Samsung Hercules and HTC Ruby possible release dates revealed in T-Mobile back-to-school flyer

22

Two really interesting new phones are soon to be released on T-Mobile, the Samsung Hercules and the HTC Ruby.  We now know at least a tentative date for their arrival, October 26.  Both of which are "4G capable and share many similar top of the line features and also [are] the fastest smartphones in the market" according to T-mobile.  I'm not sure we can argue too much when we have a look at the rumored specs of them: a 4.3 inch qHD display, 1GB RAM and a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU for the Ruby, and 4.5 inch Super AMOLED Plus, 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, and 16GB of internal memory for the Hercules.  Either looks like a real winner, and should make any Android fan pretty happy.

Of course, these dates are likely as not to change, but at least we know the ballpark.

AT&T LG Thrill 4G delayed again, Sept. 4 new date from leaked docs

12

The LG Thrill 4G, AT&T's next (hopefully) Android smartphone has once again been delayed, this time the date is pushed back until September 4.  As mentioned in the document you see above, the Thrill was to ship to third party stores (in this case, Radio Shack) on August 21, but that's not going to be happening.

We have no idea why the phone keeps being delayed, but it's something we're used to by now.  There's also the small matter that AT&T never announced a release date, only "this Summer".  It will be released when it's ready.  Hopefully the extra time means a better product out the door.

Thanks, Anon!

Flud news reader now available for Android; we go hands-on!

14

If there's ever an app I'm always willing to try out, it's a new newsreader. And today we bring you Flud News (or FLUD News) for Android. It's a graphically intensive newsreader, with story thumbnails getting prominent play. Flud comes preloaded with a few feeds -- there's The Flud, which features stories aggregated from various sources as voted on by Flud's users, plus a few other design and tech-related sites. Or, you can include your Twitter timeline, add your own feeds, or connect to Google Reader and pick and choose from feeds you already follow.

Graphically, Flud is beautiful. The ability to easily bookmark and share stories makes it that much better. Other features include:

  • Search for sites, blogs or other RSS feeds
  • Customized categories and sortable feeds
  • Sync with Google Reader
  • Option for web view
  • Full-screen mode
  • Tweet and retweet from your social stream
  • Share to Twitter, Facebook, Email

Limited Edition Minecraft Xperia Play for sale on eBay

8

Looking for a collectors item to show off both your love for Minecraft and Android? Well, Mojang has just the thing to fill that void posted up on eBay for you. That is, if you have at minimum US $1,250. That's what the current bid is for the Limited Edition Xperia Play they are offering. That may seem like quite a bit but it's for a good cause -- the funds raised will go to a charity of Notch’s and the whole Minecraft team’s choice! Right now, it has 6 days left on the bidding. Anyone got some spare cash laying around?

HTC Bliss spied in the wild

8

The HTC Bliss has been spotted out and about, meaning the phone is officially in the hands of testers.  We saw it breeze through the FCC a few days ago, and a leaked Verizon roadmap shows it to be ready somewhere around the end of September.  In case you haven't been paying attention, the Bliss is HTC's Android phone they seem to marketing towards the fairer sex, with unique accessories like blinking charms and pleasant pastel colors.  No idea how that strategy will pay off, but they need something to make its mid-range specs (3.2 qVGA screen and 800MHz CPU) a bit more enticing and maybe that will be just the ticket.  We should be finding out this holiday season.

Astraware releases Word Games exclusively for the B&N nook Color

3

Astraware has released their new Word Games application, and are offering it exclusively on the Barnes & Noble store.  It's a suite of five word games, that share a 100,000 word dictionary.  The games calculate scores based not only on the letters used and the length of the words, but also how "interesting" or uncommon they are.  The games are:

  •  Shuffle - Make as many words as you can with the letters provided including the 5, 6 or 7 letter target word to unlock the next level. The more small words you get, the bigger your score. Use the Shuffle button to mix the letters up and help yourself spot more words!
  • Hexxed - Make words by tracing your finger through the tiles to make a chain within the hexagonal grid! Two play modes - limited tiles or limited time. Create long, interesting or unusual words to keep your word power score up and earn more tiles or time!
  • Wordsearch - Find all the listed words within the grid of letters, horizontally vertically, or diagonally! Play using the standard dictionary, or choose from over 20 special lists of themed words!
  • Gridlock - Make words by tracing your fingers through the letters to make a chain. As you make words this lights up the tiles. Light up the whole grid to level up! Use special tiles to boost your word power, score bonus points and more.
  • Spellmaster - Challenge your spelling skills against words of increasing difficulty. Choose the correct spelling from a choice of 4 words, 3 of which are misspelled!

Games of this nature should appeal to Nook Color buyers, and having it included in the on-device app store makes it easy for Nook Color users to download and enjoy them.  Word Games costs $4.99, and of course is available from the Nook Apps Store.  The full press release is after the break.
