$80 now the entry point for a single smart phone with 500MB of data

Amidst a flurry of news today, Verizon made a simple change to its "Share Everything" plan structure that added a new lower-cost tier with a smaller data bucket. Possibly a reaction to AT&T's new lower-tier plans, Verizon now offers a 500MB plan at $40 per month, undercutting the previous bottom-end 1GB plan at $50.

New line of products planned for European market instead, spokesperson tells Pocket-Lint

There's disappointment tonight for buyers in the UK hoping to pick up Motorola's much-hyped Moto X handset. British tech site Pocket-Lint says a Moto spokesperson has confirmed that the device will not be coming to the UK. Instead, the Moto X is apparently the first in a new family of Motorola phones, and more devices in this family will be launched globally in the future.

The site quotes a Motorola spokesperson as saying —

'Switcher Bonus' knocks $75 off the price for new activations.

U.S. Cellular is jumping on the bandwagon of Moto X news today by announcing its own pricing, availability and deals for the handset. Just as is the case with the other carriers, U.S. Cellular will have both the black and white Moto X in 16GB capacity for $199 on-contract (and an oddly-high $699 off-contract). The carrier is also offering a $75 "Switcher Bonus", which knocks the on-contract price to $124 for new activations.

Additionally, U.S. Cellular is actually putting the device up for pre-order today, letting you lock in your device while the other carriers simply have announcements up. Customers who pre-order will also get a Motorola Boom Bluetooth headset, valued at $59.99.

A specific launch date is not yet known, but latest leaks point to the last week of August.

Verizon will have Moto X 'Moto Maker' customization later this year

Black and white models available at launch; no pricing or details given.

Verizon has announced today on its official Twitter account that it will carry both black and white versions of the Moto X, along with "Moto Maker" customizable models later this year. AT&T dropped a bit of a disappointing news on us this afternoon when it announced that it would be the exclusive partner for Motorola's new Moto Maker service, which gives you access to all of those crazy colors, cases and engravings for the Moto X.

While the details of the exclusivity aren't known at the moment, we know that it will end by the end of this year and be heading to at least Verizon. Beyond this little bit of news on color options, Verizon isn't yet spilling the beans on what its pricing or availability will be. We can make a good guess at the former — $199 on-contract most likely — but don't have any idea on the latter.

Rogers snags Moto X exclusive in Canada

Moto X

Both black and white Moto X models will be available on Rogers starting in August for $189.99 on a two-year contract.

Canadians looking over all of this Moto X goodness today will only have one spot they can get it initially: Rogers. Of course, we all know how these exclusives usually only last a few months, so we can probably expect the same situation here. The Rogers Moto X takes advantage of LTE on the 2600 MHz band, though I'm dubious that it makes an appreciable difference. Both black and white models will be available, while the pricetag will sit at $189.99 on a two-year contract. Yay for two-year contracts. Expect to see it on shelves in August.

Anyone interested can hit up the Rogers notification page for more info, or take a look at our hands-on video to get the full tour.

Only 16GB model available, colors and specific availability unknown.

Following in the footsteps of AT&T this afternoon, Sprint has announced its own pricing and availability window for the newly-announced Moto X. Just like its larger counterpart, Sprint is hitting the same price point of $199 for the 16GB model but will not have the 32GB available as of now. Color options aren't known right now either, and it isn't clear at this point how long AT&T will have those locked up.

No specific availability is given by Sprint for the Moto X other than "this Summer", indicating that a launch date will be shared when we get closer to it. For now, Sprint is offering a pre-registration page where customers can sign up to get more information on the device.

There are some 18 different backs from which you can choose when you're customizing your Moto X. Colors out the wazoo.

Wood is not yet one of them. But it will be.

Motorola currently is testing four wood backs for the Moto X. Not "looks like wood." Not "simulated wood." Actual wood.

One of Motorola's standout features in the Moto X camera is "Quick Capture," which gets you from sleep to shooting in a mere 2 seconds, all with a simple flick of the wrist.

The idea sounds a little silly at first — do you really want to be flipping your phone around? But in actuality, it's pretty simple, and quick.

'OK, Google Now. Show me the Moto X'

Motorola and Google, as we like to say in the South, have done good. We've finally gotten our first look at the new Moto X today in New York City. This thing's been leaked eight ways to Sunday over the past few months — and frankly a lot of what you're about to read we saw in last week's Droid announcements — but pick up the Moto X for the first time and you know you're feeling not just another phone, but a phone looking to do things a little different.

The Moto X is the first phone designed and built from scratch since Google acquired Motorola. And the end result is a phone that's as simple as it is complex. Its design is as understated as it is attractive. There have been so many assumptions about what the first Googlerola phone should be. It should be "Pure Google." It should have NASA-level hardware. It should have at least as many features as the droid line.

What Motorola's done is taken solid hardware and attractive design and married it to a fairly stock version of Android — with some interesting features thrown in, as well as a number of customization options. It's coming to five U.S. carriers in a few weeks and worldwide later, retailing for $199 on contract.

And with that, here's our first look at the Moto X.

The many faces of Motorola's latest smartphone

Unlike most smartphones, Motorola's Moto X will come in a wide range of different colors, textures and materials. And today in New York City Motorola was showing off a handful of them — from textured black and white plastic, to a range of wood finishes.

The base device comes in black and white, and Motorola's promising 16 customization options for the rear panel. So check past the break to see the Moto X in various colors from various angles. We've also got side-by-side comparisons with the Nexus 4 and HTC One.

AT&T officially announces the Moto X with unique customization options

Android Central
Moto X

Moto X

Hot on the heels of the official unveiling of the Moto X, AT&T has checked in to tell us about their variant — and it will be the one most people will want. Other carriers will of course be selling the Moto X, but only AT&T is offering the rumored customization options everyone was curious about, as well as the 32GB version of the phone. Here's a list of the AT&T-only options:

  • Color options for the front and back (2 colors for the front, 16 for the back)
  • Accent colors for the power key, volume key and camera ring (7 color options)
  • Adding your name or short message on the phone
  • Unique wallpapers
  • Wake-up message
  • Memory capacity – 16GB ($199 with 2 year agreement) or 32GB ($249 with 2 year agreement)

We've been expecting some customization for the Moto X based on all the leaked news and images, but now we're hearing that many of them — including the all-important 32GB version — will be AT&T only. It's a bit of a let-down for many.

But in AT&T's favor, they now have a very compelling option to go head-to-head with Verizon's Droid models, and this should be a popular seller. We're impressed with what we've seen so far. Expect more Moto X news to come from other carriers, and hopefully other surprises with each announcement. Follow the jump for AT&T's full press release.

AT&T HTC One receiving update to enable new frequency bands

Hefty update enables Band 2 and 5 LTE for improved coverage.

Users with AT&T variants of the HTC One are pulling down an update starting this morning that is a pretty hefty size. The ~250MB update, which started pushing out today, despite its size does nothing more than enable Band 2 and Band 5 LTE on the handset. That's still an important change, and considering how large and complex the radios are the size of the update does make sense. Going forward as AT&T expands its LTE coverage to new bands it will be important to have everything enabled on the device ahead of time.

Members in our forums have already started to see the updates hit their own devices, and we've got the update downloading as well. Let us know in the forums if you happen to find any user-facing changes in this latest update.
