Roku app adds local video playback on your set-top box

17

Only a handful of devices supported in initial release

Brining its Android offering up to parity with the iOS version, Roku has just updated its app to enable local video playback from your phone to your Roku box on select devices. After signing in and pairing the Roku app with a Roku box (running software version 5.1 or later), you'll now have a new option to select "Videos" from the "Play on Roku" menu in the app. Now all together you can display music, photos or videos directly from your device to the Roku with just a tap.

The functionality seems to work pretty well, but Roku recommends having at least an 802.11n Wifi router for the best performance. Right at this moment the video playback functionality is available on the Roku 3, Roku 2, Roku LT, Roku HD on the set-top box side, and the Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, Nexus 4, HTC One, and Nexus 7 (2012) on the Android side.

Grab the latest version of the Roku app from the Play Store link above and give it a try for yourself.

Insider says 4.3 coming for US-based HTC One soon, more info for Europe

68

Android 4.3 and Sense 5 expected soon for US models of HTC One

Someone known to have good leads inside HTC has spoken on Twitter about the coming 4.3 update for the HTC One, and he believes we'll see it in a few weeks. This matches up with information we've already heard, but there's some more information here that we think makes it newsworthy.

According to @LlabTooFer, we will see the US versions of the HTC One get the Android 4.3 update with Sense 5 soon. After this happens, International versions should prepare for the Android 4.3 with Sense 5.5 update. After the release of the HTC T6 (the HTC One Max), all HTC Ones, the Butterfly S and the One Mini will see Sense 5.5 with the 4.3 update. Specifically mentioned as not getting the 4.3 update were the HTC One S (all variants) and the HTC EVO LTE on Sprint.

There's not much information about Sense 5.5, just this rumor that we should see it eventually. We're looking forward to finding out more, and you'll be the first ones to know.

Snapchat 'Micro' will be coming to the Galaxy Gear

16

Now you'll be able to take self-destructing 1.9MP photos from your wrist

When Samsung announced the Galaxy Gear it rolled out a solid list of well-known apps that will be supported on the device, and now Snapchat is announcing it will have a "Micro" version of its app for the smartwatch. The spontaneous use of Snapchat really does lend itself to the always-on nature of a small camera on your wrist, and it's good to see Samsung getting together with popular app makers to have these types of apps ready for launch.

There's no indication of how Snapchat Micro will differ in terms of functionality from the full version of the app on Android, but we have to hope it'll be a full experience. We won't have to wait long though, as Samsung's latest wearable device is ready to hit retailers in just a few weeks.

Hexage's new title Reaper looks like a great new action RPG and is available on Google Play

12

If you're an Android gamer, you have to take a look at Reaper from Hexage. Released today on Google Play, it's an action side-scroller with heavy RPG influence, and incredible graphics and smoothness. You play as the Black Swordsman, and move through quests and levels slaying monsters both easy and hard.

The controls are a little complicated on a touch screen, but the good news is that the game is optimized for other input methods. Designed for controllers like the NVIDIA Shield or MOGA controller, as well as asdf / space bar controls for dockable tablets like the ASUS Transformers or the HP SlateBook X2 pictured above.

The first 10 levels are completely free — meaning no in-app purchases required — but after that you'll need to upgrade to the premium edition. There are three packages available, with the basic full game starting at $2.99 and the full Dark Legend edition, with item sets and new gameplay modes checking in at $4.99.

This one looks like an excellent, immersive little game and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Grab the free version at the link above, and check the video and screen shots after the break.

Three UK offering Sony Xperia M for £149.99 on PAYG plans starting Oct. 11

5

A great inexpensive option with some Sony style for off-contract buyers

Three UK announced today that it is adding a new Sony handset, the Xperia M, to its low-end ranks for a great price of £149.99 on its Pay-As-You-Go plans. Announced back in June, the Xperia M brings some of Sony's latest style and design to the lower-end with acceptable specs for those who consider price first.

The Xperia M has a 4-inch FWVGA (480x854) display, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 5MP camera and 4GB of storage (with SDcard support) — all specs that are understandable considering the price — along with Android 4.1 and full NFC functionality with Sony's "One Touch" connectivity platform.

Folks looking for an affordable option when buying off-contract can pick up the Xperia M from Three UK for the aforementioned £149.99 with PAYG plans starting at 3p a minute, 2p a text and 1p a MB or on monthly plans with unlimited data along with 300 any-network minutes and 3,000 texts for just £15 per month.

Samsung shipped 28 million Galaxy Notes in the past year

54

Sales of the Galaxy Note series increased 280 percent in a year

Samsung is pleased with the sales of their Galaxy Note series. Speaking with the press at IFA in Berlin, CEO J K Shin said:

Galaxy Note 1 and Galaxy Note 2 were sold for a total of over 38 million. We believe Galaxy Note 3 will outdo its predecessors.

We know that the Note series sold to the tune of 10 million last August, so a little rudimentary math tells us that Samsung has seen 28 million leave their factory in the last 12 months.

While not such a huge number when taking the over one billion Android activations total into account, multi-millions worth of sales means Samsung was right to take a gamble on an extra-large phone, and plenty of people around the world want one.

The Note 3 has the potential to be the most popular of the series so far, and we expect it to be just as popular once it's released.

Vodafone UK offering 4GB of bonus data on 4G-ready plans

0

Customers moving to 4G plans also receive unlimited data for three months

Gearing up for the expansion of its 4G LTE network in late September, Vodafone UK is offering new plans in a promotion it is calling "4G Bonus". Customers signing up for new 12 or 24 month contracts with Vodafone on its new "4G-ready" plans will receive double the standard amount of data it offers, plus an additional 4GB of data for the life of their contract.

This means for someone who goes for the entry-level plan and opts to be 4G-ready will get 6GB of data per month instead of the standard 1GB on a regular plan — and the starting price for such a plan with 6GB of data and unlimited talk and texts is just £26 per month.

As a gesture to those who signed up for its 4G-ready plans before this point, Vodafone is extending the 4GB of additional data to anyone who is already a customer at no additional cost. For those wanting to switch carriers or plans starting with this promotion, you have until the end of October to get on-board. You can find a full chart breakdown of the new plans and prices after the break.

@evleaks: LG D820 just a CDMA G2 variant

93

Habitual leaker says D820 is not the next Nexus phone

Remember that LG-D820 that showed up at the FCC a few days back? Complete with code names and a OS version that has everyone convinced that it is the next Nexus phone, it has the specs everyone wants listed. However, one of the Android world's perennial leakers, @evleaks, says that it's just another G2.

This was quickly followed by an image showing other model numbers, including the 821, as you can see above.

Fans are quick to believe @evleaks when he gives information they want to hear, but plenty are skeptical over this information. We have a few ideas, but nothing we're willing to talk about just yet. The jury is still out on exactly what's what, as there is really nothing we can be sure of with the information we have. Hopefully, we know more soon.

Moto X for T-Mobile now available direct from Motorola

48

The 16GB version is available in woven black for $599.99

Motorola has announced that the T-Mobile specific Moto X is now available exclusively on Motorola.com. The phone will be initially available in woven black and with 16GB storage capacity, but Motorola says the woven white model is coming soon. The phone lists for $599.99. The T-Mobile variant will also have an unlockable boot loader for those who like to get in there and tinker.

There's no word on any T-Mobile specific software — like the ever-so-handy Wifi-calling, but the AT&T and Verizon models had the requisite carrier apps so we've not given up hope. Scary day when we want carrier-ware installed on our phones, isn't it?

Currently, the phone is still out of stock on Motorola's page, but the information on their official blog says today is the day. If you've been waiting, you'll want to keep checking the site, which we've linked below.

The mobile photography revolution - Talk Mobile

292

The camera. If there's any part of the smartphone that's seen its usage rate skyrocket over the past few years, that'd be it. Smartphone cameras have gone from little VGA shooters barely worthy of being called a camera to 12, 20, and even 41 megapixel beasts with image quality unfathomable just a few short years ago.
