Smart Notice on the LG G3 - what is it and should you use it?

LG is trying to help you through your days with Smart Notice, but is it worth your time?

What's the best way to describe the LG G3's Smart Notice widget? Think Google Now, but much scaled down, and you're on the right sort of track. It's main purpose in life is to deliver you information before you need it.

But does it live up to that, and is it worth keeping LGs widget permanently on your homescreen?

Weekly Photo Contest: Utility

We like to mix things up a bit with photo contest prompts, and this one is a little bit out there but should yield some awesome results. This week we're looking for pictures that represent the word "utility" in some way. Show off pictures of tools, utensils, anything that helps you get things done. It could be a tractor, a bike rack or textbook — just make sure its a picture of something that has some utility to it.

We'll be picking out the two best photos this week and offering up a prize to each one — this week's prize is a TYLT VU QI Wireless Charging Pad.

Entering is easy. Just drop your entry in a forums post at the link below. Tell us what Android you used to get the picture, and any back story you want to add to it. We'll pick a winner Tuesday (August 5) night at 11:59 PM ET, and announce them on the blog with next Wednesday's contest.

Motorola Roadster Pro Bluetooth Speakerphone review

Motorola Roadster Pro

A premium product with a premium price

If your car doesn't have built-in Bluetooth of some sort, and you don't want a Bluetooth dongle hanging off of your ear, the Motorola Roadster Pro Bluetooth Speakerphone may be just what you're looking for.

In most places it's illegal to use your phone while you're driving, and chances are (Boomsound notwithstanding) the tiny speaker on your phone isn't going to cut it. You need something that's loud, but also easy to use. A few extra features never hurt, either.

The Amazon Fire Phone review

Amazon Fire Phone

The best phone you probably won't want to buy

Of course we got interested when Amazon finally showed off the Fire Phone. Rumors had been flying for quite a while, but once we actually saw what Amazon had to offer, we had to take a look at it. It's Android at it's core — though not in a way we're used to seeing — and that's what we do here.

So is the Fire Phone more than Amazon Prime in your hands? With features like Dynamic Perspective and an a very custom user interface — and a complete lack of all Google services — the Fire Phone has it's work cut out.

Let's see what makes this thing tick.

Shamu and the Minis — a musing on device sizes

Smartphones come in all shapes and sizes...

We keep having this same conversation — but "smaller" phones have got to stop skimping on specs

Size matters. That's all there is to it.

We've seen quite a bit of talk about phones and the sizes they come in, particularly as those sizes have increased over the years. We all have our opinions on how our phones seem to be blurring (or outright obliterating) the line between phones and tablets. And more recently there's been quite a bit of discussion on phone sizes with reports of a Motorola Nexus device, code-named Shamu, and if a Nexus phablet is a good idea.
