We put the latest and greatest camera phones head-to-head to see which one shoots the best

It's a great time of year to be interested in smartphone cameras, as all of the major manufacturers have put their latest and greatest photographic technology into the flagship devices. The iPhone 5S is well-known for its camera quality, but how do the just-released Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8 hold up? Well we know not everyone will get their hands on all three devices at once, so our very own Ally Kazmucha has gone above and beyond with an in-depth camera shootout over on iMore.

We have side-by-side-by-side comparison shots, in-depth analysis and information on what makes each camera stand out in different scenes. What one performs the best? You'll have to read through and see for yourself.

HTC One M8 Flip Case

Next up on our tour of HTC One M8 cases — we've already taken a look at the extremely popular Dot View case and HTC's TPU case — is HTC's Flip Case. This is a more traditional endeavor. No crazy 8-bit dots. No quick-peek windows.

And so what you get here is a pretty straightforward matter. Plastic shell on the back. Rigid cover for the front, with cutouts for the BoomSound speakers (which, by the way, work just fine with the flap closed, including during a phone call). Cutouts for the DuoCamera setup, flash and secondary microphone. Plenty of room to get to the microUSB port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and the power button and IR port up top.

Put simply, this is a no-frills, high-function (and not bad-looking) flip case.

HTC One M8 TPU case

Some regions of the world get al little extra from HTC along with their HTC One M8 — a TPU case. And here's a very quick look at it.

Nothing spectacular here. Just your basic TPU case that wraps around the back and sides of the phone. It keeps the display lifted off of flat surfaces, the better to protect it. Cutouts are there for the cameras and microphones, and there's a little flap to seal up the microUSB port and 3.5mm headphone jack. The HTC logo gets highlighted thanks to a little design work on the case as well.

This isn't the most flashy of HTC One M8 accessories — that prize still goes to the Dot View case. But if you're lucky enough to have gotten one of these guys in the box with your phone, it's worth taking a look at, if only for the additional grip it provides to an otherwise sleek (and slick) phone.

The HTC One M8 may have only been out for two weeks, but that doesn't mean there aren't updates to be had. Today HTC pushed out updates to both HTC BlinkFeed and HTC Gallery. In addition to the usual bug fixes and performance enhancements, BlinkFeed has been updated to let you "add more social content when you want" and the Foregrounder effect in Gallery now allows you to tap anywhere to apply the effect. If you've got an HTC One M8 on Sprint, be on the lookout this morning for a system update. Sprint's rolling out software version 1.54.651.8. And while the changelog is for whatever reason vague — stability and call performance improvements, is all it says — you'll also see you now have the Extreme Power Saving mode.

This is an update we knew was coming, of course, as HTC previously told us it was waiting on U.S. carriers to approve the update that has already pushed out to non-U.S. versions of the M8.

HTC One M8 Do Not Disturb

This may be the most important feature on any smartphone

Our phones make a lot of noise. They chirp. Beep. Vibrate. Sing. Howl. And if you're the popular type (or, worse, work with folks across many time zones), your phone can be worse than a newborn at 3 a.m. or a dog in a thunderstorm. Fortunately, smartphone manufacturers are finally baking in "Do Not Disturb" functions.

Here's how to use Do Not Disturb in Sense 6 on the HTC One M8.

HTC One M8 Google Play edition

Some of HTC's custom software survives in the latest member of the GPe ranks

Behold, the HTC One M8 Google Play edition. Same M8, less HTC. Look, there's not a lot here you haven't already read in our comprehensive HTC One review. Same 5-inch display. Same loud speakers. Same tall but sleek form factor. The difference here is software.

And as has been the case with other GPe devices, things get a little interesting here. While we tend to think of Google Play editions as "pure Google" devices, though that's not quite the case. There's still a little HTC code left over. That's a good thing, actually. The question is whether you want a phone stripped of some of the features that make it unique — and that explain some of the hardware peculiarities inherent to the M8.

Pique your interest yet? Let's break down this new HTC One M8 Google Play edition.
