Likely in response to the launch of the HTC Hero on Sprint, Walmart has just dropped the price of the original Android phones. Both the T-Mobile G1 and the myTouch 3G received price drops and if you're a current T-Mobile customer wanting to get a taste of Android, it's as good a deal as you're going to find. The T-Mobile G1 is now $48.88 and the myTouch 3G is $98.88 (with new 2-year contract). It's a really great deal considering how many 'dumbphones' are offered for the same price.

If reports indicating that the T-Mobile G1 is permanently stuck at Android 1.5 and won't receive further software updates like Donut and Eclair are true, it'll break the hearts of many Android users across the world. According to Android software engineer Dave Sparks, there'll be a time when developers "wont be able to fit the latest [Android] release on the G1's internal flash."

The most exciting aspect of the HTC Hero has to be the HTC Sense UI, it's jaw droppingly beautiful and offers a completely brand new experience for Android. We've been watching any video that featured the HTC Sense and have been hoping to see it...

They haven't forgot about us yet. The T-Mobile G1 just got a minor software update that includes "permission and bug fixes" for developers, none of the fixes should affect regular users' usage. So what we're assuming is that this software update is the minor one before Android 2.0 Donut gets released and then we'll get another minor one after Donut to fix bugs on Android 2.0.

Starting June 5th, T-Mobile is going to drop the price of the T-Mobile G1 to $149.99 with new activation. This is a $30 price drop from the $179.99 price point the G1 launched with. Could this be a sign of clearing out inventory for the next onslaught of Android devices?

Though we had originally hypothesized that the T-Mobile G1 v2 would be the HTC Memphis prototype device, it turns out we were looking at the wrong company. The T-Mobile G1 v2 is not even from HTC. According to BGR, the T-Mobile G1 v2 may be a Motorola Device and NOT an HTC device like the original G1 was.

According to T-Mobile USA, G1 Android users downloaded an average of at least 40 applications for their phones while iPhone users averaged about 37 apps. There is no data as to retention of apps - G1 users may have downloaded their 40 apps, only to keep half that number, while iPhone users may retain more on their device, and vice versa.

It looks like China Unicom may have scored a coup against bigger rival China Mobile. They just might be the carrier in China that will launch the HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1) and the iPhone. Take that China Mobile!

There isn't an official confirmation but China Unicom has posted specs of the G1 and listed it as a supported handset. Getting on a Chinese carrier is almost guaranteeing Android a large slice of the worldwide mobile handset...

BGR is trying to put two and two together and predicting (with no sources, leaks, or tips) that the T-Mobile G2 is going to show up at CTIA. For those keeping score: the T-Mobile G2 is the HTC Magic and CTIA is a pretty huge mobile industry convention. What makes this interesting is that CTIA is right around the corner (April 1-3) and well, it does make a little sense.

Oh yes. Cupcake rumors that we wish oh so much to be true are once again at the forefront of the discussion. This time Pocket-lint claims that T-Mobile representatives have confirmed that the Cupcake software update for Android will be released in April. To quote:

Even though the month is only half over, Google is pouring it on with giving us even more "wow" and pizazz. Now you can view, edit, filter, and sort spreadsheets via List View on your G1! According to Google's Blog:

Does this smartphone look familiar? Hard to hide those lines, those curves, that little trackball. Telefonica will soon be selling an Android phone in Spain, but instead of the G1, it will be this HTC Dream. The innards are likely the same, but as you can see, the exterior has undergone some renovations. There is no release date yet, but when it does land on the shelves, the pricing is estimated to be between €0 and €199 depending on subscriber status and voice/data plan. It's nice to see Android continue to go global!

If everyone who says they are launching an Android phone actually launches an Android phone in the near future, the G1 is about to have lots and lots of company. One IS the loneliest number (poor G1), but how about between 6 and 8 Android phones from O2 Germany ALONE?

In another case of T-Mobile looking out for the customer, they've just announced their Equipment Installment Plan which allows you to pay off your T-Mobile handheld and/or accessories in four installments.

Before we moved over to the G1 & T-Mobile, we were AT&T users. So imagine our shock when we first called into T-Mobile customer service to ask some basic questions regarding the G1. The T-Mobile people were just. so. nice.
