Ever wanted to know how to factory reset your T-Mobile G1? Don't worry Android Central has got you covered. Doing a factory reset is a fairly easy process on the G1 and is immensely useful for those returning units, selling units, and/or just want a fresh start.
Here's how it works:
- Power off the G1
- Hold Home Key + End key for 20 seconds or until you see a "triangle with an exclamation point and a picture of the G1"
- Open the QWERTY keyboard and hit Alt+W
- Restored!
To do a soft reboot, simply hit the Home+Back buttons when you reach the "triangle with an exclamation point and a picture of the G1" screen.

On your G1 I am Sure You see the market right? Well I downloaded this app called sim checker or sim locater something like that just browse for it. Anyways this helps for the theif part all you do is download this and if your phone is stolen then when the theif inserts another sim in the phone you will get a text and an email to whatever number or email address you choose. Then You can get online and track your phone its pretty cool. hope this helps.

Doesn't the fact that you can reset a locked G1 create a privacy issue? What if the phone is stolen? Then, the thief has access to private info on the phone, as well as, all the contact info. Why put a pattern lock on the phone if all a thief needs to do is look online to unlock a stolen phone? In addition to that info, the browser uses autofill to automatically give you the option to select something to insert in a text box. Example: What if a thief found out to unlock my phone on the internet, and is using my browser to shop, and it just so happens that the browser autofills the billing info with my credit card #, security code, etc? Again, does this not create a security or privacy issue?
Matt, you seem to be confused about what a Factory Reset is: When you reset a phone all the information stored inside is wiped out. All your private data is deleted. Your phone will be as it was when you bought it.
Almost every phone has the option to do a Factory Reset with some sort of combination of keys.

After updating, the device shows that it is on RC30. I am unsure if that is the latest firmware though. How would I check/update to the latest release? Its been 48 hours so far, and no automatic update has been initialized. I've turned on and off the device as well to see if it would trigger anything. Nada. The how to that you have on here to upgrade is to go to RC29. What about 31/32?

You can easily get back all your old applications by going to the "My downloads" section of the Market. Just in case anyone was fretting that they had lost all their applications, and didn't write them down. Data stored from applications is another issue, unless the data can be located on your sd card.
For those reading, be careful with your decision. Often times a soft reset will fix bugs and issues like that.

Thanks! I couldn't get Bluetooth to turn on no matter how many times I turned the G1 off and on again, so I figured I'd better try a soft reset, but I haven't had the G1 long enough to know how to do that, so I Googled "G1 reset" and yours was the first entry that appeared.

ok i have recently factory reset my phone, and i read up on it before i did so. so i knew to look in the "my downloads" to get my apps back, however some of my favorite apps will not re-download, they start to download and then it just says "download unsuccessfull", so i looked for the app on android market and its not there... i really want my app back can anyone help me with this and tell me how to get my app back

go to gmail.com and make an email. have to be near wifi for it to work if you don't have 3g.

Even though the phone is unlocked I caoont get back into the phone. You wont be able to get into the phone without a data connection... and wifi will not work unless you are already signed in. The phone needs to communicate with the google servers and without a EDGE or 3G connection that wont be poosible. If you like the G1, then you'll probably need to make a quick trip to the states to get it workin on the tmobile network

I'm in afganistan and use the phone down range to communcate with the wife who's in Italy. We both use "Vodafone" or "3" sim cards. We just recently switched to the T mobile. What can be done? Are the current sim cards compatible? Do they need to be updated or something? What's up with this phone? I'm in dire straights of not being able to talk to the wife. Please help if you can! I am really unhappy with my G1 phone, I have had it for less than a year and must have had at least six factory resets already. It then works fine for a while until some day it won't boot up after having run out of battery and having been recharged, and only a factory reset fixes it, till next time.

For people with username and password issue >>> Get SIM card from Tmobile (coz Tmobile G1 is set to tmobile internet connection) capable to access internet. Create gmail account (at deskop computer) when its all done and gmail account fully created then place the tmobile SIM card to phone turn it on, set ur username and password, after u get to the screen as its posted upper of this article (black G1) turn it off and place ur own SIM card.
