Samsung Moment gets its own Froyo port

10

There was another Samsung slider on Sprint, long before anyone ever heard of the Epic 4G -- the Samsung Moment.  It had pretty good hardware for it's day, with an AMOLED screen and an 800 MHz CPU, but the software left a little to be desired.  Officially, it was updated to Android 2.1 and Sprint and Samsung were done with it.

But not everyone gave up on the Moment, and despite some pretty serious software bugs, it still has a thriving development community.  And now they have succeeded in putting Froyo on it, basically from scratch.  Using the Acclaim R880 and Intercept kernel sources and software, the only serious bug left to overcome seems to be the GPS.  At this point, an unreliable GPS has got to be better than toggling airplane mode 10 times a day, so if you're still rocking the Moment, you owe it to yourself to at least have a look at the source link.

This is a testament to the flexibility of Android, and the dedication of a handful of people.  My hats off to each and every person involved  Without you guys the Moment would have been doomed with a buggy, but official, Android 2.1 install forever.  [SDX Developers] Thanks Hugabu for the heads up!

Twidroyd now back online!

9

Although it took a little why to go through the Twitter approval process, we're glad to let all you Twidroyd users out there know that services have now been restored. The recent suspension put in place by Twitter has been removed, and it is suggested that you grab the latest Twidroyd update if you're still seeing any issues.

As for why the popular app was suspended? UberMedia founder Bill Gross explained on Quora:

1. Twitter said that in UberTwitter and Twidroyd we use a tweet-elongation service named tmi.me that allows people to write more than 140 characters, and that this service may post private messages on a public website. At their request, we have removed this ability.

2. Twitter said that in UberCurrent we change links that are part of an affiliate program to be our own links. We don’t currently do this, but we removed all changing of links to eliminate any possibility of this.

3. Twitter said that they would like us to change the name UberTwitter, and we have changed the name to UberSocial, effective immediately.

Now, go forth and Tweet on! Download link can be found after break for you all. [Twitter, Quora]

Android Central ROM review: ApeX 1.4

29

For many of us, half the fun of having an Android phone is running a customized version of the OS on our phones.  OK, more than half.  Custom ROMs can offer a very different experience from what the manufacturer intended, and often times it's like having a new phone to play with.  This week, Android Central forums moderator terpitude71 is going to have a look at the ApeX 1.4 ROM as running on his Droid X.  Kick back, and head past the break to have a read. Thanks Brad!

Best Buy Motorola XOOM pre-order page back -- again

71

For those of you who have been following along with all the Best Buy, Motorola XOOM chaos you might like to know that Best Buy now seems to have all their affairs in order for pre-ordering the Motorola XOOM. Despite Best Buy pulling the trigger not once but rather twice on their XOOM pre-order pages another one has now popped up on their site and looks like it might actually remain there rather then being removed.

Don't get too excited though, you can't actually pre-order using the page (yet?) it just tells you to visit your local Best Buy instead. Oh right, it's not $1200 either; they opted to not add any price this time.  [Best Buy] Thanks, JC!

Update - Prices and accessories now added to the page. Listed price is $799.

AT&T confirms the Inspire 4G does not feature HSUPA

68

We've been hearing from many of you who bought a shiny new Inspire 4G that there appears to be an issue with the device upload speeds.  While AT&T is busy working out the kinks in their HSPA+ network, getting backhaul in place and pouring the magic 4G dust into the wires, most of us with an Inspire 4G are still using the 3G HSPA network.  HSPA is broken down into two parts -- HSDPA (download) and HSUPA (upload).

The Inspire 4G is not HSUPA capable, according to AT&T.  No conspiracy.  No rumor.  Just the answer, straight from the source.

This explains why most of us are seeing fast 3G download speeds, but no-so-much on the upload side.  I had a bit of a play with this myself last night, and see the same thing -- download speeds around 2 Mbps, and upload speeds around 200 kbps.  You can see above what our (and TiPb's) own Jeremy Sikora is seeing for speeds in Chicago.  He also notes that upload speeds on his iPhone 4 (which is HSUPA capable) are about twice what he sees with his Inspire.

While it's not the news most of us want to hear, it does clear up the confusion.  Thanks to the folks at AT&T who took time to answer our questions.

Motorola Atrix 4G system dump available

9

Another new device in the hands of other users means it going to get put through the inevitable system dump. That is exactly what has happened to the Motorola Atrix 4G and it has some goodies for everyone out there. Wallpapers, ringtones and even the boot animation are all available for download now.

Plus, if you like to tinker around with the internals you can get at the complete system dump as well. If you're not much for that, stick to the basics but if you're a developer or ROM cooker then by all means have at it. [Android Central Forums]

Motorola Xoom displays arriving in stores

47

You can just about taste the Motorola Xoom. As you can see above, display materials are starting to make their way into stores, and official ability is believed to be right around the corner, possibly in the next few days.

Pricing still isn't official, however, and we're still waiting on Google to release the Honeycomb code to manufacturers, so there are a couple of pretty big steps still to be taken before we get this 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet in our fat little fingers.

But we're getting closer, folks. One more pic after the break. Thanks, S!
