In Short

Android 7.0 Nougat the next major version of Android following Marshmallow. Nougat brings major new features including split-screen multi-window support, direct-reply notifications and bundled notifications, plus improvements to the Doze feature (which extends battery life) and changes to the way Java is used and implemented, including support for Java 8.

Under-the-hood improvements such as support for the Vulkan gaming APIs should make Nougat devices even faster for gaming. Meanwhile, Android's 2016 release will introduce Google's VR platform, Daydream, on certified handsets.

Google unveiled the Android Beta Program with the first Nougat preview build, which lets developer devices receive over-the-air update of future preview releases — as well as enroll in the Developer Preview in the first place. So if you don't know how to flash developer images manually, you're weren't left out in the cold this time around.

Android Nougat was released as an update for the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C and General Mobile 4G.
