Firefox on Android Progressing Nicely, Loads First Page

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 03 February 2010

Like we said before, it's going to take some time before Fennec aka Firefox Mobile actually gets on Android. But at least it looks like porting Fennec over to Android is progressing rather nicely--they actually got their first page load. According to the developer:

Mouse events sort of work, toplevel windows sort of work, keyboard doesn't...

What Is Google Chrome OS And How Does it Affect Android

Casey Chan Featured Friday, 20 November 2009

If you're interested in getting to know Google Chrome OS, Google's latest development in re-creating how we use computers, the videos after the jump are a great start. The funny thing about Google Chrome OS is that it's ambitious in what it's trying to do but relatively tame in its execution. The idea of Google Chrome OS centers around creating a browser as the Operating System, which makes some sense for a lot of users. Since what we do on a computer is often just access...

The Creative Zii Egg Plaszma is Basically A Better iPod Touch Running Android

Casey Chan News Thursday, 30 July 2009

We know that the iPod Touch has become wildly popular in part because it's seen as an iPhone without the phone. An iPod Touch gives you most of the functionality of an iPhone without being bogged down by an expensive data contract. Is there a similar device on Android? There is now.

Meet the Creative Zii Egg Plaszma (yeah, that's a mouthful). This iPod touch competitor has some pretty amazing specs: 3.5" 320 x 480 10-point multi-touch capacitive touchscreen...

Google Announces Google Chrome OS for PCs

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 08 July 2009

The rumors have always pointed towards Google releasing an Operating System but we just never really took it seriously. We figured Android is a desktop-class OS and many netbook manufacturers have taken a liking to it, so Google needn't bring another OS into the market. Oh how wrong we were.

The Google Chrome OS, an open source platform (yay),  is designed for x86 and ARM based netbooks, laptops, and desktop computers. Google says that the OS is...

SciPhone Dream G2 Has A Cute Android Robot Charger

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 01 July 2009

The SciPhone Dream G2 is all kinds of wrong: it's a cheap knockoff phone trying to capitalize on Android's popularity by naming itself both the Dream and G2, the box font is a blatant rip job of the G1 logo, and worst of all, though the OS looks like Android, it's not--it's actually some proprietary OS rigged to look like Android. So the Sciphone G2 pretty much fails at being an even half-way decent Android device...

Android 2.0 Update Codenamed Donut ?

Casey Chan News Tuesday, 12 May 2009

With the Android 1.5 Cupcake Update pushing out to Android Users sometime this week, talk is already beginning on the next Android update: 2.0. According to some reports, Android 2.0 is codenamed 'Donut', which obviously is a clear successor to 1.5's 'Cupcake'.

We're pretty big fans of the 'Donut'-moniker and think Android should keep it for 2.0. And if

Vodafone UK Says Future Android Devices May Have Less Google

Casey Chan News Thursday, 30 April 2009

Vodafone recently hinted in an interview that though they'll be developing more Android devices, those upcoming Android devices may be less Google-centric than the current Android phones available (namely, the Magic and the G1). According to Vodafone's Rachel Williams:

While the HTC Magic contains all the Google features we've come to expect tightly integrated, like Google Mail, future offerings might be more of a 'basic'...

Android Devs Talk About Widgets in Android 1.5

Casey Chan News Tuesday, 21 April 2009

Quite possibly the biggest game-changing feature in Android 1.5 is support for homescreen widgets. If you've messed with Widgets on a computer, the idea remains the same for Android. It's basically a quick glimpse into full-featured applications, for example you could post a calendar widget, or a stock widget, or a weather widget, etc. It's always-on and...

I-Buddie Netbook Runs Android -- VIDEO

Casey Chan News Tuesday, 21 April 2009

Here's yet another video of a netbook (this time the German I-Buddie) running Android. It's definitely a work-in-progress but from the reports, it looks like they want to ship this thing soon. We already know that netbook companies are going to take Android very seriously but we're still a little unsure of how it'll turn out. They'll...

Stanford's Revolutionary Cinder OS Being Ported to the T-Mobile G1

Casey Chan News Thursday, 16 April 2009

Leave it to the kids at Stanford to cook up a new smartphone OS for mobile devices AND try to port it over to the T-Mobile G1. Even though we're Android-focused here at Android Central we can't help but geek out at a new mobile OS and its potential. We think that the smartphone market is much too young to plateau so early so it's refreshing to see a new take at the operating system.

So what is Stanford's Cinder OS? It's basically an OS ...

HP Considering Android For Their Netbooks ?

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 01 April 2009

You could make an argument that the two biggest technology stories of 2008 was Android and netbooks. Android is a potential game-changer in both the wireless world and the mobile industry as a whole. Netbooks are an increasingly popular option for those who simply need the bare basics for their computing. So what could the biggest story of 2009 be? Perhaps, Android-Powered Netbooks? Netbooks running Android? We think so!

HP is reportedly...
