Galaxy Tab root (and others) just a few clicks away with z4root root

54

So you have your new shiny Galaxy Tab, and you want to root it.  I like the way you think.  The good news is that the days of SDK's, cryptic shell commands, and crazy Windows USB drivers are over.  An app from the Market (z4root -- links after the break) will root your Tab, as well as other Galaxy S phones and other NAND unlocked devices with just a button press.

  • Download and install Z4Root from the Market
  • Enable USB debugging (menu>settings>applications>development)
  • Run the app, and press the "root" button

Your Tab will restart, and you're rooted.  Unrooting is just as easy, just run z4root and "unroot."  Of course a lot of the goodies available for other devices just haven't been made for the Tab just yet, but they're coming.  Hit the jump for download links and a list of other phones this will work on.  [XDA Developers via Pocketables]

How to manually apply the Droid Incredible maintenance update

22

For those of you who just can't wait to get that maintenance update for the HTC Droid Incredible, we've got the download location and instructions. It's all on the up and up, it's just that you're manually applying the update instead of waiting on it. It's the exact same update. Here you go:

  1. Grab the OTA file here from the Android Central Forums.
  2. Make sure it's named update.zip
  3. Copy it to the root (base directory) of your SD card.  Don't put it in any folders, and don't put it on the internal memory.
  4. Shut your phone off
  5. While holding the volume down button, turn the phone back on.
  6. In the white Bootloader screen, select recovery from the list.
  7. In the recovery screen (the triangle with exclamation mark), press volume up and power.  You'll go to the recovery menu.
  8. In the recovery menu, select "apply sdcard:update.zip"
  9. The phone will find the file, and when finished prompt you to reboot.  Reboot via the menu, then patiently wait for the phone to reboot, and enjoy.

A reminder that if you're rooted, this'll break it. Need more help? Find it in our Droid Incredible Forums.

Changes coming to Android Market

11

Tim Bray, who we all know and love from the Android Developers Blog, made a couple interesting announcements this week about the Android Market.  He wanted to remind developers about the Market features enacted this past June that help determine what devices their applications will be available for, as it seems that preparation for some new market features requires all legacy applications to get rescanned and checked against the new methods.

Of course, the words "new market features" caught our attention.  We can't help but think back to I/O 2010, when we saw some great new Market features like Music streaming, that Google said would come soon, likely with Gingerbread.  Is it soon yet? [Android Developers Blog]

Is this the Rogers no contract pricing for Samsung Galaxy Tab?

10

While the Samsung Galaxy Tab is making its way across U.S. carriers right now, we're still waiting for Rogers in Canada to even really price the thing let alone, get it up on the website and in stores to sell. Many rumors have circulated surrounding the pricing but this has got to be the most extreme one I have read thus far. If the above image is in any way accurate then the no contract pricing for the Samsung Galaxy Tab will be set at $750 for Rogers and well, they've forced me to lose all concern I had in purchasing one. Black Friday deals from Best Buy all about Android

18

With Black Friday well on its way, a lot of retailers are gearing up to drop prices. Best Buy is no different and this year they've decided to layout Android devices, some for only $1. Keep in mind though, new contracts will still apply to the purchases. Devices available? Check the list by carriers:

Sprint:

  • Samsung Transform - $69.99 with 2 year contract
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab - $549.99
  • LG Optimus S (Charcoal and Purple) - $1 with 2 year contract

Verizon:

  • HTC Droid Incredible - $1 with 2 year contract
  • Samsung Fascinate - $1 with 2 year contract
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab -$549.99

Great time to pick up a new Android device if you've been waiting. Surely more ads will leak out as well, so that you may plot your plan of attack. Check for additional images after the break.  Thanks nate1dawgg and jblank0! [BFAds]
