CyanogenMod 6 now stable, download for your favorite phone today

33

CyanogenModAfter weeks and weeks of coding and testing, CyanogenMod 6 is now officially "stable" and ready for download. For those of you new to Android, the CM series of ROMs are based off the Android Open Source Project -- the pure building blocks of the Android OS -- with a bunch of tweaks and customizations added on, while keeping with a stock Android feel. For most phones, you'll need root and bootloader access -- you can find more information on that here -- and read through the respective threads at CM for further information if you're just starting out. Evo sized HTC Android device making its way to Verizon

68

htcandroid

Well look at what we have here? An unknown HTC Android device that looks very similar to the Evo 4G, except this one will be making its way to the Verizon network.  This device, which could be part of the leaked Verizon roadmap we saw a few weeks ago appears to bring some great things to Verizon customers. a 4.3 inch display, dual LED flash, front facing camera along with an 8MP rear facing camera and a kickstand to top it all off, the device appears to be a replica style device of the Evo 4G. Unfortunately, the processing power, battery size, or version of Android it will be running at launch are all still unknown, but we are excited to see the specs as they surface. Hit the source link to view a few more shots of this beautiful device. [BGR]

Need a supercomputer in your pocket? Android can help

12

Android Supercomputers in your PocketJust one more thing to add to the list of what makes Android so awesome. Scientists performing complex calculations often need to book time on a supercomputer to solve problems for their research. The problem with this is that time on a supercomputer has to be scheduled in advance, and it can be expensive. Not only that, but they're not portable, so if the researcher is in a remote location, he or she may not be able to quickly enter the data for a calculation.

Enter Android. Some of these newer smartphones can be powerful enough to quickly solve complex problems. Of course it'll be many years before we have the power of a supercomputer in our pockets, but with the help of a supercomputer a model can be generated that allows a handheld computer to come close enough to the answer a supercomputer would give to be useful to the researcher. The details are a little bit over my head, but it just goes to show you that Android as a computing platform is as amazing as it is a smartphone platform. [Wired]

Epic 4G rooted before it's released

19

The Sprint Epic 4G is the latest Android phone to get rooted before it's even available for sale.  The new root method developed by Sebastian Krahmer used to root the Droid 2, the Evo 4G, and the Motorola Backflip looks like the long sought universal root many of us have been waiting for, unless I jinxed it by talking about it.

The hackers over at SDX-Developers have the root method working, and are in the process of simplifying things for those who aren't total Android nerds.  If you are a total Android nerd and want to offer to lend a hand, or just curious about the progress have a look at the source link. [SDX-Developers] Thanks Rufflez!

Motorola Backflip gets rooted [FWIW]

5

Backflip root

The Motorola Backflip is the latest phone to get rooted, and it's using the same exploit as was used on the Droid 2 and the Evo 4G. This makes things really interesting, as any root method that works across different models and manufacturers is a very welcome change. And we all should encourage the rooting of all Android phones on AT&T, even if only to uncripple them let them run the OS as designed.

The standard disclaimer that this breaks warranties, can brick your phone, and maybe even make your dog run away still stands.  If you decide that this is for you, hit the source link and have at it. [ModMyMobile.com]

Fennec Alpha available for Android [video]

41

Fennec Alpha, aka  the Firefox Mobile browser, is now available for Android phones (and the Nokia N900). Just point your Android browser to http://firefox.com/m/alpha to give it a download. The browser has come a long way since our hands-on in April - adding pinch-to-zoom, Firefox Sync (which syncs your history, bookmarks, open tabs, and passwords), Add-ons, and the Awesome Bar.

It's still Alpha, though, so your mileage may vary - Mozilla points out that improvements to graphics performance are coming and there are still a few bugs to work out. Still, to our eyes it looks every bit as exciting as the video after the break suggests. [Mozilla]

Confirmed: Droid Incredible Froyo Update rolls out today

114

 Droid Incredible Froyo

We'd heard and hoped that the Droid Incredible would start seeing the Froyo update today and indeed, Verizon has confirmed via Twitter that it indeed should start happening soon. Makes sense, since Verizon is already advertising Froyo as a feature for the DInc.

In addition to the Android 2.2 goodness, the update will bring Flash, mobile hotspot support, and 720p video recording. Verizon also says it will 'be posted to the VZW site' - we presume they refer to placing instructions on this page, but if you're reading this we suspect the steps in an OTA update are something you can figure out fairly easily.

Received your update? Please do let us know in the Android Forums, won't you? (Those looking to commiserate about not having received it yet head here) [@VZWSupport]

HTC Desire officially available on U.S. Cellular today

9

HTC Desire on US Cellular

The HTC Desire (check out our full review here) is officially available on U.S. Cellular today for $199.95 after a $70 mail-in rebate and with a 2-year contract. HTC's device is the second Android powered phone to hit US Cellular this year; it will be followed by the Samsung Galaxy S in October and 2 LG phones by years end.

Full press release is after the break, if you're into that sort of thing. Anybody on this little-carrier-that-could looking to pick one up?

New Droid Incredibles to ship with Froyo, love

24

 Droid Incredible features listing

While all of us current Droid Incredible owners are waiting in anticipation of Froyo today, new owners can be assured that their DInc will come to their door with Android 2.2 already loaded on their shiny new phone. Interestingly, the phone is listed as a "Google Experience Device" despite having HTC's Sense UI loaded. Also, it looks like HTC and Verizon have resolved supply issues once and for all as the phone no longer has the "ships by" tag it had been sporting since launch.

We know every one of your DInc owners (myself included) simply can't wait any longer. Rather than turn to violence, why not share your pain with other users in the Android Central Forums? [Verizon] Thanks to forums user O.G. Incredible for the tip!

Samsung Fascinate Launch on Sept 9th looks likely [update]

11

Samsung Fascinate Launch Sept 9th

Looking for yet more evidence of that Verizon's Galaxy S phone, the Samsung Fascinate, will launch on September 9th before you head off and pre-order from Best Buy? Look no further than the image at right sent in from an anonymous tipster.

It's a list of the prepaid Smartphone devices for Verizon and there's the Fascinate listed for 9/9/2010.

As we saw in our Hands-On with the Samsung Fascinate, it's looking to be a fairly straight-forward Galaxy S class phone with conservative styling and, thankfully, a flash to back up the 5-megapixel camera. You can get a pretty good idea of what you'll be looking at by checking out our Samsung Captivate Review or our Samsung Vibrant Review.

In any case, Sept 9th looks solid, which means we can start waiting for an Android 2.2 update and wondering whether it will have fully operational GPS. Given Verizon's history on the latter, our fingers are crossed to tightly we're might have blisters.

Update: Thanks to another unnamed tipster, we have even more reason to believe the September 9 date.  After the break check out another image from Verizon systems saying the Fascinate will be available on the Internet on September 8, followed by an "all channel launch" on September 9.  Get ready!

Best Buy to offer pre-order of Verizon Fascinate starting this weekend

19

Samsung Fascinate

Best Buy has announced that it will be offering pre-orders of the Samsung Fascinate (see our hands on here), starting today (Aug. 27) for Reward Zone members, and kicking in on Sunday (Aug. 29) for the public at large.  As for pricing information, which hasn't been announced by Verizon, Best Buy has this to say:

"Pre-orders can be made by visiting any local Best Buy or Best Buy Mobile standalone store. Pricing and launch dates for the Samsung Fascinate, which is a member of the Galaxy Series, will be announced soon."

Soon in this case may really mean soon, as we just saw some evidence that the Fascinate may launch on September 9.  And it could be that Best Buy saw that, too, and is just getting its ducks in a row. For all of you guys and gals who have been waiting for the Verizon flavor of the Galaxy S line, it looks like the time is drawing near.  [Best Buy]

HTC Vanguard (Vision/G2?) to be released Sept. 29?

10

 HTC Vanguard

There's been some talk about the HSPA+ HTC G2 being released in September, and TmoNews has got hold of some screenshots that puts the date as September 29 for the release of the Vanguard.  What does the Vanguard have to do with the G2?  I'm glad you asked.  If you rip open the leaked G2 ROM we saw recently (or grab it already done for you here), you will see references to the Vanguard, such as in the devices name for the static wallpapers (also pulled out for you here).

If things don't change (and they often do), look for the G2, codenamed the Vanguard, running stock Froyo, with an all new chip on the 29th of September.  So who's excited for this besides me? [TmoNews]
