'Tis officially the season for tablet deals and other device discounts, as Black Friday week officially arrives. As such, buyers can currently get half off the price of the Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet, bringing the price down to just $70.

The HD 10 is one of our favorite Fire tablets, especially for those in a household who want it to be used among multiple family members, both old and young. While Amazon also offers a similar HD 10 Fire tablet edition for kids, this one is actually also a good pick for its parental controls settings and compatibility with the MFA stylus, which offers up to 4,000 levels of pressure for drawing, note-taking, and other stylus uses.

It also includes both front- and rear-facing cameras, an improved processor from former generations, and a decent battery life that will get most users through a school day or work day, even when performing power-intensive tasks.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet is our favorite Fire tablet for sharing, offering a solid mid-level size amongst the rest of the retailer's tablet options. The 10.1-inch screen offers a 1920 x 1200 resolution, while performance is backed by a basic octa-core CPU and 3GB of RAM.

While this deal is just for the 32GB version of the device, it also comes with a microSD port that will let users have up to 1TB of storage. Additionally, it sports around 13 hours of battery life per charge, 5MP cameras on both the front and rear, easy-to-use parental controls for shared device use, and compatibility with the separately sold Amazon stylus.

Don't be fooled by the low Black Friday price tag; the Fire HD 10 offers decent enough performance speeds for most casual users, and especially for those who plan to use it for basic streaming, non-power-intensive games, web browsing and other low-level tasks.

There are plenty of tech products out there. Some are great buys offering excellent value, but others aren't. Most fall somewhere in the middle.

Unless you have the means to buy one of everything, you have to decide if something is the right fit for you. That can be hard; the companies making them will tell you that you need one to make your life complete, people who got a lemon or just didn't like it will say the product is garbage, and reviewers simply can't cover everything.

Often, it's good to take a step back and see what's inside that pretty package. Was it worth what you paid for it? Will you get enough use from it to justify the purchase? Or maybe you should hold off and see what's coming next.

We can't make those decisions for you, but we can tell you what we think and maybe where you should start your decision-making process.

Early Black Friday sales are already here, and we'll see even more in the next few weeks. Some of the best deals out there will be from Amazon's first-party devices. Are these something you should buy?

The deals will be wild

Amazon is the online king of Black Friday. You will find great deals at places like Walmart or Best Buy, too, but Amazon has a gazillion tech products, and it seems like they all get a Black Friday deal worth looking at.

Some of the best deals will be for Amazon's own products, like an Echo or the Fire line of tablets. It seems that Amazon is willing to lose money selling these because the company knows they will encourage you to use Amazon services more. That's not a bad strategy if your company can afford it, and Amazon certainly can.

But let's be honest: these products aren't for everyone. They are only worth buying if they are something you'll use. Google's Nest line of smart home products is, in my opinion, miles ahead of Amazon's Echo and Alexa. But if you use Alexa, the Echo is a much better buy. And plenty of people do.

Before you buy anything, you should ignore the deal and the low price and ask yourself if you'll use it.

What makes the Fire Tablet a good fit?

There is no right way or wrong way to use a tablet, but there are different ways to use one.

If you want a bigger screen with longer battery life to consume, Amazon's Fire tablets might be for you. Especially if you're already (or thinking of becoming) an Amazon Prime subscriber.

You can watch movies, TV shows, and videos on any modern tablet, even Amazon's Prime Video offerings. But if this is your primary use case, like it is for a lot of folks, then a new Fire HD makes it easy, and you'll have a lot of money left to buy more and more of that content. You aren't missing anything; you don't need a stupid-crazy powerful Apple processor or a world-class Samsung display to watch a movie on the couch. You need quick and easy access to the content, and Amazon offers it.

What about the kids? I think Amazon's Fire Kids tablets are one of the best things a parent can buy for their child. I will say that there is nothing you can do with one that can't be done on something like a Galaxy Tab or a OnePlus tablet, but the parental controls over what the kiddos have access to are dead simple on the Fire Kids versions. Simple means you'll do it, keeping the things you don't want your kids to see away. Until they get smart enough to work around it all anyway.

There are a few gray areas, too. Gaming is a big one. If you want the best gaming experience or love to play intense and demanding games, the Fire isn't the best way to do it. If you want to play more mobile-style games or the kids want to play Minecraft, well, the Fire tablet is a winner because it's more than adequate and usually about one-third of the price.

Don't buy a Fire Tab and expect everything

Of course, there are things the Fire Tab isn't good at doing. When it comes to productivity, things like working with spreadsheets or doing homework, nothing beats a good Android tablet. And yes, I say that as an iPad user. Don't be shocked, I use what fits me best.

A good Galaxy Tab or even a Chromebook with a great touchscreen is the way to get work done because the software is there. Yes, my iPad can be more responsive, and I can buy a special Pencil. But Google Docs is integrated into Android and Chrome devices in ways that make it a better experience.

If you are thinking of going all in and using a tablet for your entire mobile computing needs, well, the Fire Tab isn't going to cut it. Buy yourself a new Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra or an iPad Pro and call it done.

I've got one and love it

I'm not a big tablet user. I lean towards a Chromebook if I need more screen space than my phone offers, but I have a Fire HD 10. I bought it because it was on sale for crazy cheap, too, when the newer model came out.

It makes a perfect device for packing into a bag or the back of the passenger seat on a trip where sitting and staring out the window for hundreds of miles is mind-numbingly boring. Take the time to download a few hours of video, and you have instant entertainment. You can even do things like check your email in a pinch if you left your phone behind.

I wouldn't bring an expensive tablet on every road trip because I don't want to risk losing or damaging it. A Tab S is fine for a hotel room where things are clean and safe, but camping out of the back of a truck screams Fire HD to me. It won't mind a little bit of dirt, and if something crazy does happen, I'm not out $800.

Sometimes, it's the right device, and if any of this rings true with you, yeah. Treat yourself and buy an Amazon tablet this Black Friday.

Cheap tablets can mostly be found year-round, though it doesn't hurt that Black Friday sales are approaching. As such, Amazon has chopped 45% off the Fire HD 8 tablet for its early Black Friday sale, meaning the discounted price point is set at just $55.

It's worth noting that the Fire HD 8 is our favorite Amazon tablet there is, featuring a perfectly mid-sized 8-inch IPS display, easy access to Alexa, and a wide range of streaming services and apps, as well as an improved design from previous generations. It's a great pick for use as a device with which to work on the go, as well as one used at home by the whole household as a smart home device control interface.

This particular deal is for the 32GB storage configuration and for the version of the tablet that features lockscreen ads. It is available for all three of the tablet's color options, including Black, Emerald, and Hibiscus. If you need more storage or you don't want lockscreen ads, you can pay more to upgrade, though it's also worth noting that it comes with a microSD port for expandable storage of up to 1TB.

❌Skip this deal if: you'd rather upgrade to a Fire tablet with a larger screen or premium-level performance; you have a budget to spend more than $55 and you would consider switching from the HD 8 to the HD 8 Plus; you'd prefer to go with a different brand than Amazon's in-house lineup.

In our opinion, the Fire HD 8 is one of the best cheap tablets around, especially due to its super low price tag (and even more so with this deal), its up to 13 hours of battery life, and its ease-of-use as an Alexa and smart home device. Like most tablets, you can also access a wide range of apps, including a number of music, TV, and movie streaming services, along with some games and other applications, still. We also think the size of the 8-inch display is perfect, falling between Amazon's HD 10 and the HD 7 Kids tablets.

Cheap tablet season is quickly dawning upon us, and as such, Amazon has chopped the price of the Fire HD 10 tablet in half ahead of Black Friday. This brings the price down to just under $70, representing a certifiably good deal.

This particular deal is for the lockscreen ad version of the tablet, though you can also pay a little extra to have them removed. It comes with 32GB of storage—though you can upgrade to 64GB—and it also sports a decent-looking 10.1-inch LCD screen that makes it a good pick for sharing with your family, using as a smart home device, or just as a portable work option that won't break the bank.

Amazon also says the cheap Android tablet will get up to 13 hours of battery life in most cases, whether reading, web surfing, watching videos, or listening to music. The funny thing about tablets is that I was a fan of the form factor long before I made a living writing about them. I usually gravitate towards the flagship models, but I can also appreciate when a cheap tablet offers a well-rounded experience, bringing us to Amazon's Fire HD 10 tablet.

To be fair, I think the Fire HD 10 is a tough pill to swallow at its $139.99 retail price, but as the latest Prime Day comes to a close, I noticed that it's still on sale for 50% off. That brings the price down to just $70, and I don't know if there's a better tablet that you can get at that price. But you'll want to move quickly as there's not much time left before the deal expires.

✅Recommended if: You're on a budget and don't care about anything but saving money and having a way to consume as much Amazon content as you can. Or you're entrenched in the Amazon ecosystem and want a cheap way to replicate the Google Pixel Tablet experience.

❌Skip this deal if: You don't want to deal with Amazon constantly trying to get you to use its services, and you don't want to spend the time to get the Google Play Store running. It's also not the greatest option for those who want a powerful Android tablet to use for more than just watching shows or reading books.

Although it's running Amazon's tweaked version of Android, that's probably not much of an issue for a lot of people out there. It gives you quick and easy access to all of your Amazon services, while the Amazon App Store lets you download and install apps and games. And if you really wanted to, there are ways to install third-party launchers and even the Google Play Store, provided that you have the time and patience to do so.

The biggest downside to Amazon's lineup of tablets is that they're traditionally much less powerful compared to some of our other favorite cheap Android tablets. That said, the latest Fire HD 10 is about 25% faster than its predecessor while being equipped with 3GB of RAM and up to 64GB of expandable storage. Oh, and it's rated to last for up to 13 hours on a single charge, which is one of the benefits of using a chip that's optimized for this device.

At its core, the Fire HD 10 is essentially just a media consumption device, whether it be for books, TV shows, movies, or whatever else you want. It does have the added benefit of doubling as a smart home hub, so long as you are using smart devices within the Amazon Alexa ecosystem. However, you can get non-Alexa devices working too if you're like me and have already set up Home Assistant to interconnect all of the smart things in your home.

Just days ahead of the sale, the retailer is offering 36% off this Amazon Fire Max 11 "productivity" bundle, which comes with a first-party keyboard and stylus.

The Fire Max 11 is no doubt the best Fire tablet for work and play, in no small part due to its powerful CPU, large 11-inch display, and these first-party accessories, which are usually sold separately.

This particular deal is for the Fire Max 11 with 64GB of storage. While that isn't much, the tablet also comes with a microSD slot for those who want to add extra storage. Amazon says it offers up to 14 hours of battery life per charge, while it also includes both front and rear cameras.

✅Recommended if: you're looking for a powerful tablet with a long battery life that you can use for work, hardcore gaming, or other activities that require high-level performance; you want a tablet option that comes with a keyboard and/or stylus; you prefer a larger tablet screen of around 11 inches.

The Amazon Fire Max 11 is far and away the best out of the Fire tablet lineup, and it still offers a pretty fair price tag. From the 11-inch TUV display and the roughly 14-hour battery life, the tablet is designed to be suitable for a wide range of work tasks, while still being lightweight enough to be used on the go. With this bundle, you get a solid value with the inclusion of a keyboard and stylus, marking $133 in savings.

It also includes front and rear cameras, both 8MP, as well as dual-speaker audio, a fingerprint scanner, and USB-C audio capabilities. Unfortunately, it doesn't include a 3.5mm headphone jack, but that can be remedied using USB-C or Bluetooth.

This discount is for the Fire Max 11 bundle with just 64GB of storage, though it also includes a microSD slot for expandable storage of up to 1TB. Performance is backed by the powerful MediaTek MTK8188J processor, and it features split screen and other multitasking features supported by the included 4GB of RAM.

The bottom line is that, if you were already looking to cash in on a tablet, keyboard, and stylus combo bundle, this might be a good chance to do so.

Named for its touchscreen display of slightly over 10 inches, users get a Full HD resolution, around 13 hours of battery life, built-in Dolby Atmos speakers, and more—all for under $100 with this discount.

✅Recommended if: you're looking for a cheap tablet deal with easy access to Alexa voice assistance; you're planning on getting a tablet that can be used as a shared device, potentially including parental controls for family use; you want a tablet for under $100 that will still get the job done and offer decent battery life.

❌Skip this deal if: you're looking for a premium-level tablet and you need high-level performance or an AMOLED screen; you need your tablet to have high-res cameras for meetings, photos, or videos; you aren't otherwise an Alexa user and you might prefer a device compatible with another digital ecosystem, such as Samsung or Google.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 is our favorite Fire tablet for sharing, and there's more than one reason why. The latest generation of the lineup offers a decent 10.1-inch Full HD display, and either 32GB or 64GB storage options, both of which are on sale at the time of writing.

Plus, it comes with a built-in mic, speakers, and a 5MP selfie cam that's good enough for basic video calling (though it may not be the top pick for high-level professional meetings).

For those who need more than 64GB of storage, the HD 10 also comes with a microSD port that will allow users to get up to 1TB of expandable storage. Performance is backed by a 2x Arm Cortex-A76 Octa-Core processor and 3GB of RAM, which isn't much but should allow some multi-tasking.

Overall, it's not a bad pick for under $100, but if you can hold out for the official Prime Day sale, we can probably expect to see an even bigger discount.

Amazon seems to be busy gearing up for its annual "Devices and Services" event that is set to take place this fall. According to invites sent out to various tech platforms, Amazon's event is scheduled for September 30 in New York City, a popular destination for tech events this year.

The invite sent out to The Verge features a blue orb being connected by different Amazon devices, which directly hints at what we could expect coming out of the e-commerce company. The first section of the invite shows a screen with a wave, hints at updates to Amazon's Fire TV device or the Fire tablet. The top part of the invite features two images that show the blue glow of an Echo smart speaker's LED ring, next to it is Alexa's beaming blue light, both giving away subtle hints that upgrades are on the way.

And the most prominent and exciting part of the invite is an image that cleverly shows a Kindle with a snippet of text that says, "with the stroke of a pen," which essentially means that Amazon could be bringing handwriting and stylus support, to the next Kindle Scribe, and this new device could feature color e-ink, which would be such a game changer for those yearning to read books and comics in the color that they were published in.

There is no doubt that Amazon could be focusing on integrating its AI into its hardware ecosystem. Earlier this year, the company gave Alexa a much-needed upgrade by launching the more conversational and intuitive Alexa Plus, which can interact across different streaming, home devices, and shopping apps. While also effortlessly performing tasks like summarizing texts, emails, or complex topics. And it is but obvious that the new devices will showcase this upgraded version of Alexa, featuring new capabilities.

There has been recent chatter that Amazon is developing AR smart glasses to compete with Meta and Google. Two people with knowledge of Amazon's AR plans, and who have also worked on the wearable, said that Amazon’s glasses are internally codenamed "Jayhawk." It will have built-in microphones, speakers, a camera, and a full-color display only in one eye. We're hoping Amazon gives us a quick tease of these glasses as well.

Amazon skipped its big "Devices and Services" last year as it wanted to focus on bringing advancements to Alexa. It opted for a more low-key reveal for the Echo Show 21, a mini LED Fire TV, and a Fire TV Stick HD.

Amazon has launched its latest Fire tablet deal ahead of Prime Day 2025, chopping 39% off the price of the Amazon Fire Max 11. This tablet is powerful enough for both work and play, along with sporting a beautiful 11-inch display, which is the largest of the Fire series.

We picked the Fire Max 11 as the best Amazon Fire tablet for work and play, and in no small part due to its better-than-expected performance and gorgeous 11-inch display. Performance is backed by the powerful MediaTek MTK8188J CPU and 4GB of RAM, and it also comes with decent front and rear cameras. While this price is for the version with 64GB of storage, which could be limiting for some buyers, the microSD port lets you expand storage up to 1TB, or you can upgrade to 128GB.

It's also a great pick for those with other Alexa smart home devices, for families sharing a tablet, or for students and professionals who need to be able to work on the go.

While the Fire HD 8 is our pick for the best Amazon Fire tablet overall, those in need of a little better performance may want to consider going with this discount on the Fire HD 8 Plus.

Those in need of a good Amazon tablet deal that won't sacrifice performance are in luck for a limited time. This week, Amazon has cut 24% off the price of the Fire Max 11 tablet, which is our favorite tablet of the Fire lineup for either work or play use.

Backed by 4GB of RAM and a MediaTek MTK8188J CPU, the Fire Max 11 boasts a faster and smoother experience than other Fire tablets, and it also features 8MP rear and front cameras.

While this price point is for the 64GB, lockscreen ad configuration of the tablet, you can also pay a little more to remove ads or upgrade to 128GB.

Kids tablet deals come around every so often, and this entry comes just in time for summer trips with the family. While performance is nothing really to write home about, this is probably still the best pick out of the Fire tablet lineup for work purposes, backed by 4GB of RAM and a MediaTek MTK8188J that's decent.

The Amazon Fire Max 11 tablet is a decent little device, and especially for the price point compared to competitors. It's also our top pick for the best Amazon tablet for work and play, largely because its performance and display are a couple of steps ahead of the retailer's lower-end offerings.

We like the Fire Max 11 for its 11-inch screen, and the fact that Amazon says you can get up to 14 hours of battery life. It also offers easy access to Alexa voice commands for those who want to integrate the device into their Google-based smart home setup.

As for some of the downsides, the display only features a 60Hz refresh rate, and it also has just 4GB of RAM. Those who don't like Amazon's devices may also prefer going with a different brand, though its certainly worth thinking about at this price point.

Which Fire tablet storage size should you buy?

When searching for your new Amazon Fire tablet, you probably consider what storage size to get. After all, choosing the right storage option is crucial for having enough space for updates, games, and new reading material.

The exact number of storage left can be tricky to calculate since it depends on the Amazon Fire tablet you get. For example, the Amazon Fire Max 11 tablet has a different number of pre-installed apps than the Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet. Therefore, you have a different number with each tablet model. It's better to have more storage than you thought you would use than have to decide what to erase to free up some storage space.

The Fire HD 10 tablet comes in 32GB and 64GB variants, so spending a little extra to double the storage size is a no-brainer. It's also worth pointing out that Amazon updated its kid-friendly Amazon Fire devices. If 32GB seems right for your tech wizard, you can get the Fire 7 Kids Edition, which comes in 16GB and 32GB. You can also choose between the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro tablet and the Fire HD 10 Kids tablet, which offers 32GB of storage.

Things get trickier (and pricier) when you consider the newer Fire HD tablets. The Fire HD 8 model, which is still our pick for the best Amazon Fire tablet on the market right now, is available in 32GB and 64GB options, as are the Fire HD 8 Plus, Fire HD 10, and Fire HD 10 Plus. If you mainly stream on your tablet, then the 32GB options should be enough, and you might find the 64GB tablet to be more than you need.

Then there's the Fire Max 11, which comes in 64GB and 128GB storage sizes, the latter being the largest storage size ever offered in a Fire tablet. The Fire Max 11 also works well for productivity-centric workflows in addition to the usual media consumption. Even then, the 64GB option is more than sufficient for basic needs.

That's particularly nice for households that share Android devices, as you'll be able to use the same chargers for all your phones, tablets, and even Chromebooks.

Amazon's parental controls are also robust. The kids can have a completely walled experience, siloed off from the main tablet, where you, the parent, would have to share content that isn't already curated for young eyes. Best from Samsung

If you work and live within the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem, chances are you will want your child to stick with Samsung Galaxy tablets, as you're already familiar with the interface and style. The Galaxy Tab A9 Plus Kids Edition is the best option for children from the house of Samsung.

It's a bit more expensive than the standard Tab A9 Plus, but this Kids Edition features a tough outer shell, built-in kickstand, and it comes with stickers and three Crayo-pens. A Crayo pen is a short and stubby stylus made for the Tab A9 Plus, with a sturdy grip and a crayon-like design to attract children.

Running the latest Android 14 and with an octa-core processor, it has a sizeable 11-inch Full-HD TFT LCD screen, and a reasonable 64GB of internal storage for photos, videos, apps, and more, expandable up to 1TB via microSD card. The tablet comes in three brightly-colored casings, designed to withstand the odd bump and scuffs. At just 480g, it's easy to take with you and be held by tiny hands.

The tablet has a large 7,040mAh battery that promises long-lasting battery life, an 8MP rear and 5MP front cameras, and dual speakers. The best part is the Samsung Kids feature of One UI, which provides a safe and child-friendly way to use Android.

Best for multiple users

The Lenovo Tab M11 is the most recent entry, and it replaces the Tab M8 HD on our list. The updated specs make it great for kids and the whole family. Every family member can set up and access their account, including a special one just for kids using Google's Kids Space feature.

Parents can feel confident that their kids are accessing the web in a safe environment and enjoy full access to websites and other content through their accounts. You can always control what your kids can and cannot access using the Family Link app. It might not have a rugged body like some of the other tablets on our list, but it is dust and water-resistant, so it would be able to withstand accidental spills.

The MediaTek Helio G88 SoC offers enough grunt to power Sesame Street or Asphalt 9. It ships with Android 13, but it will be eligible for two more updates till Android 15. There's a decent 4GB of RAM, and you can opt for the 64GB or 128GB storage variant. The M11 has a massive battery, Type-C charging, and four speakers with Dolby Atmos. The large, 11-inch IPS display with a 90Hz refresh rate should be more than enough to keep everyone in the family happy.

How to choose

Should you buy an Android tablet or an iPad?

The choice between getting an Android tablet for kids or an iPad for your little one can be challenging. If your household is immersed in the Apple ecosystem with products like iPhones, Apple TVs, MacBooks, and so on, an iPad might be the better decision. You can quickly and seamlessly sync information across all devices. You can easily manage the iPad from your iPhone, such as using a single Apple ID, sending content, like photos or videos, from one device to another with features like AirDrop, and accessing apps through a familiar user interface.

However, iPads are generally more expensive than Android tablets, especially if you want to get a newer and larger-screened model. For teens, however, an iPad might make more sense. It's perfect for tasks like researching the web, composing documents with an add-on keyboard, making videos, or other creative content that might use Apple software or the improved iPad camera.

It's also worth mentioning that there's more to Android tablets than Android itself. While Amazon Fire tablets technically run Android, it is a specialized version that Amazon has built for its devices. This is why the kid versions of Amazon's tablets are so great — because of the software layer created from the ground up to make sure kids have fun and parents can get peace of mind. That software is the Amazon Kids+ to bring thousands of apps, games, movies, and more, all curated for kids.

An iPad might be the better decision for older kids and those who can be trusted with a more delicate tablet. However, if you're investing in an Apple tablet for the whole family, including the little ones, you might want to opt for an iPad with a rugged case.

Should you buy an Android tablet or a Chromebook?

Android tablets are designed to be held in hand, while Chromebooks look more like laptops with a hinge design and a fully attached keyboard. While you can use add-on Bluetooth keyboards with tablets, if your child uses a keyboard most of the time, a Chromebook might be the better option.

Chromebooks are better for typing, have bigger screens in most instances, and make perfect homework companions for kids. On the other hand, Android tablets are better for handheld use and activities like watching videos on the go, playing games or accessing apps, taking photos and videos, and other entertainment-based activities.

For older kids looking for a device to help with homework, a touchscreen Chromebook is better because it will also provide access to full desktop versions of websites and the full Chrome OS web browser. You can still add restrictions if necessary, and kids can still download apps from the Google Play Store. But they can also use programs and software that might not be compatible with a tablet and easily access content in the cloud.

However, with younger kids, it would make more sense to gift them an affordable Android tablet that is rugged with tons of parental controls and curated kid-friendly content. Plus, they can knock around, drop, bump, and scratch without worrying about damaging it.

Both are lightweight, great for watching videos and accessing apps. While there are some great Chromebooks for kids, Android tablets may be more appropriate for younger kids (say, those 8 and under), while pre-teens and teens will get much more use from a Chromebook if the purpose is as a homework aid and not just for fun and entertainment. Bottom line: Which Android tablet should you get for your kid?

No one knows your child like you do. You are the best predictor of what your child will enjoy and get the most use out of. You're also the one with the wallet.

But it's tough to look too far beyond the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition when it comes to the best Android tablet for kids. For this price, the build quality is excellent, all thanks to an aluminum chassis and low weight of around 610g.

Xiaomi claims that once fully charged, you could potentially get up to 83 days of standby time. Oh, and the tablet can also reverse charge other devices, which essentially makes it a powerbank.

Despite the budget-friendly price tag, Xiaomi didn't skimp out on ensuring the Pad 2 Pro is packed with features. Home screen+ is just one example, since it lets you actually use your Xiaomi smartphone from the tablet's screen. Plus, Xiaomi offers a first-party keyboard case, thus making the Pad 2 Pro a great productivity machine.

It's really no secret that Amazon's ability to provide bang-for-the-back tablets is unmatched, especially in the budget market. The Fire Max 11 sits at the top of the Fire tablet line-up, with a vibrant 11-inch display and up to 128GB of expandable storage. In fact, you can also add up to a 1TB microSD card, which should be more than enough for your needs.

Keep in mind that the Fire Max 11 runs an Amazon-centric version of Android, and it doesn't get access to the Google Play Store. That's not to say you can't sideload apps. You just have to take advantage of Amazon's own App Store or get the Play Store running if that's okay with you. And if you want max productivity, you'll have to purchase the Fire Max 11 accessories separately.

If you're looking for a versatile, yet cheap, Android tablet, the Lenovo Idea Tab is likely a good optionfor you. It features an 11-inch display with a 2.5K resolution, as well as a 90Hz refresh rate, all while being powered by the Dimensity 6300 SoC.

While a bit expensive than we would like, it's still pretty darn affordable and can be had for even cheaper during sales and other limited-time promotion. Try finding another Android tablet or iPad of this size at anywhere close to this price.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 (2023) is a large tablet with a Full HD display that features a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. It has up to 13 hours of battery life, which includes video watching, web browsing, and music listening — which we discovered was accurate through our hands-on with the device. The Fire HD 10 also get support for Dolby Atmos, dual stereo speakers, and a 3.5mm audio port. For photos and video calls, there's a 5MP camera each on the front and the back.

As its size would suggest, the Fire HD 10 comes with more storage (up to 64GB) that is expandable up to 1TB, and it has the best processor in the Fire Tablet line. You can use that storage and processing speed to watch hours of movies and TV shows and playing mobile games on that Full HD screen is a delight.

While the 2021 edition of the Amazon Fire HD 10 was a bit heavy for some at just over a pound (16.4oz), the newest 2023 version is a bit lighter at 15.29 ounces. It's a fantastic device for reading books, newspapers, magazines, or even websites — particularly if you need or want to enable a larger font because there's just much more screen space to view your content.

What is an Amazon Fire Tablet?

While all of the tablets on this list are technically running a version of Android, it's not the same flavor or experience that you'll find on something like the Google Pixel Tablet or the much more powerful Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra.

That's because Amazon Fire Tablets use a modified version, or a fork, of Android known as Fire OS. Both Fire HD 10 Kids 2023 and Fire HD 10 Kids Pro 2023 come bundled with a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+ that renews automatically. Amazon recently updated almost all the devices in its Fire tablet lineup, ranging from the bare-bones, impulse-buy Fire 7 to the more expensive and immersive Fire HD 10. Even the "Kids Edition" versions of these devices were upgraded in lockstep with the regular models. 

However, Fire fans like myself have been waiting nearly two years for an update to the HD 8, which I've often called the Goldilocks of tablets for its "just right" blend of price, performance, and value. Now that the Fire HD 8 has been updated along with a more premium Fire HD 8 Plus also available, what is someone who's in the market for a tremendous mid-size tablet supposed to do?

Amazon Fire HD 8 vs. 8 Plus: Nitpicking the differences

Since this is the first time we've seen separate Fire tablets in the same product line (aside from the Kids Edition versions), it's a good idea to check out all the differences (and similarities) between these two tablets.

As you can see from the above table, there isn't a whole lot that separates these two versions of the Fire HD 8. They look and feel the same, almost weigh the same, and even share accessories such as cases and covers. The most significant differences are on the inside (RAM, charging capabilities, and rear camera), and the color choices are also different. But that's really about it.

Amazon Fire HD 8 vs. 8 Plus: What improvements do these devices share?

Amazon didn't make a ton of substantial changes to this iteration of the HD 8, but we found the iterative changes it did make (to both models) to be welcome improvements during our Amazon Fire HD 8 (2022) review.

For starters, it increased the battery life from 10 to 12 hours, which doesn't sound like much, but can make a significant difference on long road trips or flights (and if you're at home, it just means that you can wait that much longer before charging it again!). Amazon also brought USB-C to the lineup (first introduced with the 2019 Fire HD 10) so hopefully, we'll start to see that on all of the company's new devices moving forward.

Amazon updated the color options of the HD 8 to better match the color choices of the Fire 7 (2022), as well as improved the processor(s) for better performance. The Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 8 Plus also have more RAM (2GB and 3GB, respectively), and even though the 32/64GB storage options remain, microSD expandability now allows up to 1TB expansion cards to be used. This makes these devices great for storing movies, music, games, and more for extended trips or when you're in areas with low network coverage.

This marks the first time a Fire tablet has had the front-facing camera on the side in a horizontal or landscape orientation, and I, for one, think that was a wise decision. I know that I tend to hold my tablets that way when trying to get a better view of the content on the screen, so it makes sense that this would be a better experience for video chatting with others. Also, if you want to use a Bluetooth keyboard, landscape orientation makes a lot more sense.

Finally, Amazon is introducing a distraction-free gaming experience called Game Mode, which blocks notifications from intruding on your gameplay. And the best part is that it's on by default and comes on automatically when you launch a game. You can always turn it off from the settings if you don't really mind the interruptions, but why would you?

Amazon Fire HD 8 vs. Plus: What does the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus offer?

2020 marked the first time Amazon tried to create a more premium tier in its Fire tablets with the Fire HD 8 Plus, and has continued it with the 2022 models. On the surface, the Plus version doesn't really look any different than the "regular" Fire HD 8, aside from only being available in a Gray color. No, for the HD 8 Plus, it's what's on the inside that counts.

For starters, the HD 8 Plus comes with 50% more RAM (3GB) than the HD 8 (2GB), an addition that should help games and movies appear more fluid and make it future-proof for longer than other Fire tablets. The HD 8 Plus can also charge faster via its included 9W adapter, which makes it great for those who want to top off the battery more quickly, particularly before heading out for a road trip.

Speaking of charging, the real selling point of the HD 8 Plus is that it is now capable of Qi wireless charging. Amazon is selling a unique Wireless Charging Dock, but it also works with some of the best wireless chargers. Using the Amazon dock means that you can quickly put your Fire HD 8 into Show Mode and leave it like that without having an ugly wire sticking out or worrying about the battery running out. Basically, this turns the tablet into an Echo Show, but it's an Echo Show that you can pick up and take with you anywhere.

Amazon Fire HD 8 vs. 8 Plus: Which should you buy?

As a fan of Amazon's devices, I was thrilled to see that the Fire HD 8 tablet was finally updated after two years. These are two of the best Android tablets on the market, so I was also happy to see Amazon introducing more premium features in the HD 8. Both versions of the tablet are great options, but the HD 8 is the way to go for most people. Sure, it doesn't have wireless charging, nor does it charge as quickly as the HD 8 Plus, but I don't think that matters to most Fire tablet customers. Yeah, they're "nice-to-haves," but they're not "need-to-haves." And when these devices aren't on sale, there's about a $20+ difference in price, meaning that most people will be just fine with the base version.

That said, even at its max storage capacity and with accessories such as the Wireless Charging Dock, the Fire HD 8 Plus is over $150 cheaper than the cheapest iPad, and thus, is still an excellent value for a personal or family entertainment device. Add the fact that with the wireless dock, it can essentially become a full-time Echo Show replacement, and you get two fantastic Amazon devices for the price of one. Not a bad deal at all!

Amazon's Fire tablets are possibly the best tablets you can buy for the money. When you compare the Fire HD 8 vs. 10, you're getting incredible affordability and a ton of value in both. They run on Amazon's Fire OS and get their apps from the Amazon Appstore rather than the Google Play Store. They have full access to Amazon Music, Books, Video, Movies, Alexa, and everything else Amazon does, which, as it turns out, means you can do quite a lot.

Buying one of these tablets is a no-brainer for the budget-minded. The only tough part is deciding which one to choose.

Amazon Fire HD 8 vs. Fire HD 10: Value propositions

As you'd expect, the larger Fire HD costs more than, the smaller one, but there's more to break down here. At the top-end device of Amazon's excellent Fire tablet lineup, the Fire HD 10's display isn't just bigger; it's denser, with a 1920x1200 resolution versus the smaller HD 8's 1280x800 resolution. Both offer the same 32GB and 64GB storage options and are expandable when using one of the best microSD cards for Fire tablets.

Specs aside, we found that during the review of both the Fire HD 8 (2022) and Fire HD 10 (2021) offer relatively similar software experiences, with both tablets running on Amazon's Fire OS interface rather than a more traditional build of Android. You get all of your apps from the Amazon Appstore rather than the Google Play Store, which means a more Amazon-centric ecosystem.

That's not necessarily a bad thing; both tablets come with unlimited cloud storage through Amazon, and Amazon hosts a bevy of excellent, exclusive content on its video services.

The OS is fueled by Alexa, who enables you to use voice commands to navigate the software and interact with the thousands of skills available. The digital assistant can now be called upon no matter what state the tablet is in, even if it's asleep.

Both tablets feature Show Mode, which gives you a visual representation of some of the things that Alexa helps you with. This includes showing the latest news reports, calendar appointments, weather updates, and viewing any smart security cameras you may have connected. However, the new split-screen function in the HD 10 makes multi-tasking a cinch as you can access and view two apps at once, like staying on top of social media updates while reading an article or watching a movie.

Amazon Fire HD 8 vs. Fire HD 10: Which should you buy?

When choosing between the Fire HD 8 vs. 10, you should think about what you'll be doing most with it. If you mainly want an e-reader for Amazon's enormous Kindle library, with the occasional video or music playback, the Fire HD 8's smaller form factor may be the better choice. It's half the price of the HD 10, and aside from weaker speakers and a slightly slower processor, you're not missing much.

If instead, you plan on watching a lot of videos and movies on your tablet, the larger Fire HD 10 is the better choice. The larger, denser display, strengthened with aluminosilicate glass, provides a much better viewing experience, and you'll appreciate the louder speakers. It's more expensive than the HD 8, but it's still a bargain compared to virtually every Android tablet on the market. And it's smaller, lighter, and brighter than the previous-generation 2019 edition HD 10 tablet.

No matter which tablet you decide on, you'll be getting a surprisingly great device for the money. They're both great for media consumption and light gaming, whether you're buying for yourself, your kids, or as a gift.

What are the best Amazon Fire HD 10 cases?

Amazon's Fire series tablets may not be the most feature-laden pieces of technology in the market, but they still manage to strike the right balance between performance and affordability, which is why they continue to be some of the best Android tablets available out there. In fact, the 2021 version of Amazon Fire HD 10 is a fairly capable device that can do a whole lot more than what its price tag might have you believe.

Whether you're planning to get the newest Fire HD 10 or Fire HD 10 Plus soon or have had one of the older models with you for quite some time, it's important to protect your investment. This is why we've done all the hard work and rounded up some of the best Fire HD 10 cases on offer. You might be surprised by the title of this review, especially if you're accustomed to thinking that Amazon's Fire 7 tablet is the actual best cheap Android tablet. But I would argue that the improvements that Amazon has made to the Fire HD 8 over the past couple of years have actually been enough to dethrone the Fire 7.

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2022): Price and availability

The Amazon Fire HD 8 was announced in September 2022, alongside the updated Fire HD 8 Plus and Fire HD 8 Kids tablets. Following the announcement, the Fire HD 8 was officially released in October 2022, with a starting retail price of $99 for the 32GB variant, and $129 for 64GB of storage. Additionally, Amazon is offering the Fire HD 8 in three different colors — Black, Denim, and Rose — and you can purchase the tablet with, or without, Lock Screen Ads.

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2022): What you'll like

What is there to say about a tablet that has been slightly upgraded but is largely the same as its predecessor? The Fire HD 8 serves a specific purpose, as it's a solid and cheap Android tablet with a screen that's "good enough" to enjoy the never-ending swath of streaming content that we have at our disposal.

One could argue that Amazon didn't even need to go and update the Fire HD 8, but as we all know, technology is cyclical and if the company could find a reason to release an "updated" device to help make some more money, that's what it was going to do. Cynicism aside, the Fire HD 8 is probably the best tablet for anyone who wants more than what a traditional Amazon Kindle has to offer and doesn't care about not having access to the Play Store.

Battery life is just as good as you would expect, reaching the 13 hours of advertised battery life with ease. It's a bit of a surprise given that the screen and processor have both been upgraded, but the software is still the same so it's just not going to be as power-hungry as something like the Galaxy Tab S8. 

Of course, your mileage will vary depending on whether you plan to use this for Amazon Luna game streaming, watching videos, or both. But it'll still easily last you an entire day, and probably quite a bit longer if you don't use it all of the time.

Speaking of watching videos, something else that I'm really happy to see Amazon stick with is the ability to use a microSD card with its various Fire Tablets. Expandable storage is one "feature" that shouldn't have been removed from the best Android phones or tablets, and even though you can get a 1TB microSD card for the same price as the Fire HD 8, there's no such thing as not having too much storage. 

In the same vein, there are two different configurations available, as you can opt for either 32GB or 64GB with the Fire HD 8, which is still probably more than enough on its own. But you can always throw a microSD card in your tablet if you want to enjoy watching some movies without streaming.

I've also become quite a fan of the decision to include Show Mode with the Fire HD 8. As I recently mentioned in my Fire TV Cube (2022) review, my discovery of the Google Nest Alexa Skill has made it easy to check my various security cameras without actually having a Nest Hub on my desk in the home office. 

Show Mode gives you essentially the same experience you would find if you were to use an Echo Show 8, but on a tablet. It's also probably similar to what we should expect to see from the Pixel Tablet, seamlessly flipping between a tablet and a smart home display depending on your current needs.

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2022): What you won't

Even Amazon's high-end tablets like the Fire HD 10 aren't really designed to be super performant, and while the company can slap a new processor in it in order to claim "30% faster performance," it's still just a cheap Android tablet. The new "hexacore" processor in the Fire HD 8 isn't going to win any awards or blow anyone away, and that's fine, for the most part at least.

It gets the job done, but I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't at least point out that it was a bit frustrating that the interface felt a bit sluggish at times. It's not something that most people will probably even notice, but in one instance, I tried to fire up Luna and play a bit of Dirt 5 only to feel like the tablet was just being overwhelmed with too much going on at one time. This was just a one-off occurrence, but it's still something worth pointing out considering how popular cloud gaming has become.

As for the aforementioned gaming, we really need an easier way to install and use the Play Store on these tablets. Or, at the very least, it would be beneficial for Google and Amazon to play nice and make it so I don't have to buy multiple versions of games just because I have to use the Amazon App Store instead of the Play Store. Unfortunately, that ship has long sailed and it's really annoying. Amazon has been making improvements to its own App Store, likely thanks to the ability to install Android apps on Windows, but I still would prefer to have all my apps come from one centralized "store" for everything, kind of like GOG for Windows games.

Lastly, while we're happy to have USB-C onboard for charging, there's no "fast charging" to be found on the Fire HD 8. Amazon claims it will take you about five hours to go from 0-100%, and I'm just hoping that we see future Fire Tablets released with the ability to charge faster than an iPhone with a Lightning connector. And unlike the Fire HD 8 Plus, you can't use the Fire HD 8 with a wireless charger, so you'll probably want to make sure you plug in the Fire HD 8 overnight when it runs out of juice.

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2022): The competition

At first glance, it may not seem as though there's much competition for the Fire HD 8 (2022), besides Amazon's own Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 Plus. The former is something that you probably shouldn't consider unless you really want the cheapest of the cheap. But the latter is much more intriguing, as the Fire HD 8 Plus includes wireless charging (great for Show Mode), has more RAM, faster wired charging, and is only $20 more.

The next closest competitor would have to be Walmart's .onn 8-inch Tablet, which offers the same screen size, same storage options, and more colors, all while being $20 less expensive. Plus, you'll also enjoy a traditional Android experience, complete with having access to the Play Store as opposed to the Amazon App Store.

Outside of those two specific options, your best bet, if you're in the market for an 8-inch tablet that won't break the bank, would be to keep an eye out for sales on some of the other best cheap Android tablets. Lenovo's Tab M8 is getting a bit long in the tooth but can be found for the same $100 price as the Fire HD 8, while the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite has a larger 8.7-inch screen but gives you a much more premium build and there have been sales knocking it down to around $110.

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2022): Should you buy it?

You should buy this if:

• You want the best cheap Android tablet.
• You want a tablet that can double as an Alexa smart display.
• You want a tablet that has long-lasting battery life.
• You don't care about not having access to the Google Play Store.

You shouldn't buy this if:

• You want to be able to multitask.
• You are looking for a tablet that includes wireless charging.
• You want to have access to your library of purchased content from the Google Play Store.

Reading through this review, it might sound like I'm not too excited about the Fire HD 8, but that couldn't be further from the truth. For me, the Fire HD 8 has replaced the Fire 7 as the best cheap Android tablet that you should get, even if you're on a strict sub-$50 budget.

It sucks not having access to the Play Store, and the performance "improvements" are negligible, at best. But it's definitely a better overall tablet than Amazon's cheapest option and a fantastic choice for those who just want a media consumption device that can be thrown in pretty much any bag.

Even if you think that the Fire HD 8 is overshadowed by the Fire HD 8 Plus, that tablet's only $20 more and offers even better value, not everyone cares about having a tablet transform into a smart display. That's where the Fire HD 8 fits in and does a damn good job of it in a market that is primarily saturated with outdated products or those from brands you don't know.

Though the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids isn't the least expensive tablet option from the company, that would be the Fire 7 Kids; it is currently $40 more but offers far more value in its capabilities which is why it is one of our favorite Android tablets for kids. Regardless of which Amazon tablet you choose for your child, it will have the same software options. Still, the differences come down to screen size and the internal hardware that will ultimately affect the device's overall performance.

The Fire HD 8 Kids has an 8-inch high-definition screen that looks great and is the perfect size for younger kids. The display's clarity and size will be helpful as your child begins to read, and thanks to the rubberized foam case, there's plenty of grip to hang onto the tablet. For those times when it's best to prop up the screen to watch a fun educational show, the built-in kickstand will get ready. Best for older kids

In 2023, Amazon updated its Fire HD 10 tablet, which meant that the kid's version got a bump too. This update means the Amazon HD 10 Kids Pro is still the best tablet choice for older kids. The inclusion of the Pro moniker brings new case options and a different dashboard for kids when using the device and expanded content options.

Starting on the outside of the tablet, you have a 10.1-inch full-HD display with the new, slimmed-down case. The case is less bulky than the standard case of other Amazon Fire Kids tablets and has two fun design choices. The case has a built-in kickstand with a cutout for the USB-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Fire HD 10 Kids Pro has the most power of all the kid's tablets from Amazon, with enough horsepower to handle any task your child throws at it. While it only ships with 32GB of internal storage, it can be expanded with up to 2TB with a microSD card.

Aside from the new case options, the Pro also comes with a new layout and content library than the other Fire Kids tablets. Your child will be able to access more apps from the Amazon App Store and a filtered version of the internet. But, you'll still have complete control over those apps and the internet via the Parental Dashboard, as new app installs and websites will require your approval. The only thing really missing that older kids may want are Google Play Services, but nearly everything else is ready and waiting.

Best kids speaker

If you are looking for a smart speaker for your child, the two most important things are parental controls and kid-specific content. Let us add a third, and that's how it looks because — why not? At its core, the Amazon Echo Dot Kids is just like the regular Echo Dot with Clock in terms of sound quality, which is pretty good, and access to Alexa. Both of these picked up larger speakers in 2022, along with a host of other features. The regular Echo Dot doesn't get a free year of Amazon Kids+, which is very important.

That's because it will allow you to set some safety nets around what the speaker will respond with and what your child can access with Alexa. You'll also be able to set quiet times for the speaker so your child can't talk to Alexa when it's supposed to be bedtime.

As for that content, Amazon has done a great job of creating fun experiences for kids with audiobooks, interactive games, and more with characters they love. Not to mention the new Amazon Echo Dot Kids features two new cute Dragon and Owl designs that will look great in kids' playrooms and bedrooms. 

Best kids smart display

In many cases, the inclusion of a display on a smart speaker is super beneficial. Aside from having a larger visual cue that the speaker has heard you, it also provides added context to Alexa's responses. Then there are all the photos, videos, and potential video calls possible because of the screen.

The thought of having a connected camera in your child's room can be concerning, but Amazon does include a physical shutter on the Echo Show 5 Kids to block it and a physical on/off switch for the microphone, as well. If you choose to leave it open, you can check in on your child through the parental controls and have video chats. You can set up what contacts are accessible for calls to or from the speaker on the parental dashboard.

The screen gives even more ways for your child to enjoy the content from Amazon Kids+. Whether from fun animations in the clock or videos, the colorful Echo Show 5 Kids is a great choice if you are looking for an Echo with a screen for your child.

The biggest downside is that you can't unplug it and take it with you throughout the house. There no internal battery, so it just shuts off when it's not plugged in, meaning it can't replace a tablet.

Best Kindle for kids

The Kindle Paperwhite Kids is the perfect purchase if your child loves to read. As with every other Kids edition product from Amazon, it gets a full year of Amazon Kids+. My child loved having access to thousands of books, and with the excellent display on the e-reader, they will all look great.

Compared to regular tablets, the display technology used on Kindles is far better for the eyes, has better clarity, and means exceptional battery life. With up to 10-weeks of use between charges, your child will be able to read all day and night. Thanks to the adjustable backlight, that nighttime reading will be more comfortable because of the warmer tone.

The Kindle Paperwhite Kids comes with a two-year worry-free warranty, IPX8 water resistance, and fun case options to keep it protected. Amazon Kids+ also provides you with control over what content your child will have access to, along with the ability to see what your child is reading. With OpenDyslexic available, a font that some people with dyslexia prefer, the Kindle Paperwhite Kids is an excellent choice for even more kids.

Best accessory

If you are looking for a way to add some fun to your child's space, then the Echo Glow is a great way to do that. Its spherical design and matte material give off a soft glow to any room. With over 16-million colors available, you'll be able to get just the right shade of blue, red, purple, or any other color.

Aside from being a simple, smart light that works perfectly with your Echo devices, it also can help act as a visual cue for timers. For example, the Echo Glow will change colors by setting a rainbow timer as the timer counts down to help your child stay on task. It also can be set up to help your child wake in the morning by gradually getting brighter.

There are even fun modes like a campfire, color flow, firetruck, underwater, and more that your child can request from Alexa. The Echo Glow isn't a standalone device, so you will need to set up control for your child to access it from an Echo device. But, you can control it via your Alexa app on your phone if you want.

Amazon announced the latest Amazon Fire HD 8 lineup, including kid models, in September 2022. Both the standard Fire HD 8 Kids and Pro versions retail for $149.99. The tablets are available through Best Buy, Kohl's, Amazon, and more. The device is black, but it's the case colors stand out. The case options for the regular Fire HD 8 Kids are Blue, Purple, Disney Princess, and Disney Mickey. As for the Pro model's slimmer case, the choices are Cyber Sky, Rainbow Universe, and Hello Teal.

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2022) review: What's good

As some of the best Android tablets for kids, Amazon's Fire tablets excel in many ways. Notably in price, content, parental controls, and warranty. As a parent of two young children, it is a constant balancing act to allow them the chance to explore technology and, at the same time, protect them. For about three years now, the fantastic Amazon Fire Kids tablets have been a go-to for my family.

In 2021, we reviewed the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro, and it was among the first kids' devices from Amazon to carry the Pro moniker. While Pro models don't offer any difference in hardware compared to the regular options, they do possess some meaningful differences for both kids and parents, depending on the situation. I go into more detail about those differences here if you want to learn about them.

Getting into the new Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro is largely the same device as before. It picked up some upgrades in the internal hardware to offer improved performance. While most kids using these tablets aren't looking for dips in performance, they will appreciate a reduction in hiccups while playing games and other tasks.

What will be noticed are the fun new cases. When Amazon introduced the Kids Pro models last year, they offered a more mature-looking and feeling case. Before, the only official cases from Amazon for kid's tablets were the super-protective, bulky foam cases. The Pro cases are much thinner yet still protective and offer fun designs on the back. The 2022 models get all new designs with Cyber Sky, Rainbow Universe, and Hello Teal. My son and I were sent to the Rainbow Universe for testing.

While my oldest has been using the 10-inch Pro model since last fall, my 7-year-old was using the standard 8-inch model from 2020. So, he was excited to test a newer model. Though his excitement was mostly because it was something new, it quickly became genuine as he began using it. 

In asking what he liked about the new Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2022), he told me about the lighter case and how things were arranged on the screen. The difference in UI layout is due to the tablet being in the "Pro" mode. It is a layout that is more similar to what adults may be familiar with on the grown-up models. 

The Pro model's UI provides better-defined categories for titles on the device. As my son's reading skills are improving, he doesn't like the screen being cluttered with all of the content he likes from Amazon Kids+. Grouping into categories allows him to have more control in finding what he wants. Yet, the interface still does a great job of bringing up titles he might be interested in.

Aside from the difference in the interface and case, the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2022) gets access to an even more expansive library of content. With last year's introduction of the Pro models, Amazon also began offering a new internet browser experience that lets kids browse pre-selected sites, and lets parents whitelist specific sites too. But, because the tablet is tied to Amazon Kids+, parents still have loads of options to set the device up as best for their child.

We have a full breakdown of what Amazon Kids+ offers in this guide, but a quick explainer is it's a software layer that unlocks over 20,000 apps, games, videos, books, and more that are all curated for kids. Parents can choose an age range for their child, and the software will automatically offer titles in that range. 

Along with the content, there are multiple levels of parental controls to not only pick the what apps your child has access to, but also how and when. For example, you can require 30 minutes of reading before games are allowed. You can set do not disturb times and also a time limit for device usage. 

Something else my son told me that he liked was that it had more games for him to play. While it may seem that way to him, the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2022) offers the exact same library as his older model, but as part of the Pro family, it provides a different discovery method.

The other benefit of purchasing an Amazon Fire Kids tablet is that you get a year free of Amazon Kids+. After the first year, the service is $7.99/mo for non-Prime members and $4.99 for those that are. If you go the annual route, it is $79/yr or $48/yr. Aside from the discounted Amazon Kids+, the tablet also gets a very valuable two-year worry-free warranty. This means that for any reason the tablet breaks or stops working, Amazon will replace it.

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2022) review: What's not good

Much like previous Amazon Fire Kid tablets, there isn't much not to like here. Rather the same complaints remain. Largely that Google Play Services is missing. While most younger kids, even those ready for a Pro edition, likely won't care, many are familiar with apps like YouTube and some games only offered on the Play Store. But, with Amazon Kids+, as the parent, you can allow access to YouTube, and your child could then access it via the web browser.

The other ding of the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2022) and other Fire Kids tablets is that Amazon continues only to offer 32GB of internal storage. Sure, you can pick up a really good microSD card to expand the storage. But it seems silly not to at least offer a 64GB model for the Pro versions.

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2022) review: Competition

It's sad to say this, but when it comes to affordable tablets for kids which offer a massive library of kid-appropriate content and have excellent parental controls, there really isn't much competition outside of other Amazon Fire tablets. 

If your child would benefit from a larger device, then you can opt for the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids or Pro model if your child is ready for it. If you want to save some cash, check out the new Amazon Fire 7 Kids I reviewed earlier this year. It is a fantastic entry-level device that offers the same software benefits from Amazon Kids+ as the pricier models but at a more affordable cost.

While there are options outside of Amazon to look at, many of them that are going to be in a similar price range offer subpar performance. Not to mention nowhere near the same size library for kids or level of parental controls. Samsung recently announced its first tablet built for kids, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite Kids Edition.

Google has partnered with a few brands to offer an environment for kids to safely explore tablets called Kids Space. In my testing, it is an OK option. But isn't nearly as full-featured as what Amazon Kids+ offers in either content or parental controls. I've heard that Google is continuing to build this platform out and, in time, could be a contender. But for now, Amazon is the clear leader in the kids' tablet space.

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2022) review: Should you buy it?

You should buy this if...

• Your child is six or older and is ready for a more mature interface on their tablet.
• Your child is using an older device that is slowing down.
• You want a tablet for your child with excellent content and equally good parental controls.

You shouldn't buy this if...

• You're on a tight budget.
• You need the device to offer Google Play Services.
• You don't want to buy a microSD card for additional storage.

As I said in the competition section, there isn't anything better than Amazon's lineup regarding kids' tablets. The Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2022) continues that legacy with improved performance that runs nearly any app asked of it. The more mature case and UI layout satisfy even the most experienced child. Thanks to Amazon Kids+, there are a lot of titles available for kids of all ages, and the safety controls ensure that parents can have peace of mind.

But the tablet isn't cheap. So if you are on a tight budget, you might consider picking up the Fire 7 Kids. The lack of Google Play Services might be a bummer in specific circumstances, but Amazon's content library is vastly better than it was even a few years ago. While the tablet only offers 32GB of internal storage, adding a microSD card is nice. So if you have a child that isn't ready for a big 10-inch display but is prepared to handle a "big-kid" tablet, the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2022) is just the ticket.

At first glance, it looks like the only difference between the Amazon Fire HD 8 and Fire 7 is the screen size, but there's quite a bit more going on here. The Fire HD 8 also has a higher resolution screen, a bigger battery, a faster processor, more default storage, stereo speakers, and a generally more modern appearance. Even so, there is a need for the cheaper tablet for light users and those looking for a good option for kids.

Amazon Fire 7 vs. Fire HD 8: Do you need the bigger screen?

An inch doesn't seem like a huge deal when it comes to screen size but the 8-inch display on the Fire HD 8 feels much more significant thanks to a higher resolution and smaller bezels. Bezels, the black space between the edge of the screen and the edge of the tablet, are much larger on the Fire 7 making the tablet look and feel a bit more dated despite its 2022 release date.

The Fire HD 8 has a screen resolution of 1280x800 compared to the 1024x600 resolution of the 7. Again, the difference isn't too massive but the 1280x800 canvas of the HD 8 can display common 720p video resolutions without the need for scaling. Scaling a video can make it seem blurrier than it actually is.

For HD video viewing, the Fire HD 8 will be a much better experience overall.

Amazon Fire 7 vs. Fire HD 8: How much better is the hardware?

The Fire HD 8 has a faster CPU with a hexa-core CPU that will help it keep up better with modern apps, though both models only come with 2GB of RAM. The Fire HD 8 also comes with double the storage by default at 32GB compared to 16GB on the Fire 4. That being said, both models can be expanded with a microSD card so you can start with the small version and upgrade as needed.

The new hardware also gives both tablets a solid battery life boost. Our Fire 7 review noted impressive battery life with up to 10 hours on a charge. The Fire HD 8 comes in a bit higher with 13 hours on a charge. This stat is even more important when you note that neither tablet supports fast charging. That means four hours to charge the smaller tablet and five hours for the larger model.

Finally, the Fire HD 8 has dual speakers and Dolby Atmos support making it the better pick for watching videos or playing games.

Amazon Fire 7 vs. Fire HD 8: Pick the right version

Amazon gives you a few choices before checkout and they can have a significant impact on your experience. From a technical standpoint, the color of the table is a small issue but if you've got more than one kid, you'll be happy to hear that you can get both tablets in black, rose, or denim colors so your kids can have their own color.

You also get the choice of whether or not you want lockscreen ads. While these ads are not terribly distracting, some people will be happy to know they can buy their way out of them by paying $15 more for their tablet. If you're not sure if you care, you can start with the ad-supported model and remove the ads later on if you wish.

Amazon Fire 7 vs. Fire HD 8: Which should you buy?

If you need more performance than these options can give you, one of the other best Android tablets may be a better pick for you. Still, Amazon's options can't be beaten when it comes to price. If you're buying it for a kid or teen that might lose or break it, the low price will make it hurt a little less.

As you can see, both of these tablets are excellent low-cost options, and both have their pros and cons. You can even get the Fire 7 Kids version with extra protection. If you can only afford the cheaper tablet, it's still a good option that should work well for basic apps and web usage.

Yet, if you're looking for a decent, low-cost tablet to consume media, browse the web, check your email, and even play some games on, the Fire HD 8 is the one to get. While it costs about twice as much, the extra performance and the better screen are worth every penny.

If you've got kids, you know they love tablets just as much as they love throwing their toys on the floor, so you want one that's tough and cheap. Amazon's Fire 7 Tablets are a great solution with the Kids variant even coming with a thick plastic case. The standard tablet could be a better pick for older kids with its thinner case and more mature colors, but for a toddler or particularly destructive kid, the Fire 7 Kids is a great choice and can often be found on sale.

Fire Tablet 7 vs. Kids Edition: Adult-focused vs. kid-proof

The Amazon Fire 7 Tablet is one of the best Fire tablets and an all-around great buy for just about anyone looking for an inexpensive, entertainment-focused tablet — and it picked up a nice set of updates in 2022. It's capable enough to keep the kids entertained while not costing enough to pull your hair out if it gets accidentally destroyed. 

You can also get all the (non-Google) major content services, along with a dedicated kids mode to keep those little fingers from buying a new dollhouse on your Amazon account. While there is now a parallel line of Fire Kids Pro tablets for older children, the Fire 7 Kids Edition is the one to get for children under six years old.

However, you may notice that when hovering your mouse or your finger over that Buy Now button that there's both a regular Fire 7 Tablet and a Fire 7 Kids Edition, so what gives?

Fire Tablet 7 vs. Kids Edition: Spec comparison

Spec-for-spec, there isn't much difference between these Fire Tablets. In fact, under the hood, they're basically the same device. However, it all comes down to the extras.

Price is one of the main differences. During my colleague Andrew Myrick's Amazon Fire 7 Tablet review, that even with the slight price hike it is still a fantastic deal. I resonated with the same in my review of the Fire 7 Kids tablet. While the Fire 7 Kids is more often than not more expensive the than base model, frequent sales can bring the prices much closer.

One thing to note is that the Fire 7 is available with ads on the lockscreen and without. If you don't want to see an ad every time you pick up your tablet, you'll need to cough up $15 more, but even at this price, the tablet is still a good value.

So what do you get for that price difference? Well, you get a few features that may be very important to parents, particularly parents of younger children. For starters, the Fire 7 Kids Edition comes with a free year of Amazon Kids+, ordinarily $5 per month for Amazon Prime members or up to $48 per year for a family plan (prices are higher for non-Prime members). 

Amazon Kids+ provides enhanced parental controls and puts the device in a kid-friendly mode with a different user interface and tons of content that is specifically geared toward younger children. With this Amazon Kids+ content, you won't have to continually buy new games or shows to entertain your little ones. Amazon Kids+ also prohibits children from accessing social media apps and prevents them from using Alexa. Amazon does acknowledge that you know your kids best, so you, as a parent, do have the ability to exit Amazon Kids+ mode with a passcode. Because of this kid-specific setting, the Fire 7 Kids is one of the best tablets for kids — period.

The Fire 7 Kids Edition also comes with a durable kid-proof case that will protect the tablet from all kinds of mishaps. That case alone would cost you around $25 if you were to purchase it separately. Additionally, the Fire 7 Kids Edition includes a two-year worry-free guarantee. The regular Fire 7 Tablet only comes with a 90-day limited warranty, and if you wanted to extend it to two years, it would cost you an extra $10 or so. With the way kids treat their toys and, well, everything else, you can easily see the value in this included service.

Fire Tablet 7 vs. Kids Edition: Just in case

The kid-proof case that is included with the Fire 7 Kids Edition Tablet certainly offers excellent protection, is friendly to small hands, and still allows easy access to all the ports and buttons. But if you have a child that's ready for a larger tablet but you don't want to jump up to the 10-1-inch Fire HD 10 Kids, then consider the Fire HD 8 Kids instead. Not only is it larger, but it also offers improved performance over the Fire 7 tablets.

However, you don't have to get Amazon's kid-proof case to protect your Fire 7 Tablet from the kids. There are a number of other cases available at various prices, though, that will also do the trick. So if you want to save a bit of money, buy the regular Fire 7 Tablet and pick up another protective case for less than the one that is included with the Kids Edition.

Fire Tablet 7 vs. Kids Edition: Which should you buy?

If you're purely buying a tablet for your kids, spend the extra money and get the Kids Edition. It's worth the investment, not least for that worry-free two-year warranty. It's also a single purchase that comes 100% child-equipped, with that tough-as-hell case and the included one-year subscription to kids content.

You can provide a similar experience by buying a regular Fire Tablet at $60, but you should only get one of those if you're going to be buying for an older child, teenager, or yourself. You can even get an ad-free model for a bit more if you want to limit your kid's exposure to advertising. If that sounds more like your scenario, then this option is for you. Buy a more grown-up case and slap in a microSD card and use it as a grown-up would!

Tablets were huge when they first came out but quickly lost their luster as they fit in this weird spot where they were too big to be truly portable yet too small to offer good enough computing power. With so much innovation in the category nowadays, there's talk that tablets could totally replace laptops for some people.

With tablets like the Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus and Amazon Fire HD 10, the ability to add a Bluetooth keyboard makes this a pretty sweet proposition. Indeed, Amazon's Fire lineup remains one of the most popular tablet brands, and both of these models offer enticing features for work and play. Amazon's tablets hit their low prices not by compromising on quality but by offering versions with and without ad-supported lock screens. Amazon also keeps some budget-friendly options available, like microSD card storage expansion.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus has been discontinued now, leaving the Fire HD 10 (2023) model as the default option. If you do find the Plus model though, here are all the important pros and cons you need to consider when deciding between the Fire HD 10 Plus vs. Fire HD 10.

Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus vs. Amazon Fire HD 10: Core specs

Both tablets are virtually identical when you look at the core specifications of the Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus and Fire HD 10. They have the exact same dimensions and weight; if you didn't know you were looking at one or the other, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference but for the color. Both come with an ad-supported option that displays sponsored screensavers, or without ads, and with 32GB or 64GB capacities with the option to increase this to 1TB via a separately purchased microSD memory card.

Amazon refreshed the Fire HD 10 model in 2023 by making it a bit lighter and giving it new colors. The specs and battery life are also a bit better than the Fire HD 10 Plus.

It's pretty clear these two tablets are effectively identical, but for two key differences: the Plus version has more RAM and wireless charging capability. They are two small but pretty important upgrades. This is especially so if you're using the tablet on the go, at your desk, and for business reasons as well as leisure.

Both are thinner and lighter than their predecessors, and each comes equipped with 10.1-inch 1200p HD screens displaying over two million pixels and a screen that's made of strengthened aluminosilicate glass.

Both offer a new split-screen feature that allows you to view two apps side-by-side for ultimate multitasking. You can access all of your favorite streaming services from both, like Netflix, Hulu, and, of course, Amazon Prime Video. Download tons of apps, from TikTok to Facebook and Instagram. But there's one huge caveat: neither tablet supports the Google Play Store. Instead, everything is downloaded through the Amazon App Store. You can always sideload the Play Store if you're so inclined.

Use software like Microsoft Office, OneNote, and DropBox with both, and connect to compatible smart home devices to control them right from the tablet. You could also do things like view live footage from a compatible smart security camera on the device's screen.

Both tablets feature Alexa for voice control, including Show Mode, which provides audible responses and lets you visually see responses on the screen. With the HD 10 Plus, Show Mode is automatically activated once the device is placed in the wireless charging dock, which is a convenient feature, especially if you want to keep the tablet docked at all times while you aren't using it as a sort of central home hub.

The 2023 Fire HD 10 also supports the Amazon Stylus Pen so you can jot down notes or journal when you travel.

Both offer access to Amazon Kids, so you set up a specific child profile for a young one to use that only permits access to certain apps and websites. And they both also meet Energy Star requirements and are made of 28% post-consumer recycled plastics, something that environmentally conscious folks will appreciate.

Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus vs. Amazon Fire HD 10: Audio and connectivity

Both tablets feature built-in speakers and mics, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, along with support for A2DP. Enjoy streaming content with not only the high-resolution screen but also Dolby Atmos immersive audio.

Take photos and videos using the 5MP rear camera and enjoy video calls and selfies using the 2MP front camera on the Fire HD 10 Plus. The standard Fire HD 10 now gets 5MP cameras on the frontt and back, making it a better device for video calls.

The accelerometer lets you position the tablet in landscape or portrait mode to accommodate everything from watching movies to reading e-books. Ambient light sensors ensure comfortable reading. Both tablets can connect wirelessly to a compatible Bluetooth keyboard to transform into a more laptop-like experience so that you can go from downtime to productivity time with ease.

Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus vs. Amazon Fire HD 10: Key differences

Where these two tablets differ operationally is with power: while they both have 2GHz octa-core processors, the HD 10 Plus has 4GB of RAM versus just 3GB of RAM in the Fire HD 10. That extra bump might come in handy for multitasking, running multiple programs or apps simultaneously, or streaming high-quality or bandwidth-intensive apps and programs. The current 2023 refresh of the Fire HD 10 though has a 25% faster processor which could compensate for the lack of RAM.

They also differ in charge. Both offer USB-C charging and the Fire HD 10 Plus can run for up to 12 hours per charge. The Fire HD 10 (2023) though boasts of 13 hours of battery life per charge. But the Fire HD 10 Plus can charge wirelessly as well, using any compatible Qi-certified wireless charger or the Made for Amazon Wireless Charging Dock, which sells for $55 on Amazon.

The third main difference is in the exterior finishes. While the Fire HD 10 Plus comes in a soft-touch slate color, the HD 10 comes in black, lilac, and ocean, providing more options and playful finishes that might appeal more to children.

While we love the extra specs like wireless charging that comes with the Fire HD 10 Plus, the fact is that Amazon has discontinued it making it hard to find online. In fact, it has removed wireless charging from all its current models. This leaves the 2023 Fire HD 10 as your only real option to consider.

This too is a pretty good option for the price considering it offers better performance and a better front camera compared to the Fire HD 10 Plus. Battery life is also said to have improved.

When looking for an affordable tablet for a young child, you might be better off with the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro. Designed specifically for older kids, it focuses on durability via the included bumper case along with parental controls and offers a diverse kid-appropriate content library.

Crossy Road

You all remember Frogger, right? And you probably miss those good old days of simple, traffic dodging gaming, don't you? Well, you're in luck, because the spirit of Frogger rides again with Crossy Road. 

There's not much to say about such a simple game, but that doesn't make it any less fun. Just tap the screen to get your character from one side of the road to the next without getting crushed, drowned, or heaven knows what else.

Drawful 2

Drawful is back, and it's better than ever thanks to new features like custom prompts, censoring options (making it more family-friendly and stream-friendly), and an audience feature that allows potentially thousands of players to join your games. Games don't have to be complicated to be good and Happy Color proves that. Happy Color boasts thousands of images for you to bring to life, from nature scenes to hobbies and even Disney and Pixar scenes. Although the game bills itself as a color-by-number game for adults, it's just as good for kiddos, too.

Happy Color is also free, which makes it nearly ideal for the artistically inclined among us. Its one big downside is that forced ads pop up every few images, detracting from the more soothing aspects of the game.

Jackbox Party Pack 3

It's hard to believe, but there are some folks out there who still haven't heard about Jackbox Games. Jackbox and all of its assorted Party Packs feature hilarious party games that pit you and your friends against each other for the coveted crown of victory. 

There are quite a few Jackbox Party Packs available for Amazon Fire HD tablets. Still, Jackbox Party Pack 3 is my personal recommendation because it has two of my favorite games, Trivia Murder Party and Tee K.O.

At $24.99, it's a pricey pick for sure, but the replay value is excellent, and only one person has to own the game; everyone else can join a room for free from their own devices!

Lake Jigsaw Puzzles

Take advantage of the Fire HD tablet's bigger screen with a traditional jigsaw puzzle game. The peaceful scenes of lakes and forests may be a bit boring for the average child, but if you've ever been an insanely bored adult on a plane, then this is a perfect way to unwind and kill some time. Plus, this is just one example from a developer with loads of other options available on Amazon. Puppies, sunsets, waterfalls, you name it, Titan Game has made a jigsaw game for it.

Useful features like pinch to zoom, the ability to use your own music, four different puzzle types, and puzzles ranging from 9 to 1,600 pieces make this a pretty solid free game for your tablet. And if you do ever manage to complete all of them, don't forget that Titan Game has many more for you to choose from.

LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga

The LEGO games have become a staple of kid-friendly gaming that many adults also wind up loving. That's what makes LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga such a good choice for families. Parents get to share their love of Star Wars with their kids and the kids get to play a fun, silly game that's also jam-packed with great storytelling.

There are over 36 story-mode levels in this great collection, spanning the Star Wars saga from Maul to Vader and everything in between. There's even some bonus content packed in there, too! With over 100 characters to unlock and play as, you can rest assured that every Star Wars fan will be able to find a Jedi or a Sith to suit their preferences.

Minecraft has reigned supreme as a global gaming obsession for years, and it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. It's hard to categorize a game with so many possibilities, but Minecraft is a sandbox game where players can craft essentially anything, collect resources, and build incredible structures limited only by your imagination. Plus, doing it all with a community of millions of other players from around the world. 

At $6.99, Minecraft is practically a steal when you consider how most players will put hundreds, possibly even thousands, of hours into Minecraft over time. While Minecraft has been on mobile for quite a while now, it's arguably a better experience on the bigger screens of tablets than most phones. 

Monument Valley

Put yourself in the shoes of the Silent Princess as you traverse a fantastical world of impossible architecture. This place isn't always what it seems, though, and you'll have to be creative and think outside the box to solve Monument Valley's stunning environmental puzzles. Good for both adults and children alike (rated All Ages), this delightful puzzle game is sure to keep you entertained for many happy hours.

With its minimalist graphics, stellar art direction, and a great soundtrack, some people would even consider Monument Valley a perfect mobile gaming experience—myself included! It also has a sequel, Monument Valley 2, so you can move on to the next title once you've wrapped up this first installment.

Phantasmat: Behind the Mask

I have a confession to make: I was obsessed with hidden object games when I was younger. And you know what? They're still fun! Big Fish Games has been pumping out titles like Phantasmat for many years, and they're a great addition to the bigger screens of tablet gaming. Phantasmat has a delightfully spooky setting in a classic haunted mansion, mini-games, some light puzzles, and hidden object rooms galore.

Plus, this is the full collector's edition of Phantasmat, so you'll have access to all of the bonus and add-on content from the game in one convenient package. The only downside to games like this is that they're typically fairly short. If you really took your time, you could probably drag Phantasmat out over the course of a few hours, but if you were really on a roll, you might actually finish it in one night. At $4.99, though, Phantasmat is less expensive than seeing a movie and just as fun.

Quell Zen+

Quell Zen+ is a little hard to describe, but man is this game fun. A logic game at its core, Quell Zen+ has you guide raindrops through little mazes to solve 200+ levels of puzzling madness. There are even a few hidden puzzles snuck in there, so keep your eyes peeled as you progress. 

Accompanied by an elegant, peaceful soundtrack, this title's calming atmosphere makes it a great choice for winding down before bed. You can easily sink hours into Quell Zen+, so it's a real bargain at $3.99. Do yourself a favor and pick up this fantastic puzzle game for your tablet. 

Stardew Valley

At this point, Stardew Valley is synonymous with idyllic farming sim games. Stardew Valley was ported to mobile a few years after its initial release, and it's a superb title to add to your collection for tablet gaming thanks to the larger screen size. 

In Stardew Valley, you play a character who has inherited their grandfather's dilapidated farm. Tasked with fixing up the place and creating a profitable paradise away from the stresses of city life, you'll make friends, explore dangerous mines, help the town, and spend your seasons growing crops and raising farm animals to your liking.

There's never a dull moment in Stardew Valley, and I've spent well over 200+ hours in my own files (I'm up to 3 farms now). There's even a multiplayer option now so that you can play with friends on the same farm. New updates have been added over the years, so even if you've played Stardew before, it may be worth another look now if you haven't had the fully updated experience yet.

Stray Souls: Stolen Memories

Yes, it's another hidden object game, and no, I'm not sorry. As I said, I can't get enough of these types of games, and Stray Souls: Stolen Memories is another great addition for Fire HD tablet users. As a mother on a quest to save her daughter, you'll have to explore a strange town and solve a mystery along the way about your husband's past to rescue her.

With 48 locations, 14 hidden object scenes, and a bevy of mini-games, Stray Souls can be enjoyed over a few days or in one big binge session. This is actually a sequel to the first Stray Souls game but can be played as its own standalone experience. It's a great deal at $2.99, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys hidden object games.

The Room Three

Escape room games are as fun in the virtual world as they are in real life, and it doesn't get much better than the aptly titled The Room series when it comes to mobile escape games. Of course, 2,000+ reviews and a 5-star rating can't be wrong, right? 

The Room Three features a slew of physical puzzling scenarios and a wide variety of beautifully rendered 3D objects for you to inspect, rotate, and interact with as you solve puzzles. Coupled with a dynamic soundtrack and great audio design, The Room Three is a tactile experience that is easy to get the hang of thanks to its intuitive interface.

At just $3.99, The Room Three, and perhaps its siblings The Room and The Room Two, should be high on your list of games to add to your Fire library. Pick this lovingly designed game up now, but be warned, you may not be able to put it back down.

Threes!

Threes! is a game that is simple to pick up and play, with an engaging loop that is easy to learn. Don't be fooled by the minimalist design and easy premise however, as Threes! is extremely addictive. In Threes!, players must swipe numbered tiles of a lesser value into greater numbers to create the largest number possible, but swiping also introduces a new tile to the board. This makes the board more cluttered with every swipe, and also makes it gradually more likely that you'll get stuck.

Amazon Fire Tablets are perfect for a lot of things. Whether it's watching movies or being productive on your device, one thing that kids love most about using a tablet is playing games. 

The Amazon Appstore has a lot of great options, but there are also plenty of not-so-great choices. These are the best kids games for Amazon Fire HD tablets, whether for a Fire HD 7, the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro, or other Fire HD tablet, — there's lots of fun to be had.

Minecraft

Minecraft is one of the world's most popular games today, even after its official release in 2011. Since then, the game has expanded onto nearly every platform, including Amazon Fire Tablets. The sheer scope of the game and limitless avenues for creativity makes it a great game for kids to explore and build.

The open world is filled with your imagination in building anything and everything from pixelated-looking block pieces. Depending on which of the four modes you are playing in, the creative process is a bit different. In Survival Mode, you explore the world, looking for various resources needed to build items you want, like structures and weapons. In addition, there are some creatures like zombies and creepers to be aware of.

Creative Mode is there to let you build anything you can imagine with unlimited resources, and no fear of being attacked by the creatures. Adventure mode lets you build worlds for others to explore, or you yourself can wander through other player's creations. The fourth mode is Spectator, where you are free to view creations from others while being invisible.

Minecraft has a social aspect to it, as it can be played with others online, so that's something to keep in mind as your child gets involved. Minecraft has some impressive creations, like full recreations of popular buildings from movies or structures found in the real world. Minecraft can allow anyone to explore their creativity and learn problem-solving skills.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Whether your child became a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog from 2020's movie, or because you're a fan of the classic Sega games, it's hard not to love the blue speedster. While the original Sonic the Hedgehog game is available on the Amazon Fire tablet as well, the sequel makes this list because of the extra fun it brings.

In Sonic The Hedgehog 2, we still get plenty of Sonic himself, but we also get the chance to play as two of his buddies in Tails and Knuckles in this reimagining of the original game that was released all the way back in 1992. Speeding through the levels on your tablet to defeat the evil Dr. Eggman is so much fun — one of my son's absolute favorite to play on his Fire Kids tablet.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is remastered for mobile so that everything works wonderfully. In addition to ensuring the game plays well, there are also new levels, a Boss Attack mode, and new enemies to battle. Playing this classic Sega game and listening to the fun sounds as you speed around collecting rings and bouncing around is as fun now as it was in 1992.

Subway Surfers

One of the first games my son played on his Fire tablet was Subway Surfers, and after a couple of years, it's still one of his favorites. The fun environments and characters to the prizes and perks that can be earned through gameplay keep the game fresh each time it's played.

Start off playing this endless runner-style game as Jake, running from the trainyards inspector and his dog — Jake's been decorating the train cars. Dashing along the tracks to avoid capture and dodging the trains along the way — you have to jump over and slide under signs while trying to gather coins to earn prizes.

Reaching various score levels and coins collected earns you fun new customizations, accessories like skateboards, and paint-powered jetpacks, along with unlocking new characters Tricky and Fresh. The gameplay is controlled by swiping in up, down, left, and right to move your character around to escape being caught or running into signs.

MouseBotMouseBot

MouseBot is a fun platform game in which you control a robotic mouse-like car through a series of mazes that get more exciting and complicated with each completed attempt. But these are just your typical boring mazes, where you wander around until you find the exit.

During your quest to escape from over 80 different challenges created by the scientists at CatLabs, you'll have to watch out for different obstacles. These roadblocks can take many forms, including lasers, crushing grinders, acid pools, and more.

Aside from trying to escape the maze, you'll also be working to ultimately gain more cheese and clues to gain MouseBot's freedom. This is one of my kids' favorites and provides plenty of fun and entertainment as they use planning, reflexes, and imagination to complete each maze.

Angry Birds Transformers

Merging the fun characters from Angry Birds games with exciting and classic characters of the Transformers universe results in an all-new game style to the Angry Birds franchise. 

Breaking from the recognizable aim and slingshot gameplay of the past, Angry Birds Transformers is an action-packed game that keeps familiar elements from the original games and melds it with a new style for a game that keeps you ready for more.

Eggs on Piggy Island have been transformed into crazy evil robots by the Eggspark that is demolishing the island, and the only hope to save it are the Autobirds. This can essentially turn an Amazon Fire tablet into a smart home hub with just a tap. The feature originally debuted back in 2020 for select Fire tablets, before being expanded and becoming Smart Dashboard on some of the best Fire TVs. 

How to turn an Amazon Fire tablet into a smart home hub with Device Dashboard

Being able to have a tablet like the Amazon Fire 7 or Fire HD 8 docked on your desk or countertop with all of your smart home controls is extremely convenient. You won't need to worry about Alexa not properly recognizing your voice or command, but it also makes it easy to access any of your best smart security cameras that are Alexa-enabled too.

The only requirement for Device Dashboard is that your Fire tablet needs to be signed into the same Alexa account. If not, none of the best smart home devices that you previously set up will be available. Here's how you can set up Device Dashboard on your Fire tablet. 

1. Turn on and unlock your Amazon Fire tablet.

2.  In the navigation bar, tap the Device Dashboard button in the bottom left corner.

3. You can turn each listed smart home accessory on or off by tapping the corresponding button. 

4. Under Favorites, tap the Edit button to add more devices to your Favorites list.

5. In the top right corner, tap Add New Favorite. 

6. Tap the Star icon in the top right corner of each device to add it to your Favorites. 

In the event that you want to check one of your smart home devices that isn't a listed favorite, you just need to scroll past the list of Favorites. There's a Categories section that will show the various product categories available, such as Lights or Plugs.

Amazon's Device Dashboard also makes it easy if you want to try and set up various routines. If you scroll beneath the list of smart home devices, there's a Recommended Routines section. From there, you can either tap the Enable Routine button, or the X in the top right corner to dismiss the suggestions. 

Adding smart home accessories to Device Dashboard

With the Device Dashboard, the primary focus is to provide quick and easy access to your smart home accessories and devices. While this is extremely convenient if you have one of the best Fire tablets at your disposal, it's not the most feature-rich experience. 

You won't be able to add (or delete) any devices to the Device Dashboard app itself. Instead, you'll need to head into the Alexa app if you end up getting a new security camera, or other smart home products. 

1. Tap the Device Dashboard icon in the bottom-left corner of the navigation bar. 

2. In the top right corner, tap Manage Devices in Alexa App. 

3. Tap the Add (+) button in the top right corner.

4. Tap Add Device. 

5. Follow the on-screen steps to select and add a smart home device to your Alexa app.

Access Device Dashboard from Lock Screen

By default, Device Dashboard is only accessible when your Fire tablet is unlocked. However, Amazon makes it possible to use this feature from the Lock Screen, it just first needs to be enabled from the Settings app. 

1. Open the Settings app on your Fire tablet.

2. Scroll down and tap Security & Privacy. 

3. Under Lock Screen, tap Device Dashboard. 

4. Tap the toggle next to Access Device Dashboard From Lock Screen. 

With this enabled, you can now access and use Device Dashboard from the Lock Screen of your Fire tablet. This is done by swiping inwards from the bottom left corner toward the center of the screen. 

Once you start to swipe, the screen will look like you're turning a page, providing an indication that you are actually performing the correct gesture.

Control your smart home with a few taps

Even with all of our favorite smart speakers at our disposal, sometimes it's not convenient to have to turn on and off a light with our voice. Amazon has done a great job providing tablets with kids in mind over the years. The Fire 7 Kids is the entry-level device with the most attainable price among the entire lineup of Amazon Kids tablets. However, with the 2022 model, the gap between it and the mid-level Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids isn't as wide. My kids and I have spent the past couple of weeks using the Amazon Fire 7 Kids 2022, and are ready to help you decide if it's worth the price increase or not.

Amazon Fire 7 Kids: Price and availability

Amazon announced the Fire 7 Kids alongside the standard Fire 7 tablet on May 18 2022. The Fire 7 Kids began pre-orders that day for $109.99, and shipments began on June 29, 2022. The tablet is currently retailing for the same $109.99 launch price at multiple retailers such as Best Buy, Staples, Kohls, and of course, Amazon. The only color option for the tablet is black, but the included case is available in Blue, Purple, and Red.

Amazon Fire 7 Kids: What's good

Amazon's Fire 7 Kids has been one of the best tablets for kids for some time now, and if you haven't used one yet, I'll give you a brief description. The 2022 model has very few external differences from the previous version. It's slightly lighter and a little thinner, but overall, it's the same 7-inch screen in a black plastic case with a big foam case on the outside.

The case did pick up some fun patterns on the back, as well as the excellent built-in handle/kickstand that the Fire HD 8 Kids and Fire HD 10 Kids got last year. Perhaps the best improvement on the outside of the tablet is the switch to USB-C from MicroUSB. Now, all of the excellent Amazon Kids tablets use the same connector type. 

Otherwise, the 2022 tablet maintains the power button and volume buttons on the same side along with the headphone jack, just as its predecessor. So handling the Fire 7 Kids tablet feels very much the same as before, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Its compact size makes it easy to hold for smaller hands and takes up less room in a bag when the family is on the go.

As we move inside the tablet, we get a few more upgrades that have meaningful benefits to using the device. While I mentioned earlier that the Fire 7 Kids tablet is an entry-level device suited for younger kids, it doesn't mean that the tablet performs poorly. But the previous version's internal hardware was beginning to get a bit long in the tooth, causing sluggish usability that even younger kids could notice.

Thankfully, Amazon doubled the RAM to 2GB. The Fire 7 Kids now offers a 32GB storage option instead of only a 16GB version, and also bumped up the capacity support from 512GB to 1TB for microSD cards. 

If you can afford the extra $20 to go from 16 to 32GB of internal storage, it's worth it because nearly half of the 16GB is taken up by the OS and required apps. While you can move your downloads and some apps to external storage, the tablet can still have less than ideal performance due to low internal storage availability.

I have the red version of the Amazon kid-proof case that has a light blue, possibly turquoise, handle. While Amazon calls the case red, it looks more coral-like to me. Definitely not a firetruck red hue. It's not bad, just something to be aware of if the person you are getting it for truly loves red.

Both of my kids have been using Amazon Fire Kids tablets for a few years now, with my 6-year-old using the Fire HD 8 Kids, and my 9-year-old using the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro. Like most kids, as soon as they saw a new device in the house that looked like it could be for kids, they both got very interested. 

Once I finished installing a few system updates that were waiting for the tablet when it arrived, I added both of my kid's profiles. The next step was to hand the table to my kids and let them go. Thankfully, Amazon Kids+ makes the process super easy and maintains all the settings I have enabled from their other tablets.

I intentionally didn't tell them it was different in any way. I wanted to see if they would complain about the Fire 7 Kids feeling slow or anything else — and they didn't. They also likely would not have understood the differences other than size. I told them they might have to download specific games and content they wanted, as it didn't automatically come over when the tablet was set up.

We took the tablet with us on a long camping trip, and a few road trips in addition to using it at home. Not once was there a peep from my kids about the device not working. I also had my wife put her profile on it and use the tablet as her own for a few days. She, too, had no complaints about the tablet's performance. 

When I used the Fire 7 Kids with some of the excellent games for Amazon Kids tablets that are on the heavy side of the graphics scale, I could notice the tablet bogging down. But, the tablet fairs quite well for light gaming, watching movies, browsing the web, and other leisure usages. One of the most surprising things about the tablet was how good the battery life was.

Amazon states the Fire 7 Kids can get up to 10 hours of usage per charge, which is pretty accurate. Can the tablet be drained faster? Sure, but with usage mixed between online and offline, games, videos, and reading, the tablet made it through the camping weekend without needing a charge.

Amazon Kids+ continues to be a star for both parents and kids. It keeps the same excellent parental controls, a massive library of curated content just for kids, and customizability to allow for multiple kids to use the same device. As with other Amazon Kids devices, you'll get a year of Amazon Kids+ for free along with the case and two years of worry-free warranty.

Amazon Fire 7 Kids: What's not good

The upgraded base model for Amazon Fire Kids tablets offers an excellent bang for the buck. But in order to experience these improvements, it's going to require more bucks. While the increase from $99.99 to $109.99 isn't a massive change, it could be enough to make someone think hard about picking up the Fire HD 8 Kids instead, which Amazon upgraded with a new model in 2022. 

If you spring for the 16GB Fire 7 Kids, you'll save $30 over the Fire HD 8 Kids. But, if you go for the 32GB, you are only $10 away from the Fire HD 8 Kids. While the Fire 7 Kids may still be the best option for your particular situation, it's worth noting this price increase, and how it may be a cause for pause to look at the next tablet tier.

Otherwise, there aren't too many other things that are negatives for the Fire 7 Kids. The 7-inch screen can feel a bit cramped when using it, especially with the big case on it. However, if the primary user has small hands, it isn't an issue. But again, when you look at the specifics of who will primarily be using the tablet and for how long, the Fire HD 8 Kids' larger screen, clearer display might be worth it.

Sure, the Amazon Fire 7 Kids, like all Amazon-branded tablets, does not run a version of Android that many are used to. It runs a custom Android version, meaning there are no Google Play Services. This locks out the device's Google apps like YouTube, YouTube Kids, Gmail, and others. But, if you allow access to the web browser and the internet to the device, those websites can be accessed. 

Amazon Fire 7 Kids: Competition
