Body Glove ShockSuit for M8

If you work hard or play hard, you need a case that allows your HTC One M8 take an extra bump or two. Whether you are working out in the field with mother nature, in the shop with the dust and equipment everywhere, in a squad vehicle looking out for the public or anywhere where your phone is going to take some extra abuse, the Body Gloce ShockSuit case is going to keep your M8 safer. The case isn't waterproof (though it is MIL-STD-810G rated), but when facing the mud, or sparks from a welder, or the door frame on your service vehicle the ShockSuit case will save your M8 from a world of hate.

Like most other rugged cases, the ShockSuit is a two-piece design. You put your M8 into the front polycarbonate outer shell — be sure to read the supplied instructions to make this easier — which also has a thick plastic screen protector that fared well against my keys. Once the front is on, you slip the assembly into the thick rubber outer housing. Then, your M8 is ready when things get a little tough. The trade off is that it's not the easiest case in the world to put on or take off — but you knew that going in when you bought a rugged case. The screen is still responsive even with the protective cover, but you will lose that incredible sensitivity that the M8 seems to posses in it's touch sensor. But it's not bad. Again, a tradeoff for ruggedness.

HTC One M8 FIXIT

The HTC One M8 is a great phone, but it's not perfect. And we, in our infinite wisdom, have some ideas.

There's no such thing as a perfect phone. You can justify this, defend that. Some flaws are subjective, others are like a bad scab in an unfortunate place, unable to be ignored. Fortunately, today's high-end phones are more good than bad. But, no, they're not perfect. And for as much as we love the HTC One M8 — and make no mistake, it's right up there with anything else we'll recommend this year — we've got some ideas about how HTC could "fix" its flagship device for 2014.

If you've yet to come across the phone — we're sure these people exist somewhere — here's the rub: The HTC One M8 continues the design trend we first saw 2013's HTC One M7. That is, aluminum unibody design with some sweeping curves. Large, 5-inch, 1080p display. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2GB of RAM and is running Android 4.4.2 with HTC's Sense 6 user interface atop it. It's got a relatively low resolution "Ultrapixel" camera — just 4 megapixels — but you get a bunch of cool features to play with after you've taken the shot.

And with that, here's how we'd "fix" the HTC One M8.

Update: Looks like the Google Play edition HTC One M8 won't be making its way outside of the U.S. just yet. In a statement issued to BGR India, HTC India says the Google Play edition M8 was "incorrectly" mentioned in its press release for today's Indian M8 launch. Instead it seems the Sense version of the phone will be the only one available in that country.

Galaxy S5, HTC One M8 and iPhone 5S

We put the latest and greatest camera phones head-to-head to see which one shoots the best

It's a great time of year to be interested in smartphone cameras, as all of the major manufacturers have put their latest and greatest photographic technology into the flagship devices. The iPhone 5S is well-known for its camera quality, but how do the just-released Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8 hold up? Well we know not everyone will get their hands on all three devices at once, so our very own Ally Kazmucha has gone above and beyond with an in-depth camera shootout over on iMore.

We have side-by-side-by-side comparison shots, in-depth analysis and information on what makes each camera stand out in different scenes. What one performs the best? You'll have to read through and see for yourself.

HTC has released the preview SDK for its Dual Lens API. The HTC One M8 Dual Lens system with a 4-megapixel "Ultrapixel" sensor, working in tandem with a smaller camera that senses depth to capture information about distance, allowing users to do things like defocus parts of an image. Developers will be able to use the APIs in the SDK to build new effects for the camera and use the dual-sensor set-up in their apps.

HTC One M8 Flip Case

Next up on our tour of HTC One M8 cases — we've already taken a look at the extremely popular Dot View case and HTC's TPU case — is HTC's Flip Case. This is a more traditional endeavor. No crazy 8-bit dots. No quick-peek windows.

And so what you get here is a pretty straightforward matter. Plastic shell on the back. Rigid cover for the front, with cutouts for the BoomSound speakers (which, by the way, work just fine with the flap closed, including during a phone call). Cutouts for the DuoCamera setup, flash and secondary microphone. Plenty of room to get to the microUSB port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and the power button and IR port up top.

Put simply, this is a no-frills, high-function (and not bad-looking) flip case.

HTC One M8 TPU case

Some regions of the world get al little extra from HTC along with their HTC One M8 — a TPU case. And here's a very quick look at it.

Nothing spectacular here. Just your basic TPU case that wraps around the back and sides of the phone. It keeps the display lifted off of flat surfaces, the better to protect it. Cutouts are there for the cameras and microphones, and there's a little flap to seal up the microUSB port and 3.5mm headphone jack. The HTC logo gets highlighted thanks to a little design work on the case as well.

This isn't the most flashy of HTC One M8 accessories — that prize still goes to the Dot View case. But if you're lucky enough to have gotten one of these guys in the box with your phone, it's worth taking a look at, if only for the additional grip it provides to an otherwise sleek (and slick) phone.

A quick snippet of information has been delivered by @evleaks this morning regarding a new color variant of the HTC One M8 and a possible destination. No images, just the message that a red version is headed the way of Verizon.

It's not the first time we've heard reports of a red – and indeed a blue – HTC One M8 being made available, and given HTC's previous efforts with the M7, it's entirely plausible. As for when, well, that we don't know. This talk of red make you think about holding out for it over one of the launch colors?

If you've got an HTC One M8 on Sprint, be on the lookout this morning for a system update. Sprint's rolling out software version 1.54.651.8. And while the changelog is for whatever reason vague — stability and call performance improvements, is all it says — you'll also see you now have the Extreme Power Saving mode.

This is an update we knew was coming, of course, as HTC previously told us it was waiting on U.S. carriers to approve the update that has already pushed out to non-U.S. versions of the M8.
