Samsung releases official video for Wifi Galaxy Tab 10.1, Touchwiz included

12

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Samsung released their official promotional video for the Galaxy 10.1 today with several Touchwiz elements in tow, notably several widgets and icon skins.  But this is what we expected would happen.

Remember, even though the Tab shipping now is stock honeycomb, Samsung plans on shipping future devices with their Touchwiz UI, as well as offering it to existing customers via an optional over the air download at a future date. Since this is a promotional video for the "final" product, featuring Touchwiz made the most sense because it meant they only had to make one film instead of two.  In fact, the description from the video's YouTube page says as much:

The official info clip for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi. The tab used in this video is 3G version and may differ from the Galaxy Tab 10.1 sold in the U.S., and some of the features and services highlighted in the video will be available through software upgrade in the U.S.

We've received no word from Samsung that Touchwiz was being pushed out to tablets yet, and devices purchased in NYC last week are still running the stock honeycomb they were shipped with.

Be sure to keep an eye on our forums as Android Central readers nationwide pick up their pre-orders and start posting feedback.  In the meantime, crank your speakers to 11 and enjoy the video.

Here is the full changelog:

  • Mine and Dine: a new cave themed episode begins with 15 new levels!
  • Find all the collectible jewels
  • Use hanging stalactites to pop those pesky burrowing piggies!
  • Any particular levels stonewalling your progress? We tweaked a couple of them to spare you a few gray hairs!

Semi-official Gingerbread 2.3.3 for Samsung Captivate leaks out

10

For Samsung Captivate owners it was a struggle just to even get Froyo, let alone Gingerbread but thanks to some leaks -- there is now a pair of official-looking Gingerbread 2.3.3 leaks available. Both have different build dates with the later build addressing minor fixes over the older build.

  • I897UCKE3 - Build date of May 26, 2011
  • I897UCKF1 - Build date of June 8, 2011

As folks have been ripping through them to find changes, it's been noted that AT&T bloatware is present in each in one and both appear to be making use of a new bootloader similar to that of the i9000. As with all leaks -- you'll have to exercise some caution should you go messing with these, they're not meant for everyone and just because they are labeled "official" does not mean they're ready for prime time. Until released by an official carrier -- they're still just leaks.

That said; if you're into dealing with the nitty gritty details and comfortable going hands-on with Odin in order to get either one of these files loaded up you can hit the source links for more details.

HTC EVO View 4G will include the scribe, according to Sprint playbook

4

The HTC EVO View 4G, Sprint's branded version of the HTC Flyer (check our review), will include the HTC Scribe stylus, according to this leaked screen from Sprint's Playbook.  Like many of you guys, I was a bit put off about the Wifi version not including the pen here in the US (Phil had to talk me down more than once), because it's probably the best feature of the Flyer/View -- at least for me.  Apparently someone at Sprint agrees that the pen is a very important piece of the EVO View experience, and they're tossing it in.  Good for you, Sprint.

Google Maps updates to v5.6.0

18

Another quick update for Google Maps has rolled out today putting it at v5.6.0. The latest update just simply adds the option to rate a restaurant as "Best ever" plus, adds restaurant awards to their Places page if they have one set up. Nothing major -- but least now if you really dig that burger joint down the road you can proudly proclaim it as the best ever! Download link after the break, folks.

Thanks, Shayne!

LG dual-screen slider with T-Mobile branding caught at Kineto Wireless event

19

Ever want a split-keyboard, dual screen slider phone that runs Android?  You're in luck, because it looks like LG is making one and it is headed to T-Mobile.  There's not a lot known just yet, other than it's thick, and two of the eight "shortcut" icons in the secondary display are user programmable.  The fact that Kineto, the people behind wifi calling for Android, were showing it off makes us think that feature will be included as well.

I'll be honest -- I'm kind of digging it.  I like physical keyboards, and something tells me I could adapt to the split model pretty easily.  I'm sure more info will start to trickle out about this one, but in the meantime be sure to visit the source link and check out the pictures.

Some T-Mobile G2 warranty replacements mistakenly shipped with Gingerbread

4

A leaked internal screenshot seems to show T-Mobile USA acknowledging recent reports of some G2 warranty replacements returning to customers with a tasty surprise, in the form of Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread. According to the image obtained by TmoNews, the carrier notes that this was a "test build", "shipped in error on a limited number of devices". Unsurprisingly, Tmo also says it noticed an increased number of "unnecessary" exchange requests in the week or so since the reports first emerged, as wily G2 owners attempted to take advantage of the mix-up to get an early taste of Gingerbread.

However, now that T-Mobile is aware of the error, it's unlikely any more devices will be shipped with the test build. Unless you're among the lucky few that already has it, you'll have to wait until the update's officially sent out over-the-air in the weeks ahead.

Sprint HTC EVO 3D initial review

Watch our hands-on with the EVO 3D!

If there ever was a phone that could supplant the venerable HTC EVO 4G as Sprint's best-selling Android device, the new EVO 3D could well be it. Spend just a few minutes with the device, and that much is clear. You're going to want this smartphone.

"But Phil," you say. "It's got all that 3D stuff, and I don't care about 3D stuff."

Know what? That's fine. You don't have to use it. We're well into our review of the EVO 3D, and it's time for some initial thoughts. Find 'em after the break.
