Amazon is in a slightly awkward situation with its new Fire TV streamer. The company is currently under fire from Wreal, the makers of FyreTV. We're sure you know where this is going. WREAL has filed a complaint in a Florida court alleging a total of five counts of unauthorized use and infringement upon held trademarks. If you're not familiar with the FyreTV, it's a streamer specializing in pornography, which was released in 2008.
Wreal notes in the filing that both products are very similar, providing instant access to a library of content. The only subtle difference is the categorization of content – one being focused on pornographic entertainment. According to an attorney representing the company, Wreal wishes to prevent the public from becoming somewhat confused about the two streaming devices. We're sure many of you would like to avoid the situation of accidentally purchasing the FyreTV.
If anything, we'd say Amazon has a larger issue with public perception and risking misconception that the retailer has got into the adult industry. Wreal is currently seeking damages for trademark infringement, false designation of origin and unfair competition. While we usually steer clear of court cases, this one certainly caught our attention.
