty straightforward in that I had to pair with the MA1 via Bluetooth and run through the Android Auto setup to get the sequence working. Once done, I could unplug my phone, plug in the MA1, and then have a wireless tether going to run the platform.

It was pretty smooth and liberating to see myself running it on a 2014 model vehicle. Every subsequent time I turned the car on, it would take about 20 seconds or so to get everything going on. Obviously not as instantaneous as using a cable, but hey, I'll take it if it means I can leave my phone free or use a wireless charging dock instead.

That is one of the pain points the MA1 can solve, which is to make a wireless charger actually useful, especially if you're driving a vehicle that includes it. There are plenty out there that have them — yet also force you to plug in to use Android Auto, which charges the phone at the same time anyway. Using the MA1 alters that reality in a big way, including if your car doesn't have a wireless charging pad. Get a third-party dock, and you've got a pretty slick setup inside the cabin.

What's even better is that, despite the slower startup, the rest of the Android Auto experience doesn't feel any different. The interface was just as responsive, steering wheel controls work the same way, and so do voice commands. It's not a perfect transition, mind you, and I'll get to that, but general usability left a lot to like.

Even better was that the wireless connection didn't kill my phone's battery. I mostly tested it with the Pixel 6 Pro, and at worst, the MA1 just sipped a little power over the course of a drive. It was pretty negligible, and even at lower battery levels, I was fine. I could always plug in through a 12V socket charger if I wanted to charge the phone faster.

The MA1 doesn't have its own dedicated app or any software method to interface with it directly. Only the main button on the side and the LED light stand as manual inputs or visible cues, so I don't know if Motorola is able to push firmware updates to this thing. If not, then I'm also unclear on whether Android Auto itself or software on a paired phone, helps fill any performance gaps. 

Thing is, it is connecting to the phone via Bluetooth and does need a 5GHz connection. One thing I didn't have a chance to try is to see how the device works in tandem with an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot. Plenty of vehicles offer hotspots, yet also don't do wireless Android Auto. It they can work together, that would be awesome, but I don't know for sure.

Motorola MA1: What's not good

One of my concerns with the MA1 is what happens when it's time to switch phones or vehicles. Bluetooth pairings don't make the transition, even if you are migrating from one phone directly to another, which means you have to pair the MA1 all over again. To do so, you have to put it back to factory settings through a series of button presses where the LED changes color to indicate its status.

I bring this up because the original MA1 Motorola sent me failed to factory reset properly, so they sent a replacement owing to the original possibly being defective. I didn't try factory resetting the second one, but it otherwise functioned without any connectivity problems.

It's one of the potential pitfalls of a device that, while singularly focused, doesn't have an easy way to interface with it when something doesn't seem right. You may never run into any problems, and resetting it might never be an issue, but as a piece of advice, I would try the reset process first before unpairing it from your phone, in case you're troubleshooting anything. Losing that connection means the MA1 is running blind.

I also bring up software and troubleshooting because it's hard to know what to do to fix anything that might come up, or even if the MA1 is responsible. The LED is the only indication that something might be wrong, but even then, it's not a tell. For instance, flashing green means the device is trying to connect, and a solid light means it has. If the light is solid, yet you're not getting a connection, it's hard to understand what to do.

Motorola's troubleshooting steps are limited, and the factory reset is likely going to be your go-to in case things really go awry. My second review unit worked without issue, so I can't complain. I'm just not sure about further down the line, and for someone who isn't as tech-savvy, troubleshooting this thing would feel tenuous.

Also, the adhesive pad Motorola provides isn't the best. I do like that it doesn't leave residue, only it also struggles to stick to textured surfaces, which are pretty common in dashboards and vehicle interiors. This matters more because of the USB ports' location in the car. They can be at the front or in the center console. They might even be in front of a wireless charging pad. Placement is a tricky business if faced with situational challenges like that.

Not a big deal, in the grander scheme, but something to consider if you feel the device could somehow get in the way. 

Motorola MA1: Competition

Dongles for wireless Android Auto aren't abundant, but Motorola definitely doesn't hold a monopoly, either. The AAWireless is a very similar product that can perform well, albeit with less retail availability. If you're more technically inclined, you might want to try the Carlinkit, which is as much an infotainment replacement as something that simply makes Android Auto wireless.

Alternatively, you can always go wired if the MA1 doesn't work out, or you prefer to tether that way. It's still pretty bulletproof and charges your phone all at once.

Motorola MA1: Should you buy it?

You should buy this if...

• You want wireless Android Auto
• You drive a vehicle with no other option but wired Android Auto
• You want your phone free wirelessly charge
• You know exactly where you would place it

You shouldn't buy this if...

• You are fine with wired Android Auto
• You don't have a wireless charger
• You would rather use something with an app
• You're not sure where you would place it

It may come with the potential for headaches at some point, but that's also speculative, and given what the MA1 can do, it is worth giving it a shot. Wireless Android Auto is just awesome, and the flexibility it gives for either charging your phone wirelessly, or simply docking it without a cable sticking out of it, should feel liberating.

It's unclear how Android OS updates might improve the MA1's performance, so that remains to be seen. All in all, it's a utility product that has one job to do, and when all goes well, it does that one job fairly well.

What you need to know

• Android Automotive OS will receive its first "full-scale web browser."
• The browser will only be usable when parked, though some content will work while you drive.
• This browser will currently only be available to Polestar 2 drivers, not other Android Automotive cars.
• Vivaldi's browser protects your privacy, so Polestar won't receive any data.

Vivaldi arrived on Android phones last year, offering native ad blocking, tracking protection, synced user data across devices, and a tabbed interface reminiscent of a desktop browser.

Now, the browser is coming to Android Automotive. Specifically to the Polestar 2 infotainment system, which gives you Google Assistant access without needing to plug in an Android phone.

It's a fully functioning touch-based browser, not the usual app-based system that Android Auto or Echo Auto offers. So you can go to sites like YouTube that most automotive OSs would never allow.

Of course, the Vivaldi Android Automotive OS doesn't disregard safety like, say, a Tesla touchscreen, which absurdly lets you play games while driving. Instead, you can only use it while fully parked; once you start driving, it'll switch to "audio-only." That way, you can start a Zoom call with colleagues before you start driving, or use YouTube or Netflix as a podcast during long road trips.

If you have a Vivaldi account, this browser will sync with your other browsers, making it easier to access your bookmarks. But Polestar itself won't have access to your private browsing data. Again, this stands in stark contrast with the Tesla browser, which does store your data by default.

Vivaldi says it will regularly update the Android Automotive browser alongside its other platforms, and that it will be available in European, North American, and Asia Pacific markets where the Polestar 2 is sold. Most recently, the Vivaldi 5.0 update brought double-decker tabs and a side panel for larger screens like tablets. In theory, both new tools could appear in the Automotive-based version.

Unfortunately, other Android Automotive cars won't receive this browser. Vivaldi could theoretically bring it to Volvo, GMC, Ford, or Lincoln cars with this infotainment display in the future; we will reach out to Vivaldi and provide an update if they confirm or deny this.

It's pretty much illegal anywhere you go to hold onto your phone while you drive, so not only is a car phone holder a handy investment, it's the law. Plain old cradle-and-clamp car mounts can be a big, fat pain, whereas a great magnetic mount makes life so much easier when you're getting in and out of the car. These are the best magnetic car mounts for your phone.

What about my wireless charging?

Having anything metal on the back of your phone means that you're not going to be able to wireless charge while it's on your phone. Some people get around this by keeping the metal plate in the case and removing the case to wireless charge the phone, but most magnetic mount users charge via wire instead.

There are some magnetic Qi charging car mounts out there that use a big, open magnetic ring to hold the phone in place over the Qi charging coils, but these mounts don't have the best track record and I'd advise not tempting fate with one at this time. I'm fine sticking to the VICSEED magnetic mount and the Spigen Style Ring POP and then just charging up with a cord when on longer trips.

If you don't mind sacrificing the ability of wireless charging, then these mounts will be perfect for you. This will assist you when coming to long trips across the country, or even if you're just heading to a new place. This is much safer than using your phone while driving, and it's also a lot more legal.

The best car phone holders make sure your phone is secure and within reach while safely operating your vehicle. When you're on the go, your phone is more than just a tool for keeping in touch. It's your road trip DJ, your trusty navigator, and for safety's sake, you need to mount it up securely. Your hands need to be on the wheel, not your phone, and you don't need to be looking down for directions at highway speeds. We've gathered up a list of some excellent options for universal car phone holders and mounts for your needs.

Should you go magnetic with a car phone holder?

Sifting through the best universal car mounts means getting an idea of how you want actually to mount your phone in the car. Whether it's the windshield, air vent, dash, 12V socket, or cupholder, the options do vary considerably. You will need to look at your phone's size and weight before you do, to be sure it fits and can handle the weight, even more so if your phone has a case on it.

With that in mind, you don't get as portable as the Maxboost Car Mount, especially when combined with the magnetic-mount-compatible Spigen Style Ring POP that you can carry with you. If you do like wireless charging, bear in mind that it may not be as valuable if you need to plug into your car's infotainment system via USB to use Android Auto. If you can use it wirelessly, having a mount with a Qi charger is pretty convenient.

However, having some flexibility would be nice, both in how I want to mount the phone and how I want to angle it. The one that has stood out there is the iOttie Easy One Touch 5, with its easy one-touch release and user-friendly design. It even has a telescoping arm that you can use to put it almost wherever you want.

Google Maps in Android Auto has received a new update that should make navigating with a right-hand drive vehicle a bit more convenient. The app's user interface can now be adjusted for drivers in the United Kingdom and other countries where the driver sits on the right side of the vehicle.

In a post on Android Auto's help page, a Google representative said Maps can now reorient by placing turn-by-turn information and the navigation bar closer to the driver. The post reads:

This update relocates the app's key features to the right side of the screen, making it easier for British drivers to set destinations or tap important buttons.

Beyond the British roads, the new update also comes in handy for drivers in other regions such as Australasia, Ireland, the Indian subcontinent, Hong Kong and Japan, where drivers stick to the left side of the road while behind the wheels.

Google added that it will roll out an option to return to the default orientation in a future update to one of the best Android Auto apps. In addition to this handy update, the latest version of Android Auto also fixes a number of right-to-left language issues in Maps.

The changes are rolling out worldwide for all users of Google's car infotainment system.

This is super helpful so you don't have to keep dismounting it and reattaching it and stuff like that over and over again. Plus, if you're using your smartphone's navigation for directions, you really want to be able to see the screen very well and this will help you get it perfect.

You can connect pretty much any phone, whether they are large or small. The mount uses rare Earth magnets. These are even designed to be used with cases, so they're so strong you don't have to remove your case or anything like that. Italy's antitrust watchdog, AGCM, has fined Google over €100 million ($123 million) for abuse of its dominant position. In a press release announcing the sanction, Italy's Competition Authority says the search giant has violated Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

The antitrust authority's findings revealed that Google did not allow energy company Enel X Italia to release an Android Auto version of its JuicePass app, which helps electric vehicle owners find and reserve a place at charging stations. Google's motive behind the restriction, according to the AGCM, was to favor Google Maps, one of its best Android apps. While the app currently only allows users to find and get directions to charging stations, it is expected to gain new functionalities such as reservation and payment in the future.

Google claims that its strict guidelines on apps' access to Android Auto are required to ensure drivers do not get distracted while they are driving. In a statement sent to Reuters, Google said:

The antitrust authority believes that if Google continues to exclude the Enel X Italia app from Android Auto, it could "permanently jeopardize Enel X Italia's chances of building a solid user base at a time of significant growth in sales of electric vehicles." It adds that the move has also lead to "an impoverishment of consumer choice and an obstacle to technological progress."

Italy's AGCM is also investing Google's advertising business for alleged abuse of its dominant position in the country's digital advertising market. The probe is expected to be concluded by November this year.

After Android Auto went through a makeover in 2019, and then its "Coolwalk" refresh in 2022, Google's platform continues to steadily improve in both looks and functionality. Starting with the split-screen home screen and grid app launcher, it's never been easier to use Android Auto, no matter if your screen is a touch or non-touch head unit. Here's how to find your way around every time you look at it.

Getting around the Android Auto interface

When Android Auto launches, the default screen is this one here, the split-screen interface that puts one app in the primary spot and two on the side. The bottom row has shortcuts to the app grid, Google Assistant, your most recent apps, plus the time, data connection, and your phone's battery life. Tap on an app and it occupies the primary spot.

The next most important visual point of the interface is the app drawer because it holds several functional implications. The top four apps on the first line are anchored there like a "dock" specifically designated for maps, music, and phones. You can select which music apps you prefer to use, in case YouTube Music and Podcasts aren't your preferred choices, but it will usually pin the ones you use most on its own.

Below that are all the other apps you have that are compatible with the platform. Some of those listed below, like Calendar and Weather, have Google Assistant icons on them. Tap them and the voice assistant reads off pertinent information like your next calendar appointment or the current day's forecast.

There's always a shortcut to Google Assistant for everything at any time through the microphone icon, usually toward the lower-left corner. When you're playing music while running another app — let's say a map, in this case —  you'll see playback controls for that audio app laid out underneath. If you were playing music on your phone before you got into the car, it would resume in the car stereo by default once the platform launches after turning the vehicle on.

Select the music app to see its interface onscreen, and the Maps icon will either switch over to the side or the icon appears at the bottom with turn-by-turn directions appearing on the bottom row, basically flip-flopping the two. Other times, it will be the Phone app instead, depending on whether you were just on a call or opened that app to look at call history, for instance. The home button will always take you back to the split home screen or app grid, no matter what is open.

Handling notifications

Android Auto can display notifications anytime they come in, accessible both onscreen and via Google Assistant. Most of them will center around calls, messages, and navigation, but others could pop up, be it reminders or alerts you've set through the virtual assistant as well.

When they do appear, you can tap them to get to the corresponding app, where you may be able to call back or respond to a message using Google Assistant. In case notifications aren't getting through or want to see if a setting is missing, you can follow these simple steps:
