Behold, the HTC One M8 Google Play edition. Same M8, less HTC. Look, there's not a lot here you haven't already read in our comprehensive HTC One review. Same 5-inch display. Same loud speakers. Same tall but sleek form factor. The difference here is software.

And as has been the case with other GPe devices, things get a little interesting here. While we tend to think of Google Play editions as "pure Google" devices, though that's not quite the case. There's still a little HTC code left over. That's a good thing, actually. The question is whether you want a phone stripped of some of the features that make it unique — and that explain some of the hardware peculiarities inherent to the M8.

Anybody hankering to get their hands their hands on a developer edition of the HTC One (M8) will only have until the end of tonight to get one at the promotional price of $50 off. The developer edition has an easily unlockable bootloader and doesn’t have any of that nasty carrier bloatware on top.

If you've been patiently awaiting word that your Google Play edition HTC One M8 has shipped, well, there's a good chance it did. Yesterday. We just got a heads up that ours will arrive today (with overnight shipping), so we'll soon get a chance to see how Google's working the Duo Camera features, and whether the popular Dot View case still works. Just last week we reported that the Gold version of the HTC One M8 would land at Carphone Warehouse in the UK by April 7. Fast forward a few days and that seems to have improved to a new expected delivery date of April 2, with the phone going on sale online and on the phone today. So, if you've already pre-ordered one you might be receiving your shiny new handset a little earlier than you expected.

The phone's launched with a solid supply (unlike its predecessor) and what met with solid demand around in HTC's home market of Taiwan as well as in the United States and United Kingdom. You've already read about the HTC One M8 Dot View case — the innovative folio that shows information and protects your phone will maintaining an interesting level of functionality, all while still looking cool. Now watch the video.

As you'll see, though, there's still the matter of the front cover not sitting flush against the back of the phone, due to one being flat and the other decidedly curved. And that's a pretty major bone of contention for us.
