HTC is planning to launch a successor to the RE camera accessory next year. In an interview with Focus Taiwan, HTC North Asia president Jack Tong announced that the manufacturer is working on a new standalone model aimed at the "mass consumer market."
Tong mentioned that the RE camera's success in the Taiwanese market, where it is launching tomorrow, will serve as an indicator to the level of interest consumers have in the accessory. HTC is predicting that about 5 percent of Taiwan's 8 million smartphone buyers would be interested in buying the RE camera, and Tong said that if the 5 percent threshold can be crossed, a future model will be "easier to sell."
The current RE camera features a 16 MP CMOS sensor with a 146-degree field of view that can take full-HD video and stills, and includes slow-motion mode and time-lapse. The accessory connects to your smartphone, which is used as a viewfinder. You can still take images and videos without pairing with a smartphone thanks to the built-in microSD card slot.
What would you be looking for in an updated model of the RE camera?
