HTC: Quick on the troll, perhaps too quick

Or: Lessons in speaking before you know all the details #TweetersRemorse

In the midst of today's Samsung Galaxy S5 announcements at MWC (right around when Samsung was talking about the Gear 2 and Gear Fit), HTC decided to fire a social media shot across Samsung's bow. You might call it an attempt at trolling, and for about half an hour it was a pretty successful troll:

Buyer's remorse: Coming soon to S5 owners. March 25 #HTCOneUp

There's just one problem: 30 minutes after HTC sent out that cheeky tweet, Samsung unveiled the release date for the Samsung Galaxy S5: April 11. Two weeks after the new HTC One is due to be unveiled. Sometimes it pays to bite your tongue for a few minutes and see how things play out.

HTC: Quick on the troll, perhaps too quick

Well in HTC's defense, Samsung trolled HTC last year and declared the One to be a flop before it was announced. I do agree with the view in this article.

Buyer's remorse is when you buy something and realize it blows in comparison to alternatives or it just doesn't live up to the hype. It doesn't matter which is released first.

Yeah, exactly. I read this article, and I think maybe it should be deleted. On March 25th, something is going to happen that will make anyone who owns, pre-ordered, or will own an S5 regret that decision. Besides, is March 25th the LAUNCH date or ANNOUNCEMENT date? This article was a bit premature, ironically. Wow.

There are several reasons for why samesung sells much more phones than htc even if the htc one is not worst than the S4 and articles like this one (not only here) are one of them. After all, samesung WAS CONVICTED in court for paying bloggers to bash the htc one in several "specialized sites".

Whether it's the launch date or announcement date is irrelevant. Either way, the S5 still won't be available yet so HTC's jibe still doesn't make any sense.

The sales numbers compared to the S4 y0.. or becuz HTC was bleeding cash. Even though that was due to higher costs for conducting business. Never mind that it is HTC's best selling device to date and manufacturing had to be increased due to high demand.

They were right because i bought a ONE - and sold it a few weeks later because it was CRAP!

I wanted to give it to my wife first - but even she refused to give up her S2 for that pile of... you know

Posted via Android Central App

Plastic vs. Solid unibody aluminum construction = no contest! I don't care if the plastic POS had an effing V8 in it, it is still a plastic POS...

The Galaxy S2 is legendary, and will forever be a star in the mobile phone hall of fame with the 5110, 3210 and various others :)
I got an S2 at launch and never gave it up until something truly worthy of replacing it came along - And eventually it came - the Note 3 :D

MWC doesn't always have to be announcing the biggest surprises.
In addition HTC had a set march 25th date in NYC for another event prior to MWC. Maybe that's when they're gonna announce it.

Actually, the new HTC One has two cameras, so they are able to focus on themselves and on the S5 at the same time! :D

Ohhhh boy! There's that stupid internet word "troll" again.

Anyway, so long as HTC continues to embed batteries and memory, I won't even begin to consider their smartphones. Leave this embedded battery crap for Apple's products!

I don't use, or acknowledge the word ""troll"".

(mind-blown) lol

Posted from my "Gift from God" Note 3, my "God-Given" iPad Mini 2, or my "Risen" Samsung Chromebook.

Wrong. He doesn't use. We don't know what it is he doesn't use. Maybe weed, maybe full-fat milk or maybe it's products made in Taiwan. ALSO, he doesn't acknowledge the word "troll". Two separate things.

That's because it slapped em in the face when the S4 wasn't near the next big thing.

I mean really, the S3 sells better.

Maybe the post is towards those that are pre registering... S5 back is still plastic

Posted via Android Central App

At least Samsung maintains consistency with their old school, jankey menu button and bass awkward "go back" button.

I'm not too happy with my purple tint issue with my camera. Other than that, I loved my One, but am willing to give the SGS5 a try.

You have to give props to HTC for at least trying. But, yeah, unless the One 2014 is to be released shortly after being announced, then that "shot across the bow" will backfire quickly.

HTC isn't saying that the S5 was going to be sold prior to their announcement event. They are simply saying that on March 25th, they will show you why buying the S5 will give you buyers remorse.

Buyers remorse implies you have already purchased the product, especially in this case they address it as "S5 Owners" Not "Potential S5 Owners" Otherwise the tweet should say, "Possible buyers remorse coming to Potential S5 Owners" and that just sounds ridiculous.
Edit: I am agreeing with the article, I believe HTC jumped the gun, and was assuming it would be out prior to their announcement..

People can pre-order the G5 as of today, so i guess the statement still stands. Come to think of it, by March 25th pre-orders would have been fully implemented. I love my HTC One, its not perfect, but its awesome. I will admit that i am a bit disappointing by the leaks of the M8 if they are indeed true. Would really love a smaller bezel and remove the htc logo taking up useless space for more screen real-estate. But in any case, i will wait to see what they will be bringing on March 25th. Impress me HTC, again.

Pre-order as of today? No you can't, you can "register for updates" on the S5.

I don't use, or acknowledge the word ""troll"".

It's still there though no matter the context. He should remove it before his head explodes.

I doubt HTC could have got rid of the bezel without compromising on some other aspect of the design, most likely battery size. So the logo isn't "taking up useless space", it is placed in a space that would otherwise have been blank.

+1 but the person in the screenshot is obviously holding a Samsung, lol. so I can see why he was offended enough to post an article about it. everyone else with their Sony, LG, HTC, Motorola phones obviously don't take it the same way.

Posted via Android Central App

The bottom line is, "Who cares"? I'm typing this right now from my Flagship HTC One right now and it is virtually flawless! I'm sure Samsung phones are good as well. So don't confuse me for trolling.

HTC made a similar statement last year. How did that work out? Oh yeah.... Samsung ate their breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks!

Good for you. I've done it a dozen times w/ the 3 different Samsung phones in my house. I've yet to exchange my launch-day One.

Are you kidding haha go on this site called youtube and watch the thousands of videos of people posting about problems on their Samsungs lol you must be kidding right? All oem's have faulty units there was problems with the battery covers on the s4 when it launched. Plus purple/pink tint problems on many galaxy s3 models.

HTC one is ugly. And let's see which of the 2 companies is still losing money

Posted via Android Central App

I bet you're ugly, pics to prove otherwise!

And what the hell does financials have to do with the phones themselves? Oh that's right, nothing.

Easy to make money when you piggyback off of others designs. Look at the flappy bird clones.

And before you try and trash talk, I was once a huge Samsung fan. I've owned every Galaxy S that has come out thus far and even both of my televisions are Samsung products. Started losing interested in them shortly after I bought my S4. Phones are meh and their tablets are junk unless you want to pay an arm and a leg for one.

Posted via Android Central App

I bet you're ugly, pics to prove otherwise!

And what the hell do financials have to do with the phones? You would think with the kind of money Samsung is making that they'd be able to hire a decent design team, instead their still throwing top end components into happy meal quality boxes... Lol

Not interested in either of these devices but the s5 will trounce the HTC in sales just like before. And the HTC faithful will defend it and say sales are not everything. Sure they are not...

Sent from my Moto X!

Psh.. Doesn't matter which is better HTC or Samsung.. I think Samsung & HTC will lose to Sony & LG..

I love my HTC One and would not trade it in for anything currently in the market including the S5. Its going to be hard for the M7 to win me over unless its got some mind blowing new feature, which I doubt.

M8 and it will be everything the One is, and more. Maybe not enough to convince you to upgrade immediately but certainly better than the One

Posted via Android Central App

Doubtful, based on current reporting. HTC may have a +-3 week head start. Watch for FCC certification and carrier date specific announcements. .

Lol! When I saw HTCs post. Tmobile was the very first thing to pop into my mind. Glad I wasn't alone in that. Hahahaha

Posted via Android Central App

Pre-orders! Duh! Obviously the writer of this article is a Sammy fanboy! #writersfail #writersremorse

Posted via Android Central App

That's how I see it. I love Samsung and my Note 3, but the S5 has been the most disappointing phone reveal I have ever seen for a new flagship device

Posted via Android Central App

Either way we the consumers win. Competition is alive and well in the smartphone market. It's not just about pricing it's about quality, performance, aesthetics, and usability. Without competition it would sell us whatever they wanted to sell us and not with the buying public demanded. We vote with our dollars, yen, pesos, rubles, euros....

I don't know how this is bad for HTC... Samsung had an extremely disappointing unveiling today. If HTC has anything as good as the One was last year, people would regret pre-ordering the s5

Posted via Android Central App

I like the HTC One. Love the design and the solid construction. I've been a fan of HTC from the Windows Mobile days. However, I'm stuck on the Galaxy Note line now. I couldn't give up the features and screen size. Samsung really should have waited to bring the S5 to market. You don't need a new product update every year.

Well, per Android Central, you can pre-register now for the S5 at Radio Shack, which makes HTC's tweet kind of reasonable. Kind of.

Posted via Android Central App

The new HTC One rendition seems like it might end up being a much better evolution of its predecessor than the S5 vs the S4..guess that ll make recommendations a lil easier this time of year. Thx Sammy.

Posted via Android Central App

HTC saw the internal memory before hand and launched the preemptive strike. Hopefully they win this time around....doubt it.

Posted via Android Central App

They are clearly referring to pre-orders. This is clearly pointed at fanboys who are itching to get the newest Samsung crap.

He did indeed. That's actually what led to him inventing the internet. He needed to share this new "trolling" thing with the masses.

I don't get it. The HTC device is scheduled for unveiling on March 25th thus the date they listed. And they are predicting buyers remorse for all s5 purchasers. Regardless of when their phone releases the buyers remorse will be there. If their phone releases before the s5 awesome... You'll still have remorse if you choose the s5. I guess HTCs intentions were hard to decipher...

I don't think they meant specifically if they will regret it when the HTC One (2014) comes out, but anyone that buys the S5 will have buyers remorse because it's a Galaxy S5.

Posted via Android Central App

honestly i've always thought the htc one was a nicest android phone whenever i've used them in the store. The galaxy phones are popular but lookswise i find them a bit bland.

Not much of a fan of HTC and I despise these kinds of marketing tactics (mostly used by Samsung actually), but is this writer stupid? The M8 will be UNVEILED on the March 25th, not RELEASED. Most likely it will still appear in shops after the S5's April 11th street date so there is still potential buyer's remorse.

Am I the only one who thinks the only failure on HTC's part was that they thought that Samsung might actually ship a phone less than 6 weeks after they announced it?
