Google Play Movies

A classic family-friendly holiday movie to enjoy for free

Google Play is bringing some holiday cheer to us all with a free SD version of what has turned into a classic Christmas movie in recent years, Elf. For what we can assume is a limited time only, Google Play Movies is offering up Elf for free so that even more people can watch or re-watch this family-friendly Christmas movie.

To watch, simply head into the Play Store — you could do so from the link above — and select "add to library" and start watching. You can always return to it later if you don't have the hour and a half free this moment. When we picked up our copy we noticed you could still buy the film in HD for about $5.99, but there's no shame in snagging the free version for now.

I got it and it added it to my library, so I would be inclined to think its a purchase not a temporary viewing. Hope so at least. My wife wanted to watch it this year but its only been on Starz as of lately, so this avoids me buying the dvd/bluray now. Thanks Google!

Not In canada, just get the option to add to wish list

drhere says:

Never seen it, but I'll add it to watch on my Chromecast later.

Doesn't seem to be available in Canada. It's on Netflix anyway, but free is always nice

brendilon says:

This isn't a rental, it's a purchase. normal purchase price of $9.99(SD) is crossed out. HD is $4.99

Deke218 says:

Click the Add to Library button and it gives you a free play today.

Cheetah23 says:

I think Google is given out the SD version for free. You can now own it, not just rent it.

Not available in the UK. How can elf be free in the US but not available at all in the UK! Can't get it on iTunes either. Surely Santa is international and knows no copyright boundary's.

Not available in Trinidad and Tobago (hey I'm just glad Google Play movies came to my country this week)

Yeah, but you guys have a beautiful country surrounded by a beautiful sea. I'll take that over a movie any day.

Classic?

Yeah, that term gets tossed around a bit too loosely.

Now, Bad Santa... that's a classic.

paulswift36 says:

Apart from it bring rubbish, it's not available outside the US. When will people in the US realise there is the other 3/4 of the planet outside off the US?

Not until China becomes a free nation. It's our way of protesting.

Deke218 says:

We know there's other people out there... It's sort of a "if a tree falls in the forest" things.

When those people start spending the same amount of money consumer goods.

Thanks for the tip! I got it in SD and I'll see how it is on Chromecast. But I might buy the HD with it being only $5. I've been wanting to watch it, but it's only on TV on Starz and wasn't sure about buying it on Amazon for $10.

I just tried it on my Chromecast. It's not bad. Personally, I don't think this is a must see in HD movie.

Not available in Canada?

But anyway, nice for those in the US.

JFetch says:

I would love to watch it, but my Google Wallet account is frozen because it was hacked. I've since moved so I can't even send them id to show who I am because the address won't match up. Since there is no way to actually talk to anyone at Google I will never be able to buy anything or take advantage of any free offers on the Play Store.

evaradar says:

I tried viewing this but it shows up either as: Video not available or it loads but when I hit play, nothing happens. Just a loop of the same "preview screen" before the actual video loads. Anyone else have this issue?

evaradar says:

Edit: It works fine on my N4 and N7. If it helps, the issues are on Firefox and Chrome.
