Google Now reminders

Every year around this time we all see stories of tragedies that occur because of house fires — and dry Christmas trees often are to blame. (We had one here in my town just last week.)

This year, I'm using my phone to help make sure that doesn't happen. Google Now has an excellent reminder feature. Just tell your phone what you need to be reminded of, and it'll take care of the rest. So in this case, I said:

"Remind me every two days to put water in the Christmas tree."

You can adjust the start date, what time you want to be reminded, and how often you want to be reminded to water your tree. I'm going to look every two days. Simple and effective. Stay safe out there, folks.

But the cleanup, oh the cleanup.
Plus the smell is not good enough to warrant possibly having a house fire.

I still think "This" and "Agreed" are fine, but if some random guy starts saying that they can't be used, I listen, lol.

it sadness me that people cut down living trees just for a couple of weeks and then throw it away. oh traditions..

Actually when I did some research on this I was looking to get a living tree that you plant or an artificial tree and found that cutting down a tree is more environmentally friendly.

The living tree is good but they found many of them die when planted during the winter and might not be an option if you don't have space to plant it. I don't have the space and digging a hole in the clay soil in the winter to plant it does not sound like a great idea to me.

The fake trees only have one option when they wear out and that is the dump and the average life for some of the cheaper ones is 3-5 years.

For the real tree the farms have to plant 3 trees for every tree cut down and typically have a mixture of trees from douglass, balsam, conclur, spruce, and frazier trees on the land. As long as the trees are profitable they won't be clear cutting the land for farming or developments.

I go to a local farm every year the saturday after thanksgiving and go pick out a tree from a 150 acre tree farm and many others are in the area.

Here we go. They are a crop no different than corn. If you want a lot of something you sell it. If someone can make money off of something there will be a abundance of the product.

Yeah, but those trees wouldn't have existed otherwise. They are grown for people to use as xmas trees. If nobody bought live xmas trees, then those trees wouldn't have been planted. Besides, I'm not an authority on the issue but I'm guessing that the manufacture and eventual disposal of fake trees isn't exactly good for the environment. That being said, my $35 fake tree from walmart has lasted me 5 years and is still going strong.

mssca says:

Don't want to be so negative, but I learned my lesson on using tech to keep reminders. If the phone dies for some reason, all the reminders will be gone. Unless you sync in advance with Google Account. Bad things had happened to me before.

mssca says:

I think writing down reminders on papers still better for that reason.

The reminders should sync with Google right away.

Posted via Android Central App

mssca says:

Yes, that's what should happen. But may be because Google was still working on it at that time because this happened a long time ago. Never experienced sync issue since then.

You shouldn't need to do that. If the reminders are like calendar entries you get the notice on every phone and tablet you sign into the same Google account on. Are they different?

I love using reminders with Google Now. Setting continuous reminders is a breeze and location based reminders work pretty much flawlessly. AND reminders get synced across all your devices, so if I set a reminder on my phone to do something and I'm using my nexus 7, it still pops up. I'm always showing others about reminders and how easy it is to use!

TonyHoyle says:

I'm not sure I'd advise getting water near a Christmas tree given it's covered in electric lights.. Best advice is to always unplug the lights overnight/when you're out of the house (although modern led lights don't run nearly as hot as the ones from a few years ago).

The ones they sell around here are glued into a wooden base so watering it would be a bit futile anyway..

Where I live, the game and fish commission takes all the trees and puts them in the lakes for fish habitat. I'm sure that other states do the same, its something to look into.

brendilon says:

No, not really. Real trees generally come from tree farms, they're not chopping down old growth forests for them. Fake trees on the other hand are plastic, generally non-recyclable and often don't get many years of use before they look so bad they end up in the dump.

Winter is coming. She's quite the screamer.

I slightly dislike the fact that a lot of Google Now features overlap with Calendar and Keep. It can be very annoying to manage that, I have to remember where did I put every reminder/note/etc.

Jonneh says:

I actually agree with this, and I also don't really like using Google Now's reminders as often as I wish I could because they barely notify me of anything when they go off; is there no way to set which sound file alerts you? The "alert" is barely anything at all, and unless you actively unlock your phone to look at it (and in the process see the tiny icon in the notification bar), you won't really even notice an alert has gone off. I dislike using "google now reminders" for this reason :-\ I guess I could be attempting to use them wrong.

wicketr says:

The integration between the three (Calendar/Keep/Reminders) is horrible. And to go back and edit a reminder is awful as well. They are basically buried under Google Now. Why would they be treated differently than Calendar entries or a Task entry or a Note entry?

They AT LEAST should add a shortcut in the calendar to jump to the reminders. With the way it's tucked under Google Now, it's almost impossible to find/change your existing reminders.

What's nice about it, is you can even set reminders (or calendar entries) from your desktop browser by just typing in the search bar.

Edit: According to Jessica Schwartz of Google on Oct. 31, 2013, it's not possible. HalizDad: If you know something Jessica doesn't, I'd love to know.

Open Google Now on any of your devices and scroll down to the lower left corner. You will see l little icon for a finger with a string tire around it. As for desktop editing I'm not sure.
