Another theory behind the Nexus One name

10

It's long been believed that Google's Nexus One was named after a class of robots in Phil K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (enough so that Dick's family has accused Google of trademark violations). But astute AC reader Roger has come up with an alternative theory:

I was listening to music on my DROID this morning and came across the song
"More Human than Human" by White Zombie. About 3:25 in the song he actually says "I am the nexus one." I get the definition of Nexus One and the idea
behind it, but then it hit me. Android? More Human than Human? Nexus One in
the lyrics. I see a relationship, you?

Indeed, we do, Roger. Indeed we do. (Though more likely Mr. Zombie cribbed from the same material.)

Motorola Backflip now available - in China

4

If you're just dying to get your hands on the Motorola Backflip (speaking of hands-ons, check out ours with the phone), tickets to China are running about $800 right now. 'Cause that's where you're going to have to go to pick up what's being billed as the ME600 on Motorola China's Web site. It's going for about $629 US and comes with a car charger and 8GB storage card.

As for a U.S. debut? We're still hearing march, so hold tight, everybody. [Moto China via Unwired View]

Hands-on with the myTouch 3G Fender

22

If Jimi Hendrix were alive today, this would be the phone he'd be carrying. The T-Mobile myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition is a refresh of the myTouch 3G that features a guitar-like finish, a serious case that mimics one you'd take to a gig, and it sees the (very welcome) addition of a 3.5mm headphone jack. A full review is forthcoming. In the meantime, peep our hands-on video after the break.

Nexus One with AT&T 3G bands may be coming

16

Those of you (erm, us) who sprung some cash early to be able to use the unlocked Nexus One on AT&T -- and to do so only on EDGE -- might soon regret that purchase. Engadget has spied another phone going through the FCC that's just one digit off the current Nexus One, which usually means a variation on a device. What's more is that it sports the 3G bands used by AT&T in the United States (and Telus, Rogers and Bell in Canada). As for whether it's coming to any of those carriers or will even be available unlocked remains to be seen. But we've got our fingers crossed. [FCC via Engadget]

Apparent myTouch Slide protoype leaks

6

For those of you chomping at the bit to get your hands on the T-Mobile myTouch Slide (aka the Espresso), here's something to at least whet your appetite. While the picture you see is pretty obvious prototype/dev phone, it should give you a decent idea as to what's coming down the pike.

The horizontal-slider keyboard is a bit reminiscent of the HTC Touch Pro 2 set in italics. We're willing to bet the buttons -- on the keyboard as well as the front of the device -- are tweaked a little bit in the end product. And you'll notice that's an optical trackpad instead of

As for specs, they're rumored to be a 320x480 touchscreen, 1300mAh battery, MicroSD card, camera with flash (size wasn't noted) and an ARM11 processor. One more pic after the break. [DroidDeveloper via TMoNews]

Review: Nexus One Desktop Dock

32

OK, we'll come right out and say it: Doing an unboxing video and review of a desktop dock is a bit much, even for us. But given that this is the first official accessory for Google's Nexus One (see our review), and that Google is doing all of the retail itself, we're going the extra mile on this one. It's for the kids, really.

So, after the break, a brief look at the desktop dock for the Google Nexus One.

T-Mobile down for Nexus One users?

23

Update: Google now says everything's back to normal. "The problem experienced by some users with T-Mobile data connections has been resolved. If you are still having trouble establishing a connection please power down your Nexus One, then turn it back on."

We're getting word from our forums that Nexus One users on T-Mobile are having data problems this morning. Here's the message many of you are seeing:

"To connect to the internet with the device you are using, you'll need a webConnect data plan. Please call Customer Care at 1-800-937-8997 to make sure you have the correct webConnect data plan "

That's no good, and T-Mo's support forums point to a national outage. And as you can imagine, support centers are getting hammered this morning (and likely will get hammered again when this is all over).

Do note that it looks like there are no issues if you're running it unlocked on AT&T (other than being stuck on EDGE, of course), so it's time to look T-Mo squarely in the eye. We'll keep you apprised. [T-Mobile]

HTC Releases Sense UI For The HTC Magic, Go Download Now

15

What are you still doing here? HTC has just released Sense UI for the HTC Magic! Which means you can go download the update and have the oh so beautiful Sense UI running on your Magic right now. We knew this day was coming but oh boy, it's still so exciting.

You can find all the download instructions HERE. We're not sure if the T-Mobile myTouch 3G will be able to download the Sense UI ROM (we don't think so) but for all other HTC Magic owners, you'll have to provide the serial number to your Magic to give it a go. It looks like it's Windows only, so Mac Users go borrow a friend's PC. But most importantly, don't forget to back up your device.

To quote HTC:

This ROM Upgrade for your HTC Magic will let you experience HTC Sense on your phone. HTC Sense lets you create a phone just right for you. You can customize your experience to be any way you like. Discover intuitive experiences that make everything you do on your phone effortless and delightful.

Let us know how Sense runs on the Magic! It's not quite 2.1 but you just woke up to a new phone that some think is even better. Now go get it already!

Picture Of Samsung Galaxy 2 Leaks, To Be Announced At MWC ?

8

Because we were all clamoring for a successor to the original Samsung Galaxy, it looks like Samsung has decided to come out with a Samsung Galaxy 2. Okay, to be fair the Galaxy was a pretty good Android device that unfortunately got swept under the rug because it never truly caught on in the States and was left behind when other Android devices started coming out of the woodworks.

The picture above is reportedly just a render of what the Galaxy 2 is expected to look like but if its spec list is to be believed, it'll be packing some monster specs (that are actually growing typical of Android devices): 1GHz Snapdragon Processor, 3.7-inch AMOLED Screen, 5 megapixel camera, Android 2.1, and 32GB of internal memory. Nice. We're hoping Samsung leaves the Galaxy 2's 2.1 UI alone because Touchwiz isn't really our thing.

We're supposed to learn more about the Samsung Galaxy 2 at MWC so keep your eyes open!
