A quick look at the Vinsic Wireless Charger

We were about due for another wireless charger review, and this time we've got our hands on the Vinsic Wireless Charger. It's a bit larger than the average charging puck, but still keeps a low profile on any desk or nightstand. Measuring in just over 6-inches in length and nearly 3.5-inches in width, it fits every device we have nicely, including the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The entire charging pad is made of a smooth plastic that steals your fingerprints with a quickness, but is extremely lightweight — weighing in at nearly 3oz.

The top of the wireless charger features a rubber circle in the middle that helps prevent your mobile device from sliding off the surface. While that portion does its job well, the same can't be said for the opposite side. There are 4 tiny plastic feet on the bottom that slightly elevate the pad from whatever surface you place it on, but they definitely don't do much for keeping the pad in one spot. Every time I placed my device down to charge, it would scoot in a different direction. Maybe not a huge deal, but the fact they left out some simple rubber feet to prevent this is disappointing.

You get a standard 28-inch microUSB charging cable with the charging pad, and as expected — no charging block. Vinsic even recommends using a wall adapter with an output rating of at least 1.5A for the "perfect wireless charging experience". You'll find the charging port at the top of the pad, and 2 LED's towards the bottom. As soon as you plug it in, a red light kicks on — and stays on. When you place a device down to charge, an extra green light accompanies the other. If you're planning on using this on your nightstand, you may want to consider covering these up with some tape, because they're a bit on the bright side.

Upon many attempts to charge my Samsung Galaxy S6 edge while wearing the Spigen Slim Armor Case, I wasn't able to get it to work. And by no means is this case bulky, either. A little unfortunate to have to remove the case each time, but there it is.

Pros

  • Slim design
  • Cable-free charging

Cons

  • Not case-friendly
  • Bright lights
  • Slides on most surfaces

The verdict

For an inexpensive wireless charging pad ($15.90), this one is just OK. It's a pretty cut and dry design that leaves a lot to be desired, but in the end it does what it's supposed to do. If you're not a fan of covering up your Qi-compatible device with a case, this may be worth checking out for the price.
