HTC Hero Gets Unboxed -- VIDEO

4

It's really only a matter of time after a big smartphone announcement that the unboxing photos and videos start trickling in. In this case, CoolSmartPhone got their hands on the HTC Hero and blessed the rest of us with high quality pictures of every angle and a beautiful video to boot.

To us, the HTC Hero looks like a slimmed down, sharper-lined T-Mobile G1. The chin is all there of course and though it looks jutting in some angles, we're optimistic for its real-world use. The video showcases the HTC Sense UI, which we're just bananas for, and everything seems to run pretty smooth. We absolutely can't wait to get our own hands on one of these but in the meantime feel free to hit the jump to check out the video!

Pre-Order T-Mobile myTouch 3G and Receive it August 3rd

5

The T-Mobile myTouch 3G news has been rolling in and the plans are being set. To recap: T-Mobile is holding an event on July 8th to showcase the myTouch 3G, pre-orders will be available July 8th to July 25th, and an expected official release date for the myTouch 3G is set for August 5th.

However, if you want to get your hands on the myTouch 3G before the rest of the US (but behind the rest of the world, it seems) you can pre-order the myTouch 3G and receive it by August 3rd (via tmonews). Sure, it's only a few days before the expected launch date but hey, to be the coolest kid on the block for 48 hours might be worth the pre-order!

T-Mobile myTouch 3G Event on July 8th

15

T-Mobile just announced a myTouch 3G media event scheduled for July 8th in New York City. The date is notable because that's when T-Mobile will start taking pre-orders for the myTouch 3G. So when July 8th rolls around, don't be surprised when a ton of hands-on pictures pop up!

We don't know if it's just us but this whole T-Mobile myTouch 3G launch feels a little off. We've known about the HTC Magic for so long and have expected it to release in the US so much earlier that the myTouch 3G feels delayed without ever really been 'delayed'. Combine the fact that the HTC Hero completely stole the show for all future Android phones, we're not sure if we're even excited for the myTouch 3G anymore. But that could just be us, what do you guys think?

Who's getting a myTouch 3G and who's waiting for an HTC Hero?

HTC Sense UI Shown on HTC Dream

5

Yep, you read that right. Fresh off the reports that the HTC Sense UI will not be available to Android phones with Google branding, the great Android user base has managed a way to flash the SuperHERO rom g3 onto their HTC Dream aka T-Mobile G1. Which means, yep, you'll get HTC Sense on your G1. What makes having HTC Sense running on your G1/Dream even cooler is that you'll be able to take advantage of multi-touch (!), a feature that's conspicuously missing in the G1.

Obviously, HTC Sense is not quite optimized to run on the HTC Dream so you can expect bugs like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi not working properly, slight hiccups in the OS, and other problems. But if you really want to give HTC Sense a whirl, you should follow the directions over at HD Blog.

If you don't think you want HTC Sense, feel free to watch the video above. Just watch the drooling.

thanks for the tip Eleonora!

HTC Hero Pops Up on Orange UK Website

2

The HTC Hero, of recent fame and notoriety, has shown its unique face (strong chin and all) on the Orange UK Website, it's first official appearance on a UK carrier's site. The HTC Hero is listed as 'coming soon' so there is no 'official' pricing option on the website but earlier reports had the Hero fully subsidized with qualifying plans.

Engadget reports that pricing details will be finalized today and that we should hear official word soon. We'd expect T-Mobile to put up their version of the HTC Hero, the G1 Touch, on their website soon. We can't help but feel jealous about all the Android offerings across the pond.

SciPhone Dream G2 Has A Cute Android Robot Charger

6

The SciPhone Dream G2 is all kinds of wrong: it's a cheap knockoff phone trying to capitalize on Android's popularity by naming itself both the Dream and G2, the box font is a blatant rip job of the G1 logo, and worst of all, though the OS looks like Android, it's not--it's actually some proprietary OS rigged to look like Android. So the Sciphone G2 pretty much fails at being an even half-way decent Android device.

But we can commend them for one thing: that cute green Android robot charger. It's adorable, hilarious, and just plain fun. We'd definitely buy the Android Robot charger if it came without the phone!

More pictures after the break!

We can tell you that once you go 3G, you'll never look back. Hopefully, T-Mobile continues rolling out and expanding their burgeoning 3G network because the G1 and myTouch 3G are both more enjoyable with a fast data connection.

Dell Still Working on Android Powered Internet Device

3

Those Dell Android Device rumors just don't die, do they? The WSJ reports that Dell has been developing a "pocket-sized device for tapping into the Internet" and that said gadget will run Android. People familiar with Dell's plans say that it's like a slightly bigger version of an iPod Touch and could be released by year's end.

To tell you the truth, this rumor is only mildly exciting for us. We're not sure if we would be satisfied with just a Dell Android MID-type device, our insatiable needs definitely prefer the rumored Android Dellphones. But hey, that's just us.

Would anyone be interested in a Dell-built, Android-powered MID-type device?

HTC Sense UI Not Coming to Google-Branded Phones, Sorry G1 & myTouch 3G

To clarify on our previous report that the amazing HTC Sense UI was going to be "available to on some other existing devices", those 'other existing devices' won't include the T-Mobile G1 or myTouch 3G. Sadly, HTC Sense will not be available for Google-branded phones and both the G1 and myTouch 3G are Google experience phones. The reasoning is due to licensing restrictions which just sucks for all parties.

So if you see that "with Google" branding on the back of your Android phone, sorry, you won't be able to enjoy the future that is HTC Sense. Rogers' Dream and Magic here we come!

Pictures of Merlot myTouch 3G Pop Up

4

Because the tech world is filled with so many black and white gadgets, we've been getting a lot of interest regarding the 'Merlot' color of the myTouch 3G and how it'll end up looking. Luckily for us, some in the wild shots of the Merlot myTouch 3G have popped up and it looks like a winner.

The lighting and angles of the pictures aren't the best but the 'Merlot' definitely adds character and is undoubtedly unique. We expect T-Mobile to be moving a good amount of these 'Merlot' versions of the myTouch 3G!

Sprint Testing HTC Hero and Developing Samsung Android WiMax Phone?

8

There are some rumors floating around that Sprint is currently internally testing the HTC Hero. Sprint has so far avoided Android, even going as far as saying Android simply wasn't good enough yet, is the HTC Hero the first Android device that's 'good enough' in Sprint's eyes? It seems so.

The even juicier rumor is that Sprint is also testing a Samsung Android CDMA/WiMax device. Details are scarce but by just mentioning Android and 4G/WiMax in the same sentence sends me to a tizzy.

Obviously this needs to be filed in rumor and speculations but we've always championed Sprint and Android together. The logic of a Sprint Android Phone makes too much sense to pass up and we're hoping all these internal testings of Android Devices from Sprint mean that they mean business.

Who's interested in a Sprint Android Phone anyway? We always hear about Android with Verizon and AT&T yet Sprint remains a mystery. Mysterious or not, we're still thinking this can be good.

Is The myTouch 3G Launching on August 5th?

5

It's been an odd journey for the HTC Magic to come to the US, we've had a name change (from the HTC Magic), previously unknown announcements, and vague launch dates. Well, according to some incredible research, it looks like the vague "Early August' target date has been specified to be August 5th.

It's not confirmed yet so don't go planning August 5th as your 'go to the local t-mobile store day' but it does fall in line with previous reports. The date was determined by taking a look at the source of the dev server of the official myTouch 3G website. We were hoping for an August 1st launch day but we think a couple days later would still be completely satisfactory.

Now let's hope for no delays!

Pre-Order Unlocked HTC Hero at Amazon UK for $710

2

Amazon UK currently has the HTC Hero available for pre-order. It comes unlocked for the low, low price *sarcasm*  of £429.99 which is roughly equivalent to $710. It's hardly a deal but if you want to purchase it unlocked without a contract, this might be a half-way decent option. Amazon UK has the target release date at July 15th, 2009 which is actually not too far away. Obviously, the date isn't set in stone but it does give you something to think about...

Anyone jumping the gun and pre-ordering the HTC Hero?
