It feels so good to be home! The Smartphone Round Robin is over and we're all back on our original devices, meaning I'm finally, finally done with Bolds, Fuzes, iPhones, & Treos! No more non touchscreens, closed systems, or resistive touch! I'm back on the most potential packed, exciting smartphone OS and do-it-all hardware available in today's smartphone market.

But like all the other devices in the Smartphone Round Robin, we're going to take a look at the T-Mobile G1 in a Video Review and then follow up with a comprehensive, in-depth written review that'll compare the G1 with the other devices and also examine the status of Android. So stay tuned to Android Central where it's going to be all T-Mobile G1 and Android once again.

This is an Official Round Robin Contest Post, Comment To Win a T-Mobile G1! – Details Here

Update: The Smartphone Round Robin isn't exactly over (the part where I have to use other phones is done, though). We're in the last round of the Round Robin so we'll be wrapping things up in the next few days, stay tuned!

The G1 is a quality phone. the build feels solid (it is ugggllly though) My co-worker and I(both middle school history teacher) both have smartphones. He has the G1, I have the Storm. We compare phones all the time. As much as I would like to knock his phone, the only things I can find to talk about are the looks(which is not that important), the fact that has no microsoft(which is in the works), and the materials(it’s still too early to tell if the sliding mechanism will hold up over time). So long story short.. if the G1 was on verizon, I probably would consider getting it.

The G1 has really grown on me during the course of the round robin. Can't wait to see how the platform evolves in 2009.

Great review. I'd like to have a G1 as a secondary phone to play around with. The Android platform is very promising though.

Great review man, though not as good as your Blackberry Bold review since that one I knew you weren't biased towards the Bold, which I guess can't really be said for the G1.

A lot of people hate on the "chin" but it doesn't bother me at all....what does bother is the look of the device. Not so much the basic look, but more so that it looks very segmented. I think going for a more solid look would have been better.

But that being said, I love the specs of the device and I look Android. To me Android has the power of Windows Mobile, but the slickness of the iPhone....which to me is just awesome.

Can't wait to see the final review comparing the G1 to all the other phones. Looks like a great phone.

I started seeing lag about a month into using the G1. From what I gather it is Android pausing while it opens and closes apps when internal memory is short (check yours in settings). In particular there are some memory hogging apps like the browser, the market and messaging that can take up space. Updates to Android and the browser engine may help although what we really need is more memory and access to the microSD card for app storage. In the meantime you can do things like clear the browser cache and delete the hundreds of stored messages.

i love the way the g1 looks and feels. its simple. and even thought thats apple`s clam to fame...the simple design...the iphone is anything but that. with its gaudy shiny black and chrome.

Even with all these reviews, I'm still not sure on whether the G1 is weak plastic or has excellent build quality. I wish all the reviewers would just be set on this issue.

Hm... weak plastic? It might be plastic but it's pretty solid. You gotta hold it in your hand to know for sure if it's solid enough for you.

Excellent video review! The G1 does seem much easier to use than windows mobile. I like it! I guess the only problem is that you wouldn't be able to type one handed. Sure would like to win one of these!!!

Good review. Seems like there are a lot of mixed signals between the plastic being weak or it being solid. G1 isnt the best looking phone but I think it's something you can get used to quickly.

I've gotta say, I've been liking the G1 more and more since I've been able to actually get my hands on one. I wouldn't necessarily say that the iphone design isn't simple, but I do appreciate the sleekness and uncluttered look of the G1.

LOL the iphone design isnt simple thats laughable but for anyone whos sayin this phone is good looking is insane the phone itself is a brick witha chin if this phone had a diffrent os you people would be bashing it i mean this sights name is android central not g1 central think about that

Casey,

Where were you? None of the previous reviewers changed my feelings toward the G1. Thanks to you I'm looking at the ducky in a more positive way.

Most people said the iPhone interface is a killer BUT if the iPhones got "this", or "that" it would be real phone.

Well... the G1 got the interface and also have "this" and "that". It's a real phone!!!

Someone should really review the G1 with all of the third party apps already installed, the first impression reviews really don't do the G1 justice.

I was really impressed with how fast those apps downloaded and installed themselves in the video. And it is cool how easily customizable it all is. You might make an android lover out of me yet!

I also like the satisfyingly crisp "snap" of the slider when you open it, but I still think the slanted way it opens plus that chin make the whole thing seem a bit off-kilter.

I hate my G1. It's clunky, ugly and no really amazing apps. Open source ISN'T that cool because nobody cares about writing apps for the G1 or any other open source platforms. They're all over the iPhone and going crazy trying to write the best apps for Apple. My girlfriend has the 3G iphone and I'm pretty jealous. The average user doesn't care about open source. There's a reason Photoshop is better than it's open source rival, Gimp. Simply more people use Adobe products which helps the software advance very rapidly. Just watch........- and while you watch, I'll switch to the clearly better iPhone.
