T-Mobile G1 users seeing OTA update, but it's not Android 2.x

Phil Nickinson News Thursday, 11 March 2010

We're getting word that T-Mobile G1 users have been getting OTA updates over the past couple of days, but alas it's not "THE BIG ONE" to Android 2.0 or 2.1. Instead, it looks like it's a radio update, aka the infamous "call quality improvement."

Be sure to post your findings in...

T-Mobile gradually pushing out maintenance update for the G1

Phil Nickinson News Saturday, 27 February 2010

Nope, Android fans, the T-Mobile G1 isn't getting the almighty Android 2.1 update (or 2.0 for that matter) just yet. Instead, you can look forward to one of those lovely "maintenance updates." This one, dubbed DMD64, promises to improve call performance. So if you're the type...

T-Mobile G1 To Get Android 2.0 Update Soon ?

Casey Chan News Thursday, 21 January 2010

While more Android devices come out rocking Android 2.0 on launch and other Android phones announcing their intention to do so in the future, any news regarding the very first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, has been nonexistent. We figured that was an omen for bad news because why not announce that 2.0 is coming if it can eventually come, right? Plus, with

Phil Nickinson News Saturday, 16 January 2010

If you're one of our Canadian readers with an HTC Dream on Rogers with Android 1.5, stop what you're doing and read this, eh?

You should have by now been contacted by text message that there's an issue with completing 911 galls that's related to GPS location, and that a software fix is on the way. Here's the, erm, text of the text:

URGENT 911 calls: Please disable GPS location on your HTC Dream device to ensure all 911 calls complete. HTC is urgently working on a software upgrade and we will provide details shortly so...

Android 2.1 Ported To T-Mobile G1 ?

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 30 December 2009

Rumor alert! Rumor alert! Looks like an Android user has ported Android 2.1 to the device nearest and dearest to our hearts, the T-Mobile G1. Now we don't doubt that the T-Mobile G1, easily the most customizable Android device available, can get the 2.1 update but our impatience just wants us to see it for real, for real. Video will do but downloadable form is even better.

Rumor has G1 getting Android 2.0 update

Phil Nickinson News Sunday, 27 December 2009

Rumors are like elbows and other things around here, so we're going to swallow some salt with this one. But AndroidSPIN says it has an anonymous tipster with word that the HTC G1 on T-Mobile -- as in the very first commercially available Android phone -- will be getting an Eclair update. And that's not out of the realm of...

Hey, hey! Look at the video above, it's your friendly T-Mobile G1 running the brand spanking new Android 2.0 'Eclair'. It's not a final Android 2.0 build nor is it anywhere close to being an official release, but it's definitely still a sight to see. The amazing minds we have in the Android community decided to port over what they...

Wal-Mart Drops Price of T-Mobile G1 to $48.88, myTouch 3G to $98.88

Casey Chan News Monday, 12 October 2009

Likely in response to the launch of the HTC Hero on Sprint, Walmart has just dropped the price of the original Android phones. Both the T-Mobile G1 and the myTouch 3G received price drops and if you're a current T-Mobile customer wanting to get a taste of Android, it's as good a deal as you're going to find. The T-Mobile G1 is now $48.88 and the myTouch 3G is $98.88 (with new 2-year contract). It's a really great deal considering how many 'dumbphones' are offered for the same price.

T-Mobile Drops Price of T-Mobile G1 to $129.99, Amazon Still a Better Deal

Casey Chan News Thursday, 17 September 2009

T-Mobile just dropped the price of the T-Mobile G1, a device that's still near and dear to our hearts, to $129.99. If you've been following the riveting tale of price drops on the G1, it launched at $179.99 then lowered to $149.99 and is now at $129.99. T...

Will the T-Mobile G1 Continue to Receive Android Updates ?

Casey Chan News Tuesday, 18 August 2009

If reports indicating that the T-Mobile G1 is permanently stuck at Android 1.5 and won't receive further software updates like Donut and Eclair are true, it'll break the hearts of many Android users across the world. According to Android software engineer Dave Sparks, there'll be a time when developers "wont be able to fit the latest [Android] release on the G1's internal flash."

You've got to be kidding me. The T-Mobile G1 isn'...

T-Mobile G1 Gets a Minor Update

Casey Chan News Saturday, 18 July 2009

They haven't forgot about us yet. The T-Mobile G1 just got a minor software update that includes "permission and bug fixes" for developers, none of the fixes should affect regular users' usage. So what we're assuming is that this software update is the minor one before Android 2.0 Donut gets released and then we'll get another minor one after Donut to fix bugs on Android 2.0.

T-Mobile to Drop Price of T-Mobile G1 to $149.99

Casey Chan News Thursday, 04 June 2009

Starting June 5th, T-Mobile is going to drop the price of the T-Mobile G1 to $149.99 with new activation. This is a $30 price drop from the $179.99 price point the G1 launched with. Could this be a sign of clearing out inventory for the next onslaught of Android devices?

And though it's a significant discount from T-Mobile, we still recommend any potential G1 customer to head towards Amazon:

T-Mobile G1 v2 May Be the Samsung Bigfoot? Umm...

Casey Chan News Tuesday, 12 May 2009

This is getting a little hectic but reports are now surfacing that the T-Mobile G1 v2 may actually be the Samsung Bigfoot (and not a Motorola or HTC device). Confused, much? Cause we are too. But supposedly the specs line up with each other and one assumption led to another..

Honestly, we...

Is The T-Mobile G1 v2 Made By Motorola and Not HTC ?

Casey Chan News Tuesday, 12 May 2009

Though we had originally hypothesized that the T-Mobile G1 v2 would be the HTC Memphis prototype device, it turns out we were looking at the wrong company. The T-Mobile G1 v2 is not even from HTC. According to BGR, the T-Mobile G1 v2 may be a Motorola Device and NOT an HTC device like the original G1 was.

And yeah, we agree, to name a device a G1 v2 would...

T-Mobile G1 Gets Faked with No Slideout Keyboard - Huh?

Casey Chan News Monday, 27 April 2009

Here's a funny image to brighten your Monday--that picture above isn't a shot of the T-Mobile G1 but rather of a fake, knockoff version that not only fakes the hardware but also runs some knockoff version of Android. It doesn't come with a slideout hardware keyboard and um, what's the point of faking Android? It's free to license!

Either way, it's pretty hilarious and if anyone was to ever spot one of these in real life be sure to send it in!

T-Mobile G1 Hits a Million Units Sold!

Casey Chan News Thursday, 23 April 2009

Amidst all the disappointing news in T-Mobile's Q1 financial results was one lone bright spot--a milestone reached: the T-Mobile G1 had finally passed the 1 Million units sold in the USA. And though many may think that the G1 selling a million units since October isn't big a deal, realize the circumstances--T-Mobile is the smallest carrier in the US, its 3G network...

Stanford's Revolutionary Cinder OS Being Ported to the T-Mobile G1

Casey Chan News Thursday, 16 April 2009

Leave it to the kids at Stanford to cook up a new smartphone OS for mobile devices AND try to port it over to the T-Mobile G1. Even though we're Android-focused here at Android Central we can't help but geek out at a new mobile OS and its potential. We think that the smartphone market is much too young to plateau so early so it's refreshing to see a new take at the operating system.

So what is Stanford's Cinder OS? It's basically an OS ...

T-Mobile Bringing Back Upgrade Fees

Casey Chan News Tuesday, 14 April 2009

Rats. It looks like T-Mobile is bringing back upgrade fees. This is a bit of a downer since it comes off the rather good news of T-Mobile changing some rate plans and also reverses the news we reported back in December about upgrade fees being gone forever.

Though the $18 upgrade fee isn't necessarily a...

Android G1 Users Downloading More Than iPhone Users

Brian Hart News Monday, 06 April 2009

According to T-Mobile USA, G1 Android users downloaded an average of at least 40 applications for their phones while iPhone users averaged about 37 apps. There is no data as to retention of apps - G1 users may have downloaded their 40 apps, only to keep half that number, while iPhone users may retain more on their device, and vice versa.

What we DO know, however, is that the Android...

China Unicom Will Carry The HTC Dream aka G1 ?

Casey Chan News Thursday, 26 March 2009

It looks like China Unicom may have scored a coup against bigger rival China Mobile. They just might be the carrier in China that will launch the HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1) and the iPhone. Take that China Mobile!

There isn't an official confirmation but China Unicom has posted specs of the G1 and listed it as a supported handset. Getting on a Chinese carrier is almost guaranteeing Android a large slice of the worldwide mobile handset...

T-Mobile G1 is a Cash Cow for T-Mobile

Casey Chan News Thursday, 19 March 2009

You might have never guessed it. But the T-Mobile G1 is the biggest money making device for T-Mobile. According to a comScore report (via electronista), the G1 brings in the largest profit for T-Mobile while only being the 8th best selling T-Mobile device.

How is this possible? Well, the 'required' monthly data plan definitely juices up the numbers and puts...

Will the T-Mobile G2 Show Up at CTIA 2009 ?

Casey Chan News Friday, 13 March 2009

BGR is trying to put two and two together and predicting (with no sources, leaks, or tips) that the T-Mobile G2 is going to show up at CTIA. For those keeping score: the T-Mobile G2 is the HTC Magic and CTIA is a pretty huge mobile industry convention. What makes this interesting is that CTIA is right around the corner (April 1-3) and well, it does make a little sense.

HTC Dream Gets Different Look for Telefonica Spain

Brian Hart News Thursday, 12 March 2009

Does this smartphone look familiar? Hard to hide those lines, those curves, that little trackball. Telefonica will soon be selling an Android phone in Spain, but instead of the G1, it will be this HTC Dream. The innards are likely the same, but as you can see, the exterior has undergone some renovations. There is no release date yet, but when it does land on the shelves, the pricing is estimated to be between €0 and €199 depending on subscriber status and voice/data plan. It's nice to see Android continue to go global!
