Getting fancy with the Galaxy Note 4 and Mont Blanc

60

The Mont Blanc accessories for the Note 4 are pricey, but pretty fancy, too

IFA 2014 As part of the raft of Unpacked announcements this week in Berlin from Samsung was news of a partnership with Mont Blanc for the Galaxy Note 4. If you're familiar with Mont Blanc then you're also going to be familiar with the price you pay for their pens, and that part has certainly followed the brand to the Note 4. Quality, yes, but with the price to match.

Eyes-on with the Acer CXI Chromebox

21

Prior to IFA 2014 actually kicking off, Acer announced the CXI, its latest Chrome OS device. In a break from the norm it's a Chromebox this time out instead of a laptop, and it's well priced and has a nifty little form factor that allows it to stand up vertically on a desk or be mounted to the rear of a monitor. While roaming the show floor we managed to grab a few minutes with the CXI.

First look at the Huawei Ascend G7

3
Ascend G7

Huawei brought a second metal phone to Berlin, and it's pretty nice, too

IFA 2014 Huawei had two brand new devices to announce during its IFA 2014, and both of them were metal. While we've already looked at the Ascend Mate 7, next up it's the turn of the Ascend G7 to step in front of the camera. Multitasking on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Galaxy Note 4 multitasking

Samsung overhauls its multitasking features in new Note 4

IFA 2014 As we said in our hands-on feature with the device, Samsung isn't reinventing the wheel (or the S Pen) with the newly announced Galaxy Note 4 — instead it's refining the great many features that are already there. One area that's received special attention this time around is multitasking — before split into three different (and largely disconnected) methods, Samsung's multitasking setup now lets you jump freely between minimized, maximized and windowed modes, with hooks into the redesigned recents menu to boot.

Read on to find out how you'll juggle your apps on the Galaxy Note 4.

Moto 360 and the ambient screen setting

98
Moto 360 ambient screen

The ambient light sensor and ambient screen setting are two different things, and one warns about battery life

Much has been said about the ambient light sensor on the Moto 360 leading up to its release. For one, it's part of the reason for the black bar at the bottom of the Moto 360's display. (Whether that bothers you is another discussion for another time.) And an ambient light sensor is one of those things many of thought was missing from the first few Android Wear releases.

After all, our phones can adjust their own brightness depending on the lighting conditions. Why not these watches? After all, it's all about saving on battery life, right? And displays are one of the biggest power draws on any mobile device.

Additionally (and slightly confusing) is this "Ambient Screen" setting on the Moto 360. Here's the thing, though: The ambient screen setting is turned off by default on the Moto 360, and there's a good reason for that.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 comes in pink

45

The recently-announced Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is following Samsung's tradition of a device that comes in many colors. In addition to the standards of black and white, the Galaxy Note 4 also will be available in gold (as we saw in our hands-on) and pink. It might not be for you, but it's clearly for somebody — Samsung wouldn't be releasing it if they didn't think there was a market for it. Pink has proven to be a popular color over the past several years for Samsung, so it's no surprise to see that the new Galaxy Note will come in light red as well.

Xperia Z3 versus Xperia Z2

Sony's early-2014 flagship compared to its late-breaking successor

IFA 2014 Sony's six-monthly refresh cycle for smartphones shows no sign of stopping, with the recent announcement of the Xperia Z3 at IFA 2014. It's a minor upgrade of the Xperia Z2 in terms of pure specs, but the Z3 also represents a further evolution of the company's "OmniBalance" design language, while tweaking its 20.7-megapixel camera and introducing some subtle software changes.

6

We've already seen, used and reviewed the Huawei Ascend P7 but that hasn't stopped another one from coming to market. This time with sapphire glass.
