Motorola Droid update gets some details

51

The above just popped onto Verizon's Web site and, well, you can plainly see it's pointing to the impending Android 2.1 update. We'll let you read through the thing yourself, but there's live wallpapers, pinch-to-zoom, voice-to-text everywhere ... basically all the good stuff that you've been waiting on for so long.

Anybody actually seeing the update yet? And in the meantime, join the conversation in our Droid update forum. [pdf link] Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

HTC Tattoo not getting Eclair after all

8

It appears the rumors that the HTC Tattoo will receive an official update to Eclair weren't true.  James over at Tracy and Matt has received an official response from HTC that pretty much shoots down the rumor with just one line:

"Currently there are no plans to update the HTC Tattoo with éclair."

HTC has been known to change its mind, and Tattoo owners can only hope that it happens again.  The Tattoo for sure isn't a powerhouse, but it's a nice little phone that fills a niche in Android's lineup.  Since the Tattoo was released just last November, it's pretty disheartening to find out that it's already reached the end of it's software update path.   Any readers using one of these small sexy phones?  Sound off in the comments! ZumoDrive now available on Android

9

Android 1.6+ ZumoDrive, a cloud media storage/streaming/sync solution, is now available for Android. Here's the skinny: Install an app on your computer, and media (music, photos and the like) become accessible through the ZumoDrive app on your phone. You get 1 gigabyte of storage for starters (take a tour and get it upped to 2GB), and tiered pricing is available, from 10GB for $2.99 a month to a whopping 500GB for $79.99 a month. AT&T, Rogers get their own 3G-compatible Nexus One (finally!)

3

It was a bit of a disappointment when we learned that despite being an unlocked GSM device, the Nexus One would only get 3G on T-Mobile in the United States. That has ended, as Google is now selling a Nexus One with the AT&T and Rogers (Canada) 3G bands of 850 and 1900MHz. This isn't a great surprise, as we'd seen it go through the FCC already and even got a tip just the other day.

It's the same unlocked phone, and the same price of $529. So, who's regretting that earlier purchase now? [Google]

(p.s.: And you Verizon types? Sorry, keep waiting. )

(p.p.s.: Our pal Michael points out that Bell and Telus users are good to go here, too.)

We get it -- the Nexus One didn't sell as many as the Droid or iPhone ...

37

Here's another one of those charts that shows (and when we say "shows," we mean estimates) just how few units of the Nexus One Google has sold in comparison to the Motorola Droid and Apple's iPhone over the first 74 days that each was available.

And here's the sentence in which we again say comparing these things is ridiculous. Two of these phones are sold in stores. One of them is not. Two of these phones have received gianormous marketing campaigns, in print, online and on television. (And I'm pretty sure I saw somebody going door-to-door the other day.) One of these phones has received a push mainly through Google AdSense. That's no small potatoes, but it's hardly the same thing.

And so to the next company that plans on making this comparison, I beg you: Don't. [Flurry via Business Insider]

Motorola Milestone receiving Android 2.1 In Bulgaria this week?

10

Last week we reported the Milestone is/isn't getting Android 2.1. Now Engadget is reporting that the Milestone is getting Android 2.1 as soon as this week by March 20 -- as in Saturday -- leading the way for the rest of Europe to follow.

Meanwhile, all Droid users have been waiting for their long overdue 2.1 update. Hopefully with all of this in the air, this is a sign of things to come.  [Engadget]

Cliq XT launching March 17th for $99

5

It looks like T-Mobile has settled on a date to launch the Motorola Cliq XT: March 17th. Which is this week! If you can pause your St. Patrick Day's celebration for a bit on the 17th, you should be able to mosey your way down to any T-Mobile retail store to find the Motoblur running, Android powered full touchscreen device that is the Cliq XT. It'll only retail for $99 with new 2-year contract (or $199 with 1-year contract) which is a grand deal for a brand new smartphone. Anyone getting one?

HTC shipping Nexus One to Verizon? Huh?

46

We've said it before. We've seen it already. But we'll say it once again: it's highly unlikely that Verizon is going to sell the Nexus One in stores. So though DigiTimes is saying that HTC is shipping Nexus Ones to Verizon, we're just not buying it. Why would Verizon be stocking inventory of a phone they'll never sell in their own retail stores? Like the T-Mobile Nexus One, the Verizon Nexus One is going to be sold exclusively through google.com/phone. And whether it's beneficial or not for Google to be committed to that strategy, that's on them.
