Interface refresh lets the app scale well on devices with a range of screen sizes

It's been a while since we've seen a major update to Instagram, but an update slated to be released today is going to give the photography app a fresh look and improved performance. The main focus is under-the-hood peformance — Instagram says that the profile screen will load twice as fast in the latest version, and the app itself is now half the size after optimizing.

"In taking time to polish our designs, we’ve worked to make sure that Instagram feels native and at home on any Android device."

On the design side, Instagram is working to make the app easier to use on devices of nearly any size with some smart interface choices. Often-used buttons will be easier to reach on devices with larger screens, but interface chrome won't take up too much room on lower-end devices with small screens. The app will remain familiar to anyone who has spent time in Instagram before, but with some appreciable improvements.

Instagram version 5.1 will be available today in Google Play, although at the time of posting it isn't live just yet. Keep an eye on the Play Store listing at the link above to get it as soon as possible.

I'm gonna update but it appears the last update "took away" the ability to share pictures with any entity (like Google +) that's not the few that they allow. I'm hoping they don't take anything else away.

Another iOS 7 designed app ported to android. Awesome /s

Looks like iOS 7 and I love it!!! More devs need to do this! Finally good looking apps in Android. Always hated how ugly apps are.. :-)

I think the KitKat design is very attractive

KitKat is good on speed, but most of Android apps are ugly as F... I like Twitter (close to iOS but still not as good), Instagram here looks great, maybe the best looking app in Google play store.. Wish Facebook to update like iOS.. Now it's disgusting to watch and use.. This is only my opinion of course.. In my vision of perfect world I am using Android with iOS apps and they are coming in the same time, not always LATER for Android.. :-)

Your opinion is wrong.

It's an opinion. It can't be wrong, it is based on subjectivitiy. Just like yours.

If you want fast updates, clean interface, and smooth apps get an iPhone. Just that simple.

See here is what still pisses me off though... All these updates for a better this and that, however when it comes to doing the same thing the iOS version does, it doesn't even compare. For one I want the ability to add multiple video clips by slicing then adding to fit in a video much like you would for a highlight film even... Instead whatever you trim off one clip is all you get. And I don't want a third party app that's complicated in order to achieve that. Can we please get an update like that with that ability? Don't tell me it ain't possible.

They need something even more basic... landscape support. It's a square cropped pic that should be able to fit in any orientation...this would make it very appealing to tablet users. Pic on the left and comments on the right. Then again, the current app doesn't even support 180 degree rotation... so I can't expect too much at once.

"In taking time to polish our designs, we’ve worked to make sure that Instagram feels native and at home on any Android device." - feels native? not sure they know what native apps feel like. I'm kinda tired of instagram being lazy, gonna design a holo version, if any dev wants to take it up with me, be my guest.

Great new design, but can't get them to fix the bug or even reply to my email. On both LG and Samsung low light images with saturated colors when applying filter and brightness are simply unusable.

This is not at home on android. Doesn't follow android design at all. They just favor iOS so that's all we're ever gonna get....iOS ports. Facebook needs a good overhauling but that'll probably be another iOS 7 port as well.
