And there it is, folks. Live from Mobile World Congress.
More in our HTC One M9 liveblog!
Hey it is the M8. Woohoo.
Posted via the Android Central App
EXACTLY my thought. looks like theyre going in the direction of apple now. release the same looking phone for 5 years straight then make it an inch taller by claiming how its brand new and revolutionary
LOL i do think think one has a bigger battery.
big fail htc, big fail. even the damn softkeys are the same.
Why the hell do the softkeys matter? The S6 has the same buttons as the S5...
oh have you seen the s6 yet?
How exactly would they change?
I just can't get over the same design, now 3 years in a row. The M7, then the M8, and now the M9, all pretty much the same wrap around metal design, with silly HTC logo bar at the bottom
I don't think HTC can do well, by keeping the exact same design three years in a row. The M9 will show it's age quicker, and look stale after awhile.
What happened to this ?
Well, having used both the M7 and M8 I can tell you they're not the same design. But I get the impression you were ready to hate this phone before it was even announced so I won't bother after this.
I guess I was on the evleaks bandwagon. He blew up my balloon and HTC popped it.
They are not exactly the same but they are not drastically different either. There is nothing here to get excited about when it comes to the design. I love the phone so dont get me wrong but they do need to change it up in a way the design just pops. Nokia was really bad about pushing out phones that almost mirror each other. Regardless this is hands down one of the best phones on the market.
They are very close, but I see what you are saying. But you also have to admit that the M9 changed less from the M8 than the change from M7 & M8

what happened was BS rumors and fake renders.
They were bs rumors and fake renders
Posted by my soon to be retired Note 3
If a change in design isn't necessitated for functionality, then it's a waste of effort. I'd be more interested in a change of materials more than the look. If AC has taught us anything about the One over its past two iterations, it's that an all metal body does not a Phone of Steel make.
Posted with the sexy GN4.
It's not a waste of effort if you want people to get excited about your product and buy it. These aren't socks HTC is trying to sell.
6 generations of iPhones tells us that generally what people want is some vague concept of "new" and "better" and don't care about huge shifts in aesthetics. We like to think that Android fans are different, but 95% of us are about as sophisticated as camp iPhone in this regard.
Wtf?! No M9 for me then.
So if they put the same exact specs as in the m8 with different design you would have gotten the m9 ? They are a little different but specs are awesome.
I don't know. But 600-700€ (probably) for a clone of a phone I already have and which already runs smoothly? I'll have to check the specs.
It's not about the specs. It's about the experience and making sure it fits your needs. If the M8 does everything that the M9 is going to do with lesser specs, then why get the M9?
Posted on my OnePlus One
The specs help with the experience so yeah it is about the specs, also sense works very well as an android over lay. People main gripe is the appearance of the phone nothing else. I will admit the one render that is floating out there with the all glass front screen,I hoped it was it but hey.
HTC is just digging their grave one year at a time. Smh
What, by offering extremely well crafted devices with excellent software?? Lol. Just because they don't have the marketing muscle that others do doesn't mean they're doomed by giving the m9 an iterative upgrade. The M8 was already a great phone. It just needed a better camera which it got this time around.
Posted via the Unrivaled Note 4 or Tab S 10.5
Should be M8s or some other iPhone type BS name.
Pink! Haha that's pretty awesome
True. At least they aren't launching the pink one 3 months after I buy one for my wife.
No real reason to get the M9 if you already own the M8. Unless of course you absolutely need a better camera. Truly disappointing, HTC could have at least removed the HTC black bar at the bottom.

Um much much much better processor more ram which is DDR4, larger battery. It's like going from a v6 vehicle to a v8 those 2 extra cyclinders make a difference. Lmbo!!
HTC Math: 9=8.
Would love to know the behind the scenes details, as to why HTC didn't go balls out on a new cooler design, than just copying the M7 / M8 again for the third year in a row ? I bet a lot of people will be questioning why they kept the same deign, after they realize sales aren't as good as the M8 this year. I mean the lame HTC black bar logo, I surely thought that would be gone from the M9, but yawn, it's still there.
Or why not go with the Nexus 9 sort of style that HTC made, and use that for the M9.
And then saying Sense 7 will be available for older HTC phones, down the road later this yera at some point. WTF :( why not pull an Apple or Nexus, and release the update for your previous generation phones at the same time, as the M9 launches ?
I'd venture to guess it's because that same body has brought them back to profitability.
Very underwhelming! I am so,so disappointed, that words fail me just now! I just watched a video of a concept for the m9 and that was what the phone should have been. All glass front, front facing speakers ,duel rear camera, fabulous colors like black with red trim and buttons. Just very very sad.
I agree. I think the Evleaks rendering had spoiled me a bit in a sense of knowing what the phone could have been.
I assume evleaks will stay in retirement now
At least they're staying true to their design and not trying to model their phone after an iPhone like (potentially) some other phone manufacturers... We'll find out later today I guess.
Thing is, the iPhone 6 copied the M7 (back). Now, the only people who are copying HTC are HTC.
Agreed why change when the others are trying to copy you? Which is why I kinda understand the method to their madness. I hope they sell a ton of these.
That (M7) was two years ago.
I want that HTC Grip!
That's disappointing. The EVLeaks render was guaranteed to be my next phone as long as it had the internals that could be expected from a 2015 flagship. Now, I'll wait and see what the S6 has to offer and still consider the Note 4
I love my Note 4, but honestly, if you don't have plans to really use the S Pen, then there's not a lot of reason to go with the Note IMO. I bought it specifically for this feature. It's a great device, and I think I'll be a Note user for life, but aside from S Pen, I don't think it's that much more remarkable than other flagships.
The camera and battery life are the only other selling point that an average user may care about.
I don't get the black bar hate. Is this just something non-m8 owners obsess over? I've had mine since it was released and it isn't something that I even notice.
It's ugly and a waste of space.
It actually is not a waste of space. Due to the unibody design all of the antennas and digitizer reside there. If you have seen iFixit's teardown of the M7 and M8 it shows that every bit of space is occupied.
No, m8 owners as well. Love my m8 but I hate the black bar as well.
It's similar to people who obsess over Sammys use of hardware buttons.
A 20mp camera.... With NO OIS?! That stupid black logo bar under the screen??
"No compromise" my ass. So disappointed :(
I agree...No OIS is a huge disappointment. Inexcusable.
Yeah, why would they skip on the OIS with a major camera overhaul? I figured it was a lock at this point to include it. So disappointing.
Plenty of haters here, and I honestly get why you feel that way... but as someone that's been a Samsung user for years, the HTC One series would be new to me. I love the design, it screams premium. I'm honestly considering it for my upgrade later this year, but first I need to see what Samsung has done with the S6 in a couple of hours! ;)
I'm with you. You can't beat the premium build HTC has.
No hate, just honesty. I own the M8, I've had it since day one.
Exactly! I've used the S3,Note 2, and Currently using the S5. And I can't wait to get the M9 and throw this S5 out the door. Laggy piece of shit!
The black bar lives... :/
BLAH. maybe Samsung can peak my interest...... This whole vr thing.
I like the design personally. I think they choose to evolve rather than recreate every year. It probably saves a lot of time and money. It's worked for Apple and until recently Samsung.
It looks very, VERY similar to the M9.
Camera is a huge upgrade, but where is OIS? C'mon, Samsung and LG already have it on their phones!
Speakers? Yeap, Dolby 5.1.
I mentioned that if the M9 had a better camera and speakers, I'm sold, but right now, I'm not really sold ATM. I'm not interested in the S6 either if they will omit both removable batteries (that I'm not really crazy about) and a microSD card slot (that is an absolute MUST for me in future smartphones). That leaves LG to wow me with the G4. And I'm really happy with my recent purchase of a G3. (It's for my dad)
HTC logo still there... Tsk tsk
Wait, HTC AND VALVE?!
I prefer Sense over Touchwiz, and think HTC designs better phones than Samsung. But this year that may change. I think an all new metal designed S6 will destroy this M8 S I mean M9.
i hope they at least fixed the shitty signal strength the m8 suffered from. probably not as this is the m8 with a new camera.
The said the M9 has antenna placement like the M7 has.
I guess we can't be too upset, really. All the complaining about the black bar last year was from people on tech sites, like all of us here. They fixed the thing that everyone else on the planet was complaining about - the camera.
And just like the M9 was already being designed when the M8 was released last year, so too is the M10 being designed now. Hopefully they saw some of the better renders out there and are making the M10 look more like those. Sense7 looks awesome, though.
Apple have done OK with a similar design over the last few years.
HTC is a business and want to make money. I'm tempted want to see some hands on first and the AC review.
No OIS then I'm out. Use my camera all the time and OIS is one of, if not the most important feature of the camera. HTC always have to mess the camera up. Shame as I am due an upgrade soon and really REALLY don't want a Samsung.
Have to wait another month to wait for the LG or wait until autumn for the next nexus.
Not including OIS is also a major disappointment for me. I have an M7 that was exchanged for my EVO LTE for free and I didn't do an upgrade to the M8 because I could take better videos and photos with the EVO LTE which didn't have OIS whereas the M7 does have OIS. I've also been enjoying the brilliant HTC Sense UI since the OG EVO.
All other aspects of the HTC One M9 are outstanding especially the multiple award winning design and front facing stereo Boomsound speakers yet the ability to take great photos and smooth videos is, for me, an extremely important criteria.
I'm going to reserve judgment until self testing and reviews instead of buying the M9 immediately upon release as planned. I too may have to consider alternatives. GRRR!
Oh what an inspiration they had! http://versus.com/en/htc-one-m9-vs-htc-one-m8 .. But they did definitely help out Samsung with this release..
they didn't help sammy with anything if the rumored $800+ price point is right.
If people are buying on contract or financing, then the full price is kinda irrelevant.
I've been a Samsung guy for a while, was hoping that it looked like the EVLEAKS render. I thought maybe HTC was trying to trick us since they kept hyping it up. Oh well, definitely not getting it.
HTC has never hyped up leaks.
Obviously you're a myopic 'dilusinary' butthurt Samsung troll.
I really like the black border bezels on the top and bottom of the screen. Im glad that Im not the only one who doesnt like a clean look. When I look at my screen I want to be distracted by bezels, company branding, a stupid big ass 'possibly inferior' sensor...
You mad bro? Lol.
I have really enjoyed my time with HTC. Sense has been great and their phones have had great support by talented devs at xda.
im not trying to trash HTC because I want to stay with them, but I'm not gonna be able to commit two more years to big bezels and a screen to body ratio that isn't even competitive on launch.
Come on HTC, you've proven with the One X and M7 that you can do better!
Incremental design change, but I like the two-tone metal. Having said that, I've decided to stick with my m7 for now, and the reason is simple: Form factor. I want premium specs and design in a phone I can use with one hand.
Why can't any manufacturer make a smaller version of their flagship? (without sacrificing specs)
Sony did with the Z3 mini.
Yawns... Bring on the s6 the showstopper
I don't think it will be the showstopper if these are true
1) The S6 *will* not feature a removable battery and a microSD card slot.
2) The battery *will* be 200mAh smaller than the S5 (somewhat offset by the power consumption of the Exynos 7)
3) The device *will* have an insane price-tag.
^^^ THEY'RE ALL RUMORS, SO DON'T TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY UNTIL THE REVEAL LATER ^^^
Wait till the reveal... That's what they said about the M9... And boy were we shocked! Lol, I'm a little disappointed, but not gonna trip about it too much...
Well, what I said were sadly true...
Goddammit Samsung. Way to ruin it.
Love it! My next phone.
Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.
God, is this comment section the sewers of the android community? So far from what I've seen, they have fixed (most) of the problems that plagued the m8. If the design isn't ugly, why fix it?
Exactly. The premium design should stay. They were ahead of their time, other manufacturers are just starting to catch up. *cough iPhone cough*
The design is ugly. That black bar doesn't belong unless there are capacitive buttons.
I guess rumors of the M9 Plus were bogus. Thanks for nothing evleaks.
Out of every android phone ive owned, the htc phones have always had a lag free smooth interface. I dont mind so much the aesthetics not being altered too much just as long as the phone performs the way it should. My biggest gripe with the m8 was the camera, if the m9 actually has a good camera i think it will be a winner
HTC= Help This Company
HTC = Happy To Clone
disappointed but not shocked. hopefully the s6 won't have too much bloat like they promised. hopefully they'll run with evleaks design next year, I just can't get over the black bar, can care less about speakers on a phone
HTC is screwed. M8 rehash won't gain market share. Makes them look the opposite of innovative.
That was pretty boring.
Wait, no plus/ultra?!?! WHYYYYYYY?!?!?!?! I've waited for HTC to get with the program... But alas... I guess I have to begrudgingly give the Note 4 a hard look...
Make it bigger and give it a stylus and I'm in. I love the Samsung Note line too much
No mention of OIS, at all, or micro SD
This goes to show that EvLeaks has no clue what he is talking about. Once again! Lololol
I think it's so funny that like 4 years ago Android users would say that design didn't matter, and what mattered was functionality. And here we are, 4 years later, with you guys whining about the design being the same every year. It's well built, very good looking, extremely fast, has a bigger battery and two apparently FANTASTIC cameras! F*ck the design, the phone is awesome and if HTC hadn't given up on Brazil I'd buy it in a heartbeat! Because of these circumstances, I'm likely buying the Xperia Z4, which will have a similar design to every iteration from the Z series, and I couldn't care less. I like the design of the Z3 and with a better camera it would already be the perfect phone!
It's because the M8 was already great. This is still great, but not significantly better. That's not a terrible thing, just disappointing.
I don't understand the a complaints... Everyone jizzed their pants over there M8 design. If they didn't release a new phone this year at all, most of us sporting the M8 would continue to carry it into 2016. Now, though, we have an option to upgrade the processor, camera, speakers, functionality, and dot view on our phones without giving up the beautiful design. Yes they should have obliterated the black bar and I would have loved a finger print scanner, but this IS an upgrade. I'm excited to get mine.
I guess no one here would ever be seen driving a Porsche 911. I mean, the body has barely changed in 40 years! What a piece of crap!
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The look of the phone is loved the world over. As for the black bar that all of you seem to think they have put there just to bother you, it has already been explained that every square millimeter of the phone's insides is taken, and the black bar gives it the little bit of extra room it needs for the internals. Would you rather they have a screen that doesn't confirm to the proper aspect ratio? Taking out the bar means taking out something else to get back that room (likely the speakers, which are another big selling point on the phone). If there is no OIS, that is a let down, but aside from that, this phone is without question the phone to beat right now.
While I agree with you I almost wish they'd go back to the M7s capacitive buttons. People would be a little more forgiving I think but of course the on screen button people would complain.
Tired old design. Pass.
Damn the hate is strong here! Did this phone blow me away? No. Does it need to? No. Will I recommend this to someone who is getting a new phone or upgrading? Yes. My M8 is fine for me but this has intrigued my wife and she has a S5.
However... The new HTC M9 will be the faster phone in 2015, with Q810, 3GB RAM and Sense 7
is guarantee to be mostly unbeatable.
Even if no one can tell the difference from the naked eye with last year phones right?
This will almost surely end HTC... to bad though.
I'll say almost but sadly that may be the case
I gotta agree with HTC on this. They actually listened to their customers and are catching hell for it.
The main complaints on the M8 were the camera and perhaps the internal space.
For the M9, they upgraded EVERYTHING except for the appearance (The main thing they got rave reviews about).
Why fix what isn't broken?
For those that say the evleaks renders were hot I'd have to agree, BUT it's easy to design and render a fake when you don't have to fill it with actual internals. The speakers on the evleaks fakes were going to be impossible to do. They were just too close to the outer edge.
I think people should be more pissed at evleaks for trolling us all.
HTC needs new customers not just the loyalists
Needy greedy bashful comments... tsk tsk from those who buy a new smartphone every year. I came from a 4 year old BlackBerry curve & jumped to the M7. Now I may jump to the M9. My point is, maybe if you waited a few years down the road & skipped a generation or two of a smartphone line, you would be excited for the new iterative design process & specs.
Posted via the HTC One M7
HTC said if Apple and Samsung can do it so can we! Not cool. I hope Samsung finally changes that today and brings more to the table. Specifically the S series.
Had been waiting on this for a lot of months before upgrading my contract and find this phone so underwhelming. The black bar at the bottom and top should be the same size for uniformity, but the bottom is too thick making the device non-uniform and therefore athestically unpleasing. The speaker grills are a disaster and aid the lopsided look to the device, and the less said about the protuding camera, the better. This phone looks like a 2013 phone. Yes it's passable now, but if you take this out on a 2 year contract this phone will look so old come 2017. And worst of all...it's almost a full centimetre thick. Compared to other 2015 flagships this is gonna look like the token fat friend. I've always rated simplicity and design of HTC sense and that's what kept me buying HTC phones, so sense 7 is going to have to be a wonder of nature to stop me from jumping ship this time round.
They've just lost a lot of returning customers. No one, and I mean no one, wanted that damn HTC logo black bar. Way to go HTC, I think I'll be going with that sexy S6 now.
I do t care what you all say, this is the phone I've wanted HTC to do all along
M8 owner here - devastated. Someone told me "But why improve on a good design?"
Apple does. And I hate to say it, but they sell a whole lot more phones than HTC.
How long did HTC talk about their phone for?
NOW how long did Sammy riff on theirs?
HTC, you had nothing. So awkward when only 3 people in the crowd clapped. For all the m9 buyers out there, enjoy your STILL inferior camera. Epic. Fail.
I was a Samsung Galaxy S person, until I saw the piece of crap they're coming out with now. No removable battery, no SD card (so you can pay more for more GB); Fingerprint magnet (glass in the back of the phone); same old 16 mp camera. I have the Galaxy S5 with a 2800 battery, the new S6 has a 2550 battery. At least if you compare the specs with HTC M8 and M9, M9 has a lot better specs. I am switching. I do like the speakers on the front, not on the back or bottom. and if not mistaken, S6 still running touchwiz.
It's not very nice looking is it? Looks a bit early 2000s brushed stainless steel business cool to me.
