German court partially lifts Galaxy Tab 10.1 injunction

11

A court has partially lifted an injunction against Samsung that was keeping the Korean hardware manufacturer from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in most of the Europen Union.

The German court ruled that it's unsure whether it can keep a Korean manufacturer from selling its goods outside of Germany. Import and sell all you want. Samsung Germany, however, is still barred from selling in most of the EU.

European HTC EVO 3D now available

6

The European version of the HTC EVO 3D has suddenly appeared at a number of UK retailers, following recent delays which resulted in the phone being unceremoniously dumped by Vodafone UK a few weeks ago. With no network-subsidized option available just yet, the only way to get hold of HTC's stereoscopic monster right now is by forking out for the SIM-free version, which retails at a slightly eye-watering £500 (~$815). However, that gets you a potent mix of bleeding-edge smartphone technologies, including a 3D qHD (960x540) display, a 3D recording setup, a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM, not to mention HTC's latest Sense 3.0.

If you're tempted, be sure to check out our review of the US version, which launched on Sprint a couple of months ago. Stay tuned to AC for full write-up of the European model in the next week or so.

Google Catalogs makes shopping from your tablet easier

8

iPad version available now; Honeycomb users have to wait

Youtube link for mobile viewing

We'll ignore, for the moment, the fact that this Google app hits iOS before Android, and instead focus on how much easier the Google Catalogs app appears to make shopping. The tablet app aggregates some of your favorite catalogs in a single app. Tags in each catalog bring up photos and video of an item. You can search across catalogs, and favorite items for later, and save items across catalogs.

A sampling of the catalogs included in the app are: Anthropologie, Bare Escentuals, Bergdorf Goodman, Crate and Barrel, L.L. Bean, Lands’ End, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Pottery Barn, Saks Fifth Avenue, Sephora, Sundance, Tea Collection, Urban Outfitters and Williams-Sonoma.

We're a long way from dog-eared pages, eh?

Galaxy Tab 10.1 isn't banned from The Netherlands, for now

3

In the latest chapter in the Apple v. Samsung saga, Apple's attempts to push through their case through in The Netherlands has failed, for now. The claims here are a little broader than those submitted in Germany, going beyond just the design of the Tab and into the software it runs.

The courts in The Hague have politely informed Apple that no decision will be reached on the case until Sept. 15. This is after Samsung's Aug. 25 appeal the original injunction granted in Germany.

The Dutch case has potentially more serious consequences for Samsung should the courts rule in Apples favour. Florian Mueller of the FOSS Patent's blog, speculates that Rotterdam in The Netherlands could be key to Samsung's European import logistics.

Minecraft Pocket Edition now available in the Android Market for the Xperia Play

6

Its been a long time coming but it's finally here for Sony Ericsson Xperia Play owners at least. Yes, Minecraft Pocket Edition has gone live in the Android Market and is now available for download. As noted on the Mojang blog:

The first version (Alpha 0.1) will focus on the creative aspects of Minecraft. We have tried to put in the features that make sense for playing on a mobile device while still keeping the core of the Minecraft experience. You will be able to select blocks on the touchscreen or just scroll through them with the circle and square buttons on the Xperia Play device. The first version also supports multi-player on a local wireless network allowing you to create a world and invite friends to build together.  Some of the features in this release include:

  • Randomized worlds
  • Build anything you can imagine
  • Build with 36 different kinds of blocks
  • Invite and play with friends to your world (local wireless network)
  • Save multi-player worlds on your own phone

Awesome! For now, Minecraft is a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play exclusive with it rolling out to other Android devices at a later time. Ready to get your mobile Minecrafting on? It'll set you back $6.99 -- you can jump past the break for the download and some slick videos of it in action.

Samsung Hercules and HTC Ruby possible release dates revealed in T-Mobile back-to-school flyer

22

Two really interesting new phones are soon to be released on T-Mobile, the Samsung Hercules and the HTC Ruby.  We now know at least a tentative date for their arrival, October 26.  Both of which are "4G capable and share many similar top of the line features and also [are] the fastest smartphones in the market" according to T-mobile.  I'm not sure we can argue too much when we have a look at the rumored specs of them: a 4.3 inch qHD display, 1GB RAM and a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU for the Ruby, and 4.5 inch Super AMOLED Plus, 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, and 16GB of internal memory for the Hercules.  Either looks like a real winner, and should make any Android fan pretty happy.

Of course, these dates are likely as not to change, but at least we know the ballpark.
