A quick look at the revamped Gear app for Samsung's latest circular wearables
The Samsung Gear S2 is official, and we've gone hands-on with the latest Tizen wearable from the Korean electronics giant, which is compatible with Android phones running version 4.4 and above of the OS. Naturally, a new Gear smartwatch needs a new Gear application on the phone side, and below we have a quick look at some of the features of the latest companion app.
A fully-featured app for a more open Samsung Gear experience.
Like Android Wear and others, Samsung's app lets you change and customize watch faces, control which notifications are sent to your wrist, and even have the phone automatically launch the app related to a notification when powered on. There's also a section for syncing photos and music to the wearable, and tracking exactly how much storage space apps and media are using on the device.
When it comes to messaging, you can configure canned responses for declining a call or responding to an SMS. And you can back up and reset your watch from the reset menu within the companion app. And interestingly for developers, there's also an "unknown sources" toggle for using apps not from Samsung's store with your Gear S2.
It's unclear whether this is the same app that'll run on supported non-Samsung phones — we demoed the app on a Note 5 — but regardless, you're looking at a fairly complete suite of functionality should you pair your Gear S2 with a Samsung phone.
