Google Play Movies

63 countries now have Google Play Movies, with 25 now having Play Music as well

Well it turns out Google has been busy signing deals to expand Google Play Movies, as the content choice has just expanded to 38 new countries around the world today. And the new countries truly are around the entire world, with a huge crop of countries from Europe, Africa, South America and many other regions represented:

Aruba, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Finland, Gabon, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Ivory Coast, Luxembourg, Mali, Mauritius, Namibia, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Niger, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Rwanda, Senegal, Sweden, Togo, Uruguay, Venezuela and Zambia.

This is the first large expansion since December, and brings the total number of countries with access to the Google Play Movies store to a staggering 63 — let's see how long it takes for another huge expansion.

Looking at another area of the Play Store, Google Play Music — including the subscription All Access offering — has expanded to four new countries as well, all of which are in Europe: Greece, Norway, Slovakia and Sweden. This brings the total for the music service up to 25 countries now, and while it isn't 63 countries it's nothing to shake a stick at.

We're your next door neighbors Google. How the hell do we still not have Google Music while these third world countries do?

Talk to your government and the lobbyists from the media companies. Do you think Google doesn't want to sell media to Canada? That's just plain stupid. Or is it more likely that there are exclusivity deals with Apple, or lobbyists trying to keep Google out for other reasons?

l00natic71 says:

Google doesn't want to make money.... or it's the copyright owners not licensing media... tough call. It's unfortunate that media groups are still clinging to a losing cause. They can actually make more money by release content worldwide.

brendilon says:

Most likely situation is someone (probably Apple) has distribution deals set up with some level of exclusivity that prevent Google from bringing this media to Canada.

Bring that not only Apple sells music in Canada, but Microsoft has Xbox Music, Blackberry had it's own music store, every phone carrier had it's own ridiculously over priced and drmed music store, HMV and the CBC have music stores, that argument doesn't hold water. I have no idea what the hold up is with Google Play Music in Canada, but it is ridiculous and way past frustrating. I give up waiting and will just start buying from iTunes.

shn'g says:

yeah you really think that one of the biggest companies in the world couldn't get music into Canada if they wanted to your wrong. I think most are loosing interest in google music anyways here so its fine.

deltatux says:

That argument doesn't fly at all since Apple isn't the only company that sells music digitally. Microsoft does it with their XBOX Music service, there's also an independent company called 7digital that sells music online in Canada, HMV also sells digital music in Canada as well. The only two major players missing in Canada are Amazon and Google which makes absolutely no sense. It's as if they don't care about Canada at all. We also lack Chromecast up here as well.

brendilon says:

Right, does it make sense for Google to ignore the market? Of course not. Then perhaps the fault lies somewhere else. That's the whole freaking point.

Why the condescension (third world countries)? Android is pretty big in most these countries, and it benefits Google to be there, irrespective of Canada´s situation. I am certain Google is not spiting Canada, and their lack of presence is probably due to difficulty in getting into Canada.

"These third world countries"? I think you need to visit Europe and the world before you hand out insults left and right!

Tosse Kling says:

Before you throw out insults, talk to your government, because that's probably the only reason why Google don't release it in Canada. Calling Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway, third world countries? What a fuckin joke. Your neighbor, that is a third world country, go read up what the UN has set for a third world country. Some of the countries is third world, but you really need to read up a bit on your geographic skills. Most of the countries, is richer than your neighbor that's trying to pull the world down by its bad economics. Norway is a good example, they are richer than Canada, so what you are saying is that Canada is a third world country?

rlbrooks says:

Jealousy is a poor foundation for an argument. You need to define "richer". That is way too subjective.

brendilon says:

How is Canada trying to bring down the world with bad economics? You sound like a nutcase.

BjarteR says:

Third world country? What have you been smoking? Norway is the 4th richest country in the world, the US is the 6th by comparison.. :P Canada is on 9th place, so there. Maybe that's why? :D

rlbrooks says:

Again, this metric needs defined. Is this total monetary wealth per capita, or wealth in resources, etc? Monetary wealth is a poor basis for determining sustainable or influential wealth, wouldn't you say? With that being said, I agree Norway is not considered a "third world" country.

How did Austria not get Play Movies?!

Great news. Never thought we'd have Movies here. A bit strange to see that Denmark's neighbours Norway and Sweden get Music as well, while Denmark doesn't. Great for them :-)
